  • Prevent Windows 7 from installing a "critical" updates that crashes the system

    I am running Windows 7 home premium. Up until yesterday, everything was going just beautifully, until I received a "critical update". As soon as the critical update was installed, the system became extremely unstable and froze up every few minutes requiring me to restart the system several times, with the same results. I used system restore to roll back the * update, and everything went back to normal... except that I keep getting a message telling me to restart the computer so that it can install this "critical update". There is no "don't install that crap on my machine" option. Disabling the updates doesn't change anything, turning off the windows update service doesn't change anything either, and being on Home premium, I have no access to the group policies. Any ideas of what can be done to prevent Windows from installing this update the next time I reboot?

    I have disabled Windows Update on Windows 7, but it still downloads and installs critical updates. As with Windows XP, these updates occasionally create problems. But in XP, once I disabled automatic updates, the OS did not override my settings and continue to download and install critical updates. After the most recent critical update to Windows 7, every time I boot up, the USB devices connected to a single port through 4-way hub don't install. I have to unplug the hub from the computer then plug it back in. Then the devices install. I can use System Recovery to solve the immediate problem, but I'd like to disable automatic updates entirely. Why does Windows 7 not respect my settings like Windows XP did?

  • Core Data (NSFetchedResultsController) displaying one row per section

    I have a CoreData application which uses NSFetchedResultsController. NSFetchedResultsController is useful in that it allows me to access the fetched objects more easily etc. but I find that I have problems with the following: I get a crash when I display a single row for each section (irrespective of the number of actual rows present) as a summary of the information in that section (e.g. showing a statistical analysis of the data contained in the fetched rows for that section). I understand that the NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegatemethods have to agree with the number of rows reported per section by the UITableView Delegate method but I would like to be able to fetch all of the records for each section without necessarily displaying each of the rows. The above causes me inconsistency crashes, when I try to insert or delete data for a section, which reports that the number of rows for each section is not as it should be given the number of insertions/deletions. Is there any way I can do what I'm trying to achieve? Thanks for any help.

    I use Disqus comments plugin for Wordpress, and the comments section is indented to the right like a blockquote is. The code appearing in the front end post is: <div id="disqus_thread"> <div id="dsq-content"> <ul id="dsq-comments"> </ul> </div> </div> I cannot find any instance of disqus_thread or dsq using a search of the theme folder; not that searching inside file in Windows 7 isn't a complete pain in the arse.   • In launcher, disable the music suggestion section

    Everytime I want to launch an office program, I begin typing "of" in the launcher, and... pictures of lightly-clothed ladies show up. Not the end of the world, but because I do this a lot in front of customers and bosses, it is often embarrassing. I have already disabled Zeitgeist and "recently used". Banshee does not have any Zeitgeist item in Edit > Preferences > Extensions. Is there a way to disable this "Music" section in the launcher suggestions? Or maybe I just must stop playing dance music via Banshee...

  • Ubutu 14.04 triple screen, third screen black and X cursor

    I am having some issues getting my third screen working properly. I had triple screens working fine on 12.04, using 2 nvidia cards. Did a fresh install of 14.04 and having no end of problems getting it working. It either will just be disabled, or the screen is black with the cursor as an X. I can only enable it from the nvidia server settings tool. The Ubuntu native display settings won't even show the 3rd screen. I tried copying the xorg.conf from my old install, which upon restarting X worked fine on the login screen, but then it just sat there after I logged in and didn’t do anything (mouse was still working). I am using gnome-session-fallback instead of unity if that makes any difference. Still having these issues if I try unity though. How do I get my 3rd screen working and displaying a desktop?   • How to loop section from a song correctly?

    I'm programming a little Music Engine for my game in C# and XNA, and one aspect from it is the possibility to loop a section from a song. For example, my song has an intropart, and when the song reached the end ( or any other specific point ), it jumps back where the intropart is just over. ( A - B - B - B ... ) Now I'm using IrrKlank, which is working perfectly, without any gaps, but I have a problem: The point where to jump back is a bit inaccurate. Here's some example code: public bool Passed(float time) { if ( PlayPosition >= time ) return true; return false; } //somewhere else if( song.Passed( 10.0f ) ) song.JumpTo( 5.0f ); Now the problem is, the song passes the 10 seconds, but play a few milliseconds until 10.1f or so, and then jumps to 5 seconds. It's not that dramatic, but very incorrect for my needs. I tried to fix it like that: public bool Passed( float time ) { if( PlayPosition + 3 * dt >= time && PlayPosition <= time ) return true; return false; } ( dt is the delta time, the elapsed time since the last frame ) But I don't think, that's a good solution for that. I hope, you can understand my problem ( and my english, yay /o/ ) and help me :)

  • NSFetchedResultsController not updating UITableView's section indexes

    I am populating a UITableViewController with an NSFetchedResultsController with results creating sections that populate section headers and a section index. I am using the following method to populate the section index: - (NSArray *)sectionIndexTitlesForTableView:(UITableView *)tableView { return [fetchedResultsController_ sectionIndexTitles]; } and now I've run into a problem. When I add a new element to the NSManagedObjectContext associated with the NSFetchedResultsController, the new element is saved and appropriately displayed as a cell in the UITableView ... except for one thing. If the new element creates a new SECTION, the new section index does not show up in the right hand margin unless I pop the UINavigationController's stack and reload the UITableViewController. I have conformed to the NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate's interface and manually invoke [self.tableView reloadSectionIndexTitles]; at the end of both these delegate methods: controller:didChangeSection... controller:didChangeObject... and while I can debug and trace the execution into the methods and see the reload call invoked, the UITableView's section index never reflects the section changes. Again, the data shows up - new sections are physically visible (or removed) in the UITableView but the section indexes are not updated. Am I missing something?

    I'm querying some signal level values measured in dBm, and the SNMP host on the remove device reports the values as negative values, ie, -90 dBm. However, check-snmp seems to be incapable of dealing with negative numbers as part of its threshold values. My purpose is to discriminative between notification for warning state and critical state of check service: with warning state: + time to send alert from 8h = 18 h everyday, via email and sms + notification_interval is 60 minutes (Re-notify about service problems every hour) with critical state: + time to send alert : all time (24 x 7), via email and sms + notification_interval is 30 minutes Please show me how to solve my problem!   • eBay Leads Mobile Commerce

    For the first time, more smartphones where shipped than PCs. This important milestone helps reinforce that retailers need a strong mobile commerce strategy. IDC reported that for the 4th quarter of 2010, manufacturers shipped 100.9 million devices versus 92.1 million PCs shipped. One early adopter for the retail industry is eBay, the popular online auction and shopping site. In July 2008 they released their first mobile app and have increased investments ever since. In 2002 they bought PayPal for use with its online channel, but its becoming a force in the mobile world as well. In June 2010 they acquired RedLaser, the popular barcode scanning mobile app. Both pieces of technology enhance the mobile experience, and are available to other retailers as well. More recently, in December 2010 they acquired Critical Path Software, the developer of their eBay, StubHub, and Shopping.com mobile applications. Taking their mobile development in-house was a clear signal that mobile commerce is important to their strategy. Pop on over the eBay Inc's mobile commerce stats page to see just how well they are doing. You can use the animated map to see where people are using the app on any given day, and you can compare sales of the different categories. eBay's hottest category is Cars & Trucks, garnering 16.5% of the total $2B (yes, billion) in mobile sales in 2010. To understand why that category is so large, let's look at the top 10 most expensive cars sold on eBay mobile in 2010: $240,001 Mercedes-Benz: SLR McLaren $209,888 Lamborghini: Gallardo $208,500 Ferrari: 430 $199,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo $189,000 Lamborghini: Murcielago $185,000 Ferrari: 430 $175,000 Porsche: 911 $170,000 Ferrari: 550 $160,000 Bentley: Continental, GT $159,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo eBay claims they sell 3-4 Ferraris on their mobile app each month. Yes, mobile commerce is not limited to small items. While I would wait to get home and fire up the PC, the current generation that has grown up with mobile phones has no issue satisfying their impulses. Dave Sikora of Digby told me he's seen people buy furniture sets, mattresses, and diamonds via their mobile phones. I guess mobile commerce is rapidly becoming the norm.
