• How do I base a style on a Silverlight toolkit theme style

  I've being trying to add a theme from the Silverlight toolkit to a project. In the project there are a number of existing styles used in the layout. The problem is when any control has an explict style applied to it does not receive any attributes of the style from the theme. In WPF I would use something like BasedOn={x:Type TextBox}, but this is not supported in Silverlight. I've considered going through the theme and setting a key for every style and then using BasedOn to create both an implicit style to use with the ImplictStyleManager, as well as another explicit style for use with the existing styled controls. Have you got any better ideas?

The report is having four parts as - Project Info1 (A PDF Table of variable height) Project Info2 (A PDF Table of variable height) Requestor Info (A PDF Table of Fixed height) Location Info (A PDF Table of Fixed height) The top two information are of variable height and they can acquire certain pages. The other two are of fixed size which comes at last. I want to move the last (one or both) boxes to the next page if there is no space available to fit those boxes in current page. If space for one box is available then place one to the current page and move other box to the next table. Is there way to decide this?

  This is a new iPhone project, only 1 target (different from this question) On build we get: Failed to launch simulated application: Unknown error. The google again gives us nothing, lots of people have encountered this and there are lots of crazy ideas to try "oh clean the build", "clear the cache", "twiddle this flag" and none of them work and work consistently. We can reproduce this on two different machines with SDK 2.2.1 and 3.0 beta. Not the install on the machines since other iphone projects work just fine so we believe it has something to do with the config of this particular project but after combing through the config twice we can't spot the problem. • Visual Studio Crashes when using Crystal Reports Group Editor

  I have a crystal report in my Visual Studio 2008 ASP.NET project, and when I choose "Group Expert" from the Crystal Reports - Report menu, Visual Studio crashes / hangs and I have to use Task Manager to close the program. This happens no matter how many times I try, and oddly enough it seems to work fine on another computer with the same project. Any help at all in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Developer SP2, Windows Vista Enterprise SP1, and the version of Crystal Reports that came with the Visual Studio installation.

• Problem with importing an mdf created with SQL Server Express 2008 into SQL Server 2005

  The question is probably extremely easy to resolve, but I need to resolve it because I need to carry on with my project. I am using SQL Server Express 2008 at home, and I've been working on an ASP.NET MVC app that stores my DB in an mdf file in the project's folder. The problem is that the SQL Server in the Uni labs is SQL Server 2005, and when I try to open the mdf file with the VS Server Explorer,It says that the version of the mdf file is more than the server can accept. The only option that comes to my mind is exporting the DB as an sql file, just like I've done it thousand times with phpmyadmin. the thing is that the SQL Management Studio Express is not the most usable tool in the world, and for some strange reason all the articles I could find in Google were irrelevant. Please, help.

  Hi I'm getting a strange error when building my WCF RIA Services Silverlight project in VS2008. In the output I have this message: C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\Silverlight\v3.0\Microsoft.Ria.Client.targets(261,5): error : Failed to write the generated contents of 'C:\projects\[Path_To_Silverlight_Project]\Generated_Code\Analytics.Web.g.cs' to Visual Studio. ...and Visual Studio opens a dialog while building with the following: An editor or project is attempting to save a file that is modified in memory. Saving files during a build is dangerous and may result in incorrect build outputs in the future. Continue with save? The other members on my team seems to be doing just fine, but I can't get past this point (I can if I click 'Continue' which then generate the file just fine but I'm reluclant to do so). There must be some setup or similar that I'm missing here... PS: I'm currently on WinXP and WCF RIA Service beta

  I have a Project model and it has some text attributes, one is summary. I have some projects that have html tags in the summary and I want to convert that to plain text. I have this method that has a regex that will remove all html tags. def strip_html_comments_on_data self.attributes.each{|key,value| value.to_s.gsub!(/(<[^>]+>|&nbsp;|\r|\n)/,"")} end I also have a before_save filter before_save :strip_html_comments_on_data The problem is that the html tags are still there after saving the project.   I'm trying to use CoreServices on the iPhone simulator (I don't need it to run on a device), but my project won't build because of the error: ld: framework not found CoreServices Command /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 I've added the framework to my project, under frameworks. I also read you need to include CFNetwork.framework, so I've added that too. If I remove CoreServices.framework, the compiler complains about undeclared symbols, as you'd expect. So it seems to use the framework to compile those classes, but then complains it can't find the framework.

The list of columns in phones_extension looks like this: id, extension, prefix, did_flag, len, ten_id, restriction_class_id, sfc_id, name_display, building_id, floor, room, phone_id, department_id In phones_ten it looks like this: id, name, pbxid Now, I'd like to be able to somehow make it so that there is an association (or inheritance?) that essentially results in me being able to make a query like phones_extension.ten and it gives me the result of phones_ten.name. Right now I have to get phones_extension.ten_id and then match that against phones_ten.id - I'm trying to get the DBML to handle this translation automatically. Is this possible?

  I have been wanting to have a play with Object Databases for a while now, and today I have done just that.  One of the obvious choices I had to make was which one to use.  My criteria for choosing one today was simple, I wanted one which I could literally wack in and start using, which means I wanted one which either had a .NET API or was designed/ported to .NET.  My decision was between two being: db4o MongoDb I went for db4o for the single reason that it looked like I could get it running and integrated the quickest.  I am making a Blogging application and front end as a project with which I can test and learn with these object databases.  Another requirement which I thought I would mention is that I also want to be able to use the said database in a shared hosting environment where I cannot install, run and maintain a server instance of said object database.  I can do exactly this with db4o. The spec summary of the computer I used is as follows: With regards to the actual Repository implementation itself, it really is quite straight forward and I have to say I am very surprised at how easy it was to integrate and get up and running.  One thing I have noticed in the exposure I have had so far is that the Query returns IList<T> as opposed to IQueryable<T> but again I have not looked into this in depth and this could be there already and if not they have provided everything one needs to make there own repository.  An example of a couple of methods from by db4o implementation of the BlogRepository is below: public class BlogRepository : IBlogRepository { private readonly IObjectContainer _db; public BlogRepository(IObjectContainer db) { _db = db; } public void Put(DomainObject obj) { _db.Store(obj); } public void Delete(DomainObject obj) { _db.Delete(obj); } public Post GetByKey(object key) { return _db.Query<Post>(post => post.Key == key).FirstOrDefault(); } … Anyways I hope to get a few more implementations going of the object databases and literally just get familiarized with them and the concept of no sql databases.   I'm starting a new project based on ASP.NET and Windows server. The application is planned to be pretty big and serve large amount of clients pulling and updating high freq. changing data. I have previously created projects with Linq-To-Sql or with Ado.Net. My plan for this project is to use VS2010 and the new EF4 framework. It would be great to hear other programmers options about development with Entity Framework Pros and cons from previous experience? Do you think EF4 is ready for production? Should i take the risk or just stick with plain old good ADO.NET?

• How do I create sub-applications in Django?

  I'm a Django newbie, but fairly experienced at programming. I have a set of related applications that I'd like to group into a sub-application but can not figure out how to get manage.py to do this for me. Ideally I'll end up with a structure like: project/ app/ subapp1/ subapp2/ I've tried: manage.py startapp app.subapp1 manage.py startapp app/subapp1 but this tells me that / and . are invalid characters for app names I've tried changing into the app directory and running ../manage.py subapp1 but that makes supapp1 at the top level. NOTE, I'm not trying to directly make a stand-alone application. I'm trying to do all this from within a project.

• Hello Operator, My Switch Is Bored

  This is a post for T-SQL Tuesday #43 hosted by my good friend Rob Farley. The topic this month is Plan Operators. I haven’t taken part in T-SQL Tuesday before, but I do like to write about execution plans, so this seemed like a good time to start. This post is in two parts. The first part is primarily an excuse to use a pretty bad play on words in the title of this blog post (if you’re too young to know what a telephone operator or a switchboard is, I hate you). The second part of the post looks at an invisible query plan operator (so to speak). 1. My Switch Is Bored Allow me to present the rare and interesting execution plan operator, Switch: Books Online has this to say about Switch: Following that description, I had a go at producing a Fast Forward Cursor plan that used the TOP operator, but had no luck. That may be due to my lack of skill with cursors, I’m not too sure. The only application of Switch in SQL Server 2012 that I am familiar with requires a local partitioned view: CREATE TABLE dbo.T1 (c1 int NOT NULL CHECK (c1 BETWEEN 00 AND 24)); CREATE TABLE dbo.T2 (c1 int NOT NULL CHECK (c1 BETWEEN 25 AND 49)); CREATE TABLE dbo.T3 (c1 int NOT NULL CHECK (c1 BETWEEN 50 AND 74)); CREATE TABLE dbo.T4 (c1 int NOT NULL CHECK (c1 BETWEEN 75 AND 99)); GO CREATE VIEW V1 AS SELECT c1 FROM dbo.T1 UNION ALL SELECT c1 FROM dbo.T2 UNION ALL SELECT c1 FROM dbo.T3 UNION ALL SELECT c1 FROM dbo.T4; Not only that, but it needs an updatable local partitioned view. We’ll need some primary keys to meet that requirement: ALTER TABLE dbo.T1 ADD CONSTRAINT PK_T1 PRIMARY KEY (c1);   ALTER TABLE dbo.T2 ADD CONSTRAINT PK_T2 PRIMARY KEY (c1);   ALTER TABLE dbo.T3 ADD CONSTRAINT PK_T3 PRIMARY KEY (c1);   ALTER TABLE dbo.T4 ADD CONSTRAINT PK_T4 PRIMARY KEY (c1); We also need an INSERT statement that references the view. Even more specifically, to see a Switch operator, we need to perform a single-row insert (multi-row inserts use a different plan shape): INSERT dbo.V1 (c1) VALUES (1); And now…the execution plan: The Constant Scan manufactures a single row with no columns. The Compute Scalar works out which partition of the view the new value should go in. The Assert checks that the computed partition number is not null (if it is, an error is returned). The Nested Loops Join executes exactly once, with the partition id as an outer reference (correlated parameter). The Switch operator checks the value of the parameter and executes the corresponding input only. If the partition id is 0, the uppermost Clustered Index Insert is executed, adding a row to table T1. If the partition id is 1, the next lower Clustered Index Insert is executed, adding a row to table T2…and so on. In case you were wondering, here’s a query and execution plan for a multi-row insert to the view: INSERT dbo.V1 (c1) VALUES (1), (2); Yuck! An Eager Table Spool and four Filters! I prefer the Switch plan. My guess is that almost all the old strategies that used a Switch operator have been replaced over time, using things like a regular Concatenation Union All combined with Start-Up Filters on its inputs. Other new (relative to the Switch operator) features like table partitioning have specific execution plan support that doesn’t need the Switch operator either. This feels like a bit of a shame, but perhaps it is just nostalgia on my part, it’s hard to know. Please do let me know if you encounter a query that can still use the Switch operator in 2012 – it must be very bored if this is the only possible modern usage! 2. Invisible Plan Operators The second part of this post uses an example based on a question Dave Ballantyne asked using the SQL Sentry Plan Explorer plan upload facility. If you haven’t tried that yet, make sure you’re on the latest version of the (free) Plan Explorer software, and then click the Post to SQLPerformance.com button. That will create a site question with the query plan attached (which can be anonymized if the plan contains sensitive information). Aaron Bertrand and I keep a close eye on questions there, so if you have ever wanted to ask a query plan question of either of us, that’s a good way to do it. The problem The issue I want to talk about revolves around a query issued against a calendar table. The script below creates a simplified version and adds 100 years of per-day information to it: USE tempdb; GO CREATE TABLE dbo.Calendar ( dt date NOT NULL, isWeekday bit NOT NULL, theYear smallint NOT NULL,   CONSTRAINT PK__dbo_Calendar_dt PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (dt) ); GO -- Monday is the first day of the week for me SET DATEFIRST 1;   -- Add 100 years of data INSERT dbo.Calendar WITH (TABLOCKX) (dt, isWeekday, theYear) SELECT CA.dt, isWeekday = CASE WHEN DATEPART(WEEKDAY, CA.dt) IN (6, 7) THEN 0 ELSE 1 END, theYear = YEAR(CA.dt) FROM Sandpit.dbo.Numbers AS N CROSS APPLY ( VALUES (DATEADD(DAY, N.n - 1, CONVERT(date, '01 Jan 2000', 113))) ) AS CA (dt) WHERE N.n BETWEEN 1 AND 36525; The following query counts the number of weekend days in 2013: SELECT Days = COUNT_BIG(*) FROM dbo.Calendar AS C WHERE theYear = 2013 AND isWeekday = 0; It returns the correct result (104) using the following execution plan: The query optimizer has managed to estimate the number of rows returned from the table exactly, based purely on the default statistics created separately on the two columns referenced in the query’s WHERE clause. (Well, almost exactly, the unrounded estimate is 104.289 rows.) There is already an invisible operator in this query plan – a Filter operator used to apply the WHERE clause predicates. We can see it by re-running the query with the enormously useful (but undocumented) trace flag 9130 enabled: Now we can see the full picture. The whole table is scanned, returning all 36,525 rows, before the Filter narrows that down to just the 104 we want. Without the trace flag, the Filter is incorporated in the Clustered Index Scan as a residual predicate. It is a little bit more efficient than using a separate operator, but residual predicates are still something you will want to avoid where possible. The estimates are still spot on though: Anyway, looking to improve the performance of this query, Dave added the following filtered index to the Calendar table: CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX Weekends ON dbo.Calendar(theYear) WHERE isWeekday = 0; The original query now produces a much more efficient plan: Unfortunately, the estimated number of rows produced by the seek is now wrong (365 instead of 104): What’s going on? The estimate was spot on before we added the index! Explanation You might want to grab a coffee for this bit. Using another trace flag or two (8606 and 8612) we can see that the cardinality estimates were exactly right initially: The highlighted information shows the initial cardinality estimates for the base table (36,525 rows), the result of applying the two relational selects in our WHERE clause (104 rows), and after performing the COUNT_BIG(*) group by aggregate (1 row). All of these are correct, but that was before cost-based optimization got involved :) Cost-based optimization When cost-based optimization starts up, the logical tree above is copied into a structure (the ‘memo’) that has one group per logical operation (roughly speaking). The logical read of the base table (LogOp_Get) ends up in group 7; the two predicates (LogOp_Select) end up in group 8 (with the details of the selections in subgroups 0-6). These two groups still have the correct cardinalities as trace flag 8608 output (initial memo contents) shows: During cost-based optimization, a rule called SelToIdxStrategy runs on group 8. It’s job is to match logical selections to indexable expressions (SARGs). It successfully matches the selections (theYear = 2013, is Weekday = 0) to the filtered index, and writes a new alternative into the memo structure. The new alternative is entered into group 8 as option 1 (option 0 was the original LogOp_Select): The new alternative is to do nothing (PhyOp_NOP = no operation), but to instead follow the new logical instructions listed below the NOP. The LogOp_GetIdx (full read of an index) goes into group 21, and the LogOp_SelectIdx (selection on an index) is placed in group 22, operating on the result of group 21. The definition of the comparison ‘the Year = 2013’ (ScaOp_Comp downwards) was already present in the memo starting at group 2, so no new memo groups are created for that. New Cardinality Estimates The new memo groups require two new cardinality estimates to be derived. First, LogOp_Idx (full read of the index) gets a predicted cardinality of 10,436. This number comes from the filtered index statistics: DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS (Calendar, Weekends) WITH STAT_HEADER; The second new cardinality derivation is for the LogOp_SelectIdx applying the predicate (theYear = 2013). To get a number for this, the cardinality estimator uses statistics for the column ‘theYear’, producing an estimate of 365 rows (there are 365 days in 2013!): DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS (Calendar, theYear) WITH HISTOGRAM; This is where the mistake happens. Cardinality estimation should have used the filtered index statistics here, to get an estimate of 104 rows: DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS (Calendar, Weekends) WITH HISTOGRAM; Unfortunately, the logic has lost sight of the link between the read of the filtered index (LogOp_GetIdx) in group 22, and the selection on that index (LogOp_SelectIdx) that it is deriving a cardinality estimate for, in group 21. The correct cardinality estimate (104 rows) is still present in the memo, attached to group 8, but that group now has a PhyOp_NOP implementation. Skipping over the rest of cost-based optimization (in a belated attempt at brevity) we can see the optimizer’s final output using trace flag 8607: This output shows the (incorrect, but understandable) 365 row estimate for the index range operation, and the correct 104 estimate still attached to its PhyOp_NOP. This tree still has to go through a few post-optimizer rewrites and ‘copy out’ from the memo structure into a tree suitable for the execution engine. One step in this process removes PhyOp_NOP, discarding its 104-row cardinality estimate as it does so. To finish this section on a more positive note, consider what happens if we add an OVER clause to the query aggregate. This isn’t intended to be a ‘fix’ of any sort, I just want to show you that the 104 estimate can survive and be used if later cardinality estimation needs it: SELECT Days = COUNT_BIG(*) OVER () FROM dbo.Calendar AS C WHERE theYear = 2013 AND isWeekday = 0; The estimated execution plan is: Note the 365 estimate at the Index Seek, but the 104 lives again at the Segment! We can imagine the lost predicate ‘isWeekday = 0’ as sitting between the seek and the segment in an invisible Filter operator that drops the estimate from 365 to 104. Even though the NOP group is removed after optimization (so we don’t see it in the execution plan) bear in mind that all cost-based choices were made with the 104-row memo group present, so although things look a bit odd, it shouldn’t affect the optimizer’s plan selection. I should also mention that we can work around the estimation issue by including the index’s filtering columns in the index key: CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX Weekends ON dbo.Calendar(theYear, isWeekday) WHERE isWeekday = 0 WITH (DROP_EXISTING = ON); There are some downsides to doing this, including that changes to the isWeekday column may now require Halloween Protection, but that is unlikely to be a big problem for a static calendar table ;)  With the updated index in place, the original query produces an execution plan with the correct cardinality estimation showing at the Index Seek: That’s all for today, remember to let me know about any Switch plans you come across on a modern instance of SQL Server! • Share c# class source code between several projects

  I have written a class that will handle internal logging in my application. Now I want to use this class in another new and totally separate project. I could simply copy the file to the new project folder, but I would like to only have one copy of it to maintain so that all changes in it will apply to both projects over time. I can use the "add existing file", but where do I put the file so that the next developer knows that it is required. I have once had a "shared" folder for this but one time that folder was not brought into the next development computer. What is the best way to organize this so that it makes most sense for new maintainers and minimizes the risk for broken links in projects.

• iphone problem - UIKit precompile error

  I've been working on a project for a few weeks now and today is the last day before it goes to client (typical). For some reason Im suddenly getting the following error when building my project (sim or device), even though other projects build fine /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.1.3.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/Headers/UIKit.h:61:42: error: UIKit/UIVideoEditorController.h: No such file or directory The last thing I was trying to do was use the UIMessage framework for email, but I have stripped that out!?!? N.B I have checked and the .h file does appear to be in the same folder as the UIKit.h file

• How to compress CSS/JS in VS2010 Web Deployment Build Template?

  Hi all, We've recently upgraded from VS2008 - VS2010 (and hence upgrading from Web Deployment Project to proper deployment project). Obviously what's new in VS2010 web deployments is the introduction of Workflow as the build process template. Previously, we used a MSBuild task in the WDP to execute the Yahoo YUI Javascript/CSS compression module to minify/compress javascript and css files. Has anyone managed to accomplish this task with Visual Studio 2010? I have seen the new "SquishIt" compressor created by Justin Etheridge, but its not ideal as it "squishes" on the fly (e.g on Application_Start - Global.ascx) - which means you still have to push out all the uncompressed files to your web server before squishing. In the Workflow designer - i can see a toolbox item called "MSBuild" - just dont know how to use it to accomplish what i want. Been searching high and wide, no-one seems to know how. Surely someone out there has done this.

• MVC Automatic Menu

  An ex-colleague of mine used to call his SQL script generator "Super-Scriptmatic 2000". It impressed our then boss little, but was fun to say and use. We called every batch job and script "something 2000" from that day on. I'm tempted to call this one Menu-Matic 2000, except it's waaaay past 2000. Oh well. The problem: I'm developing a bunch of stuff in MVC. There's no PM to generate mounds of requirements and there's no Ux Architect to create wireframe. During development, things change. Specifically, actions get renamed, moved from controller x to y etc. Well, as the site grows, it becomes a major pain to keep a static menu up to date, because the links change. The HtmlHelper doesn't live up to it's name and provides little help. How do I keep this growing list of pesky little forgotten actions reigned in? The general plan is: Decorate every action you want as a menu item with a custom attribute Reflect out all menu items into a structure at load time Render the menu using as CSS  friendly <ul><li> HTML. The Order allows the items to be ordered. The ParentLink allows you to make this item a child of another menu item. An example action could then be decorated thusly: [MvcMenuItem("Tracks", Order = 20, ParentLink = "/Session/Index")] . All pretty straightforward methinks. The challenge with menu hierarchy becomes fairly apparent when you try to render a menu and highlight the "current" item or render a breadcrumb control. Both encounter an  ambiguity if you allow a data source to have more than one menu item with the same URL link. The issue is that there is no great way to tell which link a person click. Using referring URL will fail if a user bookmarked the page. Using some extra query string to disambiguate duplicate URLs essentially changes the links, and also ads a chance of collision with other query parameters. Besides, that smells. The stock ASP.Net sitemap provider simply disallows duplicate URLS. I decided not to, and simply pick the first one encountered as the "current". Although it doesn't solve the issue completely – one might say they wanted the second of the 2 links to be "current"- it allows one to include a link twice (home->deals and products->deals etc), and the logic of deciding "current" is easy enough to explain to the customer. It digs up all the types, and for each one that is an MVC Controller, digs up the methods. Methods decorated with the MvcMenuItemAttribute get plucked and added to the output list. Again, pretty simple. To make the structure hierarchical, a LINQ expression matches up all the items to their parent: public static void RegisterMenuItems(List<MvcMenuItemAttribute> items) { _MenuItems = items; _MenuItems.ForEach(i => i.ParentItem = items.FirstOrDefault(p => String.Equals(p.Link, i.ParentLink, StringComparison.InvariantCultureIgnoreCase))); } The _MenuItems is simply an internal list to keep things around for later rendering. Finally, to package the menu building for easy consumption: public static void RegisterMenuItems(Type mvcApplicationType) { RegisterMenuItems(ListMenuItems(Assembly.GetAssembly(mvcApplicationType))); } To bring this puppy home, a call in Global.asax.cs Application_Start() registers the menu. Notice the ugliness of reflection is tucked away from the innocent developer. All they have to do is call the RegisterMenuItems() and pass in the type of the application. In previous posts I've discussed my partiality to using well debugged, time test HtmlTextWriter to render HTML rather than writing out angled brackets by hand. In addition, writing out using the actual writer on the actual stream rather than generating string and byte intermediaries (yes, StringBuilder being no exception) disturbs me. To carry out the rendering of an hierarchical menu, the recursive renderHierarchy() is used. You may notice that an ItemFilter is called before rendering each item. I figured that at some point one might want to exclude certain items from the menu based on security role or context or something. That delegate is the hook for such future feature. To carry out rendering of a breadcrumb recursion is used again, this time simply to unwind the parent hierarchy from the leaf node, then rendering on the return from the recursion rather than as we go along deeper. I guess I was stuck in LISP that day.. recursion is fun though.   Now all that is left is some usage! Open your Site.Master or wherever you'd like to place a menu or breadcrumb, and plant one of these calls: <% MvcMenu.ShowBreadCrumb(this.Writer, Request.Url); %> to show a breadcrumb trail (notice lack of "=" after <% and the semicolon). <% MvcMenu.ShowMenu(Writer); %> to show the menu.   As mentioned before, the HTML output is nested <UL> <LI> tags, which should make it easy to style using abundant CSS to produce anything from static horizontal or vertical to dynamic drop-downs.   This has been quite a fun little implementation and I was pleased that the code size remained low. The main crux was figuring out how to pass parent information from the attribute to the hierarchy builder because attributes have restricted parameter types. Once I settled on that implementation, the rest falls into place quite easily.

• Open Visual Web Developer Express file in Visual Studio Professional

  I started working on an Asp.net MVC website using Visual Web Developer Express 2008 a while ago. Just recently, I managed to get my hands on a copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional (through DreamSpark). I installed the Service Pack, and also the MVC2 files for Visual Studio. However, now I can't open my project anymore. When I try to open the solution in Visual Studio, it tells me that the project type is not supported. Does this mean that I have to resort to using VWD Express again? Note: I installed MVC2 through the Web Platform Installer, and it says that it installed successfully, but yet when I restart the WPI, the box next to MVC2 isn't checked; if I check it and click "Install", it finishes the install process instantly and tells me that it was successful.

• GetWindowPlacement/SetWindowPlacement not working in WinForms for high DPI

  I've got a legacy WinForms app and I want to save the window position and size across sessions. I've been using GetWindowPlacement and SetWindowPlacement during the FormClosing and Load events. The problem I'm getting is that at higher DPI settings (Such as Medium, size at 125%) the sizes keep inflating. I'll call SetWindowPlacement on it with a certain size, but when GetWindowPlacement is called, those numbers come back 25% bigger, even though the window was the same size all along. The same sort of problem exists when saving the size of a resizable element within the form. Now this works fine if I create a new WinForms project: The size stays stable even when running at the higher DPI. I'm guessing there's some legacy setting in the bowels of the project or some arcane Form setting that's messing it up, but I can't find out where. I've called IsProcessDPIAware on both projects and both are true. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

• Splitting android application in to two 'branches', free and paid.

  I've developed an android-application that I'dd like to put up on the marketplace. However, I want to split it into two separate applications, one free (with ads), and one paid (logically without ads). How would I go about doing that? I'm not wondering about adding ads (I've alreaddy managed that), but how to take one existing android-application (eclipse-project) and split it into two without having to create a new project and just copy-paste every file one by one (or in batch for that matter). Is that possible? Btw, I use GIT for SCM, so I've made two separate branches, one master and one free, but I need to set some cind of config-value that makes shure that the market separates them as two different applications. Also, when a user 'upgrades', is it possible to copy the db from the free app to the paid one?
