• DAL Layer : EF 4.0 or Normal Data access layer with Stored Procedure

  Hello Experts, Application : I am working on one mid-large size application which will be used as a product, we need to decide on our DAL layer. Application UI is in Silverlight and DAL layer is going to be behind service layer. We are also moving ahead with domain model, so our DB tables and domain classes are not having same structure. So patterns like Data Mapper and Repository will definitely come into picture. I need to design DAL Layer considering below mentioned factors in priority manner Speed of Development with above average performance Maintenance Future support and stability of the technology Performance Limitation : 1) As we need to strictly go ahead with microsoft, we can not use NHibernate or any other ORM except EF 4.0 2) We can use any code generation tool (Should be Open source or very cheap) but it should only generate code in .Net, so there would not be any licensing issue on per copy basis. Questions I read so many articles about EF 4.0, on outset it looks like that it is still lacking in features from NHibernate but it is considerably better then EF 1.0 So, Do you people feel that we should go ahead with EF 4.0 or we should stick to ADO .Net and use any code geneartion tool like code smith or any other you feel best Also i need to answer questions like what time it will take to port application from EF 4.0 to ADO .Net if in future we stuck up with EF 4.0 for some features or we are having serious performance issue. In reverse case if we go ahead and choose ADO .Net then what time it will take to swith to EF 4.0 Lastly..as i was going through the article i found the code only approach (with POCO classes) seems to be best suited for our requirement as switching is really easy from one technology to other. Please share your thoughts on the same and please guide on the above questions

• "image contains error", trying to create and display images using google app engine

  Hello all the general idea is to create a galaxy-like map. I run into problems when I try to display a generated image. • protobuf-net v2 alpha - problems with Dictionary<string,string>?

  I was using a version of v2 of protobuf-net from a few weeks ago quite successfully. (I want to use V2 due to the speed of the pre-compiled serializer running on the Compact Framework.) Everything worked great until I tried to serialize an object with a property of type Dictionary. I received the following error: {"No serializer defined for type: System.Collections.Generic.KeyValuePair`2[[System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089],[System.String, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089]]"} It looked like there were recent changes made to improve Dictionary support, so I grabbed the latest code from today. After building the CF3.5 and FF3.5 dlls, I tried again. Now I get a different error "The model cannot be changed once frozen." If I remove the ProtoMember attribute from the Dictionary property all seems to work well. Has anyone succcessfully used a Dictionary in v2 of protobuf-net? Is this still too early of a release to be using? My speed tests showed v2 being twice as fast, does that seem accurate (validating my desire to use the less stable v2 pre-alpha bits.)

• How to nest shapes in a DSL Tools diagram?

  I have a DSL containing two main domain classes: Area and Entity. Areas are represented visually by a GeometryShape, whereas entities are represented by a CompartmentShape. Entities can be embedded in an Area, or not (in this case they are embedded in the root object, which is a kind of Area). There may be relationships between entities, including between entities in different areas. Areas cannot be embedded inside of other areas, nor entities embedded inside of other entities. My problem is that I cannot get the behavior I want from the diagram. The embedding of entities in areas works perfectly well at the model level, but the visual representation behaves erratically. For example, if I drag an entity that was created in an area outside of that area, it no longer responds to mouse clicks (I have code that performs the re-parenting, but somehow the diagram side of things is broken). I have searched high and low for samples of how to do this, and come up empty. Every example I've found on the web simulates nesting via "references" relationships, whereas I am performing true embedding of the domain classes (and therefore of their associated shape classes). Does anyone have an example of how to do this? While I'm venting, am I the only one who thinks the diagram/shape classes are massively under-documented?

• Test Views in ASP.NET MVC2 (ala RSpec)

  Hi, I am really missing heavily the ability to test Views independently of controllers. The way RSpec does it. What I want to do is to perform assertions on the rendered view (where no controller is involved!). In order to do so I should provide required Model, ViewData and maybe some details from HttpContextBase (when will we get rid of HttpContext!). So far I have not found anything that allows doing it. Also it might heavily depend on the ViewEngine being used. List of things that views might contain are: Partial views (may be nested deeply). Master pages (or similar in other view engines). Html helpers generating links and other elements. Generally almost anything in a range of common sense :) . Also please note that I am not talking about client-side testing and thus Selenium is just not related to it at all. It is just plain .NET testing. So are there any options to actually do the testing of views? Thanks, Dmitriy.

• Storing Arbitrary Contact Information in Ruby on Rails

  Hi, I am currently working on a Ruby on Rails app which will function in some ways like a site-specific social networking site. As part of this, each user on the site will have a profile where they can fill in their contact information (phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, employer, etc.). A simple solution to modeling this would be to have a database column per piece of information I allow users to enter. However, this seems arbitrary and limited. Further, to support allowing users to enter as many phone numbers as they would like requires the addition of another database table and joins. It seems to me that a better solution would be to serialize all the contact information entered by a user into a single field in their row. Since I will never be conditioning a SQL query on this information, such a solution wouldn't be any less efficient. Ideally, I would like to use a vCard as my serialization format. vCards are the standard solution to storing contact information across the web, and reusing tested solutions is a Good Thing. Alternative serialization formats would include simply marshaling a ruby hash, or YAML. Regardless of serialization format, supporting the reading and updating of this information in a rails-like way seems to be a major implementation challenge. So, here's the question: Has anyone seen this approach used in a rails application? Are there any rails plugins or gems that make such a system easy to implement? Ideally what I would like is an acts_as_vcard to add to my model object that would handle editing the vcard for me and saving it back to the database.

• Creating LINQ to SQL Data Models' Data Contexts with ASP.NET MVC

  I'm just getting started with ASP.NET MVC, mostly by reading ScottGu's tutorial. To create my database connections, I followed the steps he outlined, which were to create a LINQ-to-SQL dbml model, add in the database tables through the Server Explorer, and finally to create a DataContext class. That last part is the part I'm stuck on. In this class, I'm trying to create methods that work around the exposed data. Following the example in the tutorial, I created this: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; namespace MySite.Models { public partial class MyDataContext { public List<Post> GetPosts() { return Posts.ToList(); } public Post GetPostById(int id) { return Posts.Single(p => p.ID == id); } } } As you can see, I'm trying to use my Post data table. However, it doesn't recognize the "Posts" part of my code. What am I doing wrong? I have a feeling that my problem is related to my not adding the data tables correctly, but I'm not sure. • Complex derived attributes in Django models

  What I want to do is implement submission scoring for a site with users voting on the content, much like in e.g. reddit (see the 'hot' function in http://code.reddit.com/browser/sql/functions.sql). My submission model currently keeps track of up and down vote totals. Currently, when a user votes I create and save a related Vote object and then use F() expressions to update the Submission object's voting totals. The problem is that I want to update the score for the submission at the same time, but F() expressions are limited to only simple operations (it's missing support for log(), date_part(), sign() etc.) From my limited experience with Django I can see 4 options here: extend F() somehow (haven't looked at the code yet) to support the missing SQL functions; this is my preferred option and seems to fit within the Django framework the best define a scoring function (much like reddit's 'hot' function) in my database, and have Django use the value of that function for the value of the score field; as far as I can tell, #2 is not possible wrap my two step voting process in a suitably isolated transaction so that I can calculate the voting totals in Python and then update the Submission's voting totals without fear that another vote against the submission could be added/changed in the meantime; I'm hesitant to take this route because it seems overly complex - what is a "suitably isolated transaction" in this case anyway? use raw SQL; I would prefer to avoid this entirely -- what's the point of an ORM if I have to revert to SQL for such a common use case as this! (Note that this coming from somebody who loves sprocs, but is using Django for ease of development.) Before I embark on this mission to extend F() (which I'm not sure is even possible), am I about to reinvent the wheel? Is there a more standard way to do this? It seems like such a common use case and yet in an hour of searching I have yet to find a common solution...

  Hi all, I am using a tree to display my data: persons grouped by their teams. In my model a team can contain another team, so the recursion. I want do display details about the selected node of the tree using a contentpresenter. If the selection is a person, everything is fine: I can show the person name or datails without problem using a simple datatemplate. If the selection is a team I would like to display the team name followed by a list of member names. If one of these members is another team I would like to display just the team name, without recursion... My code here is wrong because it displays data in a recursive way, what is the right way of doing it? • How to html encode the output of an NHaml view (or any MVC view)?

  I have several views written in NHaml that I would like to render as encoded html. However, in order to encode the entire view, I would essentially lose the benefit of writing my view in NHaml since it would have to look like this.... &= "<table class='data'> &= " <thead> So I was wondering if there was any cool way to be able to capture the rendered view as a string, then to html encode that string. • WMI Query Script as a Job

  I have two scripts. One calls the other with a list of servers as parameters. The second query is designed to execute a WMI query. When I run it manually, it does this perfectly. When I try to run it as a job it hangs forever and I have to remove it.   I am new at wcf programming model and i want to use nettcpbinding. before i ask my question below is my custom binding : <customBinding> <binding name="basic"> <security authenticationMode="UserNameForCertificate"/> <binaryMessageEncoding/> <httpsTransport/> </binding> </customBinding> when i create a service reference using a simple console application it finds a certificate and ask me to use it.and this way i can use the webservice ... but when i change binding to nettcpbinding with TransportWithMessageCredential the service is looking for certificate and could not find it like this : </binding> </netTcpBinding> ServiceCertificate.SetCertificate(StoreLocation.LocalMachine, StoreName.My, X509FindType.FindByIssuerName, "Contoso.com"). at this point i use a customnamevalidator and i do it programmatically. so why when i use nettcpbinding with TransportWithMessageCredential why is SetCertificate could not find the installed certificate ? am i missed something ? or do i have to ad something? thanks .

• .NET: Allow NULLS in DB fields?

  Hi there, I have the task of re-factoring an SQLServer DB.... A lot of the tables and columns "ALLOW NULLS", Is this good practice... I seem to remember the authour of CSLA.NET saying it was really bad practice to allow nulls in a DB... If this is the case, what are my alternatives? Remove all "ALLOW NULLS" from all columns.... and in numeric columns use a value of -1 for example?? I would really appreciate any input anyone has. I am currently using a Model (from entity framework) from my DB and the db columns that "ALLOW NULLS" are null ... and some of the stored procedures require that i have a default value... i.e. BOOLEAN require FALSE as default ... but it is null.. Well i don't want to stray from my original question, ALLOW NULLS are a bad thing from what i can gather .... so how do i fix this ? Any help really appreciated

• Any HTTP proxies with explicit, configurable support for request/response buffering and delayed conn

  When dealing with mobile clients it is very common to have multisecond delays during the transmission of HTTP requests. If you are serving pages or services out of a prefork Apache the child processes will be tied up for seconds serving a single mobile client, even if your app server logic is done in 5ms. I am looking for a HTTP server, balancer or proxy server that supports the following: A request arrives to the proxy. The proxy starts buffering in RAM or in disk the request, including headers and POST/PUT bodies. The proxy DOES NOT open a connection to the backend server. This is probably the most important part. The proxy server stops buffering the request when: A size limit has been reached (say, 4KB), or The request has been received completely, headers and body Only now, with (part of) the request in memory, a connection is opened to the backend and the request is relayed. The backend sends back the response. Again the proxy server starts buffering it immediately (up to a more generous size, say 64KB.) Since the proxy has a big enough buffer the backend response is stored completely in the proxy server in a matter of miliseconds, and the backend process/thread is free to process more requests. The backend connection is immediately closed. The proxy sends back the response to the mobile client, as fast or as slow as it is capable of, without having a connection to the backend tying up resources. I am fairly sure you can do 4-6 with Squid, and nginx appears to support 1-3 (and looks like fairly unique in this respect). My question is: is there any proxy server that empathizes these buffering and not-opening-connections-until-ready capabilities? Maybe there is just a bit of Apache config-fu that makes this buffering behaviour trivial? Any of them that it is not a dinosaur like Squid and that supports a lean single-process, asynchronous, event-based execution model? (Siderant: I would be using nginx but it doesn't support chunked POST bodies, making it useless for serving stuff to mobile clients. Yes cheap 50$ handsets love chunked POSTs... sigh)

• NHibernate: how to handle entity-based validation using session-per-request pattern, without control

  What is the best way to do entity-based validation (each entity class has an IsValid() method that validates its internal members) in ASP.NET MVC, with a "session-per-request" model, where the controller has zero (or limited) knowledge of the ISession? Here's the pattern I'm using: Get an entity by ID, using an IFooRepository that wraps the current NH session. This returns a connected entity instance. Load the entity with potentially invalid data, coming from the form post. Validate the entity by callings its IsValid() method. If valid, call IFooRepository.Save(entity). Otherwise, display error message. The session is currently opened when the request begins and flushed when the request ends. Since my entity is connected to a session, flushing the session attempts to save the changes even if the object is invalid. What's the best way to keep validation logic in the entity class, limit controller knowledge of NH, and avoid saving invalid changes at the end of a request? Option 1: Explicitly evict on validation failure, implicitly flush: if the validation fails, I could manually evict the invalid object in the action method. If successful, I do nothing and the session is automatically flushed. Con: error prone and counter-intuitive ("I didn't call .Save(), why are my invalid changes being saved anyways?") Option 2: Explicitly flush, do nothing by default: By default I can dispose of the session on request end, only flushing if the controller indicates success. I'd probably create a SaveChanges() method in my base controller that sets a flag indicating success, and then query this flag when closing the session at request end. Pro: More intuitive to troubleshoot if dev forgets this step [relative to option 1] Con: I have to call IRepository.Save(entity)' and SaveChanges(). Option 3: Always work with disconnected objects: I could modify my repositories to return disconnected/transient objects, and modify the Repo.Save() method to re-attach them. Pro: Most intuitive, given that controllers don't know about NH. Con: Does this defeat many of the benefits I'd get from NH?

• What's the compelling reason to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 from VS2008?

  Are there new features in Visual Studio 2010 that are must-haves? If so, which ones? For me, the big draws for VS2008 as compared to VS2005 were LINQ, .NET Framework multitargeting, WCF (REST + Syndication), and general devenv.exe reliability. Granted, some of these features are framework things, and not tool things. For the purposes of this discussion, I'm willing to combine them into one bucket. What is the list of must-have features for VS2010 versus VS2008? Are there any? I am particularly interested in C#. Update: I know how to google, so I can get the official list from Microsoft. I guess what I really wanted was, the assessment from people using it, as to which things are really notable. Microsoft went on for 3 pages about 2008/3.5 features, and many people sort of boiled it down to LINQ, and a few other things. What is that short list for VS2010? Summary so far, what people think is cool or compelling: Visual Studio engine multi-monitor support new extensibility model based on WPF, prettier and more usable new TFS stuff, incl automated test tools parallel debugging .NET Framework parallel extensions for .NET C# 4.0 generic variance optional and named params easier interop with non-managed environments, like COM or Javascript VB 10.0 collection and array literals / initializers automatic properties anonymous methods / statement lambdas I read up on these at Zander's blog. He described these and other features. • How can I set the size of the gap between inline elements in CSS?

  I am creating an MVC 1.0 form to use in multiple views. I have some elements that need to be shown on the same line, and I have done this by setting the display to "display: inline" for the style. I have also added the margin-left setting to the CSS in order to force the gap between the inline elements but this doesn't appear to be being set. My CSS has: fieldset label.inline { display: inline; margin-left: 2em; } The view code is: <fieldset> <legend>Details</legend> <p> <label for="StartTime">Start Time:</label> <%= Html.TextBox("StartTime", Model.StartTime.ToShortTimeString())%> <label for="NextDay" class="inline">Next Day?</label> <%= Html.CheckBox("NextDay") %> <%= Html.ValidationMessage("StartTime", "*")%> </p> </fieldset> Setting the size in the "margin-left" style has no impact on the space between the StartTime control and the NextDay label.   Are there any libraries or techniques that simplify computing equations ? Take the following two examples: F = B * { [ a * b * sumOf (A / B ''' for all i ''' ) ] / [ sumOf(c * d * j) ] } where: F = cost from i to j B, a, b, c, d, j are all vectors in the format [ [zone_i, zone_j, cost_of_i_to_j], [..]] This should produce a vector F [ [1,2, F_1_2], ..., [i,j, F_i_j] ] T_ij = [ P_i * A_i * F_i_j] / [ SumOf [ Aj * F_i_j ] // j = 1 to j = n ] where: n is the number of zones T = vector [ [1, 2, A_1_2, P_1_2], ..., [i, j, A_i_j, P_i_j] ] F = vector [1, 2, F_1_2], ..., [i, j, F_i_j] so P_i would be the sum of all P_i_j for all j and Aj would be sum of all P_j for all i I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but perhaps a parser for these equations or methods to deal with multiple multiplications and products between vectors? To calculate some of the factors, for example A_j, this is what i use from collections import defaultdict A_j_dict = defaultdict(float) for A_item in TG: A_j_dict[A_item[1]] += A_item[3] Although this works fine, I really feel that it is a brute force / hacking method and unmaintainable in the case we want to add more variables or parameters. Are there any math equation parsers you'd recommend? Side Note: These equations are used to model travel. Currently I use excel to solve a lot of these equations; and I find that process to be daunting. I'd rather move to python where it pulls the data directly from our database (postgres) and outputs the results into the database. All that is figured out. I'm just struggling with evaluating the equations themselves. Thanks :)
