• Building a CMS in PHP: Development tools

  I'm planning to build a CMS in PHP and MySQL, mainly for my own amusement and education. (Though who knows, I may come up with something useful and cool. Anything's possible.) I'll be asking questions about code architecture etc. later. For now, I'm more interested in development tools. So far, all my playing with code has been done on a web server, and I've edited over FTP. I was thinking it might be quicker to use a localhost. Also, that way, I could use version control (which I've never done before). So, A. How do I set up a localhost server with many subdomains on an Ubuntu 9.10 computer. Is XAMPP for Linux the way to go, or should I use a standard Apache distro? (Or another webserver altogether?) For that matter, is it possible to set up more than one webserver on the same computer, and to use them for different localhost subdomains? B. How do I set up a version control thingy covering all the code (which will be on several subdomains of localhost, and in a few shared folders)? I've read Joel Spolsky's HgInt tutorial, and it makes Mercurial look good. And simple, especially if you're working on your own. C. Should I continue to use gEdit to write HTML/CSS/JS/PHP, or is there a better free editor out there for these languages?

• Sharepoint NewForm adding attachments programatically

  I have a list with a custom form which contains a custom file upload control. As soon as the user selects a file and clicks upload, i want this file to go directly to the attachments list within that listitem. However, when adding the file to SPContext.Current.ListItem.Attachments on a new item, the attachment wont show up in the list after saving. If i instead use item.Update() on the new item after adding the attachment i get an error in Sharepoint, but when i then go back to the list, the item is there with its attachment. It seems like its trying to create 2 new entries at once when i save (item.Update) which results in the second of those crashing.   So I have a project structure like so: MyProject/ src/ //subfolders and source code ..... tests/ package/ MyTest.php I am trying to run the unit tests in MyTest.php with PHPUnit but it has a use statement for PHP classes located in the src folder. So I tried to use the include-path directive for PHPUnit like so: (I am in the directory with MyTest.php) phpunit --include-path ~/workspace/MyProject/src/ MyTest Unfortunately execution is halting at the first use statement. What gives?

• With a browser, how do I know which decimal separator does the client use?

  I'm developing a web application. I need to display some decimal data correctly so that it can be copied and pasted into a certain GUI application that is not under my control. The GUI application is locale sensitive and it accepts only the correct decimal separator which is set in the system. I can guess the decimal separator from Accept-Language and the guess will be correct in 95% cases, but sometimes it fails. Is there any way to do it on server side (preferably, so that I can collect statistics), or on client side? Update: The whole point of the task is doing it automatically. In fact, this webapp is a kind of online interface to a legacy GUI which helps to fill the forms correctly. The kind of users that use it mostly have no idea on what a decimal separator is. The Accept-Language solution is implemented and works, but I'd like to improve it. Update2: I need to retrive a very specific setting: decimal separator set in Control Panel / Regional and Language Options / Regional Options / Customize. I deal with four kinds of operating systems: Russian Windows with a comma as a DS (80%). English Windows with a period as a DS (15%). Russian Windows with a period as a DS to make poorly written English applications work (4%). English Windows with a comma as a DS to make poorly written Russian applications work (1%). All 100% of clients are in Russia and the legacy application deals with Russian goverment-issued forms, so asking for a country will yield 100% of Russian Federation, and GeoIP will yield 80% of Russian Federation and 20% of other, incorrect answers.

• Bound DataGridView not updating data source

  I'm trying to bind a table of structures to a DataGridView. Loading and viewing the table is working fine but I can't edit a value and get it stored back into the table. Here's what I'm doing. I have a "primitive" data type, Real defined by public struct MyReal:IMyPrimative { public Double m_Real; //... public MyReal(String val) { m_Real = default(Double); Init(val); } //... } It gets used in a structure: public struct MyReal_Record : IMyRecord { public MyReal Freq { get; set;} MyReal_Record(String[] vals) { Init(vals); } } And the structure is used to define a table using a generic Binding List public class MyTable<S> : BindingList<S> where S: struct, IMyRecord { public Type typeofS; public MyTable() { typeofS = typeof(S); // ... } This table is used as a binding source for a grid, dynamically. private void miLoadFile_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { MyModel.Table<Real_Record> RTable = new MyModel.Table<Real_Record>(); //... Table initialized here //set up grid with virtual mode dataGridView1.DataSource = RTable; } All of this works fine and I can create RTable, initialize it and display it in a grid. Everything seems to be correct going into the CellParsing handler. e.DesiredType is MyReal. e.Value is a string with the new value. After the new MyReal is created from the string, e.Value is set correctly. RowIndex and ColumnIndex are correct. ReadOnly is set false. However, when I leave the cell, the system restores the original value to the cell. I thought the UpdateCellValue would replace the value in the dataSource but I seem to be missing something.   I am trying to retrieve the ARPINSTALLLOCATION during the installation of a Major Upgrade version of the software. Following this info I managed to set the ARPINSTALLLOCATION to the custom path. However, retrieving it again isn't working.   This is similar to this question, but I want to include the path relative to the current directory in unix. If can do the following: ls -LR | grep .txt But it doesn't include the full paths. For example, I have the follow dir structure: test1/file.txt test2/file1.txt test2/file2.txt The code above will return: file.txt file1.txt file2.txt How can I get it to include the paths relative to the current directory using standard nix commands?

• Offline Mapping API

  Are there any services available that allow me to manipulate maps in an offline setting? I am working on a project that requires me to take a map and based on features on the map, generate a game world. I have looked at a few of the API's for different providers: Google, ms, etc. The API's I looked seem to be strictly showing a user a map. I am looking for something that allows me to create a derivative of a map (the Gameworld), that will never be seen by the public, and is only used by the game engine. However one caveat is that I would like to be able to link the derivative created for use by the game engine, with something I can show the user. As an example. Think of a cross country racing sim. Users cannot control the vehicles directly in this game, they can only control the cars setup, driver, etc. I create a gameworld from a map. The gameworld data (driver position, etc) is overlayed onto a real map. A race might last several days. The only interaction users have with the real map is viewing their position on the map, and where they are in relation to the others. I don't want to violate the terms of the API here. I read Googles API TOS, and it seems to me that creating the gameworld would violdate their TOS. The features I really need are the following The ability to locate a specific place on the map by lat/long The ability/rights to grab those maps and save them as an image file temporarily for processing The ability/rights to store a gameworld that is based on the real map The ability to show a user a map with an overlay (this is optional. I can use googles API, or any other one that supports lat/long.)

• Creating parallel selenium tests in C# and using Nunit as the runner application

  I am writing a new test suite for the company to test a very complex ASP.NET application which is heavily AJAX driven. We have decided to use Selenium (Grid & Remote Control) and Nunit to run these tests. The actually tests are dynamically created at run time from a spreadsheet. Each Column in an excel spreadsheet relates to a new test and each row relates to a selenium command (but in plain English and the dll converts this into Selenium code). My problem i have at the moment is getting the tests running in parallel. There will be 1000+ tests so it is too time consuming to have 1 test run at a time. Selenium Grid and Selenium Remote Control(s) are setup correctly because I can run there demo. From what i have read I need to use Punit but i can not find any documentation on what a test in punit should look like. Nunit tests are [SetUp] [TearDown] [Test]. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

• Is Accessing USB from web application for cross browser cross os possible at all ?

  Hey Guys, I am wondering if there is anyway we can achieve this. I heard different things about Silverlight 4 , Java Script or Active X control but not seen any demo of code for any of them. Does anyone know any web component that is available or how to write one. We really like capture client's USB drive via Web and read/write data on it. This has to work for ANY Operating system in Any web browser. Thanks UPDATED What about WPF in browser mode...I read that I can host my wpf apps inside browser and sort of like smart client. Here is a great example of doing this via silverlight 4 but author mentions about possibility of accessing USB on MAC via 1) Enable executing AppleScripts. This option will let us have the same amount of control on a mac machine as we do on a windows machine. 2) Add an overload to ComAutomationFactory.CreateObject() that calls the “Tell Application” command under the scenes and gets a AppleScript object. This option would work extremely well for Office automation. For any other operating system feature, you’ll have to code OS access twice.  I did not quite understand it. Has any tried this ?

• How to send parameters with same encoding from javascript?

  I have a javascript file that lots of people have embedded to their pages. Since I am hosting the file, I have control over that javascript file; I cannot control the way it is embedded because lots of people is using it already. This javascript file sends GET requests to my servlets, and the parameters passed with the request are recorded to DB. For example, javascript sends a request to http://myserver.com/servlet?p1=123&p2=aString and then servlet records 123 and aString to DB somehow. Before sending strings I use encodeURIComponent() to encode it. But what I figured out is every client sends the same string with different encodings depending on either their browser or the site they are visiting. As a result, same strings are represented with different characters when it reaches servlet (so they are different strings). What I am trying to do is to convert the strings to one kind of encoding from javascript so when they reach the client same words are represented with same characters. How is this possible? PS. If there is a way to convert the encoding from Java it is also applicable.

  I have a document based on a xml structure that I have stored in a CouchDB database. Some of the keys contains namespaces and are on the form "namespace:key": {"mykey":{nested:key":"nested value"}} In the map function, I want to emit the nested value as a key, but the colon inside the name makes it hard... emit(doc.mykey.nested:key, doc) <-- will not work. Does anyone know how this can be solved?

• Efective way to avoid integer overflow when multiplying?

  Hi, I'm working on a hash function which gets a string as input. Right now I'm doing a loop and inside the hash (an int variable) is being multiplied by a value and then the ASCII code for the current character is added to the mix. hash = hash * seed + string[i] But sometimes, if the string is big enough there is an integer overflow there, what can I do to avoid it while maintaining the same hash structure? Maybe a bit operation included inside the loop?

• In Sharepoint I need to include a preview image for the screen of selecting layout for a new page.

  In Sharepoint 2007, I have created a layout. As you know when the user creates a page he chooses a layout from a listbox. When you select a different element in the listbox, there is a preview image that changes on the left. I thought this was controlled by the node PublishingPreviewImage in the xml of the layout. I have verified that the image exists in that place. It is not working.
