• My IIS server won't serve SSL sites to some browsers

I've got an IIS 6.0 server that won't serve pages over SSL to some browsers. In Webkit-based browsers on OS X 10.6, I can't load pages at all. In MSIE 8 on Windows XP SP3, I can load pages, but it will sometimes hang downloading images or sending POSTs. Working: Firefox 3.6 (OS X + Windows) Chrome (Windows) Partially Working: MSIE 8 (works sometimes, but hangs up, especially on POSTs) Not Working: Chrome 5 (OS X) Safari 5 (OS X) Mobile Safari (iOS 4) On OS X (the easiest platform for me to test on), Chrome and Firefox both negotiate the same TLS Cipher, but Chrome hangs on or after the post-negotiation handshake. • How can I get Transaction Logs to auto-truncate after Backup

  Setup: Sql Server 2008 R2, databases set up with Full recovery mode. I have set up a maintenance plan that backs up the transaction logs for a number of databases on the server. It is set to create backup files in sub-directories for each database, verify backup integrity is turned on, and backup compression is used. The job is set to run once every 2 hours during business hours (8am-6pm). I have tested the job and it runs fine, creates the log backup files as it should. However, from what I have read, once the transaction log is backed up, it should be ok to truncate the transaction log. I do not see any option for doing this in the Sql Server Maintenance Plan designer. How can I set this up?

• How can I stop new Command Prompt windows spawned by another program from covering my foreground win

  Under Windows 7 x64, when I'm ripping CDs with Exact Audio Copy, it spawns a Command Prompt window each time it invokes the external MP3 compression program I use, LAME. While that's going on, I usually like to surf the web. However, I find it quite annoying that even when Firefox has the foreground, the Command Prompt windows spawned by EAC are coming up in the foreground, on top of my Firefox window. Is there a way to make those new Command Prompt windows spawn in the background? Alternatively, is there a way to make the current active window stay in the foreground / on top while I'm using it?

• How can I apply a DSP to my microphone in windows?

  I'd like to be able to run my microphone through arbitrary DSP filters--Mostly for compression and amplification, but also noise cancelation would be nice. I'd then like to take that output and put it back in a virtual audio device that I could use as input for skype, mumble, teamspeak, or any other VOIP program. With a program like Virtual Audio cable, I can do the 'fake devices' part but as far as I know it does not allow any kind of filtering inline. Does a program like this exist? Or some combination of programs that can be combined to accomplish this?

  Hi, I have some really sensitive data that I am trying to compress and back up so I can reformat. It's absolutely imperative that nothing happens to these files. I'm a developer so I have very little room for error... plus I'd really hate it if any of my .mp3's got corrupted! File Formats Include... .mp3 .php .js .ai - .psd - .flv (and many more) Is the mac OSX file compression safe enough? Or should I look elsewhere? Is there a more efficient/secure file-format other than .zip (i'm assuming so...)

• Batch processing multi-TIFF in Irfan view

  I have to convert DPI of more than 5k Tiff images on a monthly basis from 200x200 to 100x100. I can do that in Irfan view using a .bat file that i have created.. the following is the .BAT file code @"c:\program files\irfanview\i_view32.exe" "e:\batch1*.tif /aspectratio /resample /tifc=4 /dpi=(100,100) /convert=e:\batch2*.tif" %* Where tifc=4 is Fax 4 compression However, the above code doesn't help me change the DPI for other pages except for Only the first page in the tiff thats getting converted to 100 DPI. Rest all pages are still 200 DPI. I am using WinXP Professional and Irfan View. Can anyone tell me what I am missing. Or any other alternative program where I can create a .bat file and run the batch process using Command line?

• Is there a way to use an inline PNG image in an Outlook e-mail?

  In my work as a developer I sometimes find myself sending details emails with screenshots to illustrate some point or problem. The content of these screenshots is often text. So knowing that PNG is much better at handle compression of images with text, I save my screenshots as PNG and insert them into my email. However whenever I check my sent mail, the images are clearly being sent as a JPG because they look horribly compressed. I'm using Outlook 2003 as my email program. Is there some setting I can change to make Outlook send inline images as PNGs?

• Unable to find valid certification path to requested target while CAS authentication

  I'm trying to configure CAS authentication. It requires both CAS and client application to use HTTPS protocol. Unfortunately we should use self-signed certificate (with CN that doesn't have anything in common with our server). Also the server is behind firewall and we have only two ports (ssh and https) visible. As far as there're several application that should be visible externally, we use Apache for ajp reverse proxying requests to these applications. Secure connections are managed by Apache, and all Tomcat are not configured to work with SSL. • SQL Merge Replication - Filter Sets

  I have a "working" Replication Set in SQL 2005 that we use in house to our users at remote branches on SQL Express 2005. I want to apply a filter to our biggest Set to help minimize the bandwidth impact. What I am asking is what considerations do I need to take into account before throwing a filter on there. Will it cause any issues I should be aware of? Does it affect compression adversely. Will everyone need to reinitialize after applying it? Any heads up or insight would be appreciated. Thanks,

  Let's say I have 50 GiB of files that weights around 500 KiB each. My guess is that having, for example, 5 large files of 10 GiB each with the same content archived in them would be better for hard drive performance. Am I correct? Will there be a noticeable gain on an NTFS filesystem? ===================================================================== Finally, which tool could I use to group the files together while retaining the ability to modify the content of the archive with zero or minor performance loss? For example, I like TrueCrypt archiving because after mounting an archive file, it creates a drive which I can use seamlessly as if it was a normal drive. The only thing with TrueCrypt is that I don't need encryption/compression, only archiving.

• Restoring using SyncBack without profiles

  I backed up my internal hard drive (C:) using SyncBack onto an external (USB) hard drive with maximum compression. I then performed a clean install of Windows Vista onto the computer. I forgot to copy the SyncBack logs before the clean install. And now when ever I try to restore a directory, the RAR/ZIP files are copied to the system hard drive instead of extracting their contents to the hard drive. Also, SyncBack is not traversing the folders during the Restore process. How can I tell SyncBack to expand the compressed files? I am running the freeware version of SyncBack. I have to create new log files (unless SyncBack put them somewhere on the external drive). My alternative is to write a program that traverses the folders on the external drive and extracts files from the RAR/ZIP files. I am using Windows Vista, Service Pack 2, and the data size prior to backup was about 200 GB. (The backup process took over 72 hours due to "hiccups").

• Data Archiving vs not

  For the sake of data integrity, is it wiser to archive your files or just leave them unarchived. No compression is being used. My thinking is that if you leave your files unarchived, if there is some form of corruption it will only hurt a smaller number of files. Though if you archive, lets say all of your documents, if there is even the slightest corruption, the entire archive is unrecoverable. So whats the best way to keep a clean file system, but not be subject to data corruption.

• A simple Volume Replication Tool for large data set?

  I'm looking for a solution to the following: Server A (Site A) - Win 2008 R2 - approx 10TB (15TB max) of data - well over 8 million files Server B (Site B) - Win 2008 R2 I want to assynchronously replicate Server A's volume to a volume on Server B for data redundancy. Something that I can say to my users, "go here for data" when/if Server A goes belly up due to machine problems, disaster, etc. Windows 2008 R2 does have DFS, but microsoft does not apparently support this large of a dataset (or more accurately, more than 8 million files - according to the docs I could find). I also looked at Veritas Volume Replication, but this seems almost too much as I would also require Veritas Volume Manager. There are numerous "back-up" software which makes a 1-1 backup, which would be ok, but since it will be transfering over internet, I'd like something that has compression during transfer like DFS has. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding this?

The destination is an external hard drive on USB 2.0. Searching on SuperUser and Stack Overflow show articles, but don't mention full backup of the registry and complete restore using CDROM. I would also like to have compressed output and incremental backups. One article mentions CloneZilla, but their web page says that the incremental feature is not supported. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1. I need to backup 200 GB onto a 230 GB drive and would like to have multiple backups (thus the need for compression). • How do I get Windows 7 wallpaper to display the company logo properly?

  Windows 7 is not displaying our company background properly. Curves show pixelation and straight lines are jagged. I'm working with a scalable vector graphics (SVG) image that I've exported to the same resolution (pixel dimensions, to be technical) as the desktop, which is 1440x900. I have tried exporting the image as a .png, .jpg, and .bmp. All of these look correct in an image viewing program, such as Windows Photo Viewer and Paint, but when I set the Windows background to these images, curves show pixelation and straight lines are jagged. Reading online, it seems that behind the scenes, Windows is converting the image to a .jpg with low quality compression, which is causing the issue. I've tried setting the image as a background through Internet Explorer, saving it as a .jpg, and putting the file in the Windows photo directory as suggested in some online forums, but none of those solutions have fixed my issue.

• PDF rendering of images seems to vary from viewer to viewer with blurring?

  I'm generating PDF figures in Adobe Illustrator CS5 that include embedded images. I've noticed that the images look dramatically different when I display the same PDF in Preview, Skim or Adobe Reader (I'm on OS X). See screenshots. Adobe Reader displays them "correctly" while Skim and Preview blurs the image out each in a different way. Is there a setting I can set when saving my PDF from Illustrator so that the images are displayed correctly in Skim and Preview? The PDF was generated in Illustrator and saved without any compression or downsampling.   I am not sure if this is the correct place to post, but I couldn't find anywhere better. I am looking for a webcam/movie cam and this site seems more addressed to still images, but ... I am looking for a small, rugged web-cam which can be hand-held or perhaps head-mounted (failing that I can settle for a tripod mount, but I need portability). It must have its own IP address so that anyone can view its video stream from a web browser. I would prefer 2 way voice communication too. Encryption of data is nice, as is compression (H.264). To keep things simple I'm gonna use a backup solution (JungleDisk) that uses VSS to back up the DB file. SQL fully supports VSS and on requests freezes DB I/O, so I understand I'm taking snapshots. JungleDisk supports doing differential back up and compression, so it simplifies things and keeps the cost/bandwidth down. Is it enough to just backup up db file (mdf). Do I need to back up transaction log (ldf) file as well? I'm ok with losing a day's worth of work (since the last backup). if I go this route, what's the best way to restore the database? are there any issues with this approach I'm not aware of?

  I regularly attend over-the-phone meetings, where is a polycom/polispan device on the other side. The quality of the sound is bad, even those whose English is a first language sometimes are struggling to realize what is being said on the other side. I understand this is because of too aggressive audio compression in the line. Does anyone know any good audio chat software which does not over-compress audio stream. The IP channel between two offices is wide enough. In other words, you should be able to listen to a music (not only a speech) from the remote side with good quality. So, Skype is too over-compressing as well. Does anyone know anything like that?

It is inconvenient for me all 10 files and it will be inconvenient for the receiver to download all 10 files (it can be annoying to do the same operation 10 times). I would like to put all 10 files into one files (I think it can be done as archive). How can I do it? Important details. I am working in the Windows 7 and prefer to do the mentioned operation from the command line. In the directory, where I have my 10 files, I have many other files which I would not like to include into the archive. The files are small, so compression rate and size do not play any role. I just one to have an easy way to put 10 files into one and then easily to extract these 10 files.
