• Quick backup system for large projects

  I've always backed up all my source codes into .zip files and put it in my usb drive and uploaded to my server somewhere else in the world.. however I only do this once every two weeks, because my project is a little big. Right now my project directories (I have a few of them) contains a hierarchy of c++ files in it, and interspersed with them are .o files which would make backing up take a while if not ignored. What tools exist out there that will let me just back things up efficiently, conveniently and lets me specify which file types to back up (lots of .png, .jpg and some text types in there), and which directories to be ignored (esp. the build dirs)? Or is there any ingenious methods out there that people use?

• How to set timeout with python-mechanize?

  I'm using python-mechanize to scrape some web sites, which sometime simply don't respond to requests and these requests stay open too long, so I need to limit timeout for these requests. While using urlopen method, the timeout can be set using timeout parameter, but I have not found easy way for doing it with high level API such as submit or click methods. Ideally the timeout would be set just once for whole browser class and all calls would honor that. It would be probably possible to customize this by passing custom request_class to every click and submit call, but this would just pollute the code, so I'm looking for nicer solution for setting timeout for mechanize's browser class (and no, I don't want to change default socket timeout using socket.setdefaulttimeout).

For the same, I am fetching three list using the following three method. In the following code, UpdateCountHelper is fetching the data from database. So, UpdateCountHelper is taking some time for fetching data. • ASP.NET MVC authorization & permission to use model classes

  Hi, This is my first post here, so hello :) Okey, let's get to the point... I am writing my first app in ASP.NET MVC Framework and i have a problem with checking privileges to use instances of model classes (read, edit). Sample code looks like this: // Controller action [CustomAuthorize(Roles="Editor, Admin")] public ActionResult Stats(int id) { User user = userRepository.GetUser(id); if (user == null || !user.Activated || user.Removed) return View("NotFound"); else if (!user.IsCurrentSessionUserOwned) return View("NotAuthorized"); return View(user); } So far authorize attribute protects only controller actions, so my question is: how to make (custom) authorize attribute to check not only user role, usernames but also did i.e. resources instantiated in action methods (above: User class, but there are other ORM objects like News, Photos etc.) All of these object to check have their unique ID's, so user have own ID, News have their ID and UserID field referecned to Users table (i mean these objects are LINQ2SQL classes). How should i resolve that problem?

• How return 304 status with FileResult in ASP.NET MVC RC1

  As you may know we have got a new ActionResult called FileResult in RC1 version of ASP.NET MVC. Using that, your action methods can return image to browser dynamically. Something like this: public ActionResult DisplayPhoto(int id) { Photo photo = GetPhotoFromDatabase(id); return File(photo.Content, photo.ContentType); } In the HTML code, we can use something like this: <img src="http://mysite.com/controller/DisplayPhoto/657"> Since the image is returned dynamically, we need a way to cache the returned stream so that we don't need to read the image again from database. I guess we can do it with something like this, I'm not sure: Response.StatusCode = 304; This tells the browser that you already have the image in your cache. I just don't know what to return in my action method after setting StatusCode to 304. Should I return null or something?

• Logging with log4j on tomcat jruby-rack for a Rails 3 application

  I just spent the better part of 3 hours trying to get my Rails application logging with Log4j. I've finally got it working, but I'm not sure if what I did is correct. I tried various methods to no avail until my various last attempt. So I'm really looking for some validation here, perhaps some pointers and tips as well -- anything would be appreciated to be honest. I've summarized all my feeble methods into three attempts below. I'm hoping for some enlightenment on where I went wrong with each attempt -- even if it means I get ripped up. Thanks for the help in advance! System Specs Rails 3.0 Windows Server 2008 Log4j 1.2 Tomact 6.0.29 Java 6 Attempt 1 - Configured Tomcat to Use Log4J I basically followed the guide on the Apache Tomcat website here. The steps are: Create a log4j.properties file in $CATALINA_HOME/lib Download and copy the log4j-x.y.z.jar into $CATALINA_HOME/lib Replace $CATALINA_HOME/bin/tomcat-juli.jar with the tomcat-juli.jar from the Apache Tomcat Extras folder Copy tomcat-juli-adapters.jar from the Apache Tomcat Extras folder into $CATALINA_HOME/lib Delete $CATALINA_BASE/conf/logging.properties Start Tomcat (as a service) Expected Results According to the Guide I should have seen a tomcat.log file in my $CATALINA_BASE/logs folder. Actual Results No tomcat.log Saw three of the standard logs instead jakarta_service_20101231.log stderr_20101231.log stdout_20101231.log Question Shouldn't I have at least seen a tomcat.log file? Copied the log4j.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder Created a log4j.properties file and put it into WEB-INF/classes log4j.rootLogger=INFO, R log4j.logger.javax.servlet=DEBUG log4j.appender.R=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.R.File=${catalina.base}/logs/rails3.log log4j.appender.R.MaxFileSize=5036KB log4j.appender.R.MaxBackupIndex=4 log4j.appender.R.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.R.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{dd MMM yyyy HH:mm:ss} [%t] %-5p %c %x - %m%n Restarted Tomcat Results Same as Attempt 2 NOTE: I used log4j.logger.javax.servlet=DEBUG because I read in the jruby-rack README that all logging output is automatically redirected to the javax.servlet.ServletContext#log method. So I though this would capture it. I was obviously wrong. Question Why didn't this work? Isn't Log4J using the commons_logging API? Attempt 3 - Tried out slf4j (WORKED) A bit uncertain as to why Attempt 2A didn't work, I thought to myself, maybe I can't use commons_logging for the jruby.rack.logging parameter because it's probably not using commons_logging API... (but I was still not sure). I saw slf4j as an option. I have never heard of it and by stroke of luck, I decided to look up what it is. After reading briefly about what it does, I thought it was good of a shot as any and decided to try it out following the instructions here. Continuing from the setup of Attempt 2A: Copied slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar and slf4j-simple-1.6.1.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder I also copied slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder Restarted Tomcat And VIOLA! I now have logging information going into my rails3.log file. So the big question is: WTF? Even though logging seems to be working now, I'm really not sure if I did this right. So like I said earlier, I'm really looking for some validation more or less. I'd also appreciate any pointers/tips/advice if you have any. Thanks!

• Converting app to MVC and running it in both console and gui

  I have a simple java gui calculator, with 3 number systems (there are some bugs but that doesn't matter now). Currently all code is in one file. My task is to rewrite it as MVC, and add possibility to run it in either gui or console mode. How should I divide this program to organise it as M-V-C ? Is it written properly enough to add console functionality to it? (guess I'll have to change all methods invoking to JLabel Output to something simply storing an output String as a model argument and then having View to get it). • UI Controls layer on top of operating system.

  I'm kind of curious about what layer writing a UI platform to the level of Win32 or the X Windowing System would fall in the grand scheme of an operating system. What layers below do they primarily make use of, is it heavily based on direct communication with the graphics card driver (I can't imagine going though a rendering pipeline like OpenGL for this), or is there a graphical platform as part of the operating system which extracts this out a little more. I'm also interested in the creation of shells and the like, and I"m particularly curious as to how people go about creating alternative shells for windows, what do people look for when figuring out what methods to call or what to hook into, etc? I guess I'm fairly lost at these concepts and finding it difficult to find documentation on them. I was initially excited to have taken Operating Systems in college but it was all low level resource management stuff. Thanks all, Mason

• Edit Distance in Python

  I'm programming a spellcheck program in Python. I have a list of valid words (the dictionary) and I need to output a list of words from this dictionary that have an edit distance of 2 from a given invalid word. I know I need to start by generating a list with an edit distance of one from the invalid word(and then run that again on all the generated words). I have three methods, inserts(...), deletions(...) and changes(...) that should output a list of words with an edit distance of 1, where inserts outputs all valid words with one more letter than the given word, deletions outputs all valid words with one less letter, and changes outputs all valid words with one different letter. I've checked a bunch of places but I can't seem to find an algorithm that describes this process. All the ideas I've come up with involve looping through the dictionary list multiple times, which would be extremely time consuming. If anyone could offer some insight, I'd be extremely grateful. • Is it possible to set properties on a Mock Object in Simpletest

  I normally use getter and setter methods on my objects and I am fine with testing them as mock objects in SimpleTest by manipulating them with code like: Mock::generate('MyObj'); $MockMyObj->setReturnValue('getPropName', 'value') However, I have recently started to use magic interceptors (__set() __get()) and access properties like so: $MyObj->propName = 'blah'; But I am having difficulty making a mock object have a particular property accessed by using that technique. So is there some special way of setting properties on MockObjects. I have tried doing: $MockMyObj->propName = 'test Value'; but this does not seem to work. Not sure if it is my test Subject, Mock, magic Interceptors, or SimpleTest that is causing the property to be unaccessable. Any advice welcome.

• Searching Techniques/Algorithms for Resources over a given area

I need techniques which are able to take a starting point, move in a certain way (the algorithm), find nodes and continue searching. I do not have an overall view of the surface (i.e. I cannot see everything), only a limited view (i.e. 4 cells in any direction). Ideally, these methods would be efficient in the way that they work. Any points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

• improving conversions to binary and back in C#

  I'm trying to write a general purpose socket server for a game I'm working on. I know I could very well use already built servers like SmartFox and Photon, but I wan't to go through the pain of creating one myself for learning purposes. I've come up with a BSON inspired protocol to convert the the basic data types, their arrays, and a special GSObject to binary and arrange them in a way so that it can be put back together into object form on the client end. At the core, the conversion methods utilize the .Net BitConverter class to convert the basic data types to binary. Anyways, the problem is performance, if I loop 50,000 times and convert my GSObject to binary each time it takes about 5500ms (the resulting byte[] is just 192 bytes per conversion). I think think this would be way too slow for an MMO that sends 5-10 position updates per second with a 1000 concurrent users. Yes, I know it's unlikely that a game will have a 1000 users on at the same time, but like I said earlier this is supposed to be a learning process for me, I want to go out of my way and build something that scales well and can handle at least a few thousand users. So yea, if anyone's aware of other conversion techniques or sees where I'm loosing performance I would appreciate the help. GSBitConverter.cs This is the main conversion class, it adds extension methods to main datatypes to convert to the binary format. It uses the BitConverter class to convert the base types.   GWT's RPC mechanism does the following things on every HTTP Request - Sets two custom request headers - X-GWT-Permutation and X-GWT-Module-Base Sets the content-type as text/x-gwt-rpc; charset=utf-8 The HTTP request is always a POST, and on server side GET methods throw an exception (method not supported). Also, if these headers are not set or have the wrong value, the server fails processing with an exception "possibly CSRF?" or something to that effect. Question is : Is this sufficient to prevent CSRF? Is there a way to set custom headers and change content type in a pure cross-site request forgery method?

In step 1 i got a listbox bound to my viewmodel, but now i want to propagate a click in a button and a selecteditemchanged of the listbox back to the viewmodel. I guess i have to bind the click event of the button and the selecteditemchanged of the listbox to 2 methods in my viewmodel somehow? For the selecteditemchanged of the listbox i think there must also be a 'return call' possible when the viewmodel tries to set the selecteditem to another value? i come from a asp.net (mvc) background, but can't figure out how to do it in silverlight.

  I have a db, that stores dates in OleDateTime format, in GMT timezone. I've implemented a class, extending Date in java to represent that in classic date format. But my class is locale-dependent (I'm in GMT+2). Therefore, it converts the date in the db as date - 2 hours. How do I make it convert the date correctly? I want my class to be locale-independent, always using GMT timezone. • XCode Syntax Coloring Broken

  XCode frequently seems to lose it's mind, and doesn't color code system classes or provide correct "code sense" suggestions. This is endlessly frustrating. I have rebuilt the code sense indexes and completely restarted XCode with no change. I have built my project to make sure there are no errors and restarted. I have copied my files (sans .svn files) to a different location - same problem. I've already completely disabled the argument "placeholders" because they screw up my documents when i type too fast... all I'm asking for is for the "esc" key to display the correct list of properties and methods.

• Use of COM object in IIS 7

  Hi all, I am currently moving an ASP.NET web-project from an IIS 6 to a IIS 7 hosting environment. Everything seems to be running OK, except my calls to a COM object. I can perfectly instantiate an object of the COM type, but when I call one of its methods, the IIS crashes. The event log reports an error code "0xc0000374", which indicates a heap corruption. When I run the application inside the visual studio development server, everything goes well and the COM object code gets executed without any errors. This is also the case when the application is hosted on an IIS 6 machine. I have looked through all settings of the IIS 7 and have not found anything configurable for COM objects, like security or ... I have been struggling with this for a while and I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have any experience deploying COM objects on IIS 7? Your help would be very appreciated!

• Cloning java ArrayList and preventing it from modifications

  I have a data structure like a database Rowset, which has got Rows and Rows have Columns. I need to initialize a Columns with null values, current code is to loop thru each column for a row and initialize values to NULL. Which is very inefficient if you have 100s or rows and 10s of column. So instead I am keeping a initialized ArrayList of columns are RowSet level, and then doing a clone of this Arraylist for individual rows, as I believe clone() is faster than looping thru each element. row.columnsValues = rowsset.NullArrayList.clone() Problem with this is NullArrayList can be accidentally modified after being cloned, thus sacrificing the integrity of ArrayList at RowSet level, to prevent I am doing 3 things 1) Delcaring ArrayList as final 2) Any elements I insert are final or null 3) Methods thurough this arrayList are passed to other arrays are declared a final. Sounds like a plan, do you see any holes ?

  I'm currently working on a website in PHP, and I'm wondering what the best practices/methods are to reduce the time requests take. I've build the site in a modular way, so a page would consist of a number of modules, and each of these would need to request information. For example, I have a cart module, that (if a cart is set) will fetch the cart with the id (stored in a session variable) from the database and return its contents. I have another module that lists categories and this needs to fetch the categories from the database. My system is built with models, and each model might also make a request, for example a category model will make a request to get products in that category.

  I have an abstract Java class MyAbstractClass with a private method. There is a concrete implementation MyConcreteClass. public class MyAbstractClass { private void somePrivateMethod(); } public class MyConcreteClass extends MyAbstractClass { // implementation details } In my groovy test class I have class MyAbstractClassTest { void myTestMethod() { MyAbstractClass mac = new MyConcreteClass() mac.somePrivateMethod() } } I get an error that there is no such method signature for somePrivateMethod. I know groovy can call private methods but I'm guessing the problem is that the private method is in the super class, not MyConcreteClass. Is there a way to invoke a private method in the super class like this (other than using something like PrivateAccessor)? thanks Jeff
