• How can I set a default sort for tables in PHPMyAdmin (i.e. always "Primary key - Descending")

  Even though its obnoxious in a lot of ways I use PHPMyAdmin all the time to debug database issues while writing PHP. By default it sorts tables by primary key ascending. 99% of the time I would rather have the newest data (my test data) shown at the top by default rather than the useless first few records ever saved. Is there a way to configure PHPMyAdmin to show the newest records by default? To alter similar behavior?

  I've committed myself to diving into vim to become faster at writing code for ruby/python and I'm having a hard time navigating around files. Mainly, I'm referring to switching between insert mode and navigation modes. Maybe I'm just not completely used to the editor yet but it feels very awkward to constantly be switching in and out of insert mode. Is this something that will go away with time? Are there any tricks to getting quicker at moving in and out of insert mode?

  As I know that accessing an element in vector takes constant time while in map takes logarithmic time. However, storing a map takes less memory than storing a vector. Therefore, I want to ask which one is better in general? I'm considering using one of those two in my program, which has about 1000 elements.   We are using bcrypt for passwords and data that never needs to be decrypted. What should do to protect other user information that does. For this example lets say that we didn't want a users real name to be in plain text in case someone was to obtain the db. This is somewhat sensitive data but also needs to be called from time to time and displayed in plain text. Is there a simple way to do this?

• Mac OS X: getting file system changes of the last minute?

  From older times (Mac OS 10.4) I had found this command line on the web somewhere: mdfind '(kMDItemFSContentChangeDate >= $time.now(-60)) && (kMDItemFSContentChangeDate <= $time.now)' it gave me a list of files that where changed in the last minute. This does not work anymore on Mac OS 10.6. Can anybody explain why this doesn't work? And even suggest a working command line?

• "blkclr (mach_kernel)" shows up in mac's shark profiler. What does it do?

  I am profiling a C program using Mac's Shark which shows that some of CPU time goes to "blkclr" in "mach_kernel". What does this kernel function do? I speculate it is related to memory allocation, but I am not sure. I have googled for some time, but could not find the answer, either. Does someone know this? Thanks in advance.

  Basic question, sorry. Basically, I have a script that creates a MySQL entry each time someone visits the page. A logging script. However, I want to make it autoprune after, say, 100 visits. For example in pseudo code: if amount of rows > 100 { delete rows 1+ until amount of rows == 100 } So in a nutshell, each time a new row is added after 100, it needs to automatically remove the row with the smallest id (My primary key).

• Database is very slow when creating an index

  My database has around 25 core numbers, in that weekly basis I need to create an index and drop index. While creating the index it takes long time to complete, my log file also keeps on increasing, and when I delete some numbers from that table also taking too much time (because weekly basis I have to delete 30 to 50 lack numbers and add 30 to 40 lack new number also). • Prevent web2py from caching ?

  Hi ! I'm working with web2py and for some reason web2py seems to fail to notice when code has changed in certain cases. I can't really narrow it down, but from time to time changes in the code are not reflected, web2py obviously has the old version cached somewhere. The only thing that helps is quitting web2py and restarting it (i'm using the internal server). Any hints ? Thank you !
