Swap, Swapiness and Standby: swapping starts when waking up

I'm running running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo W500 (Core2Duo T9400, 4GB Ram) Current kernel: 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 26 21:33:09 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- but the problems exists since a couple of months, surviving quite a few software (includig kernel) updates I regularly put my machine into suspend-to-ram (S3) and when the machine comes back up Ubuntu starts to swap out processes. I was able to observe that the used swap-space starts to grow right after the box returns. See munin graphs below, the gap (obviously) shows the timeframe in STR. Needless to say that the box becomes unusable while swapping, load goes up beyond 10. What I've done so far: lowered swappiness from default (60) to 10 (via /etc/sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness=10) -- this has improved the situation much, but sometimes the problem comes back, I have not found a trigger (like memory usage) for this for now lowered swappiness to 5 -- perhaps this has brought an improvement again Before going to STR the box ran stable without (swapping) problems for hours. Today when the issue showed up again I used this script (- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/479953/how-to-find-out-which-processes-are-swapping-in-linux) to find what processes have the most used swap space. Why does Windows Firewall want to block Google Chrome today?

I've been using the same public Wi-Fi (staying in a guesthouse) for over a week now. But this morning for the first time I got this puzzling warning from Windows Firewall: Why does Windows Firewall want to block one of the world's most popular web browsers today after being fine with it for years, and being fine with it on this connection for a week? Could it hinge on the words, some features? If so could it be something like a rare or new feature of Chrome that uses a different HTTP port? And if so why doesn't the security alert tell me any more about it? Or could it be a known bug in Windows Firewall? Or perhaps a known virus etc attaching itself to Google Chrome? Or is there a chance it's related to "Other browser makers follow Google's lead, revoke rogue certificates"? I haven't restarted Chrome for days and have downloaded but not installed a Windows update from a few days ago. So I'm not sure what may have managed to change on my machine since yesterday.

Start Chrome by command line, but adding some arguments to make it login into your Google account automatically

Is there a way to start Chrome calling it from the command line (using Linux), but providing it some argument to make it login into some Google account automatically? I'm looking for something like google-chrome -account foo -pass bar that I can easily put in a bash script later. A little background: I have a laptop connected to my TV, which is currently using just a mouse for user interaction. There's no google account logged in by default, and that's the way I want to keep it, so my kids can't come across videos and pictures in google and youtube that they are not supposed to see (e.g.: adult content, or anything marked as not appropriate for kids by the google's safe search filters). The bad thing about this is that there are some music videos in youtube that requires you to be logged in to see, usually those we (the adults) used to sing when playing karaoke... as the only input available is a mouse, I'm looking for a way to start with my google account without having to type the whole thing usin the on-screen keyboard. You may think "Why you can't use the keyboard, if the laptop is right there?". Well, it's in a kind of uncomfortable position - too high for me without a chair or something, as it's right above the furniture in where the TV is located. Is there a way to make this scriptable? If not, do you know any other workaround? Note: using the remember me after logging off or alike options are discarded, as the safe-search chrome version must be always the default version to run.

SVG rotation animation having problems on chrome for jelly bean, is there a workaround?

I've got a strange problem with chrome on jellybean running svg animations triggered from javascript. This JSFiddle example works fine on chrome and firefox on linux, but when I run it on android with chrome I get the final step of the animation painted at the beginning of the animation. I've tried this on both an Nexus 7 and Transformer Prime, they both have the problem. I've tested using firefox on the android devices and the problem doesn't exist. So I'm presuming that it's a defect with chrome. However I've seen other animations using svg that do not have this problem in chrome on jellybean. Is anyone aware of a way to get around this problem, or is there something that I'm doing in my animation/js that is a possible cause of the problem? I've now created a bug report at code.google.com, however I still need a workaround, if anyone can help me (or in case I'm doing something stupid). I've now discovered that this is reproducible on chrome for linux (and I suspect windows). If you click on the button to start the animation before the previous animation has completed then the problem occurs. In this case the hand is drawn at the end of the 45 degree sweep before it starts the sweep. I now suspect that I should be calling something to stop the animation before I change the animation. Anyway, hopefully someone can resolve this problem.

Using the Reactive Extensions with the Silverlight Toolkit and MEF

I have come across several instances of people having trouble using the new Reactive Extensions (v1.0.2317) in projects that reference the Silverlight Toolkit (Nov09) due to the fact that the original release of the Rx Framework (v1.0.0.0) was bundled with the Toolkit. The trouble really becomes evident if you are using the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) to discover and compose portions of your application. If you are using the CompositionInitializer, or any other mechanism that probes all of the loaded assemblies for valid exports, you will likely receive the following error: Inspecting the LoaderExceptions property yields the following: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Reactive, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1b331ac6720247d9' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. File name: 'System.Reactive, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1b331ac6720247d9' This is due to some of the Toolkit assemblies referencing the older System.Reactive.dll. I was able to work around the issue by bypassing the automatic probing of loaded assemblies and instead specified which assemblies my exports could be found. public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); // the following line causes a ReflectionTypeLoadException //CompositionInitializer.SatisfyImports(this); // skip the toolkit assemblies by specifying assemblies var catalog = new AssemblyCatalog(GetType().Assembly); var container = new CompositionContainer(catalog); container.ComposeParts(this); ShowReferences(); } With some simple xaml, I was able to print out exactly which libraries are currently loaded in the application. Where to place php libraries/extensions?

I am new to a lot of server configurations and options. I want to add extra php libraries/extensions to my server. Where do I add them? (I am on a CENTOS 6.5 VPS) For example, I want to add the phpseclib php extension: Their website instructions are minimum: Usage This library is written using the same conventions that libraries in the PHP Extension and Application Repository (PEAR) used to be written in (current requirements break PHP4 compatibility). In particular, this library needs to be in your include_path: <?php set_include_path(get_include_path() . PATH_SEPARATOR . 'phpseclib'); include('Net/SSH2.php'); ?> It tells me how to use it, but it doesn't tell me where to add the actual extension files. Should I added it under? usr/local/lib ? usr/local/lib/php ? usr/local/lib/php/pear ? Or can I add it under public_html? Also, my VPS has several users under /home/.. is that away to make the library available for only one user?

menu not showing in apps when maximized 12.10

I have removed the Global App Menu as I prefer to have the minimize, maximize, close buttons on the right side of each app. I did this with no problem in 12.04. I did an upgrade to 12.10 and noticed that Chrome, Chromium and Firefox all use the Global Menu. I have done the following: sudo apt-get autoremove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt I have disabled the Firefox extension. I removed the corresponding Firefox package but still only have a global menu. I tried Gconf but apparently that does not work in 12.10. I then tried Dconf and found this fix on Google: org gnome desktop wm preferences, look for "button_layout" on the right panel. Here is the problem, after desktop, I do not have wm. I reset Unity and got a message saying something about wm is missing. I rebooted and opened Chrome and still no fix. I then clicked maximize and once Chrome was not maximized anymore, the minimize, maximize, close buttons show up in Chrome. Same with Firefox! Any ideas? I am truly stumped. Firefox and Chrome work fine in KDE Plasma and Gnome when maximized.
