  I would like to understand database scalability so I've just heard a talk about Habits of Highly Scalable Web Applications http://techportal.ibuildings.com/2010/03/02/habits-of-highly-scalable-web-applications/ On it, the presenter mainly talk about relational database scalability. I also have read something about MapReduce and Column oriented tables, big tables, hypertable etc... trying to understand which are the most up to date methods to scale web application data. But the second group, to me, is being hard to understand where it fits. It serves as transactional, reliable data store? or not, its just for large access and processing and to handle fine graned operations we will ever need to rely on RDBMSs? Could someone give a comprehensive landscape for those new technologies and how to use it?

• Updating Excel Cell with Non-Numeric Data in C#

  I have a query that is ExcelQuery = "Update [Sheet1$] set CITIZEN_ID = #" + value + " where CITIZEN_ID = " + value; As you can see, I'm essentially just appending a "#" onto the CITIZEN_ID field. value is a int/numeric value. So if I had "256" in the CITIZEN_ID column it would be converted to "#256" When I execute this I get an OleDbException Syntax error in date in query expression so I surrounded part of the query in single quotes like this, ExcelQuery = "Update [Sheet1$] set CITIZEN_ID = '#" + value + "' where CITIZEN_ID = " + value; With that I get yet another OleDbException this time with, Data type mismatch in criteria expression. I'm guessing for some reason the CITIZEN_ID fields don't want to take anything besides a plain number. Is there any way I can remedy this to get that pound symbol in? Thanks!

  I have three tables (user, friends, posts) and two users (user1 and user2). When user1 adds user2 as friend then user1 can see the posts of user2 just like on Facebook. But only the posts after the date when user1 added user2 as friend.   Im running a asp.net website on windows 2003 ii6. Every 24-28 hours im getting the following error: When the error occurres all users are disconnected from the website. Event Type: Warning Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1013 Date: 02/02/2010 Time: 19:29:38 User: N/A A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' exceeded time limits during shut down. Is this related to application pool recycle? if so , is it a must to recycle iis pool? thanks!

• How to allow users to select their own grouping for a .NET TreeView control

  I am using a treeview to display projects, tasks, time entries, and the people who are working on a project. I would like to allow the user to define a custom grouping (ie. Project->Task->Time Entries or Project->Date (of time entry)->Task->TimeEntry). The relevant groups would be Project, Task, Time Entry, and Person, with some metadata from them. I want to have some modular way to allow a user to specify how they would like to display the information. Does anyone know of a good method by which this can be done? I currently have hard-coded a display which looks like this: Project Task Time Entry Next Project ... My thought is to do something like write methods to display each type and somehow let a user select what order the display would group. Please let me know if I am not being clear enough.

  Hi guys, I recently bought some webspace with dailyrazor.com. I have deployed an application I have been working on to the server and am currently trying to workout the bugs but I can't seem to solve this one. I have set up my database in Visual Studio to use the one I have create with dailyrazor the same db the deployed version will use. I am using British Dates and on my localhost datetime is displayed: 27/05/2010 09:00 However on the dailyrazor host it is displayed: 5/27/2010 9:00 AM Short Dates e.g. 27/04/2010 display the same on both servers. This is causing some issues when entering data as errors occur on date fields. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon

  Hey there folks, Here is one that is throwing me for a loop. I am trying to set a simple cookie that has one name:value pair on IE8. Tested on FF and it works fine. IE8 keeps blocking it. • .Net Culture Insensitive Comparisons - Example of when this is needed

  I am revising for the MCTS example and am on a small section regarding Culture-Insensitive comparisons. I get the principle, you don't two items which are the same (i.e dates) but are displayed differently and hence are pragmatically marked as different. However call me stupid but I am finding it hard to see where I can use it is practice, for example why would you have two different date times, in the same code, in which they are different cultures? The only way to do so would be if you manually override the one of the datatypes cultures and why would you do that? Any example of a real-world application of culturally insensitive comparisons? • subversion merge back to trunk

  I set up a branch several weeks ago. When some changes were made to the trunk, SVN was committing to the branch, and not the trunk. The changes were minor and applicable to the branch anyway, so I assumed this is how the branch should work. Now that the branch work is finished, I merged back the branch back to my working trunk, assuming SVN would replace the old trunk with the new branch in the repository as well. That is not the case though. My repository trunk is out of date. I would like to make the repository trunk be same as the branch and then delete the branch. How can I do this? I'm developing some web log file analysis algorithms, but to date I only have access to a fairly small amount of web log data to process. One algorithm I want to use makes some assumptions about 'the shape' of typical web log data, and so I'd like to test it against a larger 'exemplar' - perhaps the logs of a busy site with a good distribution of traffic from different sources etc. Is there a set of such data available somewhere? • How can I force all internet traffic over a PPTP VPN but still allow local lan access?

  I have a server running Linux Mint 12 that I want to keep connected to a PPTP VPN all the time. The VPN server is pretty reliable, but it drops on occasion so I just want to make it so all internet activity is disabled if the VPN connection is broken. I'd also like to figure out a way to restart it automatically, but that's not as big of an issue since this happens pretty rarely. I also want to always be able to connect to the box from my lan, regardless of whether the VPN is up or not.   I've been looking for a simple key/license system for our users. Its partly to stop piracy (avoid users from sharing the application around) and the other half to track the number of 'licensed users' we have. I have already read a few good suggestions on SO but I'm curious as to how people have implemented the 30 day evaluation criteria. Do you generate a key that stores the date somewhere and do a comparison each time or is it a little more complicated - deleting the file/removing the registry shouldn't deactivate. Are there any example implementations out there that can give me a head start? The irony is that our PM doesn't want to license a third-party system to do it for us. This is for a Windows Forms application.

• Modifying NSDate to represent 1 month from today

  I'm adding repeating events to a Cocoa app I'm working on. I have repeat every day and week fine because I can define these mathematically (3600*24*7 = 1 week). I use the following code to modify the date: [NSDate dateWithTimeIntervalSinceNow:(3600*24*7*(weeks))] I know how many months have passed since the event was repeated but I can't figure out how to make an NSDate object that represents 1 month/3 months/6 months/9 months into the future. Ideally I want the user to say repeat monthly starting Oct. 14 and it will repeat the 14th of every month.

  I have seen several questions here on tracking db history, but can't seem to find one that matches our situation. We need to track the history of several tables, some of which are many-to-many linking tables. Eg say we have this schema: EntityA id name EntityB id name ABLink A_id B_id So, tracking changes to EntityA or EntityB seems pretty straightforward. We can keep a log table with the same columns plus a date stamp and user. But what about the links? How do we maintain the set of links that are valid for a given version of the data? We need to be able to recreate a history of the data showing changes in chronological order. So if a link added or deleted, we indicate that. Etc.
