• jQuery fadeIn fails with jqQuery form-plugin

  I have a message that I want to fadeIn when a form is successfully send. I'm using the jQuery form plugin and the code: $(document).ready(function() { var options = { target: '#output', beforeSubmit: validate, resetForm: true }; $('#holdform').ajaxForm(options); }); The validate function works perfectly so i added this code before it returns true: (...) $('#output').fadeIn('slow'); return true; } This should fadeIn the div I have underneath the form, styled as display: none;. But what happens is that the div fades in and then disappears. Does anyone have an explanation and possibly a solution to fix it? Thank you in advance! • Visual Studio 2008 - The breakpoint cannot be hit

  I know that many people have had this problem... but I am now having it and cannot solve the issue. VS 2008 is randomly giving me an error after working on a project for weeks. When I set a debug point, I get a warning: The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document. I have re-built the solution with no debug points and re-tried. I have also tried to Load Symbols from path and that has not worked either... Can someone please help walk me through the necessary steps to getting my debug function working again. Thanks.

• SQL SERVER – SmallDateTime and Precision – A Continuous Confusion

  Some kinds of confusion never go away. Here is one of the ancient confusing things in SQL. The precision of the SmallDateTime is one concept that confuses a lot of people, proven by the many messages I receive everyday relating to this subject. Let me start with the question: What is the precision of the SMALLDATETIME datatypes? What is your answer? Write it down on your notepad. Now if you do not want to continue reading the blog post, head to my previous blog post over here: SQL SERVER – Precision of SMALLDATETIME. A Social Media Question Since the increase of social media conversations, I noticed that the amount of the comments I receive on this blog is a bit staggering. I receive lots of questions on facebook, twitter or Google+. One of the very interesting questions yesterday was asked on Facebook by Raghavendra. I am re-organizing his script and asking all of the questions he has asked me. Let us see if we could help him with his question: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100),registered smalldatetime) GO DECLARE @test smalldatetime SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT * FROM #temp ORDER BY registered DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO Now when the above script is ran, we will get the following result: Well, the expectation of the query was to have the following result. The row which was inserted last was expected to return as first row in result set as the ORDER BY descending. Side note: Because the requirement is to get the latest data, we can’t use any  column other than smalldatetime column in order by. If we use name column in the order by, we will get an incorrect result as it can be any name. My Initial Reaction My initial reaction was as follows: 1) DataType DateTime2: If file precision of the column is expected from the column which store date and time, it should not be smalldatetime. The precision of the column smalldatetime is One Minute (Read Here) for finer precision use DateTime or DateTime2 data type. Here is the code which includes above suggestion: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100), registered datetime2) GO DECLARE @test datetime2 SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT * FROM #temp ORDER BY registered DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO 2) Tie Breaker Identity: There are always possibilities that two rows were inserted at the same time. In that case, you may need a tie breaker. If you have an increasing identity column, you can use that as a tie breaker as well. CREATE TABLE #temp (ID INT IDENTITY(1,1), name VARCHAR(100),registered datetime2) GO DECLARE @test datetime2 SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT * FROM #temp ORDER BY ID DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO Those two were the quick suggestions I provided. It is not necessary that you should use both advices. It is possible that one can use only DATETIME datatype or Identity column can have datatype of BIGINT or have another tie breaker. An Alternate NO Solution In the facebook thread this was also discussed as one of the solutions: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100),registered smalldatetime) GO DECLARE @test smalldatetime SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO SELECT name, registered, ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY registered DESC) AS "Row Number" FROM #temp ORDER BY 3 DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO However, I believe it is not the solution and can be further misleading if used in a production server. Here is the example of why it is not a good solution: CREATE TABLE #temp (name VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,registered smalldatetime) GO DECLARE @test smalldatetime SET @test=GETDATE() INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value1',@test) INSERT INTO #temp VALUES ('Value2',@test) GO -- Before Index SELECT name, registered, ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY registered DESC) AS "Row Number" FROM #temp ORDER BY 3 DESC GO -- Create Index ALTER TABLE #temp ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_#temp] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (name DESC) GO -- After Index SELECT name, registered, ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY registered DESC) AS "Row Number" FROM #temp ORDER BY 3 DESC GO DROP TABLE #temp GO Now let us examine the resultset. You will notice that an index which is created on the base table which is (indeed) schema change the table but can affect the resultset. As you can see, an index can change the resultset, so this method is not yet perfect to get the latest inserted resultset. No Schema Change Requirement After giving these two suggestions, I was waiting for the feedback of the asker. However, the requirement of the asker was there can’t be any schema change because the application was used by many other applications. I validated again, and of course, the requirement is no schema change at all. No addition of the column of change of datatypes of any other columns. There is no further help as well. This is indeed an interesting question. I personally can’t think of any solution which I could provide him given the requirement of no schema change. Can you think of any other solution to this? Need of Database Designer This question once again brings up another ancient question:  “Do we need a database designer?” I often come across databases which are facing major performance problems or have redundant data. Normalization is often ignored when a database is built fast under a very tight deadline. Often I come across a database which has table with unnecessary columns and performance problems. While working as Developer Lead in my earlier jobs, I have seen developers adding columns to tables without anybody’s consent and retrieving them as SELECT *.  There is a lot to discuss on this subject in detail, but for now, let’s discuss the question first. Do you have any suggestions for the above question? • Large file upload into WSS v3

  I'd built an WSSv3 application which upload files in small chunks; when every data piece arrives, I temporarly keep it into a SQL 2005 image data type field for performance reasons**. Problem come when upload ends; I need to move data from my SQL Server to Sharepoint Document Library through WSSv3 object model. • jQuery closing pop-up after successful form submit

  Hi, I have a pop up form that i wish to close on successfull submit of the form. Currently we are only validating on the server side which will create an unordered list of validation errors with the class .error_message. Once the form has been successfully submitted i want to close the window. • Use a "x-dom-event-stream" stream in javascript ?

  Hello, HTML5 draft contains an API called EventSource to stream data (notifications) trough javascript using only one server call. • Transitioning to Branching with TFS

  Our team is currently using plain old TFS 2005, no branching, shared checkouts etc... I would like to introduce a DEV/MAIN/PROD branching system simillar to the basic flavor in the TFS Guidance document so that we can do some parallel dev, isolation, and firm up review and deployment processes. I have read most of the whitepapers etc. Do you guys have any practical advice, suggested tools, gotchas or reccomendations. Also, we plan to migrate to 2010 once it comes out - not sure if that would affect anything. I appreciate all the suggestions and help I can get as I am a branching neophyte. Thanks in advance.

• Avoid XmlDocument validating namespaces in C#

  Hello, I'm trying to find a way of indenting a HTML file, I've been using XMLDocument and just using a XmlTextWriter. However I am unable to format it correctly for HTML documents because it checks the doctype and tries to download it. Is there a "dumb" indenting mechanism that doesnt validate or check the document and does a best effort indentation? The files are 4-10Mb in size and they are autogenerated, we have to handle it internal - its fine, the user can wait, I just want to avoid forking to a new process etc. Essentially, right now I use a MemoryStream, XmlTextWriter and XmlDocument, once indented I read it back from the MemoryStream and return it as a string. Failures happen for XHTML documents and some HTML 4 documents because its trying to grab the dtds. I tried setting XmlResolver as null but to no avail :(

• jquery autocomplete filtering

  Hello all, I have a page, which uses jQuery Autocomplete on the second two textboxes (investigator and institution). It is getting the data fine, and displaying it, but for some reason it is not filtering the list of data as i continue to type. Anyone know why? Is there something i need to do to turn this on? According to the jQuery site, the only options to the autocomplete initializer are delay, minLength and source. Thanks in advance! I'm using jQ v1.4.1 and jQui v.1.8rc1. • Singleton again, but with multi-thread and Objective-C

  I know Singleton pattern has been discussed so much. But because I'm not fully understand the memory management mechanism in Objective-C, so when I combined Singleton implementation with multithreading, I got a big error and cost me a whole day to resolve it. I had a singleton object, let's call it ObjectX. I declared an object inside ObjectX that will detach a new thread, let's call that object objectWillSpawnNewThread, when I called [[ObjectX sharedInstance].objectWillSpawnNewThread startNewThread]; The new thread could not be executed correctly, and finally I found out that I should not declare the object objectWillSpawnNewThread inside the singleton class. Here are my questions: How does Objective-C allocate static object in the memory? Where does Objective-C allocate them(Main thread stack or somewhere else)? Why would it be failed if we spawn a new thread inside the singleton object? I had searched the Objective-C language [ObjC.pdf] and Objective-C memory management document, maybe I missed something, but I currently I could not find any helpful information.

  Question Where can I find a list of changes introduced to Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RTM that were added since Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RC? In fact, I'm only interested in changes related to MS Test Manager 2010 and Coded UI Tests. Where I have looked so far I have searched the Internet, looked for a readme.txt in the installation folder, looked into the Visual Studio help (F1) and browsed the "What's new in Visual Studio 2010" section on MSDN. No luck. Found Scott Guthrie's blog post Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 Released, but that's not exactly what I am looking for. It's not a changelog since VS2010RC. I suppose there is no such file because they made too many changes to document and hand out to end users. But if there was, I'd be glad if someone could point me to it. Thanks.

• Binding to NSTextField Cell not working, edited value resets to default

  I'm working on a Core Data document application that dynamically creates NSTableColumns. The data cell type may be a checkbox, slider, etc. Programmatically binding to all cell types works, except for NSTextFieldCell. All NSTextFieldCells fail to bind, and after editing they return to their default value. This happens no matter if they're binding to a string, a number (with an NSNumberFormatter applied), or a date (NSDateFormatter applied). I'm using the following format to do all bindings: NSDictionary *textFieldOpts = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys:@"YES", NSContinuouslyUpdatesValueBindingOption, @"YES", NSValidatesImmediatelyBindingOption, nil]; [aCell bind:@"value" toObject:[[entryAC arrangedObjects] objectAtIndex:0] withKeyPath:@"numberData" options:textFieldOpts]; Again, these statements work if the cell type is anything but an NSTextFieldCell. I threw in an observeValueForKeyPath method to log when the value changes... and for other cell types (NSSliderCell for instance) I can see the value changing, but with the NSTextFieldCell, it never, ever updates.   Hi, so here is my question in a situation if you will. i have 6 items in div classes which correspond to 3 categories something like this class ="boat" class ="car" class ="bike" class ="blueboat" class ="redcar" class ="greenbike" so is there a jquery/javascript approach with .addClass where when someone clicks on the button "Randomize" it addClass .mine to each one of the 3 categories ie blueboat.mine and redcar.mine and bike.mine but not boat or car or greenbike because they are in the same category? or another situation rather than .addClass use a jquery/javascript so when "Randomize" is clicked to randomly show 3 out of 6 items one in each category of boat,car,bike and hide the rest blueboat,redcar,greenbike. in this situation all 6 items are on the page when document is ready but with the randomize only 3 are left one from each category. please let me know if anyone has any ideas or needs further clarification any help is greatly appreciated. thank you -david

  Hi there. I am writing a WWW application, it has to run under IE. I have the problem with the code that runs under FF, but i can't get it running under IE. // JS code function test() { if (window.event.keyCpde == 13) window.location.href.ssign("myPage.php"); } I've tried some similar ways around window.location and location.href, also document.location. I've read that IE has problems with that, so i ask for a solution. The goal is, that page reloads after typing in some text into <input type='text' name='item_code' onKeyDown='test()'> and click enter. So the result is similar to pressing submit type button below the text input. Within IE it reloads the same page and nothing happens. In FF it correctly works.

According this document the GMA X3100 does support EXT_geometry_shader4. The input is POINTS and the output is LINE_STRIP.   I'm a bit confused with the way the canvas element anti-aliases text and am hoping you all can help. In the following screenshot the top "Quick Brown Fox" is an H1 element and the bottom one is a canvas element with text rendered on it. On the bottom you can see both "F"s placed side by side and zoomed in.
