Usage of IcmpSendEcho2 with an asynchronous callback

I've been reading the MSDN documentation for IcmpSendEcho2 and it raises more questions than it answers. I'm familiar with asynchronous callbacks from other Win32 APIs such as ReadFileEx... I provide a buffer which I guarantee will be reserved for the driver's use until the operation completes with any result other than IO_PENDING, I get my callback in case of either success or failure (and call GetCompletionStatus to find out which). Timeouts are my responsibility and I can call CancelIo to abort processing, but the buffer is still reserved until the driver cancels the operation and calls my completion routine with a status of CANCELLED. And there's an OVERLAPPED structure which uniquely identifies the request through all of this. IcmpSendEcho2 doesn't use an OVERLAPPED context structure for asynchronous requests. And the documentation is unclear excessively minimalist about what happens if the ping times out or fails (failure would be lack of a network connection, a missing ARP entry for local peers, ICMP destination unreachable response from an intervening router for remote peers, etc). Does anyone know whether the callback occurs on timeout and/or failure? And especially, if no response comes, can I reuse the buffer for another call to IcmpSendEcho2 or is it forever reserved in case a reply comes in late? I'm wanting to use this function from a Win32 service, which means I have to get the error-handling cases right and I can't just leak buffers (or if the API does leak buffers, I have to use a helper process so I have a way to abandon requests). There's also an ugly incompatibility in the way the callback is made. It looks like the first parameter is consistent between the two signatures, so I should be able to use the newer PIO_APC_ROUTINE as long as I only use the second parameter if an OS version check returns Vista or newer? Although MSDN says "don't do a Windows version check", it seems like I need to, because the set of versions with the new argument aren't the same as the set of versions where the function exists in iphlpapi.dll. Pointers to additional documentation or working code which uses this function and an APC would be much appreciated. Please also let me know if this is completely the wrong approach -- i.e. if either using raw sockets or some combination of IcmpCreateFile+WriteFileEx+ReadFileEx would be more robust.

C# Bind DataTable to Existing DataGridView Column Definitions

I've been struggling with a NullReferenceException and hope someone here will be able to point me in the right direction. I'm trying to create and populate a DataTable and then show the results in a DataGridView control. The basic code follows, and Execution stops with a NullReferenceException at the point where I invoke the new UpdateResults_Delegate. Oddly enough, I can trace entries.Rows.Count successfully before I return it from QueryEventEntries, so I can at least show 1) entries is not a null reference, and 2) the DataTable contains rows of data. I am refactoring old code that retrieved records from a database, collected those records as an array, and then later iterated through the array to populate a DataGridView row by row. Threading was originally implemented to compensate and keep the UI responsive during the unnecessary looping. I have since stripped out Thread/Invoke; everything now occurs on the same execution thread (thank you, Sam). I am attempting to replace the slow, unwieldy approach using a DataTable which I can fill with a DataAdapter, and assign to the DataGridView through it's DataSource property (above code updated). I've iterated through the entries DataTable's rows to verify the table contains the expected data before assigning it as the DataGridView's DataSource. foreach (DataRow row in entries.Rows) { System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine( String.Format("{0} {1} {2}", row[0], row[1], row[2])); } One of the column of the DataGridView is a custom DataGridViewColumn to stylize the event_type value. I apologize I didn't mention this before in the original post but I wasn't aware it was important to my problem. I have converted this column temporarily to a standard DataGridViewTextBoxColumn control and am no longer experiencing the Exception. The fields in the DataTable are appended to the list of fields that have been pre-specified in Design view of the DataGridView. The records' values are being populated in these appended fields. When the run time attempts to render the cell a null value is provided (as the value that should be rendered is done so a couple columns over). In light of this, I am re-titling and re-tagging the question. I would still appreciate it if others who have experienced this can instruct me on how to go about binding the DataTable to the existing column definitions of the DataGridView.

NullReferenceException when changing skin/theme via Application.Current.Resources

I am writing an wpf application with multiple skins. The code to switch theme is as below: try { Application.Current.Resources.MergedDictionaries.Add( resource ); } catch( Exception ex ) { } The first time the code is called (to switch to a new theme), it is executed successfully; however, any subsequent calls to the same code would throw System.NullReferenceException. The way I set up my themes are similar to what described here: http://www.codewrecks.com/blog/index.php/2008/05/22/simple-skinnable-and-theme-management-in-wpf-user-interface/. Has anyone seen this error before? How do I go about debugging this since the exception is thrown else where? Any help is greatly appreciated. I am getting the following error when trying to use the WCF Test Client to hit my new web service. What is weird is every once in awhile it will execute once then start popping this error. Failed to invoke the service. Possible causes: The service is offline or inaccessible; the client-side configuration does not match the proxy; the existing proxy is invalid. Hi Guys, I'm constructing a geolocation based application and I'm trying to figure out a way to make my application realise when a user is facing the direction of the given location (a particular long / lat co-ord). I've got the math figured, I just have the triangle to construct. //UPDATE So I've figured out a good bit of this... Below is a method which takes in a long / lat value and attempts to compute a triangle finding a point 700 meters away and one to its left + right. It'd then use these to construct the triangle. It computes the correct longitude but the latitude ends up somewhere off the coast of east Africa. I got the formula from this site.. http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html It appears correct and I've tested multiple things... I've tried converting to Radians then post computations back to degrees, etc. etc. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this method so that it will map the triangle ONLY 700 meters in from my current location in the direction that I am facing? I don't think that's what is happening though. Dell suggested that the author try using the Performance profile, but that didn't help. He ended up applying some settings in Dell's guide for configuring a server for low latency environments and one of those settings (or a combination thereof) seems to have fixed the problem. Kernel.org bug #36182 notes that power-limit interrupt debugging was enabled by default, which is causing performance degradation in scenarios where CPU voltage regulation is kicking in. A RHN KB article (RHN login required) mentions a problem impacting PE r620 and r720 servers not running the Performance profile, and recommends an update to a kernel released two weeks ago. ...Except we are running the Performance profile... Everything I can find online is running me in circles here. What's the heck is going on?

I've got Hudson (continuous integration system) with the git plugin running on a Tomcat Windows Service. msysgit is installed and the msysgit bin dir is in the path. PuTTY/Pageant/plink are installed and msysgit is configured to use them. When I run a job that attempts to clone the git repository I get the following error: $ git clone -o origin git@hostname:project.git "e:\HUDSON_HOME\jobs\Project Trunk\workspace" ERROR: Error cloning remote repo 'origin' : Could not clone git@hostname:project.git ERROR: Cause: Error performing git clone -o origin git@hostname:project.git e:\HUDSON_HOME\jobs\Project Trunk\workspace Trying next repository ERROR: Could not clone from a repository FATAL: Could not clone hudson.plugins.git.GitException: Could not clone Running git clone -o origin git@hostname:project.git "e:\HUDSON_HOME\jobs\Project Trunk\workspace" from the command line works without error. I've confirmed that my issue is not the same as http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1177292/hudson-git-clone-error because git is in the path and I don't get any error about the git executable on Hudson's Configure System page. This leads me to believe that the problem is that the user who owns the Tomcat/Hudson Windows service (Local System) has no SSH key set up to be able to clone the git repository. My question is, how can I set things up so that the git plugin/msysgit know to use a particular SSH key when trying to clone? I don't think Pageant will work because the Tomcat service is running as the "Local System" user, but I may be wrong. I have tried setting Pageant up as a service (using runassvc.exe), passing the appropriate key, and having it run as "Local System". The Tomcat/Hudson service doesn't seem to be able to see the key from the pageant service. Are there any other techniques for setting up a key? Thanks. EDIT: The discussion on http://n4.nabble.com/Hudson-with-git-and-ssh-td375633.html shows that someone else had a similar question. ssh-agent was suggested and this tool does come with msysgit but I'm not sure how to use it in conjunction with the Hudson service. WCF app Deployed on Win7 Machine and get connection refused error

I have created a Sync Framework application based on the following sample from microsoft and deployed it to a new Windows 7 machine for testing. The app runs ok but when I attempt to communicate I get the following error: Could not connect to http://localhost:8000/RelationalSyncContract/SqlSyncService/. TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8000. I am wondering if there is something I am missing. This is my first experience using WCF and followed microsoft sample code. I have disabled the firewall and opened port 8000 for both TCP and UDP. Not sure what to look at next. Can't get gitosis and ssh to play nice on cygwin

I have followed this guide to setting up gitosis on a windows 2003 server via cygwin. I have now got to a point where it largely works. I can clone, pull and push. The problem I am having is that I think I have not got the ssh bit right at all. When I connect via msysgit from machines and accounts where I have not created or uploaded ssh keys it works. Every time I clone, pull or push I get a password challenge for the 'git' user running on the server but basically I can execute git commands. Update 1: When I try to clone a non-existant repo, I get the same error message, co-incidence? Update 2: Wierd, I've got one machine and one login working. It seems to be something to do with the syntax for addressing git over ssh. This now works on one machine for one login: git clone git@servername:cris.git The same command fails for a user on another machine without an uploaded ssh key. But this command works (after being challanged for git@servername's password) git clone git@servername:/home/git/repositories/cris.git neither command works on a 2nd login whose ssh key has been uploaded

How to use SQL file streaming win32 API and support WCF streaming

I'm using Sql server file stream type to store large files in the backend. I'm trying to use WCf to stream the file across to the clients. I'm able to get the handle to the file using SQLFileStream (API). I then try to return this stream. I have implemenetd data chunking on the client side to retrive the data from the stream. I'm able to do it for regular filestream and memory stream. Also if i convert then sqlfilestream in to memorystream that also works. The only think that doesn't work is when I try to return sqlfilestream. What am I doing wrong. I have tried both nettcpbinding with streaming enabled and http binding with MTOM encoding. This is the error message am getting : Socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your mesage or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network issue.. Local socket timneout was 00:09:59.... W3WP crashes when initializing a collection

I've created an ASP.NET MVC application that has an initializer attached to the PreApplicationStartMethodAttribute. When initializing, a collection is instantiated that implements an interface I've defined. If I leave the instantiation, w3wp crashes. If I modify the interface, w3wp still crashes. I've tried every variation I could come up with on the theme of keeping the instantiation but doing everything else differently, but w3wp still crashes. My biggest issue here is that I have absolutely no idea why w3wp is crashing. It's not a StackOverflowException or anything concrete like that, all I get is the unintelligent junk cited above. I've tried to use DebugDiag and IISState to debug the w3wp process, but DebugDiag is only available for post-dump analysis in x64 (I'm running on Windows 7 x64, so the w3wp process is thus 64 bit) and IISStat says the following when I try to run it: D:\Programs\iisstate>IISState.exe -p 9204 -d Symbol search path is: SRV*D:\Programs\iisstate\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols IISState is limited to processes associated with IIS. If you require a generic debugger, please use WinDBG or CDB. They are available for download from http://www.microsoft.com/ddk/debugging. This error may also occur if a debugger is already attached to the process being checked. Incorrect Process Attachment I've double-checked 10 times that the process ID of my w3wp process is correct. I'm suspecting that IISState too only can debug x86 processes. Setting a breakpoint anywhere in the application does absolutely nothing. The break point isn't hit and w3wp crashes as soon as the request comes through to IIS from the browser. Starting the application with F5 in Visual Studio 2010 or starting another application to get the w3wp process up and running and then attaching the VS2010 debugger to it and then visiting the faulting application doesn't help. I've also tried to add an HTTP module as described in KB-911816 as well as add this to my web.config file: <configuration> <runtime> <legacyUnhandledExceptionPolicy enabled="true" /> </runtime> </configuration> Needless to say, it makes absolutely no difference. So I'm left with no way to debug the w3wp process, no way to extract any information from it and complete garbage dumped in my event log. If anybody has any idea on how to debug this problem, please let me know! Update My collection was initialized based on RouteTable.Routes which might have thrown an exception (perhaps by not being initialized itself yet in such an early stage of the ASP.NET lifecycle). Postponing the communication with RouteTable.Routes until a later stage solved the problem. While I don't really need an answer to this question anymore, I still find it so obscure that I'll leave it for anyone to comment on and answer, because I found no existing posts on this problem anywhere, so it might be of good reference in the future.

C++ custom exceptions: run time performance and passing exceptions from C++ to C

I am writing a custom C++ exception class (so I can pass exceptions occuring in C++ to another language via a C API). The information I want to pass to the C side is the following: (a). What (b). Where (c). Simple Stack Trace (just the sequence of error messages in order they occured, no debugging info etc) I want to modify my C API, so that the API functions take a pointer to a struct ExceptionInfo, which will contain any exception info (if an exception occured) before consuming the results of the invocation. This raises two questions: Question 1 1. Implementation of each of the C++ methods exposed in the C API needs to be enclosed in a try/catch statement. The performance implications for this seem quite serious (according to this article): "It is a mistake (with high runtime cost) to use C++ exception handling for events that occur frequently, or for events that are handled near the point of detection." At the same time, I remember reading somewhere in my C++ days, that all though exception handling is expensive, it only becmes expensive when an exception actually occurs. So, which is correct?. what to do?. Is there an alternative way that I can trap errors safely and pass the resulting error info to the C API?. Or is this a minor consideration (the article after all, is quite old, and hardware have improved a bit since then). Question 2 I wuld like to modify the exception class given in that article, so that it contains a simple stack trace, and I need some help doing that. Again, in order to make the exception class 'lightweight', I think its a good idea not to include any STL classes, like string or vector (good idea/bad idea?). Which potentially leaves me with a fixed length C string (char*) which will be stack allocated. So I can maybe just keep appending messages (delimted by a unique separator [up to maximum length of buffer])... Its been a while since I did any serious C++ coding, and I will be grateful for the help. My task is to move a file from the client file system to the server file system (the server can be accessed using remote IP, so I cannot use a shared folder as destination, this is why I need a CLR stored procedure). So I plan to: 1) store from Delphi the file in a varbinary(max) column of a temporary table 2) call the CLR stored procedure to create a file at the desired path using the data contained in the varbinary(max) field Imagine I need to move C:\MyFile.pdf to Z:\MyFile.pdf, where C: is a harddrive on local system and Z: is an harddrive on the server. I provide the code below (not working) that someone can modify to make it work? Here I suppose to have a table called MyTable with two fields: ID (int) and DATA (varbinary(max)). Please note it doesn't make a difference if the table is a real temporary table or just a table where I temporarly store the data. I would appreciate if some exception handling code is there (so that I can manage an "impossible to save file" exception). I would like to be able to write a new file or overwrite the file if already existing. I want to upload some files of size 35MB on to the blob container. I have coded for splitting the data into blocks and upload it on to the blob container and form a blob using PUT. I tested the code for some files of Size 2MB or something... It worked well. But When I tried it for a large MB file, its giving me this error Server Error 404 - File or directory not found. JBoss EJB Bean not bound

Handling Errors from HttpWebRequest.GetResponse

Hey experts - I'm having a ridiculous time trying to get an SMS API working (ZeepMobile, if you're interested) with .NET... I've been around .NET for a few years, but with all this social networking and API stuff, I need to get into the HttpWebRequest a bit. I'm new at it, but not completely new; I was able to hook up my site to Twitter without too much fuss (ie, I was able to modify someone's code to work for me). Anyways, the way their API works is to send an SMS message, you send them a POST and they respond back to you. I can send it just fine, but every time I do, rather than echo back something helpful to figure out what the error is, I get the Yellow Error Page Of Death (YEPOD) saying something to the effect of "The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request." This occurs on my line: '...creation of httpwebrequest here...' Team Foundation Server Setup/Access

What I need: A TFS 2010 Setup that allows 2 application developers to access the TFS from remote locations. How it is setup: Server 2008 Standard 2g Ram 300g HD space SharePoint Server 2007, using SQL Server 2005 SQL Server 2008 Standard Team Foundation Server 2010 IIS 7 Sharepoint Bindings: TFS.DynAccount.Me:80; TFS:80 TFS Bindings: TFS.DynAccount.Me:8080; TFS:8080 Using DynDNS service to account for the dynamic ip address being used, this is a requirement for the moment until I can get a better isp package. Access using Local Accounts Server is not setup on a domain, or as a domain. Consequently I did not setup AD services. Problem: When logged into TFS using my credentials TFS\AdminUser through the DynDNS account TFS.DynAccount.Me I recieve the 'Red X of Death' on the Documents and Reports folder. When logged into the TFS through the local peer to peer network using the same credentials TFS\AdminUser I do not receive the 'Red X of Death' problem. Further Troubleshooting: When users 'Right Click' the 'TeamProject1' Click 'Show Project Portal' it tries to take them to http://TFS:8080 instead of http://TFS.DynAccount.Me:8080, which doing further research I am assuming that it is because team foundation server was setup with a local name of TFS instead of 'TFS.DynAccount.Me' as specified here in Visual Studio Magazines: The Red X of Death. Users can Access the Team Portal for SharePoint via http://TFS.DynAccount.Me/TeamCollection/TeamProject so it is not like we are dead in the water or anything. However, as most employees/staff are prone to do, they have expressed a great distaste for having to do it this way and just be patient until the current project is finished since we are under a very strict deadline. Is there a way to set this up differently, or change some settings someplace, reinstall it, point a CName record for our domain website to the DynAccount (e.g. TFS.OurDomain.com points to TFS.DynAccount.Me, which consequently does allow access to the http site without issues), or something. I really don't feel like after all the time and effort I have spent into, first the cost, second the bloody install, third learning SharePoint well enough, fourth the hours into days spent on this, fifth more troubleshooting, sixth employee headaches to just let it lay where it is at. I figure in my spare/off time I would keep trying to get this to work. So I really appreciate any help any one can give me. I know this is probably something really stupid simple that I will 'Face Palm' over, but at the moment the stress and frustration just has me beat. How can I reliably check client identity whilst making DCOM calls to a C# .Net 3.5 Server?

Hi, I have an old Win32 C++ DCOM Server that I am rewriting to use C# .Net 3.5. The client applications sit on remote XP machines and are also written in C++. These clients must remain unchanged, hence I must implement the interfaces on new .Net objects. This has been done, and is working successfully regarding the implementation of the interfaces, and all of the calls are correctly being made from the old clients to the new .Net objects. However, I'm having problems obtaining the identity of the calling user from the DCOM Client. In order to try to identify the user who instigated the DCOM call, I have the following code on the server... What I have noticed is that the first few users have their DCOM calls handled on their own thread (ie all calls from a particular client are handled by a single unique thread), and then subsequent users are being handled by the same threads as the earlier users, and after the call to CoImpersonateClient(), the CurrentPrincipal matches that of the initial user of that thread. To Illustrate: User Tom makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 1 (CurrentPrincipal correctly identifies Tom) User Dick makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 2 (CurrentPrincipal correctly identifies Dick) User Harry makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 3 (CurrentPrincipal correctly identifies Harry) User Bob makes DCOM calls which are handled by thread 3 (CurrentPrincipal incorrectly identifies him as Harry) As you can see in this illustration, calls from clients Harry and Bob are being handled on thread 3, and the server is identifying the calling client as Harry. Is there something that I am doing wrong? Are there any caveats or restrictions on using Impersonations in this way? Is there a better or different way that I can RELIABLY achieve what I am trying to do? All help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Andrew

ASP.NET Web Service Throws 401 (unauthorized) Error

Hi Experts, I have this .NET application to be run in an intranet environment. It is configured so that it requires Windows Authentication before you can access the website (Anonymous access is disabled). This website calls a web service (enable anonymous access) and the web service calls the DB. We do have a token-based authentication between the web application and the web service to secure the communication between them. The issue I'm facing is that when I deploy this to production, I'm having an intermittent issue whereby the communication between the web application and the web service failed. The 401 issue was thrown. This is actually working fine in our QA environment. Is this an issue with Active Directory? Or could it be an isssue with FQDN as mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896861? The weirdest thing is that this is happening intermittently when tested in both on the server itself and a remote workstation in my client's environment. [Android] Launching activity from widget

Hi, I'm trying to do something which really ought to be quite easy, but it's driving me crazy. I'm trying to launch an activity when a home screen widget is pressed, such as a configuration activity for the widget. I think I've followed word for word the tutorial on the Android Developers website, and even a few unofficial tutorials as well, but I must be missing something important as it doesn't work.
