  If you've read this blog before, you probably know that Oracle desktop virtualization is used to demonstrate Oracle Applications at many different trade shows. This week, the Oracle desktop team is at DIA2012 in Philadelphia, PA. The DIA conference is a large event, hosting about 7,000 professionals in the pharmaceutical, bio technology, and medical device fields. Healthcare and associated fields are leveraging desktop virtualization because the model is a natural fit due to their high security requirements.   Happy Friday, everyone! Following up on yesterday's post about Oracle VM VirtualBox being selected as the best virtualization solution for 2012 by the readers of Linux Journal, our Friday tip is about that very cool piece of software: Question: How do I move a VM from one machine to another with Oracle VM VirtualBox? Answer by Andy Hall, Product Management Director, Oracle Desktop Virtualization: There are a number of ways to do this, with pros and cons for each. The most reliable approach is to Export and Import virtual machines: From the VirtualBox manager, simply use the File…Export appliance menu and follow the wizard's lead. Move the resulting file(s) to the destination machine; and Import the VM into VirtualBox. This method will take longer and use more disk space than other methods because the configuration files and virtual hard drives are converted into an industry standard format (.ova or .ovf). But an advantage of this approach is that the creator of the virtual appliance can add a license which the importer will see and click-to-accept at import time. This is especially useful for ISVs looking to deliver pre-built, configured and tested appliances to their customers and prospects. Thanks Andy! • Perth's ADF Community Event now an open invite

  Yesterday saw the next ADF Community Event in Perth, and as promised we grew from 15 to 25 attendees (which is going to cause a bit of a problem soon if we keep growing as we're going to run out of powerpoints for laptops). This bimonthly enjoyed presentations from Matthew Carrigy from the Dept of Finance WA on the ADF UI Shell, a small presentation from me about how Fusion Apps uses ADF, and a hands on based on programatically extending ADF BC to call external web services.  For Matt, his first presentation to a user group, with two live demos, all kudos to him for making it look smooth (for the record I hate live demos, I always break something) - thank you Matt! We've already lined up our speakers for the next event in November, and will be inviting yet more customers to this event.  However the event will now move to an open invite, so if you'd like your staff to attend please let me know by emailing chris DOT muir AT oracle DOT com. Alternatively I've had a fair few requests now for an "Intro to ADF" 1 day session so I'll consider this soon.  Certainly if you're interested let me know as this will help organize the event earlier rather than later.

• Friday Tips #6, Part 2

  Here is a question about updating Oracle VM: Question: How can I perform Oracle VM 3 server updates from Oracle VM Manager? Answer by Gregory King, Principal Best Practices Consultant, Oracle VM Product Management: Server Update Manager is a built-in feature of the Oracle VM Manager. Basically, Server Update Manager automatically configures YUM updates on all the Oracle VM Servers, pointing each to our Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) update channel for Oracle VM. The servers periodically check with our Oracle YUM repository and notify the Oracle VM Manager that an update is available for each server. Actual server updates must be triggered by the Oracle VM administrator – they are not executed automatically. At this point, you can use the Oracle VM Manager to put a server into maintenance mode which live migrates all the running Oracle VM Guests to other Oracle VM Servers in the server pool. Once all the Oracle VM Guests have been migrated, the Oracle VM administrator can trigger the update on the server. The entire process is documented in the Installation and Upgrade Guide of Oracle VM Documentation so I won’t spend time detailing the steps. However, configuring the Server Update Manager is exceedingly simple. Simply navigate to the Tools and Resources tab in the Oracle VM Manager, select the link for Server Update Manager and ensure the following values are added to the text boxes as shown in the illustration below: YUM Base URL: http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleVM/OVM3/latest/x86_64 YUM GPG Key: file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle Every server in the pool will be automatically configured for YUM updates once you choose the Apply button. • Sum and chart in excel

  I have data like the following: Both Hour and Count are columns in an excel file. Hour Count 17 79 18 122 19 123 20 142 21 150 22 78 23 15 13 33 14 33 15 40 16 33 17 56 18 46 19 35 20 67 21 65 22 45 23 36 What I want is to create a chart that shows over a period of 1 to 24 (hours) the total count. What's the easiest way to do this. The chart should have a horizontal axis that runs from 1 to 24; and a vertical axis that goes from 0 on up. In the case above the values should be combined like: 1 - 0 2 - 0 3 - 0 4 - 0 5 - 0 6 - 0 7 - 0 8 - 0 9 - 0 10 - 0 11 - 0 12 - 0 13 - 33 14 - 33 15 - 40 16 - 33 17 - 135 18 - 168 19 - 158 20 - 209 21 - 215 22 - 123 23 - 51 24 - 0

• Appcrash and possible malware

  First off, I'm running MS Intune Endpoint Protection. It is completely up to date. On 10/25 @ 11:53PM I came across a site that caused Intune to freak out: Microsoft Antimalware has detected malware or other potentially unwanted software. • Best way to fix security problems caused by windows updates?

  I have a laptop running Windows 7 32-bit. Last nights security updates caused my logitech mouse to stop working (specifically, it caused several USB ports to stop altogether). After reviewing the system event log I found that the IPBusEnum component was failing due to an activation security error. A little more research and I found that this was caused by the TrustedInstaller replacing the security permissions on those keys and generally mucking them up. To fix this I had to open regedit, take ownership of ALL the keys related to IPBusEnum and force it to use the inherited permissions from the tree. Is there a better way to fix this when MS screws up the updates? I would hate to have to walk around to a number of machines and manually fix the registry key security settings.

• Enable FTP Publishing on IIS7?

  I've followed the steps in http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/303/adding-ftp-to-a-web-site/ However, when I get to the part where it says to click "add ftp publishing to website", the option is not visible in the IIS management console. I've verified that the "FTP Publishing Service" is installed in the server manager, and I can see it running in the services applet and via netstat -a. Suggestions?

• Hypervisor load on local disks

  Hi, What is the I/O load on the local disk system for the host OS in XenServer ? I can't find this info anywhere. As we have a SAN for the VMs themselves, can we get away with cheap controller / SATA disk in raid-1 for the hypervisor ? We won't boot from the SAN as it seems prone to problems. Thanks, Chris

• Programmer configuring a new network

  I'm in the process of expanding my home network from a couple of laptops on a wireless Verizon FiOS router to include: Linksys 24-port switch Cisco Pix 515 Cisco 3640 router One new development desktop and three new machines to act as a db server, web server and a backup system. My company is moving offices and we've decommissioned some older hardware, which I was able to pick up for the cost of the labor to move it home from the office. The benefits to working with dedicated web and db servers are very valuable to me. I know very little about network topology, other than that everything plugs into the switch, which then plugs into the cheap Verizon router. (Verizon provides a coax connection that the router must translate into Ethernet before I can use it with any of this equipment). Questions: What is the recommended topology for this equipment? Verizon router - Pix - 3600 - switch? Is the 3600 even necessary or desirable? The Verizon router has one WAN port and 4 client ports, all 10/100. Is there any performance benefit at all to wiring multiple connections from the verizon router to the switch, assuming I don't use the Pix? Should I use the Pix? Software firewalls are a pain, and seem silly if I have a device like this lying around. Anything else I should know? Am I wasting my time with this? I also obtained a 7 foot rack, shelves, patch panels, UPS, patch panels, etc, which are going into a conveniently air conditioned closet. All constructive advice appreciated.

• BSOD: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT and IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

  I built a desktop about a year ago that has, until a few weeks ago, been running without a hitch using Windows 7 Ultimate. Recently, the PC started occasionally rebooting with a blue screen indicating a "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" error. Also, I've seen at least once the error IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I seem to remember temporarily connecting an internal DVD burner about the same time this happened. I burned a DVD for another machine and promptly removed the drive. Yesterday, I reformatted the drive and installed Win7 Ultimate x64. During the first install, the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT bluescreen reared its ugly head again. A second install attempt completed with no errors. The fact that this error happened during a clean install leads me to believe that this is not a driver or OS issue. I also ran the memory diagnostic from the Win7 32-bit install DVD. It completed both passes with no errors. Periodically, the screen will flicker, as if explorer or the video are resetting. In the event log, I see a series of 8 or so errors indicating that some services unexpectedly stopped, and were apparently reset. These include an HID service and some others (I don't have a list in front of me). The PC is a Phenom X2 3 Ghz with a 500GB Seagate drive, 4GB of Corsair XMS2 cm2x2048-6400c5c. Anyone know what would suddenly cause a couple of sticks of RAM to go bad?

• Firefox appending .xls extension to .xlsx files

  We are serving files with the .xlsx (excel 2007/2010) extension. IE, Chrome, Safari all download the file and open excel just fine. Firefox is being stupid. For some reason it's appending .xls to the extension. I found this: https://support.mozilla.com/bs/questions/758363 However, the instructions weren't very specific and completely unclear to me. How can I tell Firefox not to screw with the file extension? Thanks,

• Google Chrome on Mac OS X, full screen option is greyed out, why?

  When I first installed Chrome the menu option for "full screen" was enabled and worked, but for the last few months is been greyed out/disabled. Is it just me or perhaps there is a bug which is why its disabled? I tried deleting the installed version and downloading a new copy, to no avail - but perhaps there is a setting in my local preferences that could be disabling it. Thanks in advance, Chris

• Win7 Credential manager and accessing SQL Server from outside of the domain

  My SQL Server is set to use windows authentication. If I am connected to the domain directly from my Win7 Ultimate x64 machine, SQL Management Studio (SSMS) will let me authenticate with Windows authentication. However, if I am connected via the VPN (from a different machine that is not joined to the domain), it won't. If I start SSMS with the following command line: C:\Windows\system32>runas /netonly /user:domainname\username "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL...\ssms.exe" then connecting to the SQL Server (which is in the domain) with Windows Authentication works fine. I'd like to save these credentials so that I don't have to launch SSMS from the command line, or modify the shortcut. I know I can use the SysInternals ShellRunAs extension to do this, but I again have to enter my domain username and password each time, and shift+right-click to see that menu option. The Windows Credential Manager seems designed to solve this problem, and works for network shares. However, it doesn't seem to work for SSMS. Any suggestions? I've tried using the /savecred option with runas to create the necessary credentials, but that appears to be incompatible with the /netonly option. Running the above command line with the addition of /savecred just displays the runas help screen. Grrr. Argh.

• Problems with Windows 7 restore

  My WD raptor 150 failed with a nice clicking noise. So, I picked up a velociraptor 300 and popped it in. I had windows set to do a full system backup nightly, so I figured the recovery ought to go easily. Well, it isn't. It is currently stuck on a screen that says: "Windows is restoring your computer from the system image. This might take from a few minutes to a few hours" Below that is a rather large progress meter with maybe the first block filled in. Below that is a message that says "Restoring disk (C:)..." It's been that way for over an hour. The first time around, I gave up after 2 hours. I then booted into the system recovery options and went to a command prompt and ran a chkdsk on the new drive. It showed several file inconsistencies and not much else. I ran a chkdsk /f on it and tried again... Which is where I'm at now. I can't see that the restore process should take this long before. Any ideas? UPDATE After 10 hours, it's still on "Restoring disk (C:)" and the progress meter is at roughly 5%. I'm guessing at the 5% as there isn't an actual number or anything else that I can look at showing what it's actually doing. The backup contains roughly 120GB of data. How slow is windows restore?

• IIS 7.5 - how to get?

  My servers are currently running IIS 7 (windows 2008). Is there any way to get IIS 7.5 without upgrading to 2008 R2? The reason I ask is that they are 32 bit servers and there is no upgrade path from 32 bit 2008 to 2008 R2.

• vmware windows7 professional changing ip addresses

  is there a way to fix your windows 7 professional guest host os ipaddress so it does not change every time you startup? I am currently using NAT for networking and would like to remain using this networking method if possible. • How can I determine whether an Antivirus product is installed?

  We have a large installation with over 15,000 machines. They are supposed to have a version of Trend Micro installed; however, we don't know that for sure. These are all Windows boxes which includes XP with various SP levels, Vista both RTM and SP1, and several 2000 and 2003 servers. How can I determine: Whether ANY AV product is installed? What version of the product is installed? What version of the pattern file is on the box? Ideas? Thanks,

• Where can I go to learn how to read a sql server execution plan?

  I'm looking for resources that can teach me how to properly read a sql server execution plan. I'm a long time developer, with tons of sql server experience, but I've never really learned how to really understand what an execution plan is saying to me. I guess I'm looking for links, books, anything that can describe things like whether a clustered index scan is good or bad along with examples on how to fix issues.

• 100% uptime for a web application

  We received an interesting "requirement" from a client today. They want 100% uptime with off-site failover on a web application. From our web application's viewpoint, this isn't an issue. It was designed to be able to scale out across multiple database servers, etc. However, from a networking issue I just can't seem to figure out how to make it work. In a nutshell, the application will live on servers within the client's network. It is accessed by both internal and external people. They want us to maintain an off-site copy of the system that in the event of a serious failure at their premises would immediately pick up and take over. Now we know there is absolutely no way to resolve it for internal people (carrier pigeon?), but they want the external users to not even notice. Quite frankly, I haven't the foggiest idea of how this might be possible. It seems that if they lose Internet connectivity then we would have to do a DNS change to forward traffic to the external machines... Which, of course, takes time. Ideas? UPDATE I had a discussion with the client today and they clarified on the issue. They stuck by the 100% number, saying the application should stay active even in the event of a flood. However, that requirement only kicks in if we host it for them. They said they would handle the uptime requirement if the application lives entirely on their servers. You can guess my response.

• Using SQL Server profiler from 2008 against R2 database

  On my dev machine I have the management studio tools installed from SQL Server 2008. However, one of the sql server boxes I need to profile against is running R2. Because of this, when I start the profiler and connect to that server all of the templates are gone. If I go to Edit the templates, the R2 server type isn't available as an option. Do I have to upgrade my local toolset to R2 or is there some other way around this? Note, that if I create a template and save it the next time I connect to the server that saved template isn't available.

• Create VPN between windows and sonic wall

  I'm trying to establish a VPN connection between our Windows 2008 R2 server and a client's SonicWall device. The problem is, I'm not entirely sure where to start. I thought I could just add it to RRAS but this doesn't appear to work (times out), I'm not entirely sure I did that right anyway. My server is hosted on an EC2 instance if that matters. My question then is how should I go about establishing this type of connection?

• L2TP Site to Site VPN issues

  I have a windows 2008 r2 server that needs to establish a VPN connection to a remote VPN server. We're using the L2TP protocol with a pre-shared key. I initially used the New Demand Dial interface wizard. Then I went into properties on the interface and set the type of VPn to L2TP/IPSec and put the key under the advanced settings. The error I received when attempting to connect is: An error occured during connection of the interface. A Demand Dial Router attempted to connect over a port that was reserved for Remote Access Clients only.
