  • What to do with someone who can only use "the one true language"?

    - by Rob Wells
    G'day, How do you work with someone when they haven't been able to see that there is a range of other languages out there beyond "The One True Path"? I mean someone who hasn't grown up to realise that the modern software professional has a range of tools in his toolbox. Someone who has a well-equipped toolbox and then selects the best tool for the job at hand. The person who's knee jerk reaction is, for example, "We must do this is C++!" "Everything must be done in C++!" What's the best approach for these people? How do you open them up to the fact that "not everything is a nail." cheers,

  • Where and why JVM checks that the return type of entry method main(String args[]) is void and not an

    - by akjain
    I will try to answer both, please correct me if I am wrong: Where: If a static method is being called using Classname.method() or using reflection then it doesn’t matter even if you change the return type of the calling method, the same method will still be called. So JVM probably checks this in one of the native methods of jvm.cpp methodHandle m (THREAD, init_klass-find_method(vmSymbols::object_initializer_name(), vmSymbols::void_method_signature())); if (m.is_null()) { ------ THROW_MSG_0 ……….. Why: Although it’s of useless to return a value from main, as java does not do anything with it but if we try to change the return type of main to int for example, JVM throws public static int main(String[] args) { return 1; } java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main Exception in thread "main" So may be Java mandates the use of same signature for entry method main() to maintain a symmetry in all Java programs written.

  • I am getting error when using Attributes in Rcpp and have RcppArmadillo code

    - by howard123
    I am trying to create a package with RcppArmadillo. The code uses the new attributes methodology of Rcpp. The sourceCpp works fine and compiles the code, but when I build a package I get errors when I use RcppArmadillo code. Without the RcppArmadillo code and using regulare C++, I do not get these errors. The C++ code (it is essentially the fastLm sample code) is: // [[Rcpp::depends(RcppArmadillo)]] #include <Rcpp.h> #include <RcppArmadillo.h> using namespace Rcpp; // [[Rcpp::depends(RcppArmadillo)]] #include <RcppArmadillo.h> // [[Rcpp::export]] List fastLm(NumericVector yr, NumericMatrix Xr) { int n = Xr.nrow(), k = Xr.ncol(); arma::mat X(Xr.begin(), n, k, false); arma::colvec y(yr.begin(), yr.size(), false); arma::colvec coef = arma::solve(X, y); arma::colvec resid = y - X*coef; double sig2 = arma::as_scalar(arma::trans(resid)*resid/(n-k)); arma::colvec stderrest = arma::sqrt( sig2 * arma::diagvec( arma::inv(arma::trans(X)*X)) ); return List::create(Named("coefficients") = coef, Named("stderr") = stderrest); } Here is the compilation error, after I execute "R   • Compiling C++ code with mingw under 12.04

    - by golemit
    I tried to setting up compiling of the C++ projects under my Ubuntu 12.04 by mingw with QT libraries. The idea was to get executable independent from variations of target Windows versions and development environments of my colleagues. It was successfully implemented under OpenSuse 12.2 with mingw32 and some additional libraries including mingw32-libqt4 and some others. Fine. However when trying to do the same under Ubuntu 12.04 with mingw-w64 including latest libraries QT-4.8.3 copied from Windows there were always errors. No luck. The typical errors in these attempts can be seen in attachments. The commands used: qmake -spec /path_to_my_conf/win32-x-g++ my_project.pro make Can someone give a hint of the problem source? I would appreciate a good advice. • Usage of static analysis tools - with Clear Case/Quest

    - by boyd4715
    We are in the process of defining our software development process and wanted to get some feed back from the group about this topic. Our team is spread out - US, Canada and India - and I would like to put into place some simple standard rules that all teams will apply to their code. We make use of Clear Case/Quest and RAD I have been looking at PMD, CPP, checkstyle and FindBugs as a start. My thought is to just put these into ANT and have the developers run these manually. I realize doing this you have to have some trust in that each developer will do this. The other thought is to add in some builders in to the IDE which would run a subset of the rules (keep the build process light) and then add another set (heavy) when they check in the code. Some other ideals is to make use of something like Cruse Control and have it set up to run these static analysis tools along with the unit test when ever Clear Case/Quest is idle. Wondering if others have done this and if it was successfully or can provide lessons learned.

  • How to access webbrowser object on this code? C++

    - by extintor
    I found this example http://www.mvps.org/user32/webhost.cab that host an Internet Explorer WebBrowser object, and it uses this code to access the object void webhostwnd::CreateEmbeddedWebControl(void) { OleCreate(CLSID_WebBrowser,IID_IOleObject,OLERENDER_DRAW,0,&site,&storage,(void**)&mpWebObject); mpWebObject->SetHostNames(L"Web Host",L"Web View"); // I have no idea why this is necessary. remark it out and everything works perfectly. How could I achieve this?

  • Error compiling / linking e text editor on Linux

    The code compiles without too much complaint, but the last step fails with the error below. There is some discussion about it on the e forum, but still no answer. • make include directive and dependency generation with -MM

    - by Robert S. Barnes
    I want a build rule to be triggered by an include directive if the target of the include is out of date or doesn't exist. Currently the makefile looks like this: program_NAME := wget++ program_H_SRCS := $(wildcard *.h) program_CXX_SRCS := $(wildcard *.cpp) program_CXX_OBJS := ${program_CXX_SRCS:.cpp=.o} program_OBJS := $(program_CXX_OBJS) DEPS = make.deps .PHONY: all clean distclean all: $(program_NAME) $(DEPS) $(program_NAME): $(program_OBJS) $(LINK.cc) $(program_OBJS) -o $(program_NAME) clean: @- $(RM) $(program_NAME) @- $(RM) $(program_OBJS) @- $(RM) make.deps distclean: clean make.deps: $(program_CXX_SRCS) $(program_H_SRCS) $(CXX) $(CPPFLAGS) -MM $(program_CXX_SRCS) > make.deps include $(DEPS) The problem is that it seems like the include directive is executing before the rule to build make.deps which effectively means make either getting no dependency list if make.deps doesn't exist or always getting the make.deps from the previous build and not the current one. For example: $ make clean $ make makefile:32: make.deps: No such file or directory g++ -MM addrCache.cpp connCache.cpp httpClient.cpp wget++.cpp > make.deps g++ -c -o addrCache.o addrCache.cpp g++ -c -o connCache.o connCache.cpp g++ -c -o httpClient.o httpClient.cpp g++ -c -o wget++.o wget++.cpp g++ addrCache.o connCache.o httpClient.o wget++.o -o wget++

  • Problem compiling c++ in CodeGear

    - by Carlos
    I have written a C++ program for a University assignment. I used Netbeans 6.8 running on my Mac and the code runs smoothly, no warnings, errors or problems/bugs. However when compiling and running on a Windows computer using CodeGear RAD Studio 2009 (C++ Builder) am getting several errors. [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(51): E2094 'operator<<' not implemented in type 'ostream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(62): E2093 'operator==' not implemented in type 'string' for arguments of the same type [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(67): E2093 'operator==' not implemented in type 'string' for arguments of the same type [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(112): E2093 'operator==' not implemented in type 'string' for arguments of the same type [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(121): E2094 'operator<<' not implemented in type 'ostream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(130): E2093 'operator==' not implemented in type 'string' for arguments of the same type [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(133): E2094 'operator<<' not implemented in type 'ostream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(139): E2094 'operator<<' not implemented in type 'ostream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(153): E2094 'operator<<' not implemented in type 'fstream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(199): E2094 'operator>>' not implemented in type 'fstream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(219): E2094 'operator>>' not implemented in type 'istream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(231): E2094 'operator>>' not implemented in type 'istream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(240): E2094 'operator>>' not implemented in type 'istream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(262): E2094 'operator>>' not implemented in type 'istream' for arguments of type 'string' [BCC32 Error] main.cpp(264): E2094 'operator>>' not implemented in type 'istream' for arguments of type 'string' These are the header files am using #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <cmath> #include <stdio> #include <windows> //I added this one just to check and still does not work (I didnt have it on Netbeans/Mac) using namespace std; Any ideas what is producing the errors and how can I fix it?

  • Does multiple cpp files correspond to multiple compilation units?

    Hello All, Suppose, we have a big Class. and we don't want to break it. In order to maintain code suppose we have created a multiple example1.cpp, example2.cpp, example3.cpp files for single example.h file for class cexample. Does this correspond to multiple compilations units? What is the best approach to handle such big classes? Any suggestions and comments are appreciated. Thank you, RAHUL

  • Why is it that I can include a header file in multiple cpp files that contains const int and not have a compiler error?

    - by tree
    Let's assume that I have files a.cpp b.cpp and file c.h. Both of the cpp files include the c.h file. The header file contains a bunch of const int definitions and when I compile them I get no errors and yet I can access those const as if they were global variables. So the question, why don't I get any compilation errors if I have multiple const definitions as well as these const int's having global-like scope?

  • Using sem_t in a Qt Project

    - by thauburger
    Hi everyone, I'm working on a simulation in Qt (C++), and would like to make use of a Semaphore wrapper class I made for the sem_t type. Although I am including semaphore.h in my wrapper class, running qmake provides the following error: 'sem_t does not name a type' I believe this is a library/linking error, since I can compile the class without problems from the command line. I've read that you can specify external libraries to include during compilation. However, I'm a) not sure how to do this in the project file, and b) not sure which library to include in order to access semaphore.h. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom Here's the wrapper class for reference: Semaphore.h #ifndef SEMAPHORE_H #define SEMAPHORE_H #include <semaphore.h> class Semaphore { public: Semaphore(int initialValue = 1); int getValue(); void wait(); void post(); private: sem_t mSemaphore; }; #endif Semaphore.cpp #include "Semaphore.h" Semaphore::Semaphore(int initialValue) { sem_init(&mSemaphore, 0, initialValue); } int Semaphore::getValue() { int value; sem_getvalue(&mSemaphore, &value); return value; } void Semaphore::wait() { sem_wait(&mSemaphore); } void Semaphore::post() { sem_post(&mSemaphore); } And, the QT Project File: TARGET = RestaurantSimulation TEMPLATE = app QT += SOURCES += main.cpp \ RestaurantGUI.cpp \ RestaurantSetup.cpp \ WidgetManager.cpp \ RestaurantView.cpp \ Table.cpp \ GUIFood.cpp \ GUIItem.cpp \ GUICustomer.cpp \ GUIWaiter.cpp \ Semaphore.cpp HEADERS += RestaurantGUI.h \ RestaurantSetup.h \ WidgetManager.h \ RestaurantView.h \ Table.h \ GUIFood.h \ GUIItem.h \ GUICustomer.h \ GUIWaiter.h \ Semaphore.h FORMS += RestaurantSetup.ui LIBS += Full Compiler Output: g++ -c -pipe -g -gdwarf-2 -arch i386 -Wall -W -DQT_GUI_LIB -DQT_CORE_LIB -DQT_SHARED - I/usr/local/Qt4.6/mkspecs/macx-g++ -I. - I/Library/Frameworks/QtCore.framework/Versions/4/Headers -I/usr/include/QtCore - I/Library/Frameworks/QtGui.framework/Versions/4/Headers -I/usr/include/QtGui - I/usr/include -I. -I. -F/Library/Frameworks -o main.o main.cpp In file included from RestaurantGUI.h:10, from main.cpp:2: Semaphore.h:14: error: 'sem_t' does not name a type make: *** [main.o] Error 1 make: Leaving directory `/Users/thauburger/Desktop/RestaurantSimulation' Exited with code 2.   • OSX / Kernel extensions: problem locating a driver (that extends IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00)

    - by LG
    Hi, I'm implementing a driver that extends IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00 as I need to send custom SCSI commands to a device. I'm following the VendorSpecificType00 and SimpleUserClient examples and http://wagerlabs.com/writing-a-mac-osx-usb-device-driver-that-impl as an example. I built my kernel extension and it loads fine with kextload and it shows up in kextstat. The problem is that I can't locate it in my user space code. Here's the important (I think) part of: my driver code: #define super IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00 OSDefineMetaClassAndStructors(com_mycompany_driver_Foo, IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00) my user client code: #define super IOUserClient OSDefineMetaClassAndStructors(com_mycompany_driver_FooUserClient, IOUserClient) the plist: CFBundleIdentifier -> com.mycompany.driver.Foo IOCLass -> com_mycompany_driver_Foo IOUserClientClass -> com_mycompany_driver_FooUserClient IOProviderClass -> IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceNub Here's how I try to locate the driver in my user space code (similar to SimpleUserClient): dictRef = IOServiceMatching("com_mycompany_driver_Foo"); kernResult = IOServiceGetMatchingServices(kIOMasterPortDefault, dictRef, &iterator); When I execute the code, iterator is 0. I noticed that in the VendorSpecificType00 code, the localization of the driver is done differently: dictRef = IOServiceMatching("IOBlockStorageServices"); kr = IOServiceGetMatchingServices(kIOMasterPortDefault, dictRef, &iter); while ((service = IOIteratorNext(iter))) { io_registry_entry_t parent; kr = IORegistryEntryGetParentEntry(service, kIOServicePlane, &parent); ... // We're only interested in the parent object if it's our driver class. if (IOObjectConformsTo(parent, "com_apple_dts_driver_VendorSpecificType00")) { I tried doing that but it didn't work either. Thanks for reading and your help, -L

  • Negative execution time

    - by FinalArt2005
    Hello, I wrote a little program that solves 49151 sudoku's within an hour for an assignment, but we had to time it. I thought I'd just let it run and then check the execution time, but it says -1536.087 s. I'm guessing it has to do with the timer being some signed dataype or something, but I have no idea what datatype is used for the timer in the console (code::blocks console, I'm not sure if this is actually a separate console, or just a runner that runs the terminal from the local operating system), so I can't check what the real time was. I'd rather not run this again with some coded timer within my program, since I'd like to be able to use my pc again now. Anybody have any idea what this time could be? It should be somewhere between 40 and 50 minutes, so between 2400 and 3000 seconds. Regards, Erik

  • Why did this work with Visual C++, but not with gcc?

    - by Carlos Nunez
    I've been working on a senior project for the last several months now, and a major sticking point in our team's development process has been dealing wtih rifts between Visual-C++ and gcc. (Yes, I know we all should have had the same development environment.) Things are about finished up at this point, but I ran into a moderate bug just today that had me wondering whether Visual-C++ is easier on newbies (like me) by design. In one of my headers, there is a function that relies on strtok to chop up a string, do some comparisons and return a string with a similar format. It works a little something like the following: int main() { string a, b, c; //Do stuff with a and b. c = get_string(a,b); } string get_string(string a, string b) { const char * a_ch, b_ch; a_ch = strtok(a.c_str(),","); b_ch = strtok(b.c_str(),","); } strtok is infamous for being great at tokenizing, but equally great at destroying the original string to be tokenized. Thus, when I compiled this with gcc and tried to do anything with a or b, I got unexpected behavior, since the separator used was completely removed in the string. Here's an example in case I'm unclear; if I set a = "Jim,Bob,Mary" and b="Grace,Soo,Hyun", they would be defined as a="JimBobMary" and b="GraceSooHyun" instead of staying the same like I wanted. However, when I compiled this under Visual C++, I got back the original strings and the program executed fine. I tried dynamically allocating memory to the strings and copying them the "standard" way, but the only way that worked was using malloc() and free(), which I hear is discouraged in C++. While I'm curious about that, the real question I have is this: Why did the program work when compiled in VC++, but not with gcc? (This is one of many conflicts that I experienced while trying to make the code cross-platform.) Thanks in advance! -Carlos Nunez

  • How, exactly, does the double-stringize trick work?

    - by Peter Hosey
    At least some C preprocessors let you stringize the value of a macro, rather than its name, by passing it through one function-like macro to another that stringizes it: #define STR1(x) #x #define STR2(x) STR1(x) #define THE_ANSWER 42 #define THE_ANSWER_STR STR2(THE_ANSWER) /* "42" */ Example use cases here. This does work, at least in GCC and Clang (both with -std=c99), but I'm not sure how it works in C-standard terms. Is this behavior guaranteed by C99? If so, how does C99 guarantee it? If not, at what point does the behavior go from C-defined to GCC-defined?

  • CoInternetIsFeatureEnabled in Delphi2010

    - by Elias
    Hello, I am trying to deactivate the annoying sound when clicking a link in WebBrowser control, WITHOUT changing the user registry. I've found documentation that this can be done through CoInternetIsFeatureEnabled, also explained here. But i have no idea how to implement it on Delphi 2010, since i am getting "Undeclared Identifier" error after including URLMon unit into the project and not much documentation out there. Any ideas?

  • What are the lengths/limits C preprocessor as a language creation tool? Where can I learn more about

    - by Weston C
    In his FAQ @ http://www2.research.att.com/~bs/bs_faq.html#bootstrapping, Bjarne Stroustrup says: To build [Cfront, the first C++ compiler], I first used C to write a "C with Classes"-to-C preprocessor. "C with Classes" was a C dialect that became the immediate ancestor to C++... I then wrote the first version of Cfront in "C with Classes". When I read this, it piqued my interest in the C preprocessor. I'd seen its macro capabilities as suitable for simplifying common expressions but hadn't thought about its ability to significantly add to syntax and semantics on the level that I imagine bringing classes to C took. So now I have a couple of questions on my mind: 1) Are there other examples of this approach to bootstrapping a language off of C? 2) Is the source to Stroustrup's original work available anywhere? 3) Where could I learn more about the specifics of utilizing this technique? 4) What are the lengths/limits of that approach? Could one, say, create a set of preprocessor macros that let someone write in something significantly Lisp/Scheme like?
