• Smooth scrolling in Emacs/Windows

  As the subject title says, has anyone any suggestions for how to achieve smooth scrolling of the text display in emacs? The various approaches suggested on the Emacs wiki seem to work only in Linux. I'm using EmacsW32 for what it matters, but I tested with the standard Emacs distribution as well, with no results. As a long time Vim user, I'm fairly surprised that Emacs cannot scroll smoothly by itself.

• Ubuntu 9.10 Virtual Machine does not respond in VMWare Fusion

  I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 Edition in VMWare Fusion; the host is Mac OS X. I installed it successfully and I was even able to use. After shutting it down and reopening it, it no longer works. Here's what I see: I've checked the Virtual Machine settings. It appears as running. I waited for a long time, but there no response yet. Is there anything I can do apart from reinstalling it?

  Ok, so you hover over the items pinned to the Win 7 menu, and wait all month for it to pop out the sub menu containing recent items opened with the selected app. Is there a registry hack to speed this up? I want the sub menus quicker. Same applies to the delay before things Control Panel and Administrative Tools pop out their sub menus too. It just takes too long, so how to reduce that delay?

  Since Firefox 7 (or 6?) they silently removed "http" from the address bar. Previously, when you clicked it, "http" showed up again, allowing to easily just change http into https. So far, I found two ways to get it back, but isn't there a setting I can use to have it permanently in vision again, or at least when I click it?   I have installed vmware toolbox in ubuntu (guest OS). I tried to share a location from the settings of the virtual machine. But when I click Ok, the following error in thrown in the host (Win 7) OS. "Unable to update run-time folder sharing status: Unknown error." The location is not showing up in /mnt/ What could be the reason? P.S I have vmhgfs process running in my Ubuntu VM. I was following this method.

  PDF documents have hyperlinks to the contents on the same document (analogous to "#section" hrefs for an HTML document). Where's the back button to go back to the page I was on (where I clicked the hyperlink). Let's say I'm on the index of a PDF tutorial, page 4, and I click on Chapter 2's hyperlink in the index that takes me to page 38. Now, if I want to go back to page 4 again, which button or shortcut should I use?

• Why does Windows 7 change the properties of my shortcuts?

  I've got a shortcut on my desktop for an executable on a mapped drive. Lets say the Z: drive. If I change the mapping of the drive from say Z: to S: and then double click on that shortcut, my executable will open because Windows changed the properties of that shortcut to run from the S: drive. While this may be handy in some circumstances, its NOT for me. How can I prevent Windows from modifying my shortcut to what it thinks I want. Thanks

• Virtual Machine for software renting service

  I am currently trying to figure out which solution would be best for software renting service (with proper licensing and stuff). I know its kinda stupid and so on, but I just have to develop it. Long story short - user can connect to a virtual machine (with windows guest os) using vnc and use some specific software for some specific time (eg., 1 hour). I have already considered VirtualBox, Xen and some other, but maybe somebody has a better idea. Thanks.

  I am using the latest dev channel version of Chrome in Ubuntu 9.10. Before Chrome automatically updated a few days ago, I had the option to pin tabs. • Why my samba printer is not visible (after boot) until i restart smb ?

  I've an old hp1100 and ubuntu 9.10 and now upgraded to lucid prerelease. I can't see my printer on network (using smb://mycomputer on nautilus or \mycomputr from xp). As long as i will not restart smbd (on lucid: sudo restart smbd) my printer is not visible as network share. All file shares are always visible. My printer is visible and working after smbd restart Any clue what might cause this ?

When I click history it takes about 2 minutes for it to load and is frustrating. • What is a good set and forget file version tracking / backup application for windows?

  When I make changes to files, I keep on finding myself "saving as" and adding the current date to the file. It slows me down, and it creates a bunch of files that clot my folder. I would prefer to be able to Right Click on a file from the File Explorer and select to save different versions of this file, so that each time I save it, it saves a copy somewhere, that I can access in the future if necessary. Is there any application that achieves this?
