• In mysql, is "explain ..." always safe?

  If I allow a group of users to submit "explain $whatever" to mysql (via Perl's DBI using DBD::mysql), is there anything that a user could put into $whatever that would make any database changes, leak non-trivial information, or even cause significant database load? If so, how? I know that via "explain $whatever" one can figure out what tables / columns exist (you have to guess names, though) and roughly how many records are in a table or how many records have a particular value for an indexed field. I don't expect one to be able to get any information about the contents of unindexed fields. DBD::mysql should not allow multiple statements so I don't expect it to be possible to run any query (just explain one query). Even subqueries should not be executed, just explained. But I'm not a mysql expert and there are surely features of mysql that I'm not even aware of. In trying to come up with a query plan, might the optimizer actual execute an expression in order to come up with the value that an indexed field is going to be compared against? explain select * from atable where class = somefunction(...) where atable.class is indexed and not unique and class='unused' would find no records but class='common' would find a million records. Might 'explain' evaluate somefunction(...)? And then could somefunction(...) be written such that it modifies data?

• Standard term for a thread I/O reorder buffer?

  I have a case where many threads all concurrently generate data that is ultimately written to one long, serial file. I need to somehow serialize these writes so that the file gets written in the right order. ie, I have an input queue of 2048 jobs j0..jn, each of which produces a chunk of data oi. The jobs run in parallel on, say, eight threads, but the output blocks have to appear in the file in the same order as the corresponding input blocks — the output file has to be in the order o0o1o2... The solution to this is pretty self evident: I need some kind of buffer that accumulates and writes the output blocks in the correct order, similar to a CPU reorder buffer in Tomasulo's algorithm, or to the way that TCP reassembles out-of-order packets before passing them to the application layer. Before I go code it, I'd like to do a quick literature search to see if there are any papers that have solved this problem in a particularly clever or efficient way, since I have severe realtime and memory constraints. I can't seem to find any papers describing this though; a Scholar search on every permutation of [threads, concurrent, reorder buffer, reassembly, io, serialize] hasn't yielded anything useful. I feel like I must just not be searching the right terms. Is there a common academic name or keyword for this kind of pattern that I can search on?

  Let's consider 2 tables "schools" and "students". Now a student may belong to different schools in his life, and a school have many students. So this is a many to many example. A third table "links" specify the relation between student and school. Now to query this I do the following: Select sc.sid , -- stands for school id st.uid, -- stands for student id sc.sname, -- stands for school name st.uname, -- stands for student name -- select more data about the student joining other tables for that from students s left join links l on l.uid=st.uid -- l.uid stands for the student id on the links table left join schools sc on sc.sid=l.sid -- l.sid is the id of the school in the links table where st.uid=3 -- 3 is an example this query will return duplicate data for the user id if he has more than one school, so to fix this I added group by st.uid, yet I also need the list of school name related to the same user. Is there a way to do it with fixing the query I wrote instead of having 2 queries? So as example I want to have Luci of schools ( X, Y, Z, R, ...) etc

• Calling a jQuery plugin inside itself

  I am trying to create a comet like thing. I have a plugin that collects data from a php page. The problem is that i dont know how to call the plugin inside itself.   I have an nHibernate query using Criteria, and I am trying to cast a string to bool in the query itself. I have done the same with casting a string to int, and that works well (the "DataField" property is "1" as a string): var result = Session .CreateCriteria<Car>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq((Projections.Cast(NHibernateUtil.Int32, Projections.Property("DataField"), 1)) .List<Car>(); tx.Commit(); But I am trying to do the same with bool, but I do not get the expected result: var result = Session .CreateCriteria<Car>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq((Projections.Cast(NHibernateUtil.bool, Projections.Property("DataField"), true)) .List<Car>(); tx.Commit(); "DataField" is the string "True", but the result in an empty list, where it should contain 100 elements with the "DataField" property string set to "True". I have tried with the string "true", and "1", but the result is still an empty List. [EDIT] As Commented below, I could check for the string "True" or "False", but I would say this is a more general question than just for the Boolean. Note that the idea is to have some sort of key value representation of the data, where the value can be different data types. I need the value table to contain all data, so storing the data as string seems like the cleanest solution! I have been able to use the method above to store both int and double as string, and to the cast in the query, but I have not succeeded using the same method for DateDime and Boolean. And for DateTime it is crucial to have the actual DateTime object. How can I make the cast from string to bool, and string to DateTime work in the queries? Thanks

• How To Join Tables from Two Different Contexts with LINQ2SQL?

  I have 2 data contexts in my application (different databases) and need to be able to query a table in context A with a right join on a table in context B. How do I go about doing this in LINQ2SQL? Why?: We are using a SaaS product for tracking our time, projects, etc. and would like to send new service requests to this product to prevent our team from duplicating data entry. Context A: This db stores service request information. It is a third party DB and we are not able to make changes to the structure of this DB as it could have unintended non-supportable consequences downstream. Context B: This data stores the "log" data of service requests that have been processed. My team and I have full control over this DB's structure, etc. Unprocessed service requests should find their way into this DB and another process will identify it as not being processed and send the record to the SaaS product. This is the query that I am looking to modify. I was able to do a !list.Contains(c.swHDCaseId) initially, but this cannot handle more than 2100 items.   Hello guys. I want to show my users PDF files. The reason why I use cgi to show the pdf is I want to track the clicks for the pdf, and cloak the real location of the saved pdf. I've been searching on the Internet and only found how to show save dialog to the users and creating a pdf, not show the files to the users. What I wanted for is show the users my pdf files, not creating or download the pdf. Currently I am using fgetcsv to parse through the file row by row and insert data into Database and so right now I am hitting database for each line of data present in csv file so currently database hit count is 100K which is not good from performance point of view.   Hello, I want to generate triangles from points and optional relations between them. Not all points form triangles, but many of them do. In the initial structure, I've got a database with the following tables: Nodes(id, value) Relations(id, nodeA, nodeB, value) Triangles(id, relation1_id, relation2_id, relation3_id) In order to generate triangles from both nodes and relations table, I've used the following query: INSERT INTO Triangles SELECT t1.id, t2.id , t3.id, FROM Relations t1, Relations t2, Relations t3 WHERE t1.id < t2.id AND t3.id > t1.id AND ( t1.nodeA = t2.nodeA AND (t3.nodeA = t1.nodeB AND t3.nodeB = t2.nodeB OR t3.nodeA = t2.nodeB AND t3.nodeB = t1.nodeB) OR t1.nodeA = t2.nodeB AND (t3.nodeA = t1.nodeB AND t3.nodeB = t2.nodeA OR t3.nodeA = t2.nodeA AND t3.nodeB = t1.nodeB) ) It's working perfectly on small sized data. (~< 50 points) In some cases however, I've got around 100 points all related to each other which leads to thousands of relations. So when the expected number of triangles is in the hundreds of thousands, or even in the millions, the query might take several hours. My main problem is not in the select query, while I see it execute in Management Studio, the returned results slow. I received around 2000 rows per minute, which is not acceptable for my case. As a matter of fact, the size of operations is being added up exponentionally and that is terribly affecting the performance. I've tried doing it as a LINQ to object from my code, but the performance was even worse. I've also tried using SqlBulkCopy on a reader from C# on the result, also with no luck. So the question is... Any ideas or workarounds?

  Hey So I have a question about posting using an XMLHttpRequest. In theory, if I am to post a username and password to an https domain (which I have yet to get working, unfortunately) would the responseText then change to the next website, or should the text fields become filled in? What normally happens is you navigate to this page via browser, enter a username and password, and it uses a POST method when the submit button is clicked, doing some authentication under the hood and returning a different page. Since I only need to output the data for specific sheets I added an if statement in the process method to test for the specific sheets. • Multithreading using pthread in C++ with shared variables

  I'm new to threading (and C/C++ for that matter), and I'm attempting to use multiple threads to access shared variables. In the main, I've created a variable char inputarray[100]; Thread 1: This thread will be reading data from stdin in 2 byte bursts, and appending them to the inputarray. (input by feeding a file in) Thread 2: This thread will be reading data 1 byte at a time, performing a calculation, and putting its data into an output array. Thread 3: This thread will be outputting data from the output array in 2 byte bursts. (stdout) I've attempted the input part and got it working by passing a struct, but would like to do it without using a struct, but it has been giving me problems. If I can get input down, I'm sure I'll be able to use a similar strategy to complete output. Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Looking for an email template engine for end-users ...

  We have a number of customers that we have to send monthly invoices too. Right now, I'm managing a codebase that does SQL queries against our customer database and billing database and places that data into emails - and sends it. I grow weary of maintaining this every time we want to include a new promotion or change our customer service phone numbers. So, I'm looking for a replacement to move more of this into the hands of those requesting the changes. In my ideal world, I need : A WYSIWYG (man, does anyone even say that anymore?) email editor that generates templates based upon the output from a Database Query. The ability to drag and drop various fields from the database query into the email template. Display of sample email results with the database query. Web application, preferably not requiring IIS. Involve as little code as possible for the end-user, but allow basic functionality (i.e. arrays/for loops) Either comes with it's own email delivery engine, or writes output in a way that I can easily write a Python script to deliver the email. Support for generic Database Connectors. (I need MSSQL and MySQL) F/OSS So ... can anyone suggest a project like this, or some tools that'd be useful for rolling my own? (My current alternative idea is using something like ERB or Tenjin, having them write the code, but not having live-preview for the editor would suck...)

• Run Reporting Service in local mode and generate columns automatically?

  Hi, I have a SQL query right now which I want to use with the MS reporting services in my ASP.NET application. So I created a report in local mode (rdlc) and attached this to a report viewer. Since my query uses parameters, I created a stored procedure, which had exactly those parameters. In addition to that I had some textboxes which are used for entering the params for the query and a button to call the stored proc and to fill the datatset which is bound to the report viewer. This works, I press the button and according to what I entred the correct data is shown. Now my question: In the future I plan to have multiple reports (which will be selected in a dropdown) and I wonder if I can somehow just call the correct stored procedure and according to the columns which are *SELECT*ed in the procedure, the columns are shown in the report. Example: I select report1 from the dropdown (procedure for report 1 is called), 5 columns are shown in the reportviewer. I select report2 from dropdown (procedure for report 2 is called), 8 columns are shown. Is that possible somehow? Thanks :-)

  I had following error from Google App Engine when I was trying to iterate list in JSP page with EL. I understood that detachCopyAll() method should do same what I did, but that method should be part of data nucelus, so it should be used instead of my owm methods. So why dosen't detachCopyAll() work at all?

Input As input for playing this game you will receive a text file containing an integer N, the number of word sets you need to play your game against. This will be followed by N word sets, each starting with an integer M, the number of words in the set, followed by M words. All tokens in the input will be separated by some whitespace and, aside from N and M, will consist entirely of lowercase letters.   I am new to Java. I wrote an applet with a gui that sends results (int w and int p) to a server, and I get the "411 Length Required" error. What am I doing wrong? How do you set a Content-Length? • problem in case of window service

  Hello friends, i made a windows service & add project installer.in which only contain this code. System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(@"C:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe"); inside the timer tick event & interval is 60 sec.i just wanted to try to run Windows service. 1st-serviceProcessInstaller1 i have been changed its account setting as local system. 2nd-serviceInstaller1 in this case i have been changed its start up type as Automatic. then i create a setup add another project then right click add project output then add primary output then press ok. then go to Right click on project-view-custom Action-right click on Install-Add custom Action-select Application folder & add primary output.the same thing done for all the remaining options like commit,rollback,uninstall. after that i build the setup it build succesfully then i install the setup it installed properly into program file n create one .exe file n one Instalfile. but problem is that when i search the service into "services.msc" the service is not there. means service is not showing there.i tried but not getting the ans.plz help me to solve this problem.

• Grails one-to-many mapping with joinTable

  I have two domain-classes. One is a "Partner" the other is a "Customer". A customer can be a part of a Partner and a Partner can have 1 or more Customers: class Customer { Integer id String name static hasOne = [partner:Partner] static mapping = { partner joinTable:[name:'PartnerMap',column:'partner_id',key:'customer_id'] } } class Partner { Integer id static hasMany = [customers:Customer] static mapping = { customers joinTable:[name:'PartnerMap',column:'customer_id',key:'partner_id'] } } However, whenever I try to see if a customer is a part of a partner, like this: def customers = Customer.list() customers.each { if (it.partner) { println "Partner!" } } I get the following error: org.springframework.dao.InvalidDataAccessResourceUsageException: could not execute query; SQL [select this_.customer_id as customer1_162_0_, this_.company as company162_0_, this_.display_name as display3_162_0_, this_.parent_customer_id as parent4_162_0_, this_.partner_id as partner5_162_0_, this_.server_id as server6_162_0_, this_.status as status162_0_, this_.vertical_market as vertical8_162_0_ from Customer this_]; nested exception is org.hibernate.exception.SQLGrammarException: could not execute query It looks as if Grails is thinking partner_id is a part of the Customer query, and it's not... It is in the PartnerMap table, which is supposed to find the customer_id, then get the Partner from the corresponding partner_id. Anyone have any clue what I'm doing wrong? Edit: I forgot to mention I'm doing this with legacy database tables. So I have a Partner, Customer and PartnerMap table. PartnerMap has simply a customer_id and partner_id field.

  How do I pass an EF expression as a method argument? To illustrate my question I have created a pseudo code example: The first example is my method today. The example utilizes EF and a Fancy Retry Logic. What I need to do is to encapsulate the Fancy Retry Logic so that it becomes more generic and does not duplicate. In the second example is how I want it to be, with a helper method that accepts the EF expression as an argument. This would be a trivial thing to do with SQL, but I want to do it with EF so that I can benefit from the strongly typed objects.
