• rsync stuck with the --checksum option

  I use back-in-time to backup my Linux installation. It serves as an advanced wrapper for the rsync command. Today I tried to add /var/log to the list of folders to be backed up and it caused some serious performance problems. The job seems to stuck on a particular file and the CPU usage of the rsync parent process reaches 100%. I then used lsof to see which file caused the problem and it seems to be the /var/log directory. I did some googling and some experiments with the different rsync options and found --checksum to be the offender. Without the parameter, an incremental backup finishes properly in minutes. With it, the process will stuck when rsync tries to sync a constantly changing log file. This kind of make sense, but it still seems to be a bug to me. Am I using the option correctly? Is there a workaround for this?

• Windows XP alt-tab: How to restrict options to certain applications, in certain order and exclude others?

  In Windows XP Alt-tab keypress sequence to select applications, how can I ensure that certain applications always appear, in a certain order, with others always excluded? Background for asking is that most XP-based machines that I am working with on a shop floor present the list of shortcuts in a certain order and certain applications. There is one machine however, that displays an additional application. This is a hindrance to the users of the machines, as the nature of their work is routine and this variation disrupts the remembered sequence, "disrupts their flow". Thoughts? Being a good superuser, I research first before asking, and I found: Applications randomly alt-tab? (especially full screen games) Restore Alt-Tab behavior so that minimizing an app once again moves it to the end? (2. looks close to the control I need, but would need more finer, preciser control over what appears in the selection). Suggestions? (Thanks in advance.)

• One sentence descriptions of the various common software licenses?

  Instead of having to read entire documentation and sift through all the legalese, can someone outline the more common licenses in language that is short and sweet and gets right to the point? Specifically, I'm using a 3rd party control that uses the Apache 2.0 license. My intention is to use this in a proprietary application that I am building for a corporation's use (not resold, but I'm being paid for my work). Does this mean I can or cannot use this control? Does it mean that I must maintain copyright/license information in my code? Does it mean that I must mention copyright/license information in a clearly visible location in the app? EDIT In response to an answer below with a link to an article by Jeff Atwood, the Apache license is described as follows: Apache License Open Permissive 9 Requires derivative works to provide notification of any licensed or proprietary code in a common location. Does this notification need to be in a "common location" in my source code or a common location visible within the app? • What kinds of languages would be most useful for this kind of webapp?

  I've had some experience with programming in the past (2-3 years of C++ self-teaching), so I'm no stranger to the programming process, but there are so many languages out there that I'm lost when thinking about this project idea that's been floating around my head: I would like to create a webapp that would be used for helping somebody figure out what kinds of productivity tools would suit them. The first part of the app would basically be a survey with a variety of questions that would help weed out tools that wouldn't be useful for them. (Slider bar between minimalist and maximizer, slider bar between all free apps and no cost limit, checkboxes on what platforms are required, etc.) While the person is filling out the survey, they will see a web of applications, webapps, and other tools forming on the screen with links showing the relationships the programs have with eachother (syncing supported, good combinations of apps, etc.), along with a list of applications below sorted by general use (notetaking, document organization, storage, etc.) I would imagine that each program entered into the database that will be accessed would have a certain set of characteristics, ie. price, user friendliness, platforms supported, general uses, etc. and the survey would be designed to correlate to those elements and remove programs that don't match the criteria set. The difficult part of this entire process would be getting the web of applications to arrange itself and render properly. Now that I've finished mind-dumping, onto my question: What kinds/combinations of programming languages would you imagine being useful for this kind of project, and why? I learn best by setting up a project for myself like this one and tinkering with the languages, so I don't mind if the end product is out of reach from my current skill level. I'd just like some guidance so I don't fumble in the dark for too long.

  During recovery Oracle writes the following error: RMAN-06054: media recovery requesting unknown log: thread 1 seq 9 lowscn 4034762 I have used in mount mode this command: change archivelog all crosscheck; delete expired archivelog all; Then restore and tried to recover again:But still RMAN-06054 error.Than I wrote: run{ SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 9 THREAD 1; RESTORE DATABASE; RECOVER DATABASE; } It helped me to recover database...But after that when I do the backup and then recover the same error occurs and solution is the same... I wonder to solve this problem without SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 9 THREAD 1; maybe I should unregister this archive log from control file(I am using control file not catalog) Can you tell me how?

• "ssh root@server" hangs indefinitely long

  Hi, Sometimes my ssh client will take forever to login. This happens when the server is not responding (overloaded, killed processed, ...). My automated scripts will then fail because the ssh process will never exit. Is there a ssh configuration value to set a timeout in order to fail if ssh can't login after a predefined number of seconds? I know there are knobs on the server side, but I have to set this on the client side as the sshd process is not responding, or responding incorrectly. Thanks!

• “BAD” partition showing up in Partition Manager

  I tried to partition my primary hard disk (NTFS partitions) with qtparted and got stuck in the process. Consequently I had to kill the process and exit my knoppix live CD boot up. Even though I was expecting XP to get corrupted, it booted fine and showed up all the drives accessible. But when I opened this with partition manager 8, it shows up as “BAD”. I ran chkdsk /f without any success. My objective with qparted and partition magic was to resize my existing partitions and add some space to c: How do I fix this problem and resize my partitions? • How to monitor a folder and trigger a command-line action when a file is created or edited?

  I need to set up some sort of a script on my Vista machine, so that whenever a file is added to a particular folder, it automatically triggers a background process that operates on the file. (The background process is just a command-line utility that takes the file name as an argument, along with some other predefined options.) I'd like to do this using native Windows features, if possible, for performance and maintenance reasons. I've looked into using Task Scheduler, but after perusing the trigger system for a while, I haven't been able to make much sense of it, and I'm not even sure if it's capable of doing what I need. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

• Does Asus F8SV supports 1920*1080 resolution through DVI output? [closed]

  Devices: Asus F8Sv Laptop (Windows 7 ultimate, GeForce 8600m GT, display driver is 301.42, detected and downloaded from nvidia.com, VGA and DVI output interface) Gateway 23 inches LCD monitor (VGA, DVI-D with HDCP, and HDMI input) 18 pins DVI cable, VGA cable, both new. Problems: When connect laptop to monitor by VGA, resolution is automatically adapted to 1920*1080; but when using DVI connection, resolution on monitor is fixed to 1024*768, which is lower than my laptop default 1280*800. The maximum resolution in windows control panel is only 1024*768, while the Nvidia control panel provides options 1920*1080p and 1920*1080i, but clicking apply button does not work, the resolution just can not change. Possibly reason I guess: GeForce 8600m GT does not support 1920*1080 resolution through DVI outputs. Can anyone confirm it or give the real reason? edit: Problem solved by buying a HDMI to DVI-D adapter. Using this adapter and a HDMI cable, I can now enjoy 1080p movie.

• IIS 6.0 :: SSL certificate install :: issue

  Certificate request process works fine. Once the certificate is received from VeriSign, the installation process also works fine (no errors.) However, once installed, the new certificate is not "assigned." Meaning, when I view the IIS instance security properties, it still shows the previous certificate start & end dates. Thoughts? Windows 2003, Web Edition. I have 3 other Win2003WE machines, configured nearly the same, and do not have this problem.

  I need to reset my password. I have followed these steps: How do I reset a lost Administrative(root) password? However, then I go to "root" or "netroot" recovery options, it tells me: Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) Clearly, I do not know the root password. If I type Control-D, I return to the list of options. From this page I read: Under chapter 'The Other Way': 4. Highlight the line that begins kernel and press 'e' to edit But in the grub configuration file I have no line that starts with 'kernel'. Only: setparams 'Ubuntu...' recordfail set gxfpayload... insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root=... search --no-floppy... linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38... initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.... Those are all lines in my grub. Which line should I edit? Or is there another way to reset my password?

• Should developers do their own software releases (if there is a prod support team in place)?

  I know there are going to always be differences depending on the particular size, staff etc, but i wanted to get feedback in general around: In an environment where you have a production support team doing first line support and release management, is it better to simply have developers manage their own releases instead? In this case, its internal software at an insurance company but the question should be valid at any company, size, etc I think. Currently, we have our production team do releases but there is an argument that its inefficient and that if you allowed developers the ability to do it, they will focus more on making it simple and efficient and avoid basically passing on scripts, etc to run to another team. The counter argument is that if you don't have a check and balance, you could get a software team (or an individual) that doesn't a very hacky job about getting their software out there (making on the fly changes, not documenting the process, etc) and that by forcing the prod support team to do the actual release, it enforces consistency and proper checks and balances. I know this is not a black or white issue but I wanted to see what folks thought on this so the discipline and consistency is there but without the feeling that an inefficient process is in place.

Please restart the process with a new email address.". I really do not want to log back in again with a new subscribtion. • Migrating Split Access Database from one domain to another (not working, details in Q)

  Some background: I'm a programmer, not a network administrator, who has been asked to migrate some accounting software (Integrated Office Accounting version 3.2) from an existing domain (OLD_NETWORK) to a new domain (NEW_NETWORK). No-body at the office knows how it works under the hood. It is a split Access 2000 database with the back-end shared and on a file server (which is also the DC) using mapped drives. The DC is NT Server 4 SP 6. The new server is server 2003. The two networks are running independently (ie: two computers on each desk). I have been able to get new computers set up on NEW_NETWORK and working with the IOA software just perfectly but for one problem: The company here uses other entirely separate databases which access the tables IOA maintains (specifically the 'customers' table) via links. To switch between these systems, you press F11 then File-Open the appropriate database and away you go (this is necessary to maintain the permissions that the IOA system uses to protect the customers table). The entire database is Access 2000, the links go to other Access databases, SQL-Server is not involved in any way, nor is a migration to SQL server likely. If I can't migrate anything over, everything will stay as it is, and the NEW_NETWORK computers will not be used. The problem: When I try and update these seperate databases (I shall call one "BANK_ACCOUNT", but the name does not matter), it says "this recordset cannot be updated". It also will sometimes not pull information out of the 'customers' table (ie: date_entered) when looking at a report of everyone who opened a bank account on a certain day (ie: today). I have tried: Giving 'everyone' full control via. shared directory permissions Giving 'everyone' full control on a file system level Checking the permissions within Access (everyone has full read/write on all tables) Copying the entire server contents from one file server to another (ie: xcopy everything) Copying the entire local client files from one computer to another, putting them in the exact same position in the file system, with the same permissons (or full control to 'everyone'). Running as an Administrator Taking one of the NEW_NETWORK computers, having it join OLD_NETWORK and run the software (direct copy from a working system with identical drive mappings), this did not work Weeping openly My Question: Is there anything else I can try? (sorry for this being so long)

• mirroing hard drives of different sizes

  I have a dell server with two 18 gig drives in a Raid 1 config. I want to replace the drives with 400 gig drives. If I break the mirror and then remove one of the 18g drives, insert a 400g and create the mirror, then do the same process again with the other 400g drive, what will I have? I would like to think I would have a new 400g raid 1 drive. But I seem to remember that this process might result in only 18g of useable space on the 400g drives. Anyone know for sure? Thank

• IP Helper service uses 50-60% CPU every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds on Windows 7

  I have checked everything - all the processes in the process explorer. IP Helper service is causing CPU usage of over 50 % every 1 minute for 3-4 seconds then comes back to normal. In the task manager, the process is svchost.exe and the service is iphlpsvc.   Hi All, I have Richfaces application which I deploy to Glassfish v3. For many weeks (almost) everything works fine, but suddenly today a got following error. I have jsf-facelets-1.1.14.jar dependency in my pom.xml. I have no idea how to fix that. Help!!
