• How do I set font size to 0px in IE6?

  I have an unordered list, I'm trying to hide the text in the list. I can do this 2 ways that i know of: font-color: transparent; font-size: 0px; I prefer the 0px method as its not selectable. This issue is neither way works in IE6. The first way just doesn't work in IE6 at all, the 2nd leave a 1PX high font. Is there a way to hide the text in IE6? This is a visual thing, I know you can read the text by reading the source and that is OK, I just need it to visually not be there.

• Calling some functions before main in C

  I'd like to do some stuffs before main function. I have multiple source files. In each file, there is some work that needs to be done before main. It was no problem in C++, but problematic with C. In C++, this can be done by two ways: Exploiting a constructor of a global class/struct. Calling a function to a global variable For example, static const int __register_dummy_ = __AddRegisterMetaInfo(...); However, in C, either ways is impossible. Obviously, there is no constructor. So, the first option is inherently impossible. I thought that the second option would be possible, but not compiled in C (I tested only with Visual C++. It gives C2099.). C only allows a constant to a non-automatic variable. Is there any way to call some functions before main?

• How to view a DataTable while debuging

  I'm just getting started using ADO.NET and DataSets and DataTables. One problem I'm having is it seems pretty hard to tell what values are in the data table when trying to debug. What are some of the easiest ways of quickly seeing what values have been saved in a DataTable? Is there someway to see the contents in Visual Studio while debugging or is the only option to write the data out to a file? I've created a little utility function that will write a DataTable out to a CSV file. Yet the the resulting CSV file created was cut off. About 3 lines from what should have been the last line in the middle of writing out a System.Guid the file just stops. I can't tell if this is an issue with my CSV conversion method, or the original population of the DataTable. Update Forget the last part I just forgot to flush my stream writer.

• Notepad++ like "multi editing" in VIM?

  I'm switching from Notepad++ to VIM as main text editor. Notepad++ can have multiple cursors by holding down ctrl and clicking anywhere in the text, so if you type, the text appears in multiple locations. Is it possible in vim? Something like insert after selecting multiple rows in visual mode, but with the possibility to have cursors anywhere in the text. It's a feature I rarely use, also it's quite easily avoidable, I'm just curious, since its the only one I could't find a replacement for in vim yet.

  Hi, I going to get the command prompt from my C# application to compile some C++ files. • MS VC++ 6 class wizard

  Ok, I'm developing an application that has been in pretty much continous development over the last 16 years, from C in DOS, through various flavours of C++ and now is largely based around C++ with MFC and StingRay GUIs and various other SDKs. While I use VS 2005 for the release builds, I still use MSVC 6 for much of the GUI building, simply because ClassWizard is so much quicker in this environment than the weak equivalent tools that followed. Note that I am using ClassWizard to automatically generate code for my own user defined types (see Custom DDXs) and I like to add a lot of member variables and methods in one go. Creating them one at a time as per later versions of Visual Studio for me is a big backward step. At the same time, working with multiple IDEs is also a pain. My question is in two parts; Is there any way of getting ClassWizard to work is VS 2005 or VS 2008? Is there any drop in replacement, or alternative IDE, that provides similar levels of productivty for old C++ hacks such as myself?

• Crystal Reports Formula Workshop boolean condition to string

  I'm currently trying to create a report using Crystal Reports that comes with Visual Studio 2008. I would like to include a field of type boolean on my report that shows a string rather than true or false. The string should contain either contain a € or a % sign. How would I go about doing this in the Formula Workshop? I've tried things like e.g. if {tblAankoopDetails.SoortKorting} = true then "€" else "%" However this never seems to work and results in warnings such as "The formula result must be a number". This should be fairly simple but this is my first go at using Crystal Reports. Help would be much appreciated. Jay

• Compiling C-dll for Python OR SWIG-module creation, how to continue ??

  I reference this file "kbdext.c" and its headerfile listed on http://www.docdroppers.org/wiki/index.php?title=Writing_Keyloggers (the listings are at the bottom). I've been trying to compile this into a dll for use in Python or Visual Basic, but have not succeeded. I'm not familiar with C or GCC to sort out the problems or do the dll compile correctly. (I also get an error about snprintf not being declared when doing a regular compile of all the files). What are the steps I should do to make all functions available for other languages and external apps? Or is it perhaps easier to use SWIG and make a python module, instead of compiling a DLL?

• What is the term(s) used to describe programming language syntax?

  Is there an exact/correct term to describe this difference between the syntax/constructs of programming langauges e.g VB6 with its (if ... else ... endif) and C# with its curly braces for conditional statements. I'm using VB6 syntax and C# as examples since I'm more familiar with their syntax. For example, Visual Basic 6's syntax uses a more verbose, natural language like structure. If (id = 0) Then id = MyObject.Add(Me) Else Call MyObject.Update(Me) End If while C# has more concise syntax like: if (id == 0) { id = MyObject.Add(this); } else { MyObject.Update(this); } Conciseness? Natural languageness? Or is there a more "scientific" word for describing syntax?

  hi, My friend and I want to write a Facebook application. We've narrowed down the list of possible technologies to Ruby on Rails and C# with ASP. Here are the pros and cons we've thought of. Cons: ASP - proprietary tools like Visual Studio etc. cost (lots of) money. We both don't know ASP (although we're not bad at C#). RoR - It's scripting so might be harder to maintain. My friend doesn't know RoR at all (but he's a fairly proficient programmer so will probably be able to pick it up quickly). Pros: ASP - Facebook has an official SDK for .NET. RoR - I know RoR. It's open source, free and has fast development time. What says the community? Is there something we haven't thought of?

• WPF C#: Starting crash due to client 'Region and Language' settings

  Hi, I'm working on a WPF C# application, and it seems to crash with a few random people. So eventually I found out it was the 'Region and Language' settings that was responsible. For example, if I were to set my Format to English (United States) it will work, if I set it to Swedish (Sweden) it will crash from the start. When I test this in Visual Studio 2010 it gives error 'TypeInitializationException'. More precisely it does it here (it doesn't get passed the InitializeComponent() void): private void RadioButton_Checked(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Info.SortOrder = SortBy.Rank; } It claims the error at the first line, which is just setting an enum value to a variable. I guess it's just doing it there because it's the first thing it makes, or something. Anyone has any idea how to fix this? I've searched around but can't seem to find out how :( Any help is much appreciated! Thanks

• How do you make a WiX project build when dependent files have changes?

  Hi, I've adopted a Visual Studio solution that contains a number WiX projects. We build the solution from an MsBuild script to generate the product's installer msi. The problem I'm experiencing is that if I build (and don't rebuild), even if exe's and dll's get updated that need to be put in the installer, the WiX build system doesn't seem to detect this and skips building the installer as it thinks it's already up to date. How do I work out what the dependencies are that are needed to build a WiX project, and how do I tell the Wix build system to watch out for them changing so it knows to build instead of skip?

• asp.net page flickers

  I have an asp.net webform. I have the background as an image,that when i aslo have a menu bar, when i click on an icon, it uses response.redirect() to redirect to a new page, but when it loads up the page, it seems like the background image is slow. I can see the backgroud as white first and then split seconds later the background image will load up, this causes an illusion of flickering when it redirects to a new page. How do i solve this problem? When i tested using visual studio web server, it dont flicker. I am using a background image in the master page hosted up on the internet.

• How do I write to command line from a WPF application?

  Hi I know how to write to console but if I write to console in my program and call my program from the command line it won't display anything. How do I make it so that when I say Console.WriteLine or Console.Out.Writeline ir prints to the command prompt from which it was called and not somewhere else? Once again I know how to do Console.WriteLine so it's not that :-p unless I'm doing it wrong. From what I can tell it's probably something to do with Console.SetOut(TextWriter t) this is a WPF application and I need it to post its data to the command line while still retaining the GUI at startup. I've triple checked and my code hits the print lines, I can actually see the lines being printed to the Visual Studio output window, it just won't display in the command line when I run it manually without VS. If possible I need to conditionally have the console display. ie if run from command line (or even with command arguments), display or post to the prompt, otherwise do not.

It just doesn't feel right in terms of methods. I am starting to see this as well and am wondering what others thought: XButton.Click += HandleXButtonClick() ... void HandleXButtonClick() { ... } When using intellisense, Visual Studio handles these like so: XButton.Click += XButton_Click; ... void XButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { ... } I am seeking some advice on these naming conventions and would greatly appreciate some advice.

  I am about to start a project (.NET) and need to decide between TFS and SVN. I am more used to SVN(with tortoise client), CVS and VSS. Does TFS have all features available in SVN Have any of you switched from SVN to TFS and found it worthwhile? Also it looks like we may need Visual Studio if we need to work with TFS. [Edit] Money is not a consideration since we already have the licenses for TFS in place.   Hello, The question Is it possible to ask SSIS to cast a value and return NULL in case the cast is not allowed instead of throwing an error ? My environment I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and Sql Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003. The general context Just in case you're curious, here is my use case. I have to store data coming from somewhere in a generic table (key/value structure with history) witch contains some sort of value that can be strings, numbers or dates. The structure is something like this : table Values { Id int, Date datetime, -- for history Key nvarchar(50) not null, Value nvarchar(50), DateValue datetime, NumberValue numeric(19,9) } I want to put the raw value in the Value column and try to put the same value in the DateValue column when i'm able to cast it to Datetime in the NumberValue column when i'm able to cast it to a number Those two typed columns would make all sort of aggregation and manipulation much easier and faster later.   Hello. Neither did not get any response for my previous question, nor enough views :) So here I am now framing my query afresh. Is there any ORM that offers APIs to be used programatically? In my situation, a user will be helped through a wizard to define some entities. Thereafter those entites will be created in a database in form of tables (there will of course be some improvization). I need an ORM that offers APIs for modeling and creating entities during application runtime and not just during design time. Mine is a .Net application, therefore I was looking at Entity Framework. However, to me it looked tied to Visual Studio (I may be wrong also as I am new to it). Any recommendations? Or alternative point of view?

This code below is not enough to iterate all the items into the list because of the weird behaviour of getChildCount() function which only returns the visible item count. for (int i = 0; i < list.getChildCount(); i++) { item = (View)list.getChildAt(i); product = (Product)item.getTag(); // make some visual changes if product.id == someProductId } My screen displays 7 results and when there are more than 7 items into the list, it's not possible to access to the 8th item or so.. Only visible items.. Should I use ListIterator instead? Thanks.

  Currently I have a static class that I use as my logging module. I’ve added the class to my visual studio solution. Within the class I’ve specified the name and location of the log file to use. Which lets me do stuff like this – which I like and want. Logger.Information(“Page_Load”,”controls loaded correctly”); I’d like to refactor the code and move the logging functionality into a separately compiled assembly, if I did this I would then need to pass in the log file name and location to save the files too. However I don’t want to have to supply this information every time I call the ‘Logging’ method, this would be bad... Logger.Informtaion(“Page_Load”,”controls loaded correctly”,”logfile.txt”,”c:\temp”); Is there any way I can supply this information without having to specify it within each page or via the method call.

I guess it gets optimized away - normally it should first make a copy for the return value, then call assignment operator once more to assign it to variable sc. • Object viewer control needed (like QuickWatch in VS)

  Anyone know of any controls that you can add to your application to allow the user to check out the content of an object? I'm thinking of something like QuickWatch in Visual Studio, just list all properties of an object and its values and allow the user to drill down. I started writing one using reflection but it turned out be a lot of work to handle different kind of collections. This functionality would be used for debugging purposes mostly and not by regular users. I prefer WPF but Winforms would work as well.
