  • How do I recover from a grub renaming issue?

    I am currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 with grub 1.98 as the bootloader. I recently decided to edit the grub menu to remove the old Ubuntu kernels, so I followed the instructions of this guide and added the line list='version_find_latest $list' to the 10_linux file, then ran sudo update-grub. Apparently I made a mistake, because upon restart I had these bootloader entries: Ubuntu, with Linux $list Ubuntu, with Linux $list (recovery mode) Ubuntu, with Linux version_find_latest Ubuntu, with Linux version_find_latest (recovery mode) When I try to load any of these, I get a grub error along the lines of, Error: not a normal file Now I can't start any version of Ubuntu to remove the line I added. What's the best course of action to be able to use Ubuntu again? Thanks.

  • How do I efficiently code both the client and server at the same time?

    I'm coding my game using a client-server model. When playing on singleplayer, the game starts a local server, and interacts with it just like a remote server (multiplayer). I have done this to avoid coding separate singleplayer and multiplayer code. I have just started coding and have encountered a major problem. Currently I'm developing the game in Eclipse, having all the game classes organized into packages. Then, in my server code, I just use all the classes in the client packages. The problem is, these client classes have variables that are specific to rendering, which obviously wouldn't be performed on a server. Should I create modified versions of the client classes to use in the server? Or should I just modify the client classes with a boolean, to indicate if its the client/server using it. Are there any other options I have? I just had a thought about maybe using the server class as the core class, then extending it with rendering stuff?

    Hi there. I hace a web application where I create some folders on my server and put executables there. Then I try to wun them with chroot but I get a message that access is denied there. I tried chroot -r 777 blah blah.... and then I get a message that the folder or the file that I call (sudo chroot mydirectory myfile_inside_Mydirectory) does not exist. This happens only when I call chroot on folders created by the web server. My web application is in php and I use: shell_exec("cp -R /var/www/comp/prison/bin $dir"); shell_exec("cp -R /var/www/comp/prison/lib $dir"); shell_exec("cp /var/www/janitor.out $dir/janitor.out"); shell_exec("sudo chmod -R 777 $dir"); $process = proc_open("sudo chroot $dir janitor.out", $descriptorspec, $pipes); sudo does not need password.

  • Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

    I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts?     I am the only one who will have access to my website. Just installed my VPS and managed to get most stuff working. However, stuck on the "members" part. Currently, everything has been done as "root". I have read posts that I should create a user, because root isn't ideal. I have found thousand guides on how to create a user, but now what to do next. 1- Should I create a user with adduser username and then add the user to a group? But which group? 2- And will the user then be able to do everything as I have done logged on as "root"? 3- And somebody plz explain what "sudo" has to do with this? (if anything at all) Thanks

  • Why Ubuntu One pretends to sychronize files, but it doesn't?

    I have my Ubuntu One account configured in both Ubuntu 11.10 and iOS (ipod-touch). The photos from the iOS were successfully uploaded, but in Ubuntu One, although it shows the "syncing" and "synchronized" marks over the icons, the files are not showing in the website (one.ubuntu.com). In short: My files are not showing in the Ubuntu One website, although the icons have the "uploaded" mark. Any idea what can be wrong here? obs1: Also, not sure if it's related, the icon-marks will show only when I open the Ubuntu One Control Panel. It shows the message "file was uploaded", but there's nothing online. obs2: The folder I'm trying to synchronize is 30mb size. And my connection is 8mbps.

    SQL Server (2012 Enterprise) Browser service failing I have a problem as described below: I have an instance of SQL Server 2012 Enterprise (thanks to MSDN) for local development on my PC. I try to start SQL server Browser Service from SQL Server Configuration Manager and it takes a long time to fail, then fails with: The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details. I checked event logs and found these errors in this order (all within the same 1-second time frame): The SQL Server Browser service port is unavailable for listening, or invalid. The SQL Server Browser service was unable to establish SQL instance and connectivity discovery. The SQL Server Browser is enabling SQL instance and connectivity discovery support. The SQL Server Browser service was unable to establish Analysis Services discovery. The SQL Server Browser service has started. The SQL Server Browser service has shutdown. I checked firewall rules and both port 1433 (TCP) and 1434 (UDP) are wide open, just as well - the programs and service binary had been "allowed through windows firewall". I started the "Analysis Services" service by hand and it works fine. Browser still won't start. Some History: Installed SQL 2008 R2 express advanced Installed SQL2012 Express advanced Uninstalled SQL 2008 R2 express advanced Installed 2012 SSDT and lots of features with Express install Installed a unique instance of SQL 2012 Enterprise with all features Uninstalled SSDT and reinstalled SSDT with Enterprise (solved a different problem) Uninstalled SQL 2012 Express Uninstalled SQL 2012 Enterprise Removed anything with "SQL" in the name from Control panel "Programs and features" Installed SQL 2012 Enterprise without Analysis services (This is where I noticed SQL Browser service was failing to start even on the install) Added the feature of Analysis Services (and everything else) via the installer (Browser continued to fail to start on the install) ======================== Other interesting facts: opening a command window with administrator and trying to run sqlbrowser.exe manually yielded: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.     I set up an UbuntuOne account on PC1 (Ubuntu 10.10) and the same account on PC2 (Ubuntu 10.04). I did the following: Created file named maverick.txt in PC1's ~/Ubuntu One/log Created file named venus.txt in PC2's ~/Ubuntu One/log Bot files appeared in one.ubuntu.com A few hours later, those two files are disappeared from PC1's Ubuntu One/log PC2's Ubuntu One/log one.ubuntu.com So, my files are gone forever. Why did this happen? Is there any way to recover those files?

  • I install Ubuntu 13.10 and reboot and im on KDE desktop?

    Hi I'm Jacob and I have no idea what's going on. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 today and was playing around with it for a while and dl'd a bunch of apps from software center and stuff. Eventually I installed steam and (finally) got it working. I downloaded TF2 and had some weird issue where the screen got so distorted to the point I could not play. So I dl'd a driver for my graphics card from the additional drivers app (or whatever it's called) and when it was done I restarted my computer (because it said to.) When the PC booted up it loaded the KDE desktop and I have no idea why. I had unity before I rebooted. Ubuntu 13.10 is the only OS installed on my PC, and I still have all the apps that I downloaded, but I kinda like unity (I started using Ubuntu after they switched to unity) and want it back.   • Hyper-V virtual machine unable to get IP address from DHCP server running on same physical box

    We have a Windows server 2008 R2 with two network cards running AD, DHCP, DNS and Hyper-V The first nic is setup with a static IP address and DHCP, WDS, and DNS are bound to it. The second nic is configured in Hyper-V to be only used by Hyper-V and has been automatically configured so that only the virtual switch is enabled on the adapter. DHCP and DNS work fine for all physical machines on the network. It also works for Virtual Machines running on another physical box. Virtual machines that are bound to the virtual switch network adapter are unable to get a IP address. If the virtual machine is given a static IP address with correct subnet, gateway and dns everything works. Has anyone else got this working?

The computer that cannot ping the server is setup to use the DNS server running on the server only (secondary dns points to nothing) and it will resolve the hostname of the server to the external IP not internal when the other two computers correctly resolve the internal All 3 computers and server are connected directly into the same switch. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks
