  • Software-based computer supervisor recommendation

    - by doug
Let's consider the following scenario: In a hospital, the patients can use some some public computers which have Windows 7 and Internet access. The 'administrator' (read the responsible for the computers in the room) wishes to give to every patient a username and a password in order to use the computers. The problem is that the users can do stupid things or will install infected programs. Do you know any software which allow the administrator to view which user had a bad behaviour?

  • How do I renew an expired Ubuntu OpenLDAP SSL Certificate

    - by Doug Symes
We went through the steps of revoking an SSL Certificate used by our OpenLDAP server and renewing it but we are unable to start slapd. Here are the commands we used: openssl verify hostname_domain_com_cert.pem We got back that the certificate was expired but "OK" We revoked the certificate we'd been using: openssl ca -revoke /etc/ssl/certs/hostname_domain_com_cert.pem Revoking worked fine. We created the new Cert Request by passing it the key file as input: openssl req -new -key hostname_domain_com_key.pem -out newreq.pem We generated a new certificate using the newly created request file "newreq.pem" openssl ca -policy policy_anything -out newcert.pem -infiles newreq.pem We looked at our cn=config.ldif file and found the locations for the key and cert and placed the newly dated certificate in the needed path. Still we are unable to start slapd with: service slapd start We get this message: Starting OpenLDAP: slapd - failed. The operation failed but no output was produced. For hints on what went wrong please refer to the system's logfiles (e.g. /var/log/syslog) or try running the daemon in Debug mode like via "slapd -d 16383" (warning: this will create copious output). Below, you can find the command line options used by this script to run slapd. Do not forget to specify those options if you want to look to debugging output: slapd -h 'ldap:/// ldapi:/// ldaps:///' -g openldap -u openldap -F /etc/ldap/slapd.d/ Here is what we found in /var/log/syslog Oct 23 20:18:25 ldap1 slapd[2710]: @(#) $OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.21 (Dec 19 2011 15:40:04) $#012#011buildd@allspice:/build/buildd/openldap-2.4.21/debian/build/servers/slapd Oct 23 20:18:25 ldap1 slapd[2710]: main: TLS init def ctx failed: -1 Oct 23 20:18:25 ldap1 slapd[2710]: slapd stopped. Oct 23 20:18:25 ldap1 slapd[2710]: connections_destroy: nothing to destroy. We are not sure what else to try. Any ideas?

  • How can one undelete an accidentally deleted fan page?

    - by Doug T.
No clue if this is an appropriate SU question or if it's best migrated elsewhere. I help administer a Facebook fan page for a local business. Recently one of the other administrators accidentally deleted the Facebook fan page. We have tried to fill out this form: http://www.facebook.com/developers/developer_help.php And have yet to receive a response. We are desperate to have the fan page restored. Thanks for any pointers.

  • Can't install windows 7

    - by Doug
I recently formatted my Acer Aspire 4730z and attempted to install Windows 7. I have tried more than 5 times with no avail. Currently, I am doing a clean install by booting it from the DVD. I have the SATA set to IDE. When it restarts after the installation to complete the installation, it goes to a black screen and stops moving. It's been 10 minutes now.

  • Exposing the ipPhone attribute to Communicator and the OCS address book service

    - by Doug Luxem
I am in the process of integrating OCS with our Cisco phone system using CUCIMOC. After some fiddling with the phone normalization rules, it appears that I can get PSTN numbers to be dialed though the CUCIMOC interface (yay!). However, during this process I came to realize that the ipPhone attribute in Active Directory does not appear to be exposed to Communicator (and CUCIMOC). What is strange though, is that I can see from the OCS address book service "Invalid_AD_Phone_Numbers.txt" that the attribute is processed by the address book service. My question is, how do I expose the ipPhone field in Office Communicator? Currently, Communicator maps like this - Work = telephoneNumber Mobile = mobile Home = homePhone Attributes such as otherHomePhone, ipPhone, otherMobile, otherTelephone, otherIpPhone are ignored.

  • nameserver spoiling avahi multicast name resolution of .local domain

    - by Doug Coburn
After trying to ping a machine on my local network, I noticed that I was trying hit address 66.152.109.24. This is an external public address. Resolution should have occurred via avahi mDNS. I ran dig to see how the name resolution worked and my quest/centurylink name server was retuning results for my .local domain queries! I tried a random name and got the same ip address result. $ dig jakdafj.local ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1-RedHat-9.8.1-3.P1.fc15 <<>> jakdafj.local ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 58410 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;jakdafj.local. • What are the benefits of full VDI over Remote Desktop Services?

    - by Doug Chase
We're talking about piloting VDI here, but the more research I do, the more it seems like it would make more sense just to upgrade and expand our TS (RDS) environment. I feel like you can pull off more sessions per core on RDS than on any VDI solution I've looked at. Is this the case? Is there a decision matrix anywhere describing the benefits of using full virtualized desktops over using a remote desktop farm? We need good video performance for clinical imaging - will this work better on one infrastructure or the other? (Does this question have a specific enough answer for it to be on SF? Regardless, I feel like having this here will be helpful for someone in the future...)

  • Price drop patterns

    - by doug
I'm looking to buy a new laptop, and i don't need the top hi-tech because I'll use it for office type applications. In this case, the CPU and RAM are those who are mostly used. For example Intel i3 CPU was launched in Jan 2010 and in this case, the prices for Core Duo technology will drop. Do you know when or which are the signs? Can we talk about such a pattern?

  • dissabling touchpad buttons on a laptop

    - by doug
Hi there Does anyone knows how to disable the left click button on a laptop touchpad? It stays pressed all the time, and I'll like to disable it and use the right click as a left click. Does anyone knows if that is possible? Or at least to disable both of them. Thank you

  • iWork '09 Keynote: is there is straightforward way to 'dim' and 'highlight' each item in a bullet li

    - by doug
I have a bullet list on a slide: first item second item third item What I want to do is show those three bulleted items in a sequence like this: first bullet appears first bullet dims second bullet appears second bullet dims third bullet appears third bullet dims In other words, only one bullet is shown at a time (the one i am current discussing) to reduce audience distraction by what comes next or what i just finished discussing (the prior bullet). This is such a common thing to do, there's got to be a simple, reliable way to do it. The only way I know of is to configure the items individually (using "Build In" and "Action" on each bullet item, which is not only slow but doesn't work well). Another way i've found--which, again is very slow--is to create my bullet list not by selecting a bullet list, but to build the list manually with text boxes (one bullet item per text box) then line them up as a list. This way it's easier to manipulate them independently--again though, takes way too long to do one slide this way.

  • china and gmail attacks

    - by doug
"We have evidence to suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. Based on our investigation to date we believe their attack did not achieve that objective. Only two Gmail accounts appear to have been accessed, and that activity was limited to account information (such as the date the account was created) and subject line, rather than the content of emails themselves.” [source] I don't know much about how internet works, but as long the chines gov has access to the chines internet providers servers, why do they need to hack gmail accounts? I assume that i don't understand how submitting/writing a message(from user to gmail servers) works, in order to be sent later to the other email address. Who can tell me how submitting a message to a web form works?

  • IIS 7 - Provisioning portal

    - by Doug
I am wanting to setup our production IIS environments with a provisioning portal to ensure that deployment staff always setup sites in a uniform configuration, and that they don't actually have remote access to the servers directly. What is the best 'simple' provisioning tool for such a purpose? Do people write their own using something like Powershell remoting? I don't want to install a tool like HELM or similar as it feels like it creates unnecessary bloat on top of a production environment. features should include: create new website and app pool combo restart, start and stop application pools change bindings on websites

  • Reputable web based ssh client? [closed]

    - by Doug T.
I'm connected to a coffee shop's wireless network right now, and I suspected I'd be able to use my laptop and ssh somewhere. Unlucky me they seem to be blocking everything but web traffic (my testing seems to show everything but port 80 is working, can't ping, ftp, etc). I googled "web based ssh clients" however I have reservations about entering my login credentials on any Joe Schmoe's web app. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any reputable web based ssh clients? If so could you please point me at one that I could trust?

  • where is my free space

    - by doug
Hi there I'm using Pinnacle Studio 12 to edit some videos and as you can guess it use a lot of resources. The problem is that it eats all my free space from the C drive and after i close the application i don;t get back my free space. I assume it does some swap files but where and why it doesn't delete them? I don't store the project and saved files on C drive. I'm running Pinnacle Studio 12 on a XP sp3 Windows machine. I've tried to clean my system with CClean, but it doesn't find/see where my space is lost! TY

  • How do I use WAV files as a voicemail greeting in Exchange UM?

    - by Doug Luxem
We are in the process of ditching Cisco Unity for Exchange 2007 Unified Messaging; however, I just came to realization that Exchange doesn't seem to provide a way to upload a WAV file to be used as a voicemail greeting. This could be a problem, since we have several mailboxes that use professionally recorded greetings. I found this article which shows how to access the data through MAPI, but it does not provide a way to upload new files. Note, this is not for the auto attendants, but for actual voicemail greetings.

  • Visual Studio 2008 Debugger really slow with SSD

    - by Doug
Hey guys, my setup is a laptop with Win 7 64bit, VS2008 SP1 on an intel x25-m 4gb RAM with page file turned off (no need) and 2.2 core duo What happens is weird: When i build my project and attach the debugger the symbols load REALLY slowly... like 1 every 5 secs Sometimes the symbols will fail to load at all. This is driving me crazy as this was a freshly installed win 7 box with default VS installation, working on ASP.net web applications... i've never had to use symbol servers or any of that jazz so i'm quite frustrated. With this SSD it should breath fire as it does with loading and doing everything else. Am i missing something?

  • Log of cron actions on OS X

    - by Doug Harris
Does the cron which comes with OS X log its actions anywhere? I'm not looking for output of any particular cron job, but rather log of what cron is doing. On a couple linux machines I've checked, there's /var/log/cron which has contents like: Apr 26 11:00:01 localhost crond[27755]: (root) CMD (/root/bin/mysql-backup) Apr 26 11:01:01 localhost crond[27892]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly) Apr 26 11:07:01 localhost crond[28138]: (root) CMD (/usr/local/bin/python /home/ user1/scripts/pythonscript.py) Apr 26 11:18:18 localhost crontab[28921]: (user2) LIST (user2) Apr 26 11:18:22 localhost crontab[28929]: (user2) BEGIN EDIT (user2) Apr 26 11:18:59 localhost crontab[28929]: (user2) REPLACE (user2) This shows when jobs ran, when users viewed or edited crontabs, etc. This stuff is nowhere that I've found on my Snow Leopard machine.

  • Why is Flash power-hungry?

    - by Doug
Apple historically argued that Flash was power-hungry, which made it inappropriate for use on mobile devices. I always thought that was just bluster excusing Apple's exclusion of Flash support from their mobile devices. But now I see that Adobe acknowledges that Flash is a pig. Why is it a pig? Are there bad programming approaches (that can be explained in layman's terms) that make it so power-hungry?

  • Kindle (client) for Mac

    - by doug
So we're clear, i'm talking bout the client/software version here--ie, that you install on your Mac or PC--not the device. The Kindle client was recently released for the Mac. I bought a couple of Kindle-edition books and i'm reading them using this client. Astonishingly, two features i consider to be more or less essential to any ebook reader are missing in the Kindle client, either that, or i can't find them: (i) text searching; and (ii) highlighting text. First, does anyone know how to access the search feature? I'm aware of the "Go To" button at the top middle of the reader window--the options in that menu when you click the button are: "Cover", "Table of Contents", "Beginning" and "Location." "Location" requires that you type in an integer (but it doesn't correspond to page number--e.g., typing "167" brought me to the table of contents), not a search term. Second, there's a button on the upper right-hand corner of the window "Show Notes and Marks" yet i can't find any way to highlight text. The only kind of "note" or "mark" i have been able to record is to "bookmark" a page by clicking the "bookmark" button also at the top of the window.
