  • Why are so many new languages written for the Java VM?

    There are more and more programming languages (Scala, Clojure,...) coming out that are made for the Java VM and are therefore compatible with the Java Byte-Code. I'm beginning to ask myself: Why the Java VM? What makes it so powerful or popular that there are new programming languages, which seem gaining popularity too, created for it? Why don't they write a new VM for a new language?

  • Fun programming languages

    What are some fun programming languages to learn and work with? I'm asking this for absolutely no practical purpose other than just to learn something new. So, what are some fun languages? I already know Python and C# so those don't count (although Python would probably be the first language I'd recommend). I've spent some time with Ruby, but I don't really see anything that's a whole lot different from Python. (and no, I'm not going to learn Intercal or Brainf*ck before you mention it)

  • How to read using C++ (C#) sound stream sent by flash?

    Hello. I need to read sound stream sent by flash audio in my C++ application (C++ is not a real limitation, it may be C# or any other desktop language). I am looking for this mainly for performance tweaking and hoping there is a readymade project rather than building from scratch. Features I am looking for include: Combines multiple .css files into a single css file Optionally minifies the resulting .css file Works well with .Net (a user control, custom handler, etc) Is there a project out that that handles this?

  • Using the MongoDB Ruby driver in Rails? (without an object mapper)

    I have recently been getting my feet wet in MongoDB using Mongoid w/ Rails 3, but I'm now interested in learning the low level MongoDB features using only the Ruby driver, and trying some map/reduce that would not be possible through Mongoid (afaik) I'm not entirely sure where in Rails I should be setting up the db connections etc, and any pointers would be much appreciated!

  • Is it possible to use multiple languages in .NET resource files?

    We’ve got an interesting requirement that we’ll want to support multiple languages at runtime since we’re a service. If a user talks to us using Japanese or English, we’ll want to respond in the appropriate language. FxCop likes us to store our strings in resource files, but I was curious to know if there was an integrated way to select resource string at runtime without having to do it manually. Bottom Line: We need to be able to support multiple languages in a single binary. :)

  • Can an algorithmic process ever give true random numbers ?

    I have worked with random functions in python,ruby, MATLAB, Bash and Java. Nearly every programming language has a function to generate Random numbers. However, these apparently random sequences are termed as pseudo-random number sequences as the generation follows a deterministic approach, and the sequence seems to repeat (usually with a very large period). My question, can an algorithmic/programming process ever yield true random numbers ? The questions probably is more of theoretical computer science than just programming !

My biggest problem is reading the MIDI data in from a file, and I'd like to avoid writing all the import code.   • Why should I be using testing frameworks in PHP?

    Hi everyone, I have recently heard a lot of people argue about using PHP testing features like PHPunit and SimpleTest together with their IDE of choice (Eclipse for me). After googling the subject, I have still a hard time understanding the pros and cons of using these testing frameworks to speed up development.
