  • Are there cloud network drives that let users lock files or mark them as "in use"?

    - by Brandon Craig Rhodes
Having spent several hours reading about the features and limitations of services like DropBox and Jungle Disk and the hundreds of competitors they seem to have (as though everyone with an AWS account these days goes ahead and writes a file sharing application just for fun), I have yet to find one that would let a team of people at a small business collaborate without stepping all over each other's toes. At a small business there are often many small documents per project — estimates, contracts, project plans, budgets — and team members frequently have to open and edit them, with all sorts of problems happening if two people edit a file at once. Even if a sharing service is smart enough to keep both versions of the file created, most small-business software (like word processors, spreadsheets, estimating software, or billing systems) has no way to compare — much less to merge! — the changes in two rival versions of a file that two people edited at the same time without each other's knowledge. So, my question: are their cloud-based file sharing solutions that not only provide a virtual network drive that people can access, but that also let users lock files — even if it's not a real lock but just a flag or indicator — that could possibly prevent remote workers from both editing the same file at once? Having one person wait for another person to finish editing is a very, very small inconvenience compared to the hour or more than it can take to compare two estimates by hand until you find and resolve the rival changes. Given this fact, I am surprised that almost none of the popular file sharing solutions seem to recognize this problem and provide some solution! Does anyone know of a service that does?

  • SolidQ Journal - free SQL goodness for February

    - by Greg Low
The SolidQ Journal for February just made it out by the end of February 28th. But again, it's great to see the content appearing. I've included the second part of the article on controlling the execution context of stored procedures. The first part was in December. Also this month, along with Fernando Guerrero's editorial, Analysis Services guru Craig Utley has written about aggregations, Herbert Albert and Gianluca Holz have continued their double-act and described how to automate database migrations,...(read more)

  • IIS7 VPS Hosting Server Configuration

    - by Craig
I have just registered a Windows 2008 VPS hosting account which I plan on running a couple of web sites on. In the past I have just used shared hosting in which everything is set up for me, so need a few pointers. When I register a new domain it asks for a couple of name servers. How do I set this up on my server? Can I just give it the IP address of the VPS server? Do I have to register some web sites with ns1, ns2 host headers in IIS? It's all a bit confusing when never done before. I have two web sites I plan on hosting. I configured both in IIS with a different IP address (the VPS plan has 2) but when trying to access the site via IP it always displays the default web site. If I turn off the default web site it just 404's. Is there any simple tutorials for setting up a couple of sites from scratch.

  • Windows 7 - Virtualbox host only adapter doesn't get an IP

    - by Craig
When I create a new host only network adapter, it will not set the IP address I assign to it. After I save the IP address & netmask it looks like it works (I see the Windows 7 User Account Control verification box), but the IP address doesn't get stored on the adapter. I have tried adding/removing the adapter from within virtualbox and settings the values manually in the Windows aapter settings dialogue. I am using a Windows 7 host. Does anyone know why the settings don't get saved, or how to get more information? • Openldap startup problems after upgrade

    - by Craig Efrein
I am trying to syncrhonize a ldap slave and master server. The master server is using openldap 2.3.43-12 and the slave server is using openldap 2.4.23. I copied over the files in /var/lib/ldap, started the server and got this error: Oct 22 16:16:41 xe-ldap-slave1 slapd[12111]: bdb(dc=myserver,dc=fr): Program version 4.7 doesn't match environment version 4.4 Oct 22 16:16:41 xe-ldap-slave1 slapd[12111]: bdb_db_open: database "dc=myserver,dc=fr" cannot be opened, err -30971. • Suggestions for Troubleshooting WIndows 7 lockups

    - by Craig L
I've got a Dell Latitude E6500 that was working fine under Vista x64. I got one of the new Seagate 500GB Hybrid SSD/HD 2.5 drives and thought.. hmm.. let's try Win 7 x64 on it. Bottom line: It works great for hours and then it will hard lock. I don't mean BSOD (or whatever the Win7 equivalent is). I mean my screen is displaying a static image (if there is a clock displayed, it will be frozen at the time the lockup occurred) and the mouse and keyboard do not work. Control-Alt-Delete will not work. I have to hold down the power button to reboot. The event log records NOTHING at the time the lockup occurs. Obviously something is happening to the system to cause the lockup, but the default Windows 7 x64 doesn't log it. How can I log the things Windows doesn't normally log in Event Viewer ?

  • Configuring SMB shares in OS X

    - by Craig Walker
I'm at my wit's end trying to control SMB file sharing on my Mac. (OS X 10.5 Leopard). I want to do something fairly simple: share a particular (non-home, non-Public) folder over my my SMB/Windows network with two users (accounts are local to my Mac), and share no other folders with anyone. The instructions on the internet are fairly straightforward: add the folders to be shared to the File Sharing panel of the Sharing System Preferences pane: ..and ensure that I'm sharing through SMB: However, when I actually try to connect via a SMB client (Windows XP in this case), the share does not appear. I see my home directory, "Macintosh HD", and my printers, but not the folder I just shared. I ensured that the underlying directory had the proper permissions (since this seems to affect share visibility) and that the "Shared Folder" checkbox was checked: ...but this didn't have any effect. I checked /etc/smb.conf but there was nothing obviously out of place there. I've also restarted smbd and rebooted. What else should I be looking for?

Features: Y axis: Usage (Kw-h) X axis: Month Line 0..n: lines representing each year's monthly Usage (Kw-h) Bonus points: instead of a line for each year, each month would have a high-low-close (HLC) bar; 'close' would be replaced by the average second Y axis and HLC bar that represents cost/month Questions: Can this be done without a Pivot table? Do I need to have the Year and Month column or can Excel automatically determine this? Current chart:

  • Using IIS7 why are my PNGs being cached by the browser, but my JS and CSS files not?

    - by Craig Shearer
I am trying to sort out caching in IIS for my site. Basically, I want nothing cached, except for .png, .js, and .css files. At my site level, I opened the HTTP Reponse Headers and used the "Set Common Hedaers..." to set content to expire immediately. I have no Output Caching profiles set at any level in IIS. I clear my browser cache then try accessing my site. When my site requests a PNG file, I see responses like: Accept-Ranges bytes Age 0 Connection Keep-Alive Content-Type image/png Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 21:55:15 GMT Etag "83b7322de318cd1:0" Last-Modified Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:33:45 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By ASP.NET For JS and CSS files, I see responses like: Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 597 Content-Type text/css Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 21:55:15 GMT Etag "06e45ede15bca1:0" Last-Modified Mon, 02 Nov 2009 17:28:44 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 42060 Content-Type application/x-javascript Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 21:55:14 GMT Etag "2356302de318cd1:0" Last-Modified Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:33:45 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET So, why are my PNGs able to be cached, but JS and CSS files not? Then, I go into the Output Caching feature in IIS and set up profiles for .png, .css, and .js files. This updates the web.config file as follows: <caching> <profiles> <add extension=".png" policy="CacheUntilChange" kernelCachePolicy="DontCache" /> <add extension=".css" policy="CacheUntilChange" kernelCachePolicy="DontCache" /> <add extension=".js" policy="CacheUntilChange" kernelCachePolicy="DontCache" /> </profiles> </caching> I do a "precautionary" IISReset then try accessing my site again. For PNG files, I see the following response: Accept-Ranges bytes Age 0 Connection Keep-Alive Content-Length 3833 Content-Type image/png Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 22:02:30 GMT Etag "0548c9e2c5dc81:0" Last-Modified Tue, 22 Jan 2008 19:26:00 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By ASP.NET For CSS and JS files, I see the following responses: Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache,no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 2680 Content-Type application/x-javascript Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 22:02:29 GMT Etag "0f743af9015c81:0" Last-Modified Tue, 23 Oct 2007 16:20:54 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET Accept-Ranges bytes Cache-Control no-cache,no-cache Connection Keep-Alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 3831 Content-Type text/css Date Thu, 12 Apr 2012 22:02:29 GMT Etag "c3f42d2de318cd1:0" Last-Modified Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:33:45 GMT Server Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Vary Accept-Encoding X-Powered-By ASP.NET What am I doing wrong? Have I completely misunderstood the features of IIS, or is there a bug. Most importantly, how do I achieve what I want - that is get the browser to cache only PNG, JS and CSS files?

  • Tail the filename, not the file

    - by Craig Walker
In UNIX (OS X BSD to be precise), I have a "tail -f" command on a log file. From time to time I want to delete this log file so I can more easily review it in my text editor. I delete the file, and then my program recreates it after new activity. However, my tail command (and anything else that was watching the old log file) doesn't update; it's still watching the old, deleted log file. I think I understand why this is (file names simply being pointers to blocks of file data). I'd like to know how I can work around this. Ideally, my tail command (and anything else I point to the file) would be able to read the data from the new file when the file name has been deleted and recreated. How would I do this?

  • DNS Resolution doesn't work after uninstalling Cisco VPN & Deterministic Network Enhancer in Win 7

    - by Craig M
I just upgraded my home PC to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. After trying various methods to get the Cisco VPN client to work, I gave up and decided to just run it in XP mode. The last steps I tried were in this article ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproappcompat/thread/d880dfe5-7f44-4955-8620-2a9355d8ea8b/ ) After that, I uninstalled the Cisco client and rebooted. I uninstalled the Deterministic Network Enhancer and rebooted again. Both uninstalled successfully, but now I'm not able to resolve any DNS. The only way I can resolve DNS is to reinstall the DNE, reboot, and uninstall the DNE. Then I am able to resolve DNS lookups until I reboot again. Once it's rebooted, no more DNS. Any ideas?

  • Anonymous FTP upload on CentOS 5.2

    - by Craig
I need to allow users to upload files to an FTP server anonymously. They should not be able to see any other files, or download files. It is a CentOS 5.2 server. I have a separate partition for the the upload area (mounted at /ftp). I have tried to set up vsftpd, followed all the instructions/advice I could find. But, when a user logs in and tries to transfer a file it throws a "553 could not create file." error. If I do a 'pwd' it shows the directory as "/" rather than the anon_root of "/ftp/anonymous". Any attempt to change the remote directory ends with "550 Failed to change directory.". I have a subdirectory "/ftp/anonymous/incoming" that is writable for the uploads SELinux is in permissive mode. I am running version 2.0.5 release 16.el5 of vsftpd. Here is the vsftpd.conf file: anonymous_enable=YES local_enable=YES write_enable=YES local_umask=002 anon_umask=007 file_open_mode=0666 anon_upload_enable=YES anon_mkdir_write_enable=NO dirmessage_enable=YES xferlog_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES chown_uploads=YES chown_username=inftpadm xferlog_std_format=YES nopriv_user=nobody listen=YES pam_service_name=vsftpd userlist_enable=YES tcp_wrappers=YES ftp_username=inftpadm anon_root=/ftp/anonymous anon_other_write_enable=NO anon_mkdir_write_enable=NO anon_world_readable_only=NO dirlist_enable=YES Can anyone help?

  • Problem deleting folder and files from "Program Files" folder in Win 7

    - by Craig Johnston
How do you delete folders and files from the "Program Files" folder in Win 7? I am trying to do this on someone else's computer and I don't know what rights their user account is. It says that I don't have permission to delete the folder. I thought it was an administrator account because when I do "Run as Administrator" for other things it doesn't ask for a password, so it must be an administrator account. Should I be able to delete a folder out of "Program Files" if the account has administrator rights? Or do I need to do something else, such as "Take Ownership" of the folder.

  • How to Re-install an App that Shows up in the Appstore as 'Update' Instead of 'Buy App'

    - by Craig Reville
So long story short: I dropped the wrong app into 'clean my mac' and I hit 'cancel' but it was too late by that point. I rebooted and appstore said it had an update, when I opened appstore it was showing an update for the app I just uninstalled. I tried clicking 'update' but it gives me an error saying it's unable to install after 'downloading'. When I try to go into 'purchased apps' it shows the app as uninstalled so I click 'install' and I get an error saying it's already installed. I'm running Lion OS X, latest version, updated, mac book pro is only a few months old. I tried searching through the entire system to remove all traces of the app, after rebooting appstore no longer shows the app and no longer shows the update but on the apps page it still says 'Update'. I tried reinstalling the app from desktop OUT of the appstore and again says the app is 'already installed'. So after reading more about lion I found an article that spoke about 'BundleID' being the thing that tells appstore what's installed and needing updating however I can't find the location of where the BundleID would be. Any thoughts? I've tried CCleaner, AppCleaner etc and none of them show the app, mainly because it is uninstalled. Update I've spoken to Apple Support who confirmed that there is a file in the system that connects separately to tell the system if there are updates available however they declined to inform me of any further details. Apple also referred me from technical support to iTunes App Store opposed to Mac App Store support and from there I have been referred to AppleCare who are currently 'investigating' this issue. Hopefully there will be a fix that's simple to implement for people having similar issues, this appears to be a more common issue than I previously thought.

  • 2011 i7 Macbook Pro unable to boot from any Windows CD?

    - by Craig Otis
I'm encountering issues installing Windows alongside my Lion install. I'm attempting to install from the internal SuperDrive, after using Boot Camp to partition what was a single, HFS+ volume. When holding down Option at boot, the CD appears in the startup list, but upon selecting it, I get a gray screen for 5 minutes, then a flashing white folder. I tried installing rEFIt and using this to boot the CD, but I receive an error about "Not Found" being returned from the "LocateDevicePath", and a mention of the firmware not supporting booting using legacy methods. In the Console, when opening the StartupDisk preference pane (which never presents the CD as a selectable option), I see: 11/25/11 4:39:31.159 PM System Preferences: isCDROM: 0 isDVDROM:1 11/25/11 4:39:31.159 PM System Preferences: mountable disk appeared: /Volumes/GRMCPRFRER_EN_DVD 11/25/11 4:39:33.214 PM System Preferences: - So far so good, passing disk to System Searcher. 11/25/11 4:39:33.218 PM System Preferences: OSXCheck: No boot.efi in System Folder or volume root. 11/25/11 4:39:33.220 PM System Preferences: WinCheck: Not a valid windows filesystem: /Volumes/GRMCPRFRER_EN_DVD 11/25/11 4:39:33.220 PM System Preferences: WinCheck: Not a valid windows filesystem: /Volumes/GRMCPRFRER_EN_DVD I'm at a loss here. I've done my research, but it sounds like most of the rEFIt errors of this nature are caused by installing from a thumbdrive, or an external drive. I'm using the internal SuperDrive. Also, I've tried this with two different disks: A Windows XP SP2 CD A Windows 7 x86 DVD Both are disks I've had around for years, and I've used them reliably in the past. The system is an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, all firmware updates installed.

  • All my sites are 403 but the server is running. Errors on startup

    - by Craig
We gave access to a contractor to install a firewall and somehow while he was doing it he fracked something up. Everything went off-line about 24 hours ago and we are effectively out of business until I solve this and the person who messed up the thing is not returning calls. I found a few errors. First, I'm not a server guy - I can look at log files and normally everything runs fine. All 'services' are running according to 1and1 server monitoring and mail is being delivered just fine. The whole thing was off-line until I (probably stupidly) updated the kernel from 6.2 to 6.3 this morning and I got everything back except the http access. All the domains (~200 of them) are returning a 403 error and nothing is recorded in the access log. On every restart I see this error in the messages log file: init: Failed to spawn ttyS0 main process: unable to execute: No such file or directory and a little later these: kernel: WARNING: at kernel/sched.c:5914 thread_return+0x232/0x79d() (Not tainted) kernel: Hardware name: X9SCL/X9SCM kernel: Modules linked in: xt_iprange iptable_filter ip_tables ip6t_REJECT nf_conntrack_ipv6 nf_defrag_ipv6 xt_state nf_conntrack ip6table_filter ip6_tables ipv6 ext4 jbd2 serio_raw i2c_i801 i2c_core sg iTCO_wdt iTCO_vendor_support e1000e ext3 jbd mbcache raid1 sd_mod crc_t10dif ahci dm_mirror dm_region_hash dm_log dm_mod [last unloaded: scsi_wait_scan] kernel: Pid: 367, comm: md3_raid1 Not tainted 2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.x86_64 #1 kernel: Call Trace: kernel: [<ffffffff81069997>] ? warn_slowpath_common+0x87/0xc0 kernel: [<ffffffff810699ea>] ? warn_slowpath_null+0x1a/0x20 kernel: [<ffffffff814eccc5>] ? thread_return+0x232/0x79d kernel: [<ffffffff8126a4d9>] ? cpumask_next_and+0x29/0x50 kernel: [<ffffffff813e9c05>] ? md_super_wait+0x55/0x90 kernel: [<ffffffff81090a10>] ? autoremove_wake_function+0x0/0x40 kernel: [<ffffffff813ebf46>] ? md_update_sb+0x206/0x3f0 kernel: [<ffffffff813ee922>] ? md_check_recovery+0x3f2/0x6d0 kernel: [<ffffffffa005b129>] ? raid1d+0x49/0x1050 [raid1] kernel: [<ffffffff814ed985>] ? schedule_timeout+0x215/0x2e0 kernel: [<ffffffff814ef447>] ? _spin_unlock_irqrestore+0x17/0x20 kernel: [<ffffffff813eb336>] ? md_thread+0x116/0x150 kernel: [<ffffffff81090a10>] ? autoremove_wake_function+0x0/0x40 kernel: [<ffffffff813eb220>] ? md_thread+0x0/0x150 kernel: [<ffffffff810906a6>] ? kthread+0x96/0xa0 kernel: [<ffffffff8100c14a>] ? child_rip+0xa/0x20 kernel: [<ffffffff81090610>] ? kthread+0x0/0xa0 kernel: [<ffffffff8100c140>] ? child_rip+0x0/0x20 And something is wrong with the Named/BIND resulting in the same error for all domains: zone DOMAINEXAMPLE.com/IN: loading from master file DOMAINEXAMPLE.com failed: file not found zone DOMAINEXAMPLE.com/IN: not loaded due to errors. _default/DOMAINEXAMPLE.com/IN: file not found I'm pretty sure this is not enough information to solve the problem, but I'm willing to engage someone who can work this out for me. • Which file format to use for simple video editoring

    - by Craig HB
I've just bought a Sanyo VPC-CG10 camcorder which saves clips as MPEG-4 (specifically, High-Definition 720p MPEG-4 AVC/H.246) I want a simple, cheap way to edit the clips and as, I'm using Windows Vista, I though Windows Movie Maker would be a good choice. But you can't import mp4 files into Windows Movie Maker. I've tried various codecs, but I'm not sure what is the best format to convert to, so that I can edit the files in Windows Movie Maker. AVI, MPG, WMI... I'm not sure what format is best. Should I try to keep the movie clips in MPEG-4 and edit them in that format (and then which editor do I use?) or is there a better format that I should convert to before editing (and what format is that?) ?

  • Indentation-based Folding for TextMate

    - by Craig Walker
SASS and HAML have indentation-based syntax, much like Python. Blocks of related code have the same number of spaces at the start of a line. Here's some example code: #drawer height: 100% color: #c2c7c4 font: size: 10px .slider overflow: hidden height: 100% .edge background: url('/images/foo') repeat-y .tab margin-top = !drawer_top width: 56px height: 161px display: block I'm using phuibonhoa's SASS bundle, and I'd like to enhance it so that the various sections can fold. For instance, I'd like to fold everything under #drawer, everything under .slider, everything under .edge, etc. The bundle currently includes the following folding code: foldingStartMarker = '/\*|^#|^\*|^\b|^\.'; foldingStopMarker = '\*/|^\s*$'; How can I enhance this to fold similarly-indented blocks?
