  • Why does everybody have the same MAC address as me?

    - by iblue
I just bought some consumer-grade McCheap PCI-E NICs (and this was a bad idea). They both have the same MAC address. When I google it, it seems like every card of that company has the same address: 00:50:43:00:45:3e. Shouldn't they be unique? According to lspci it's a Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 20). Is there a way to permanently flash a new address?

  • How do I configure a swap partition using swapspace

    - by jcalfee314
I finally have the swapspace project installed and running (via init.d). The purpose is to have a dynamically re-sizing swap partition. I'm clueless however on how to use it. It has good documentation but just does not go into that last step. How to I configure a swap partition using swapspace? The process is probably the same for any 3rd party program that would provide a swap space implementation to the kernel. I know this was intended to run as a process because the project provides an init.d script.

  • How do I install Apache Portable Runtime?

    - by apache
My Apache is installed by yum install apache And now I'm trying to install subversion server from source following instructions here. But when I try to configure, get an error: [root@vps303 subversion-1.6.9]# ./configure configure: Configuring Subversion 1.6.9 configure: creating config.nice checking for gcc... gcc checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out checking whether the C compiler works... yes ... checking for APR... no configure: WARNING: APR not found The Apache Portable Runtime (APR) library cannot be found. Please install APR on this system and supply the appropriate --with-apr option to 'configure' or get it with SVN and put it in a subdirectory of this source: svn co \ http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/apr/apr/branches/1.2.x \ apr Run that right here in the top level of the Subversion tree. Afterwards, run apr/buildconf in that subdirectory and then run configure again here. Whichever of the above you do, you probably need to do something similar for apr-util, either providing both --with-apr and --with-apr-util to 'configure', or getting both from SVN with: svn co \ http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/apr/apr-util/branches/1.2.x \ apr-util configure: error: no suitable apr found How do I get around this problem? BTW,will both client and server software be installed by compiling from source?

  • It's the ethernet 10/100 in LAN transfer faster than USB 1.0?

    - by dag729
I have an old laptop (PIII 800MHz, with 256 RAM) that I wish to use as my home server: it'll have to serve just two people, so I think that I'll be more than ok as for the RAM and the CPU. The issue is about data, because the internal hard disk is a 12GB, that is...ridicolous! I have more than 60GB of mixed storage and counting (images, videos and music) in an external usb hd. I could put the hd in my desktop pc just to serve the big files through ethernet or let it inside its usb box attached to the laptop. The question is: which of these solutions will be the fastest? USB 1.0 attached to the server (laptop) or internal hard disk serving files via 10/100 ethernet to the laptop on demand?

  • How can I check for a string match AND an empty file in the same if/then bash script statement?

    - by Mike B
I'm writing a simple bash script to do the following: 1) Check two files (foo1 and foo2). 2) If foo1 is different from foo2 and foo1 NOT blank, send an email. 3) If foo1 is the same as foo2... or foo1 is blank... do nothing. The blank condition is what's confusing me. Here's what I've got to start with: diff --brief <(sort ./foo1) <(sort ./foo2) >/dev/null comp_value=$? if [ $comp_value -ne 0 ] then mail -s "Alert" [email protected] <./alertfoo fi Obviously this doesn't check for blank contents. Any thoughts on how to do that?

  • Using remote station as original

    - by Neka
I have 2 computers with totally same Debian, config, apps and other stuff. One at work and another at home. It's inconvenient to maintain the same configuration on these stations - upgrading OS, sync configuration, etc. Is there the way to use my home station as "host", and such a "terminal" at work? As if i have one HDD on 2 computers, but must use they own resources like an videocard and another. Looks like i need some remote tool as VNC, but this is no sessional event, I need to use "terminal" comp like original all of the time.

  • Is it logical that file system acls would be corrupted in a way that adds permission for another user?

    - by wilbbe01
I was having issues on a shared hosting provider with the host's web server instance not serving some files. I asked the companies support about the issue and they responded with the results of getfacl on my home directory, and added the necessary line to allow their web server to obtain the necessary permissions. All is working happily now, but I noticed a line in the getfacl that was for what appeared to be another username to which I had no relation. I asked them about this and their response was that it was likely some minor corruption and that I could remove the unwanted line with the setfacl -x option. I know I never added the user to my home directory, and I also find it weird that that could truly happen due to corruption. So now that it is fixed I'm a little bit weary of whether or not they were trying to cover up a problem they accidentally gave someone permissions to my account, or if this kind of thing can really be corrupted in that way. Especially when that user is a real user on the same server. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  • Running Solr on VPS problem

    - by Camran
I have a VPS with Ubuntu OS. I run solr om my local machine (windows xp laptop) just fine. I have configured Jetty, and Solr just the same way as on my computer, but on the server. I have also downloaded the JRE and installed it on the server. However, whenever I try to run the start.jar file, the PuTTY terminal shows a bunch of text but gets stuck. I could pase the text here but it is very long, so unless somebody wants to see it I wont. Also, I cant view the solr admin page at all. Does anybody have experience in this kind of problem? Maybe java isn't correctly installed? It is a VPS so maybe installation is different. Thanks UPDATE: These are the last lines from the terminal, in other words, this is where it stops every time: INFO: [] webapp=null path=null params={event=firstSearcher&q=static+firstSearcher+warming+query+from+solrconfig.xml} hits=0 status=0 QTime=9 May 28, 2010 8:58:42 PM org.apache.solr.core.QuerySenderListener newSearcher INFO: QuerySenderListener done. • Help remembering name of boot CD (maybe it wasn't a live CD)

    - by daneee
I am struggling to remember the name of a boot CD I have since lost the disc for. It was great for cloning discs, and resetting passwords. It's NOT the UBCD4Win, and it defos wasn't Knoppix. I have checked the LiveCD list and can't seem to find it there by doing a 'sort by'. I seem to remember it was called something like GS Tools but that might be more or less completely wrong. It had an unusual but memorable name. Makes me wonder how I came across it in the first place!

  • how to check if something is in the queue of torque?

    - by kloop
I want to re-run some jobs that completed prematurely under torque. These jobs are run through .job scripts (using qsub). However, I don't want to re-run a job which is already in the queue. Given a script filename, how can I know whether it is already in torque's queue (using qstat?) or not? I prefer to do it programmatically, of course, so any oneliner that searches for a given script name would be great. I will note that I can grep submit_args in qstat -f, but I can't get it to display the whole script name when it is too long. This is crucial. EDIT: I managed to solve it using the following command: qstat -x | perl -pi -e 's/\<\//\n/g' | grep job$ | grep -v submit_args | perl -pi -e 's/Job_Id\>\<Job_Name\>//' works because all my scripts end in the string "job".

  • How do I debug an upstart job?

    - by Cerales
I have the following job in /etc/init/collector: start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [!2345] expect daemon exec /usr/bin/twistd -y /path/to/my/tac/file When I start the job with sudo service collector start, it hangs. If I ctrl-c and run initctl list, I see this: collector start/killed, process 616 I can't see an instance of the twistd daemon in ps, and the HTTP server it's supposed to be providing does not exist. I even tried this without 'expect daemon' and with a simple call to a one-line bash script using a script stanza, and it still doesn't work. I think I'm doing something very wrong. What could it be?

  • Getting PAM/user info into php - something like Net_Finger instead of a db?

    - by digitaltoast
I've got a very small user group who just need to login, upload, check and then move specific files to a different area when ready. Right now, I use the nginx PAM auth module to log them in against their unix accounts. As their login is their home directory, I've already got the info to send the uploads to the right area - one line of php and no database needed. But I'm maintaining a separate DB just so PHP can welcome them, grab their email and send them an email when processed. Yes, sure I could use nosql or sqlite instead so as to not need a whole mysql install. But it occurred to me that as I've got all these blank user fields for phone numbers I could populate with any data, that I could use something like php's Net_Finger. Which failed for me with: sudo pear install Net_Finger Starting to download Net_Finger-1.0.1.tgz (1,618 bytes) ....done: 1,618 bytes could not extract the package.xml file from "/build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download/Net_Finger-1.0.1.tgz" Download of "pear/Net_Finger" succeeded, but it is not a valid package archive Error: cannot download "pear/Net_Finger" At which point I thought I'd stop, and take a ServerFault reality check - is this a really bad/dangerous/stupid idea just to stop me having to maintain details in two places rather than one? It there a better way? Googling shows that it's not an oft-asked thing, so perhaps with good reason?

  • Why does my CentOS logrotate run at random times?

    - by Mike Pennington
    I put a logrotate configuration file in /etc/logrotate.d/ and expected the logs to rotate at a consistent time; however, they do not... log rotation times are seemingly random +/- one hour. Why are the log rotation start times random, and how can I change this? Informational: my logrotate config file looks like this... /opt/backups/network/*.conf { copytruncate rotate 30 daily create 644 root root dateext maxage 30 missingok notifempty compress delaycompress postrotate ## Create symbolic links in daily/ PATH=`/usr/bin/dirname $1`; FILE=`/bin/basename $1`; /bin/ln -s $1 $PATH/daily/$FILE endscript }

  • Website & Forum sharing the same login credentials ?

    - by Brian
I am going to be running a small site (100 hits a week maybe) and I am looking for a quick and easy way to share login information between the main website, a control panel (webmin, cpanel, or something), and the forum. One login needed to access any of the three. The website won't have use for the login, per say. But it will display "logged in" when you are on the website. Any custom solutions, any thoughts, logic, examples?

  • getting Thunderbird rescan imap folder

    - by asdmin
Since I got an external program (imapfilter) modifying my imap folder, thunderbird keeps loosing track of new messages. Messages are moved upon arrival in sub-folders, making Thunderbird unable keep tracking them - therefore I have no clue which folders to look for new messages, and newly created folders (even I subscribe them after creation) does not show up until I restart the mail client. Is there any extension or setting for Thunderbird which I could use to trigger re-scanning my folder tree? Please don't waste time on advices like restarting Thunderbird: takes a great amount of time, or "use Evolution (or any other mail client)", or use internal mail filters: they are not sophisticated enough or procmail/fetchmail: I'm arranging a remote imap server for good EXTENSION 1: even folders can be created in the background, without Thunderbird would know it has been created.

  • Prevent rmdir -p from traversing above a certain directory

    - by thepurplepixel
    I hacked together this script to rsync some files over ssh. The --remove-source-files option of rsync seems to remove the files it transfers, which is what I want. However, I also want the directories those files are placed in to be gone as well. The current part of the find command, -exec rmdir -p {} ; tries to remove the parent directory (in this case, /srv/torrents), but fails because it doesn't have the right permissions. What I'd like to do is stop rmdir from traversing above the directory find is run in, or find another solution to get rid of all the empty folders. I've thought of using some kind of loop with find and running rmdir without the -p switch, but I thought it wouldn't work out. Essentially, is there an alternative way to remove all the empty directories under the parent directory? Thanks in advance! #!/bin/bash HOST='<hostname>' USER='<username>' DIR='<destination directory>' SOURCE='/srv/torrents/' rsync -e "ssh -l $USER" --remove-source-files -h -4 -r --stats -m --progress -i $SOURCE $HOST:$DIR find $SOURCE -mindepth 1 -type d -empty -prune -exec rmdir -p \{\} \;

  • Tool to run same key strokes on multiple unix machines

    - by virtualvoid
I want to run the same commands on multiple machines, I know I can do this using ssh scripting or things like clusterssh, however I don't want to install anything on the server. (Don't have the rights) What I want is to just clone the keystrokes across multiple machines e.g. run cat /etc/oratab on one window and same is run on multiple windows e.g. in putty, is there a tool to do that from a windows client.
