  • I have a performance problem

    (copied from my wordpress blog). So start 95% of the performance calls that I receive. They usually continue something like: I have gathered some *stat data for you (eg the guds tool from Document 1285485.1), can you please root cause our problem? So, do you think you could? Neither can I, based on this my answer inevitably has to be "No". Given this kind of problem statement, I have no idea about the expectations, the boundary conditions, or even the application. The answer may as well be "Performance problems? Consult your local Doctor for Viagra". It's really not a lot to go on. So, What kind of problem description is going to allow me to start work on the issue that is being seen? I don't doubt that there really is an issue, it just needs to be pinned down somewhat. What behavior exactly are you expecting to see? Be specific and use business metrics. For example "run-time", "response-time" and "throughput". This helps us define exit criterea. Now, let's look at the system that is having problems. How is what you are seeing different? Use the same type of metrics. The answers to these two questions take us a long way towards being able to work a call. Even more helpful are answers to questions like Has this system ever worked to expectation? If so, when did it start exhibiting this behavior? Is the problem always present, or does it sometimes work to expectation? If it sometimes works to expectation, when are you seeing the problem? Is there any discernible pattern? Is the impact of the problem getting better, worse, or remaining constant? What kind of differences are there between when the system was performing to expectation and when it is not? Are there other machines where we could expect to see the same issue (eg similar usage and load), but are not? Again, differences? Once we start to gather information like this we start to build up a much clearer picture of exactly what we need to investigate, and what we need to achieve so that both you and me agree that the problem has been solved. Please help get that figure of poorly defined problem statements down from it's current 95% value.

    After one has generated many grid based puzzles like sudoku, kakuro or even plain crosswords and now one has to print them in a book. How does one make a pdf (book file) from them automatically. To explain the question better. One has the puzzle ready in computer format like ..35.6.89 for all nine rows. The dot being the empty cell. How does one convert then to a picture on a PDF page complete with box, automatically without doing them individually and then print a book from the pdf file. As can be seen there are other things also printed on the page all this is done automatically.

  • How to get my windows docs ; pics, mp3, and docs off an external usb hard drive (sata 3.5 enclosure)

    Back when I had windows 7, I cloned my internal hard drive to an enclosed external usb hard drive. I then formatted my internal hard drive and installed ubuntu 11.10 as my only OS. How do I migrate my files, pics, mp3's, and etc off the external drive and back to my internal drive which now only has ubuntu on it. (and why is this process not made easier?) I have tried logging in as the root user but I cannot find the external device. I have downloaded several different apps to manage files, usb sticks and etc. PLEASE HELP!!!

    I compiled GDB 7 on a Mac OS X Leopard system. When stepping through a C program, GDB fails to step through 'printf()' statements, which probably don't have associated debug information, and starts printing "Cannot find bounds of current function."   • Binary file email attachment problem

    Hi there, Using Python 3.1.2 I am having a problem sending binary attachment files (jpeg, pdf, etc.) - MIMEText attachments work fine. The code in question is as follows... for file in self.attachments: part = MIMEBase('application', "octet-stream") part.set_payload(open(file,"rb").read()) encoders.encode_base64(part) part.add_header('Content-Disposition', 'attachment; filename="%s"' % file) msg.attach(part) # msg is an instance of MIMEMultipart() server = smtplib.SMTP(host, port) server.login(username, password) server.sendmail(from_addr, all_recipients, msg.as_string()) However, way down in the calling-stack (see traceback below), it looks as though msg.as_string() has received an attachment which creates a payload of 'bytes' type instead of string. Has anyone any idea what might be causing the problem? Any help would be appreciated.   • Templates vs. coded HTML

    I have a web-app consisting of some html forms for maintaining some tables (SQlite, with CherryPy for web-server stuff). First I did it entirely 'the Python way', and generated html strings via. code, with common headers, footers, etc. defined as functions in a separate module. I also like the idea of templates, so I tried Jinja2, which I find quite developer-friendly. In the beginning I thought templates were the way to go, but that was when pages were simple. Once .css and .js files were introduced (not necessarily in the same folder as the .html files), and an ever-increasing number of {{...}} variables and {%...%} commands were introduced, things started getting messy at design-time, even though they looked great at run-time. Things got even more difficult when I needed additional javascript in the or sections. As far as I can see, the main advantages of using templates are: Non-dynamic elements of page can easily be viewed in browser during design. Except for {} placeholders, html is kept separate from python code. If your company has a web-page designer, they can still design without knowing Python. while some disadvantages are: {{}} delimiters visible when viewed at design-time in browser Associated .css and .js files have to be in same folder to see effects in browser at design-time. Data, variables, lists, etc., must be prepared in advanced and either declared globally or passed as parameters to render() function. So - when to use 'hard-coded' HTML, and when to use templates? I am not sure of the best way to go, so I would be interested to hear other developers' views. TIA, Alan

  • sIFR 3 rev 436 - copy link to clipboard

    This was originally a question, but is now a code enhancement, since it's a very minor (but useful) update. When heading (or other) text is used as a link with sIFR 3, you now get the two 'open link / open link in new window' options in the right-click flash context menu for the link. When I came across sIFR for the first time yesterday, I was wanting to copy a header (h2) link to the clipboard, on a site that used sIFR 2.x, and was frustrated that I couldn't. Thanks to the wonders of open source (and well written code), I can suggest the following enhancement to sIFR 3: [In the file flash/sIFR.as, find the section starting with the comment "// Have to set up menu items first!" through to ");" and replace with the following, then add font information to the .fla and export the swf as per the tutorial:] // Have to set up the menu items first! menuItems.push( new ContextMenuItem("Follow link", function() { getURL(sIFR.instance.primaryLink, sIFR.instance.primaryLinkTarget) }), new ContextMenuItem("Open link in new window", function() { getURL(sIFR.instance.primaryLink, "_blank") }), new ContextMenuItem("Copy link to clipboard", function() { System.setClipboard(sIFR.instance.primaryLink) }) ); Now I'm happy... :-) Alan.

  • .NET Embedded Manifest Crashes XP

    Hi, I am embedding a manifest in a .NET exe so that it can request elevated permissions in Vista and Windows 7. The manifest that I am using is as follows: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <assemblyIdentity version="1.0.0.0" name="ElevationTest" type="win32"/> <trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3"> <security> <requestedPrivileges> <requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator"/> </requestedPrivileges> </security> </trustInfo> </assembly> It works as expected in Vista and Windows 7 but crashes XP with the standard "... has encountered a problem and needs to close..." error. If I don't embed any manifest then it works as expected but will obviously not have the required permissions in Vista and Windows 7. What is a standard way of producing an exe that will function with the correct permissions in XP and Vista / Windows 7? Thanks, Alan

    I am using the php mailer class to send email via my scripts. The structure is as follows: $mail = new PHPMailer; $mail->IsSMTP(); // Set mailer to use SMTP $mail->Host = 'myserver.com'; // Specify main and backup server $mail->SMTPAuth = true; // Enable SMTP authentication $mail->Username = '[email protected]'; // SMTP username $mail->Password = 'user123'; // SMTP password $mail->SMTPSecure = 'pass123'; It seems to me to be a bit of a security hole having the mailbox credentials in plain view. So I thought I might put these in an external file outside of the web root. My question is how would I then assign the $mail object these values.   • Cannot Start Nginx Compiled from Source

    I am trying to compile Nginx from source based on the original compiled Nginx server running on my DigitalOcean server ( Ubuntu-14.04 64x ) but with a few extra modules. I can get everything installed smoothly but I can not get it to start. I am sure the ini is correct because I copied the original source off the current running Nginx server [ Even though I see that Nginx now adds the ini when compiling fron source ]. Below is the [ lengthy process ] that I am performing - add sorry but I wanted to be thorough for those who are in need of the info ]. Because I am a newB to Nginx, I am sure I am missing something or just have it all wrong. If you may look over what I have done and see if you spot anything I need/need to change, I will greatly appreciate it. Thnx! And now to start the server: service nginx start And this is where s#!+ hits the fan - Nada. I check to see if Nginx is running with service --status-all and its not. Also with nginx -V and its not installed??? I reboot the system too and still nothing. So I am not sure what is wrong here. The ini was copied over from the old server along with all the other config files after deleting the old files. When I opened the new compiled files, the nginx default data was present so I replaced them with my old original data prior to starting the new server for the first time. Also to be safe, I rm /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default and symlinked with ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/default /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default with no errors and I verified that the data was in the sites-enabled/default file. I don't think the server really/fully installed because of the nginx -V result: The program 'nginx' can be found in the following packages: * nginx-core * nginx-extras * nginx-full * nginx-light * nginx-naxsi Try: apt-get install <selected package> Do/should I apt-get install nginx-1.7.4 ??   • How do I troubleshoot a segfault in Ubuntu that occurs when typing a bogus command?

    We've got a production server running Ubuntu 11.10. We're encountering segfaults that appear under various conditions. The simplest reproducible case is when we login to an ssh session as our administrative user and enter a bogus command. You'd expect the standard "command not found" error message. Instead, we get a segfault in python. The user's default shell is /bin/bash. The system and/or this particular user's environment is suspect. Many people have touched this server over the past year, so I'm wondering if it is missing libraries, incorrectly installed packages, etc. I'm hoping that if we can understand what's going wrong in this case, it will help explain why we're getting segfaults in a couple of other scenarios.   • ESXI guests not using available CPU resources

    I have a VMWare ESXI 5.0.0 (it's a bit old, I know) host with three guest VMs on it. For reasons unknown, the guests will not use much of the availble CPU resources. I have all three guests in a single pool, with the hosts all configured to use the same amount of resource shares, so they're basically 33% each. The three guests are basically identically configured as far as their VM resources go. So the problem is, even when the guests are performing what should be very 'busy' activitites, such as at bootup, the actual host CPU consumed is something tiny, like 33mhz, when seen via vSphere console's "Virtual Machines" tab when viewing properties for the pool. And of course, the performance of the guest VMs is terrible. The host has plenty of CPU to spare. I've tried tinkering with individual guest VM resource settings; cranking up the reservation, etc. No matter. The guests just refuse to make use of the abundant CPU available to them, and insist on using a sliver of the available resources. Any suggestions? Update after reading various comments below Per the suggestions below, I did remove the guests from the application pool; this didn't make any difference. I do understand that the guests are not going to consume resources they do not need. I have tried to do a remote perfmon on the guest which is experiencing long boot times, but I cannot connect to the guest remotely with perfmon (guest is w2k8r2 server). Host graphs for CPU, Mem, Disk are basically flatlining; very little demand. Same is true for the guest stats; while the guest itself seems to be crawling, the guest resource graphing shows very little activity across CPU, Mem, Disk. Host is a Dell PowerEdge 2900, has 2 physical CPU,20gb RAM. (it's a test/dev environment using surplus gear) Guest1 has: VM ver. 7, 2vCPU, 4gb RAM, 140gb storage which lives on a RAID-5 array on the host. Guest2 has: VM ver. 7, 2vCPU, 4gb RAM, 140gb storage which lives on a RAID-5 array on the host. Guest3 has: VM ver. 7, 1vCPU, 2gb RAM, 2tb storage which lives on a RAID-5 ISCSI NAS box Perhaps I am making a false assumption that if a guest has a demand for CPU (e.g. Windows Task Manager shows 100% CPU), the host would supply the guest with more CPU (mem, disk) on demand. Another Update After checking the stats, it would appear that the host is indeed not busy at all, neither is the guest. I believe I have a good idea on the issue, though; a messed-up VMWare Tools install. The guest has VMware Tools on it, but the host says it does not. VMWare Tools refuses to uninstall, refuses to be upgraded, refuses to be recognized. While I cannot say with authority, this would appear to be something worth investigation. I do not know the origin of the guest itself, nor the specifics on the original VMWare Tools install. Following various bits of googling, I did come up with a few suggestions that went nowhere. To that end, I was going to delete this question, but was prompted not to do so since so many folks answered. My suspicion right now is; the problem truly is the guest; the guest is not making a demand on the host, and as a natural result, the host is treating the guest accordingly. My Final Update I am 99% certain the guest VM had something fundamentally wrong with it re VMWare Tools. I created a clone of a different VM with a near-identical OS config, but a properly working install of VMWare tools. The guest runs just great, and takes up it's allotment of resources when it needs to; e.g. it eats up about 850mhz CPU during startup, then ticks down to idle once the guest OS is stable.

  • How to prevent iCal from sending email

    For the past two years I have been using John Maisey's most excellent iCal Reply Checker to take control over iCal's aggressive notification emails. Sadly, it doesn't work in OS X 10.6. (John clearly states on his web site that it's for 10.4 and 10.5, so this is entirely my fault, not at all his.) Does anyone know another way to prevent iCal from sending mail? Thanks.

  • Can I upgrade the processor in my laptop (Satellite L455)?

    I have a Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 which is about three years old. The processor is currently an Intel Celeron 900. Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade this to a newer one? I have heard the Core 2 Duo T6600 is a compatible replacement for my processor on other brands of computers, and I know the two have the same socket type (PGA478). I mostly need to know if this or any other newer processors are compatible with the Satellite's motherboard.

Is there any method to (or tool that will) tell me why Apache is denying access? (local rule in httpd.conf, file permissions, etc. I'm not looking for help with a specific configuration, instead I'm looking for a way to have the computer tell me what's wrong with my system and/or configuration.

  • how to make man page not disappear on exit

    ...probably a silly question but I could not beat google into telling me the answer so posting here: I got 2 machines - Slackware 13 and Fedora 11. On the slack machine, when I use man I can scroll all the way to the bottom then exit man and the info stays in my terminal window (which I find very convenient as I can read it while typing the command in question, copy-paste the options, etc.). On fedora when I close man the man page info is gone. How can I configure man (or is it the terminal?) to not remove the man page info on exit?

    I customised my keyboard layout in 9.10 by editing the appropriate /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ file. After upgrading to 10.04 I noticed it had overwritten all my modifications, so I recovered the layout and overwrote the symbol file's base entry. Sadly KDE (and, presumably, the entire OS) seems to ignore the files altogether. The help files don't mention anything about modifying layouts anyway (and the layout switcher seems to be using setxkbmap, which uses the above path according to its man page), so I'm at a bit of a loss. Do I need to compile this into some other format somehow or how do I get it to work?
