• Linux: Automatically switch to external monitor (VGA)

  I've got an eeePC with a really tiny monitor, so whenever I go (home, faculty, parent's home, friend's home, ...) I attach it to any external monitor I can find. If it matters my system is like this: Archlinux Linux 2.6.36 Xorg 7.6 X server 1.9.2 Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (fully accelerated by intel modules) When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr. Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?

• UFW blocking random packets on 443

  All, I have UFW setup to allow traffic on port 443. It works as expected, though I have a large amount of UFW Block log entries. To Action From -- ------ ---- 80 ALLOW Anywhere 443 ALLOW Anywhere 22222 ALLOW Anywhere 80 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 443 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22222 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) However in my syslog file I see this: [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=XXX SRC=<foreignip> DST=<serverip> LEN=40 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=116 ID=22025 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=49622 DPT=443 WINDOW=0 RES=0x00 ACK RST URGP=0 About 30 or so seconds later pound (which I'm using for SSL decryption and port redirection) throws a connection timed out messsage. I'm assuming this is because UFW is blocking the packet. I'm at a loss as to an explination. Could the packet be malformed or something, is this normal? Edit - I have since changed the /etc/defaults/ufw and set ipv6=no, so the v6 rules are no longer in the mix. The server is still showing the block / connection timed out behavior though.   I got have two Lifecam VX-2000's and they don't work in cheese anymore. I don't know if it's a problem with a missing package, or a package I installed. Here is the output.   I have an HDD with plenty of files, some of which are unfortunately corrupted. I'm now trying to copy the good files into a new HDD. I'm using: rsync -azP SRC TGT When rsync comes to one of the corrupted files, I can see a message in the console: rsync: read errors mapping XXX: Input/output error (5) In the target folder, I still see the corrupted file, which I'm not able to open and which I have to delete manually. Is there any option to tell rsync not to copy files after a i/o error?

  I'm using GNU Freetalk along with expect in order to send notifications to my phone – Freetalk has a readline interface, and I use expect to make a series of non interactive scripts that send information to another Jabber account. I'd like to have these scripts end freetalk 'properly' – that is to say user@domainname message one user@domainname message two /quit which would print out message one message two then quit. However Freetalk 'helpfully' adds user@domainame automatically so I get message one message two /quit as the output. The expect script still ends, but there's a delay. How would I stop Freetalk from adding in the 'buddy' address automatically?

  I am having this problem in ubuntu 12.04, but I fin strange that when I go to /tmp it wont allow me to delete some files, with message "Operation not permitted" or "this file could not be handled because you dont have permissions to read it". It is only a PC and I have the root password. I was trying to get at least 2000 MB of free space on the root file system to upgrade to 12.10 and see if that resolved the problem. Currently free space on root file system is 190 MB. • Connecting via ShrewSoft VPN client means no LAN internet access (Windows 7 64 bit) - any advice please?

  I have a Windows 7 64 bit desktop machine which is connected to a LAN. I recently installed ShrewSoft VPN client v 2.1.7 on my machine so that I can connect to a license server hosted by my customer. They are running a Cisco VPN server and I originally tried (unsuccessfully!) to use the Cisco VPN client for Windows 64 bit but the default gateway wasn't being configured correctly after loading in my pcf file. Using ShrewSoft I am able to import the same pcf file, and successfully connect to the machine I need to using the VPN client software. The client machine I need to connect to has IP address 1.52.90.33. The problem is that when I am connected to the customer network using the VPN client application (and after a few minutes) I lose my LAN internet connection. I can only presume that this is because, by default the ShrewSoft VPN client application automatically tunnels all traffic through the VPN connection. I know there is an option to switch off the "Tunnel All" option on the Policy tab of the application and enter a Remote Network Resource (to "Include" or "Exclude") as "Address" and "Netmask" IP addresses however I am not sure what I need to enter here. • Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver for Radeon HD 6290?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with (or something similar) AMD Radeon HD 6290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8...   Video card is: AMD HD 6950 My video card comes with 1xHDMI, 2xDVI, and 2xMini DV ports. I have always used VGA and DVI only. I have the HDMI already connected. I want to hook up 2 more display. One of the display can take a VGA only, the other is an LCD TV so it has VGA, HDMI, Component. I am wondering: 1) What is the best output port to use for the second two monitors? • Web application interacts bi-directional with server program?

  I want to write a web application to play chess against the engine Crafty. I'm not new to PHP and javascript, but must learn how to interact with a server process : how can a web application and/or (jQuery) ajax interact bi-directionally with a (linux) program running on the server? At this moment i am developing on (Apache) local host. Crafty is installed on my Ubuntu PC. This well-known chess engine has no GUI, it runs in terminal by the command $ /usr/games/crafty and so you can play chess against it and even see it's calculations. I can make Crafty run by PHP, using the functions proc_open() or exec(), and most documentation i found states that the output stream should be a file .. But i think i don't want such setup, because then the webpage should be constanty polling that file (eg. by ajax) to see if some new data was appended, right? How can Crafty talk to the web page directly, saying "i have calculated another variation" or "i have decided a move" etc, then display this info on the web page and let the user give some counter move, just like in terminal. Isn't it possible to use some session / stream / listener? I have no clue at all, can anybody point me in a right direction?

• IIS not using available memory?

  Recently launched an ASP.NET site running on a single 32-bit WS2003 box (SQL on a separate server). The server has 4GB intalled, 3GB available. According to task manager, the w3wp.exe process is only using between 200-600MB. The site has tens of thousands of pages and makes heavy use of page output caching, so I would expect it to use a lot more of the available memory. The app pool isn't set to throttle memory usage. Is there anything else that might be limiting the amount of memory that IIS takes?

• How can I get my monitor's maximum resolution without the proprietary AMD graphic driver installed?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have an AMD Radeon 5570 HD graphic card. Actually, the default open source REDWOOD drivers aren't allowing me to choose my monitor's maximum screen resolution(which is 1366 x 768). I just have two resolutions displayed which are 1024x768 and 800x600 . If I give the command : xrandr -s 1366x768 then the output is: Size 1366x768 not found in available modes So just for the sake of getting 1366x768 resolution I am forced to install the proprietary graphic driver that AMD gives me from its site. But if I install it(which itself is quite a problem-prone process), I undergo a lot of 'inconvenience'. Sometimes after an OS update, the driver crashes unity. Then I will have to uninstall that driver from a tty and google around for a solution. Also I encounter screen tearing problems occasionally. In addition I also cant see my login screen(See this question which states this particular problem). The main problem is AMD does not update its driver as quick as Ubuntu updates its OS. This is quite irritating. So, I want the maximum resolution(and performance) that my graphics card and monitor can give me without installing the 'problematic' proprietary graphic card driver that AMD gives. Is this possible? Suggestions please. Thanks in advance.   Hello, I'm using SQLite to store some data. The primary database is on a NAS (Debian Lenny, 2.6.15, armv4l) since the NAS runs a script which updates the data every day. A typical "select * from tableX" looks like this: 2010-12-28|20|62.09|25170.0 2010-12-28|21|49.28|23305.7 2010-12-28|22|48.51|22051.1 2010-12-28|23|47.17|21809.9 When I copy the DB to my main computer (Mac OS X) and run the same SQL query, the output is: 2010-12-28|20|1.08115035175016e-160|25170.0 2010-12-28|21|2.39343503830763e-259|-9.25596535779558e+61 2010-12-28|22|-1.02951149572792e-86|1.90359837597183e+185 2010-12-28|23|-1.10707273937033e-234|-2.35343828462275e-185 The 3rd and 4th column have the type REAL. Interesting fact: When the numbers are integer (i.e. they end with ".0"), there is no difference between the two databases. In all other cases, the differences are ... hm ... surprising? I can't seem to find a pattern. If someone's got a clue - please share!

  Hello, Happy to start contributing to this blog..  The title of the blog is probably deceptively simple and warrants an elaboration. Customized BPM workspaces/user interfaces are a fairly common requirement. One of our marquee customers in the online stock trading business, envisioned this user interaction for their BPM application: User logs in to the internal portal Use will have list of roles which he is granted as a drop down list Once user selects the role, a list of processes which user is part of appear. Logged in user can be part of any swimlane role of the process This can be a fairly common/reasonable user-UI interaction pattern. 1. and 2. are easily achievable and hence the subject matter of this blog is the requirement in 3. Objective: Given a username and a role, list all the BPM processes that the user is part of, in any swimlane of any process. Here is quick overview of the major steps/logic in the code: Intialize workflow/BPM  context as usual Get a handle on InstanceQueryService(getInstanceQueryService), InstanceManagementService,        ProcessMetadataService and ProcessModelService List all Processes for that bpmcontext (listProcessMetadataSumary) and get Granted roles to that user For each of the processes [method  getAccessibleProcesss(ProcessMetadataSummary, Set)]for each of the lanes in the process, check if the role granted to the user, matches the roleName for that swimlane. If so, add to output. Notes: The usual caveats apply including BPM APIs are subject to change.  JDeveloper method introspection is your better friend than API documentation :-)...   My Ubuntu eats more memory than the task manager is showing: sudo ps -e --format rss | awk 'BEGIN{c=0} {c+=$1} END{print c/1024}' 1043.84 free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3860 1878 1982 0 20 679 -/+ buffers/cache: 1178 2681 Swap: 2729 1035 1693 That's strange. Can someone explain this difference? But what is more important: I'd like to know how much memory a process is really using. I don't want to know the virtual memory size, but rather the resident memory plus swap of a process. I have also tried to output the format param "sz" of 'ps', but the sum of this is to high (5450 MB) (param 'size' gives 8323.45 MB). Are there any other options? I really want to use this, to determine which programs/processes are eating to much memory (and swap), to kill them, because hibernate might not be working if the swap partition is to little.

• Ubuntu 9.10 freezes when HDMI port is connected

  Hi, I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. I've tried two approaches: Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing. Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes. In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button. I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI. I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result. Any hints?

• Granting access to authzTo attribute

  I'm trying to grant certain accounts auth access to their authzTo attribute in order to allow proxied authorization. I tried adding this ldif: dn: olcDatabase={-1}frontend,cn=config changetype: modify add: olcAccess olcAccess: {1}to authzTo by dn.children="ou=Special Accounts,dc=example,dc=com" auth - using the command ldapadd -f perm.ldif -D "cn=admin,cn=config" -W but got this error: modifying entry "olcDatabase={-1}frontend,cn=config" ldap_modify: Other (e.g., implementation specific) error (80) additional info: <olcAccess> handler exited with 1 using verbose output and turning up the debug level haven't given me any more clues. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong?

• Two domains hosted on the same server with different root folder shows up the same homepage

  I have hosted two domains from GoDaddy at Linode VPS. They are mobiletoast.com and lesseltechnologies.com Thought the latter site has a separate index folder, whenever I navigate to it, I get the homepage of mobiletoast.com The strange thing is, I see the expected page (It works), when I open the site from my mobile phone. But when I open the site from my PC (any browser, without any cache, hard refresh), I get the homepage of mobiletoast.com The Linode support team says, they see the correct "It works" page. But I am not able to see that page. • nslookup gives wrong ip for my domain

  I am having some problem in trying to setup DNS for my domain on my server. This tutorial normally works fine for me but when i tried to lookup my domain it gives the following output Server: 4.2.2.1 Address: 4.2.2.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: 119.100.79.64.in-addr.arpa name = server.leech4ever.com.
