  • Store the day of the week and time

    - by bsiddiqui
I have a two part question about storing day(s) of the week and time in a database. I'm using Rails 4.0, ruby 2.0.0, and postgres. I have certain events and those events have a schedule. For the event Skydiving for example, for example, I might have Tuesday and Wednesday and 3 pm. 1) Is there a way for me to store the the record for Tuesday and Wednesday in one row or do should I have two records? 2) What is the best way to store the day and time? Is there a way to store day of week and time (not datetime) or should these be separate columns? If they should be separate, how would you store day of week? I was thinking of storing them as integer values (0 for Sunday, 1 for Monday, etc) since that's how wday method for the Time class does it. Any suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks!

  • What are good alternatives to SQL (the language)?

    - by Brendan Long
I occasionally hear things about how SQL sucks and it's not a good language, but I never really hear much about alternatives to it. So, are other good languages that serve the same purpose (database access) and what makes them better than SQL? Are there any good databases that use this alternative language? EDIT: I'm familiar with SQL and use it all the time. I don't have a problem with it, I'm just interested in any alternatives that might exist, and why people like them better. I'm also not looking for alternative kinds of databases (the NoSQL movement), just different ways of accessing databases.

  • SQLITE - INSERT does not return error but no data is inserted.

    - by Nick
    I am attempting to insert data into a local SQLITE database file from a C# application. The transaction does not throw any errors but the data is not inserted. The same insert statement works from within a query analyzer. Do I need to perform a commit? Is there a Commit method? Command's transaction property is null.. var command = new SQLiteCommand(insert.BuildInsert(tableName,keyValuePairs),Connection); command.ExecuteNonQuery();

  • Storing dates i Train schedule MYSQL

    - by App_beginner
Hi I have created a train schedule database in MYSQL. There are several thousand routes for each day. But with a few exceptions most of the routes are similar for every working day, but differ on weekends. At this time I basically update my SQL tables at midnight each day, to get the departures for the next 24 hours. This is however very inconvenient. So I need a way to store dates in my tables so I don't have to do this every day. I tried to create a separate table where I stored dates for each routenumber (routenumbers are resetted each day), but this made my query so slow that it was impossible to use. Does this mean I would have to store my departure and arrival times as datetimes? In that case the main table containing routes would have several million entries. Or is there another way? My routetable looks like this: StnCode (referenced in seperate Station table) DepTime ArrTime Routenumber legNumber

  • How to get a list of users for all instance's databases

    - by stee1rat
I guess the procedure should be something like this: declare @db varchar(100) declare @user varchar(100) declare c cursor for select name from sys.sysdatabases open c fetch next from c into @db while @@fetch_status = 0 begin print @db exec ('use ' + @db) declare u cursor for select name from sys.sysusers where issqlrole <> 1 and hasdbaccess <> 0 and isntname <> 1 open u fetch next from u into @user while @@fetch_status = 0 begin print @user fetch next from u into @user end print '--------------------------------------------------' close u deallocate u fetch next from c into @db end close c deallocate c But the problem is that exec ('use ' + @db) doesn't work. And i always get user list of currently chosen database. How should i fix that? P.S.: I want this code to work on both 2000 and 2005 sql servers.

  • Using Rails, how can I set my primary key to not be an integer-typed column?

    - by Rudd Zwolinski
I'm using Rails migrations to manage a database schema, and I'm creating a simple table where I'd like to use a non-integer value as the primary key (in particular, a string). To abstract away from my problem, let's say there's a table employees where employees are identified by an alphanumeric string, e.g. "134SNW". I've tried creating the table in a migration like this: create_table :employees, {:primary_key => :emp_id} do |t| t.string :emp_id t.string :first_name t.string :last_name end What this gives me is what seems like it completely ignored the line t.string :emp_id and went ahead and made it an integer column. Is there some other way to have rails generate the PRIMARY_KEY constraint (I'm using PostgreSQL) for me, without having to write the SQL in an execute call? NOTE: I know it's not best to use string columns as primary keys, so please no answers just saying to add an integer primary key. I may add one anyway, but this question is still valid.

  • mysql stored routine vs. mysql-alternative?

    - by user522962
We are using a mysql database w/ about 150,000 records (names) total. Our searches on the 'names' field is done through an autocomplete function in php. We have the table indexed but still feel that the searching is a bit sluggish (a few full seconds vs. something like Google Finance w/ near-instant response). We came up w/ 2 possibilities, but wanted to get more insight: Can we create a bunch (many thousands or more) of stored procedures to speed up searches, or will creating that many stored procedures bog-down the db? Is there a faster alternative to mysql for "select" statements (speed on inserting & updating rows isn't too important so we can sacrifice that, if necessary). I've vaguely heard of BigTable & others that don't support JOIN statements....we need JOIN statements for some of our other queries we do. thx

  • Efficient way to access a mapping of identifiers in Python

    - by sixbelo
I am writing an app to do a file conversion and part of that is replacing old account numbers with a new account numbers. Right now I have a CSV file mapping the old and new account numbers with around 30K records. I read this in and store it as dict and when writing the new file grab the new account from the dict by key. My question is what is the best way to do this if the CSV file increases to 100K+ records? Would it be more efficient to convert the account mappings from a CSV to a sqlite database rather than storing them as a dict in memory?

  • Visual Studio 2010 deploys views too late in deploy process

    - by Markus
I have a database project in my VS2010 solution. I recently changed a view and and changed a number of functions to use this view instead of going directly against a table. But now when I deploy I get errors on most of these functions because the column asked for does not exists in the view yet. The update of the view happends later than the update of UDF's. Is there any way to change this behaviour? Wouldn't the best thing be if the deploy script updated in this order: tables, views, SP and UDF. It seems like tables is updated first, but the views are just thrown in somewhere in the middle of the deploy script.

  • How can I treat a sequence value like a generated key?

    - by Jeff Knecht
Here is my situation and my constraints: I am using Java 5, JDBC, and DB2 9.5 My database table contains a BIGINT value which represents the primary key. For various reasons that are too complicated to go into here, the way I insert records into the table is by executing an insert against a VIEW; an INSTEAD OF trigger retrieves the NEXT_VAL from a SEQUENCE and performs the INSERT into the target table. I can change the triggers, but I cannot change the underlying table or the general approach of inserting through the view. I want to retrieve the sequence value from JDBC as if it were a generated key. Question: How can I get access to the value pulled from the SEQUENCE. Is there some message I can fire within DB2 to float this sequence value back to the JDBC driver?

  • Replace data in MySQL table with data from another table

    - by Oli
I am trying to modify an existing MySQL database for use in a new application. I have a table of items (table_items), which has multiple fields, including "ItemID" and "ItemName". I have another table (table_list) which has "ItemName" in it, but no ItemID. I need to either update this table to contain ItemID instead of ItemName, or create a new table which imports ItemIDs from table_items as opposed to the ItemName when table_list.ItemName = table_items.ItemName. I have tried the following: UPDATE table_list A, table_items B SET A.ItemName = B.ItemID WHERE A.ItemName = B.ItemName The current table has over 500,000 rows and every time i try this in PHPMyAdmin i get the error "the MySQl server has gone away". Any help greatly appreciated.

  • FastObjects.NET(is an OODB from Versant) performence in Real Scenerios?

    - by Lalit
FastObjects.NET Saves the whole class object(if marked with attribute Persistent) at once in file system(using serilization or similar technology). They are promissing that it is even faster then normal SQL DB approach. My team also thought it is better and faster to save the whole object once instead of each field one by one. Defination of their website: FastObjects .NET 10.0 fully conforms to the Microsoft.NET 2.0 framework. Tightly integrated with Visual Studio 2005, it offers a developer-friendly, object-oriented alternative to a relational database for .NET persistence. I want to have your experiences of using FastObjects in production scenerio? They are promising for Indexing/Transaction/clustoring/replication.

  • Storing Values in colunms alphabetic?

    - by Mdillion
Is there any benefit to storing content alphabetic in columns? Maybe make lookups faster? If yes then when i add new lookup values to my tables do i need to rebuild the PK for the looup values to fit in the new text? Say a table like this: City_tbl city_id: example: 1120 City_name: example: New York. If I need to add Chicago to it, do i add it at the bottom of the list with the next ID which may be 2000 or do i inset it after the city in alphabetic order which would mean I need to update the PK Id of all following IDs by 1. Only benefit I know about is when I have to manually add lookup values without quering the database I can quickly check the lookup value list for exiting items with ease. But not sure if it may make lookups faster or something if the system knows the text is in aplhabetic order.

  • How can I create a sample SQLLite DB for my iPhone app?

    - by Dr Dork
I'm diving in to iPhone development and I'm building an iPhone app that uses the Core Data framework and my first task will be to get the model setup with a few that will display it. Thus far, I have the model defined and my Managed Object Files created, but I don't have a database with any sample data. What's a quick way to create a DB that conforms to my schema? Are there any tools that can generate a sample DB using my schemas? Is there a good tool I can use to directly manipulate the data in DB for testing purposes? Thanks in advance for your help! I'm going to continue researching this question right now.

  • How do online stores handle 2 customers that add the last item to their cart?

    - by Alex
I'm making a store web app for a college class. I'm wondering what do stores like Amazon do when there is only 1 item left? Do they let multiple customers add the last item to their cart, and whoever checks out first gets it? Meaning that the inventory database is updated after purchase. or Do they let only one customer add the last item to their cart and remove the item from the inventory. If the customer's session times out, then the item is put back in the inventory.

  • To use an api or store a large dataset in a rails app?

    - by Dave
Hi all- I am working on a site that has the potential to need a LOT of space. Basically we hope to have every video game every created stored in a database along with an image of the cover. There are some api's out there that might be able to help, like GiantBomb's (www.giantbomb.com). We are trying to decide whether to store the data locally and if so where to find that comprehensive a list, or make calls to the api on demand. The problem with the latter is likely latency and also downtime problems. Assuming we want to store it locally here are the questions: 1) Where can we find this kind of data (yes, I looked on google, and no I couldnt find anything:)) 2) What is the most efficient way to encode and store the images? Thanks!

  • Does iBatis enforce a primary key on my table?

    - by Yousui
Hi guys, I'm working on a legacy project. The database is poorly designed. I want to change the DB layer now. The first think go through my mind is hibernate, but I hibernate need a primary key on my table. In fact some of my table does not have primary key. So I did a google search and I find iBatis, it's sounds very good with it. But I don't know whether iBatis enforce a primary key on my table? Thanks.

  • Some websites to learn about MySQL tables and creating databases (The Do's and Don'ts)

    - by redsoxmaniac
I am venturing on making a website with a database for baseball games for an intramural league. I have made databases before, but this project seems to have many fields that will require at least 3 tables. I want to make the tables correct, so that I can sort and gather information from multiple fields properly ( such as the team table querying total goals scored ). Is there a website where there is a MySQL tutorial on do's and don'ts for making somewhat complex databases? Not intro tutorials, but more around where you get into combining multiple pieces of information correctly. Any source would be helpful, thanks!

    - by SzamDev
Hi I have 2 PCs, each one of them has MS SQL Server 2008 installed on it and there is a database with data in it. I need a way that I can move data in my DB from this MS SQL Server to another one (another PC which has the same DB) move data from one PC to another one - There is one proplem, the ID column, because each DB in my 2 PCs has data in it so this column counts from 1,2,3,....... ( data will be conflict with other data in my DB ) Is there any way to solve my proplem and move data successfully?

  • My tricky SQL Update query not working so well.

    - by Spooks
I am trying to update a table in my database with another row from another table. I have two parameters one being the ID and another being the row number (as you can select which row you want from the GUI) this part of the code works fine, this returns one column of a single row. (select txtPageContent FROM (select *, Row_Number() OVER (ORDER BY ArchiveDate asc) as rowid from ARC_Content Where ContentID = @ContentID) as test Where rowid = @rowID) its just when i try to add the update/set it won't work. I am probably missing something update TBL_Content Set TBL_Content.txtPageContent = (select txtPageContent FROM (select *, Row_Number() OVER (ORDER BY ArchiveDate asc) as rowid from ARC_Content Where ContentID = @ContentID) as test Where rowid = @rowID) Thanks for the help! (i have tried top 1 with no avail)

  • Implementing "select distinct ... from ..." over a list of Python dictionaries

    - by daveslab
Hi folks, Here is my problem: I have a list of Python dictionaries of identical form, that are meant to represent the rows of a table in a database, something like this: [ {'ID': 1, 'NAME': 'Joe', 'CLASS': '8th', ... }, {'ID': 1, 'NAME': 'Joe', 'CLASS': '11th', ... }, ...] I have already written a function to get the unique values for a particular field in this list of dictionaries, which was trivial. That function implements something like: select distinct NAME from ... However, I want to be able to get the list of multiple unique fields, similar to: select distinct NAME, CLASS from ... Which I am finding to be non-trivial. Is there an algorithm or Python included function to help me with this quandry? Before you suggest loading the CSV files into a SQLite table or something similar, that is not an option for the environment I'm in, and trust me, that was my first thought.

  • Delphi - change text color based on current record value

    - by Welliam
using db controls connected to a FireBird database. and I have a simple dblabel I want to change text color based on current value for current record The user navigate using the dbnavigator and I wrote code in the navigator button click. but there is a problem the code always read the previous record value not the current one so the color is wrong !! for example: procedure <navigator button click>; begin if table1.FieldByName('field1').AsString = 'val1' then <dblabel.textcolor> := red else <dblabel.textcolor> := green; end; but as I said the value is one record behind. why is that and what is the best approach to change label text color ? • Update multiple values in a single statement

    - by Kluge
I have a master / detail table and want to update some summary values in the master table against the detail table. I know I can update them like this: update MasterTbl set TotalX = (select sum(X) from DetailTbl where DetailTbl.MasterID = MasterTbl.ID) update MasterTbl set TotalY = (select sum(Y) from DetailTbl where DetailTbl.MasterID = MasterTbl.ID) update MasterTbl set TotalZ = (select sum(Z) from DetailTbl where DetailTbl.MasterID = MasterTbl.ID) But, I'd like to do it in a single statement, something like this: update MasterTbl set TotalX = sum(DetailTbl.X), TotalY = sum(DetailTbl.Y), TotalZ = sum(DetailTbl.Z) from DetailTbl where DetailTbl.MasterID = MasterTbl.ID group by MasterID but that doesn't work. I've also tried versions that omit the "group by" clause. I'm not sure whether I'm bumping up against the limits of my particular database (Advantage), or the limits of my SQL. Probably the latter. Can anyone help?

  • What would be the most efficient way to do this search (mysql or text)?

    - by alex
Suppose I have 500 rows of data, each with a paragraph of text (like this paragraph). That's it.I want to do a search that is not only based on words. (%LIKE%, not FULL_TEXT) What would be faster? SELECT * FROM ...WHERE LIKE "%query%"; This would put load on the database server. Select all. Then, go through each one and do .find = 0 This would put load on the web server. This is a website, and people will be searching frequently.

  • Remove seconds from the TIME function?

    - by user1876032
Okay so have a database that uses the time functions for a list of events and then displays the data as: echo "<b>Time Frame:"; echo "$time_start"; echo "&nbsp;-&nbsp;"; echo "$time_end"; Although that displays the time as 11:00:00 if i want the time to be 11:00 am. Is there anyway to make this time display as a standard "11:00"? and also if in the mysql datababse enter it as military time (ex. 13:00) to make it display 1:00pm? I have tried many things. Please help. http://pastebin.com/kaTZzGrx
