• Read from one large file and write to many (tens, hundreds, or thousands) files in Java?

  I have a large-ish file (4-5 GB compressed) of small messages that I wish to parse into approximately 6,000 files by message type. Messages are small; anywhere from 5 to 50 bytes depending on the type. Each message starts with a fixed-size type field (a 6-byte key). If I read a message of type '000001', I want to write append its payload to 000001.dat, etc. The input file contains a mixture of messages; I want N homogeneous output files, where each output file contains only the messages of a given type. What's an efficient a fast way of writing these messages to so many individual files? I'd like to use as much memory and processing power to get it done as fast as possible. I can write compressed or uncompressed files to the disk. I'm thinking of using a hashmap with a message type key and an outputstream value, but I'm sure there's a better way to do it. Thanks!

• Reducing Time Complexity in Java

  Right, this is from an older exam which i'm using to prepare my own exam in january. Fairly sure it's O(n²), unless someone thinks otherwise? Can you reduce the time complexity, and if so, how? Well, you can.   I was searching for a way to insert an ellipsis in a C# path, and found an answer here on stackoverflow: http://tinyurl.com/y6rmdfr Using the RTM versions of VS2010 and .Net 4.0, I was unable to get the suggested method to work. I searched the 'Net and found example code that uses the same method, but it failed in the same way. You can see the string I'm trying to shorten in my code below. After calling the MeasureText method, both the input string (OriginalName) and the output string (ellipsisedName) look like this: d:\abcd\efgh\ijkl\mnop\qrst\...\test.txt\0F\GHIJ\KLMN\OPQR\STIV\WXYZ\test.txt Two problems: 1) The resulting string is narfed (the path is truncated as expected, but is followed by what looks like a C-style terminating null and a chunk of the original path). 2) My original string is changed to be identical to the output string. • php mysql parallel array checkboxes

  I have an array of checkboxes that I edit at once to set up a 'tinyint' field. the problem comes in when i uncheck the checkbox and post the vales to mysql. since it posts an array of checkboxes and another parallel array of values to edit, unchecking a checkbox results in the 0 value been ignored by PHP_POST and hence the checkbox array will be less by the number of unchecked values in the form while the array to be edited will have all the records in the form. here is the submit code while($row=mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $checked = ($row[active]==1) ? • Log 2 N generic comparison tree

  Hey! I'm working on an algorithm for Redundant Binary Representation (RBR) where every two bits represent a digit. I designed the comparator that takes 4 bits and gives out 2 bits. I want to make the comparison in log 2 n so If I have X and Y .. I compare every 2 bits of X with every 2 bits of Y. This is smooth if the number of bits of X or Y equals n where (n = 2^X) i.e n = 2,4,8,16,32,... etc. Like this : However, If my input let us say is 6 or 10 .. then it becomes not smooth and I have to take into account some odd situations like this : I have a shallow experience in algorithms .. is there a generic way to do it .. so at the end I get only 2 bits no matter what the input is ? I just need hints or pseudo-code. If my question is not appropriate here .. so feel free to flag it or tell me to remove it. I'm using VHDL by the way!

• Rspec Selenium. Test to check certain Ajax functions passes when i expect it to fail.

  I am testing a Ajax action using Rspec and Selenium. My story is as follows: it "should create a new User with any input" do @browser.open "/people" @browser.wait_for_page_to_load "2000" @browser.type "user_name", "Alok Swain" @browser.click "user_submit" @browser.text?("Alok Swain").should be_true end The action i am testing is: def add_user @users = User.all User.create(params[:user]) render :update do |page| page.alert "Created User" page.replace_html "users", :partial => '/people/users_list', :locals => {:users => @users} end end The test fails and the error I get is: 'User should create a new User with any input' FAILED expected false to be true. This test should pass right ? I also kept an alert and tried @browser.is_alert_present.should be_true but i got the same error. I tried @browser.is_text_present("test") and this test succeeded. In the test database a record was created for Alok Swain but when I tried the above assertion it passed when i expected it to fail. Is there any thing else to be done here. What am I missing ?

• Creating a smart text generator

  I'm doing this for fun (or as 4chan says "for teh lolz") and if I learn something on the way all the better. I took an AI course almost 2 years ago now and I really enjoyed it but I managed to forget everything so this is a way to refresh that. Anyway I want to be able to generate text given a set of inputs. Basically this will read forum inputs (or maybe Twitter tweets) and then generate a comment based on the learning. Now the simplest way would be to use a Markov Chain Text Generator but I want something a little bit more complex than that as the MKC basically only learns by word order (which word is more likely to appear after word x given the input text). I'm trying to see if there's something I can do to make it a little bit more smarter. For example I want it to do something like this: Learn from a large selection of posts in a message board but don't weight it too much For each post: Learn from the other comments in that post and weigh these inputs higher Generate comment and post See what other users' reaction to your post was. If good weigh it positively so you make more posts that are similar to the one made, and vice versa if negative. It's the weighing and learning from mistakes part that I'm not sure how to implement. I thought about Artificial Neural Networks (mainly because I remember enjoying that chapter) but as far as I can tell that's mainly used to classify things (i.e. given a finite set of choices [x1...xn] which x is this given input) not really generate anything. I'm not even sure if this is possible or if it is what should I go about learning/figuring out. What algorithm is best suited for this? To those worried that I will use this as a bot to spam or provide bad answers to SO, I promise that I will not use this to provide (bad) advice or to spam for profit. I definitely will not post it's nonsensical thoughts on SO. I plan to use it for my own amusement. Thanks!

  i'm trying to use the wave module to read wav files in python. whats not typical of my applications is that I'm NOT using a file or a filename to read the wav file, but instead i have the wav file in a buffer.   Every time a user registers to our site we need to show a non-disclosure agreement. In order to continue the user has to accept it. My issue is that I have the NDA in all one page and the user does not really read it and accept (like we all do). What I want is to make sure the user reads the NDA and accepts it one he "read" it? What I have now is a simple jqeury validation if the user checks a box and click on accept. then it goes to the next page. • JTextField vs JComboBox behaviour in JTable

  Okay, this is a hard one to explain but I'll try my best. I have a JTextField and a JComboBox in a JTable, whose getCellEditor method has been overriden as follows: public TableCellEditor getCellEditor( int row, int column ) { if ( column == 3 ) { // m_table is the JTable if ( m_table.getSelectedRowCount() == 1 ) { JComboBox choices = new JComboBox(); choices.setEditable( true ); choices.addItem( new String( "item 1" ) ); return new DefaultCellEditor( choices ); } return super.getCellEditor( row, column ); } Here are the behavioral differences (NOTE that from this point on, when I say JTextField or JComboBox, I mean the CELL in the JTable containing either component): When I click once on a JTextField, the cell is highlighted. Double clicking brings up the caret and I can input text. Whereas, with a JComboBox, single clicking brings up the caret to input text, as well as the combo drop down button. When I tab or use the arrow keys to navigate to a JTextField and then start typing, the characters I type automatically get entered into the cell. Whereas, when I navigate to a JComboBox the same way and then start typing, nothing happens apart from the combo drop down button appearing. None of the characters I type get entered unless I hit F2 first. So here's my question: What do I need to do have JComboBoxes behave exactly like JTextFields in the two instances described above? Please do not ask why I'm doing what I'm doing or suggest alternatives (it's the way it is and I need to do it this way) and yes, I've read the API for all components in question....the problem is, it's a swing API. • JSP: How can I still get the code on my error page to run, even if I can't display it?

  I've defined an error-page in my web.xml: <error-page> <exception-type>java.lang.Exception</exception-type> <location>/error.jsp</location> </error-page> In that error page, I have a custom tag that I created. The tag handler for this tag e-mails me the stacktrace of whatever error occurred. For the most part this works great. Where it doesn't work great is if the output has already begun being sent to the client at the time the error occurs. In that case, we get this: SEVERE: Exception Processing ErrorPage[exceptionType=java.lang.Exception, location=/error.jsp] java.lang.IllegalStateException I believe this error happens because we can't redirect a request to the error page after output has already started. The work-around I've used is to increase the buffer size on particularly large JSP pages. But I'm trying to write a generic error handler that I can apply to existing applications, and I'm not sure it's feasible to go through hundreds of JSP pages making sure their buffers are big enough. Is there a way to still allow my stack trace e-mail code to execute in this case, even if I can't actually display the error page to the client?

  quick back story-- I am working on ASP.Net based template editor that lets authors create text templates using Javascript inserted placeholder tags that will be filled in with dynamic text when the templates are used to display the final results. For example the author might create a template like The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. The application would eventually replace the tag with a dynamic word down the road (though it's not specifically relevant to this post) The word foo was generated dynmamically. Depending on the circumstances, the template may be created in a text input, textarea or a modified version of the Ajax Control Toolkit HTML Editor. There might be 40 or more of these editable elements on the page, so using lots of stripped down or modified HTML editors would probably bog the page down too much. The problem is that the tags such as [%12#add] are displayed inline with the user text and the result is confusing and aesthetically gross. The goal is parse the contens of the source element and when a tags such as [%12#add] are encountered, display something prettier and less cryptic to the user such as a stylable element or image wherever tags such as [%12#add] occur. The application still needs the template text with the tags on postback. So the user might see The word tag placeholder was generated dynamically. but the original template would still be the value of the text input box The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. It seems HTML editors like the ACT version and FckEditor accomplish this by rendering their output in an IFrame, but rather than kill myself trying to roll a lighter specialized version myself, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of an existing free component or approach that has already tackled this. With good reason, I don't think S.O. allows HTML formatting, but the bold "tag placeholder" above would ideally be something like tag placeholder.

The fieldset tag is in the response, so you don't see it here but it's there - everything is returned back fine (I checked with Firebug). Why do the above two lines of JS never run or have any effect?

• JQuery and IE8 - Form posting on tab change

  This issue is only happening in IE8 - Firefox 3.5 seems to handle it fine. I have JQuery UI tabs setup on a page. Within each tab is a form that users can do stuff from. I have defined in the select option of the using: $("#tabs").tabs({select: function(event, ui) {...}}); a submitForm function that submits the form of the tab the user was on previous to changing tabs. This all works in all browsers. The issue comes in that IE does both the POST of the form on the previous tab and the GET for content of the newly requested tab and or really close to the same time (from what I can tell walking through the debugger). As a result, if a tab is dependent on the form input from another tab, the data is stale - does not match the user input from the previous tab. How can I either a) force the POST to complete before rendering the next tab or b) force IE to not make the POST and GET for the next tab at the same time?...or c) some other option?

• PPR in tr:selectOneChoice does not work

  Hi, I have a simple testing page that test my PPR on a selectOneChoice component. when select a value from selectOnechoice 1, the selected value will display on a output label and also reset the selected value and the other selectOneChoice.   Greetings! I'm doing a Form on ASP.NET MVC 2, in my view I have a TextBox for the name, and two buttons. One of the buttons is for submit, and the other one have a function in JS, that add's another textbox, and a drop down list. In the post controller action method, how do I get all the parameters? • Separating Content (aspx) from Code (aspx.cs) in ASP.NET

  I would like to know what is the best practice on separating the content of an aspx page (ASP.NET 3.5) from the code (I'm using C#). I have a form that users can type data in - for example they are allowed to enter a percent. If they Otherwise for example I would like to display the following error messages: <p id="errormsg" class="percenthigh">Please enter a percent below 100</p> <p id="errormsg" class="percentnegative">Percent cannot be below 0</p> <p id="errormsg" class="percentnot">This is not a percent</p> So in essence I'm hiding the error messages and showing one depending on what the user input is. I believe this is the best way to seperate the content from the code behind. However, how do I select elements and hide/unhide them depending on the user input? I'm aware I can do a runat="server" on the elements but the problem is that I can't select by class and am limited only to ID's. What workarounds do you recommend? Aside from putting in the values in code behind which is notoriously difficult to debug. Also has this been "fixed" in ASP.NET 4?
