  I do this in a script: read direc <<< $(basename `pwd`) and I get: Syntax error: redirection unexpected in an ubuntu machine /bin/bash --version GNU bash, version 4.0.33(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) while I do not get this error in another suse machine: /bin/bash --version GNU bash, version 3.2.39(1)-release (x86_64-suse-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc. • Real Time LaTeX?

  I'm looking for an application in which I can write pure LaTeX in one half of the screen and on the other half to see the compiled document in real time. This seems really like an obvious way to do LaTeX authoring but it doesn't look like any software is able to do it. LyX is not what I'm looking for. I want to edit the actual LaTeX and see it rendered in real time. Why isn't this already being done somewhere?

  I have to develop a specialised report editor in Java. The user will get a number of fields that can be layed out on a page plus some graphical elements. The resulting report design needs to be serialized into already defined database tables. Is there any software library that will help to achieve this without reinventing the wheel? I have come across Eclipse GEF and Zest, but I am not sure if this really meets my problem.

• How to determine if a machine is running Active Directory

  I would like to know from Java code if the machine that I'm on is running active directory or that it has active directory installed (e.g. service may be stopped). Is there a reliable registry key to inspect? This is specifically for Windows 2008. I found info on the web that mentions HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC\Security\DomainControllerState, but that value is 0 on my domain controller as well as on my normal windows 7 machine!?

  With Microsoft Ultimate Wisdom they have changed the location of updates from Registry. I can get the updates from Windows 2003 Servers no problem. Its just that Windows 7 is no longer in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall Any body got any other ways to get it. Preferably in C# or using WMI?
