When an application uses the internet or even a remote network location, does this count towards the bandwidth quota of my ISP? What if the machine is virtual?
Thanks
I can not access Contol panel in my windows vista machine.
As soon as i click the "conrol panel" item in start items, it shows up a window and then its closed automatically ( same happens if i use "control" command).
Is there some program or some registry entry thats restricting it? is ther a way to control this behaviour?
I have an HTTP service bound to port 8000 that I want to access from another computing on the network, but I can't seem to connect using the external IP address of the machine (e.g. 192.168.0.105). I've checked the OS X firewall isn't running, so I'm assuming the issue is the service is only bound to the IP address 127.0.0.1, and not the external IP address.
What would be the easiest way to temporarily forward external connections on port 8000 to 127.0.0.1:8000?
I was considering deploying my web application on a Debian virtual machine. However, I want to lock it down as tight as possible (i.e. traffic in/out). I was wondering which, if any, port I needed to leave open to allow for updates.
I would like to use an alias for a remote host. For example, when instead of "ping giraffe.foo.bar.com" I want to do "ping giraffe", but only when I do it from my own machine. I am able to do this for raw IP addresses by adding an entry in /etc/hosts (ie "123.456.1.0 giraffe"), but it does not seem to work for host names.
I suppose that my main Linux user account password serves as my SSH password as well. Is there a way I can modify this? As it turns out, I'd like to have a REALLY secure SSH password for obvious reasons, but a less secure local password, as it makes typing in passwords a heck of a lot easier on a machine. Is there a way I can change my account password in SSH without changing my Linux user password?
I can't connect to the instance of exchange server 2010 through EMC on the local machine running w2k8 r2. I've checked all the default website bindings, the kerberos auth and WSMan are set to native type in powershell and I still get this error message.
Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message:
The WS-Management service does not
support the request.
It was running the command 'Discover-ExchangeServer -UseWIA $true -suppresserror $true'
Have a system with Win8 within Domain A and remote has been enabled in that. Users from Domain A are able to login reomtely using admin credentials. how ever using the same credentials users from Domain B Domain C & Domain D are not able to login. Is there any setting that needs to be done so that users from other 3 domains are able to access the system either using the system admin account or using their login (added in remote desktop users account in the remote machine)
Any suggestion will be helpful
I want to set up BIND for a private subdomain on a private network, like in the question here: How to configure bind for a private subdomain?
My question is this - should my (linux) router act as the DNS server for this? Or should I have a seperate machine on the network acting as the DNS server? Does it not matter as long as all the machines on the network are configured to resolve to the internal DNS server?
I can't seem to install Visual Studio .NET on my Windows 7 machine (64 bit). Do I need Visual Studio 2008 to install?
I'm also looking for a good ASP.NET editor (which supports Intellisense), any recommendations?

I have a gateway NV74 with AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) on Ubuntu 9.10. Wireless doesn't work that well, the connection is bad, and system disconnects itself often. Also, sometimes the machine crashes, and I have to reboot the computer. Any idea please? Thanks
I have a basic NAS device (Buffallo LinkStation Duo) that can only present SMB fileshares to the network. For testing annd for getting a dying physical machine working I would like to store my VMDK on here. Is that possible, or will I have to find some way of presenting this as an iSCSI target of some sort?
I've only used iSCSI or local storage in the past, but this isn't possible at the moment.
Thanks.
Is there a way to watch Linux boot as though it was a program compiled with GCC on a Linux environment using the -g switch so, say, I can step through the entire boot sequence from GRUB onwards, choosing to step through at C source level or assembly when necessary/desirable, by using GDB or a GDB-like tool?
I suspect it would require a virtual machine at least, to watch the boot on a host environment. Any elaboration on this topic of observing a boot would be appreciated!

I'm trying to understand how and if it is possible to list the installed applications of Windows clients via Microsoft SMS (System Management Server). What I can find it's only VB script snippet code to get the installed applications onto the client machine, but I don't know how SMS could aggregate these data.
Could anyone give me an indication or link?
I really want to run MCollective on my fleet of servers however there are a large number of untrusted users on each machine which makes using MCollective not ideal in my eyes. I'm aware that there is some things you can do to take precaution but I'm not familiar enough with ActiveMQ / want something that's a bit more mindful of similar environments to mine outside the box.
I'm looking for a fact collection like tool essentially.
(Tagging under puppet / server since no mcollective tag and I don't have enough reputation to create a new one)
This domain uses roaming profiles for these specific users. I want to have files in the profile of every profile created. On a regular machine, I would put it in the All users directory. I can’t do that here because it is a roaming profile. Thoughts?
When I first learned how to make ssh keys, the tutorials I read all stated that a good passphrase should be chosen. But recently, when setting up a daemon process that needs to ssh to another machine, I discovered that the only way (it seems) to have a key that I don't need to auth at every boot is to create a key with an empty passphrase. So my question is, what are the concerns with using a key with no passphrase?
Hi,
I've a Virtual Private Server with Windows 2003 and root access. This server mainly acts as a web hosting machine (IIS, Apache). Additionally it is used as a mail server.
Is it possible to isolate a mailserver (for example HMailServer) by using VMware Server on Windows 2003 in order to avoid potential viruses moving from the guest into the host system?
Is this is a good direction to protect the web server from viruses?
Kind regards,
Jakub
After updating to 10.6.4 spotlight suddenly stopped working in terms of constantly crashing..

Since it is also related to network configuration. I posted it here.
Hi I had trouble but I finally port forwarded 21-23 and thus got SSH working on my Ubuntu machine.
If I want to do other things with it such as FTP, should I just port forward 1-10000 so I don't have to worry about port forwarding each individual port? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this?
