  I have some numbers in AH, AL, BL, BH registers. I need to check whether there is 0 bit in each of the registers in left half of the number. If yes, then put into check variable value 10 else -10. How can I do this?   So I have my rails application and I have blog posts in my application. For starters I am on rails 2.3.5 and Ruby 1.8.7 For the show page, I am required to give a prev/next link to the prev/next blog post. The catch is that I need to find the next blog where the language column in the database is equal to 'eng'.   "Refer to objects by their interfaces" is a good practise, as mentioned in Effective Java. So for example i prefer List<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); over ArrayList<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); in my code. One annoying thing is that if i type ArrayList<String> al = new and then hit Ctrl+Space in Eclipse i get ArrayList<String>() as propostal. But if i type List al = new and then hit Ctrl+Space i will get only propostal to define anonymous inner class, but not propostals such as new ArrayList<String>(), what is 99% the case, or for example new Vector<String>(). Is there any way to get the subclasses as propostals for generic types?

• Is hiring a "chief intern" a good idea?

  I'm starting an internship program for our software department and I was wondering about creating a position ("chief intern", intern supervisor, or whatever one should call it) with the following responsibilities: Train interns Coach interns Manage projects and tasks for interns Supervise intern's work in terms of rhythm and quality Act as a liaison between the main team's needs and interns performance/aspirations Evaluate and facilitate intern's progress when they want to grab a higher-level domain-specific task (at this point, a main dev team member can do mentoring) Get freely involved in the main team's software development tasks so that he himself can grow, and have full mentorship from the main dev team. I'm thinking that an apprentice-level engineer (below Jr., or Jr.; but being a graduate and working full-time) can handle this for a while (he will be trained by the main dev team first), until one of two things happen: He/she decides to move on to the main dev team by recommending an appropriate replacement (or me finding another one as a new hire) Keep leading the interns while still being able to grow to Jr. Eng., Eng., Sr. Eng I know the notion of a "chief intern" is common within the medical world, but I don't really know about that in the software world (I was a freelancer for most of my university years). A side-intention to this is also that, if this ends up being a higher rotation position (organically) because the intern supervisor wants to join the main dev team, this could help interns that aspire this position emerge as leaders. My main intention for this, though, is removing distractions from the main team but without making the interns suffer the lack of attention, which could lead to boredom and little intern retention. Is this "chief intern" idea common (or good at least)?, are there any obvious risks to it that I might not be seeing? Edit: I have a draft plan for the kind of work the interns would be doing: Are R&D mini-projects a good activity for interns? Edit #2: My intention is not keeping them isolated, but having someone focus on giving attention to them when we cannot. Edit #3: I'm now convince it is a good idea, but I will take the organic approach to hiring someone in such position: do it myself until I cannot. This way I'll know better what to expect from a person I hire for this role in the future, as well as what works and what doesn't with interns.

• How can I save my university's Computer Science & Engineering department? [closed]

  I'm currently pursuing a B.S. in Computer Engineering at the University of Florida, and we're having a bit of a problem right now... The state recently passed a budget plan that cuts funding for higher education in Florida. The dean of UF's College of Engineering decided that the best way for us to absorb the blow is by executing the following plan: All of the Computer Engineering Degree programs, BS, MS and PhD, would be moved from the Computer & Information Science and Engineering Dept. to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Dept. along with most of the advising staff. Roughly half of the faculty would be offered the opportunity to move to Electrical/Computer Eng., Biomedical Eng., or Industrial/Systems Eng. Staff positions in CISE which are currently supporting research and graduate programs would be eliminated. The activities currently covered by TAs would be reassigned to faculty and the TA budget for CISE would be eliminated. Any faculty member who wishes to stay in CISE may do so, but with a revised assignment focused on teaching and advising. In short: our department (at least as we know it) is being decimated. Computer & Information Sciences & Engineering (one of 9 departments in the College of Engineering) is taking more than 50% of the cuts. A vast, VAST majority of the students and faculty in the department are vehemently opposed to this plan, however the dean is already taking measures to implement it. This is the only proposal on the table right now, and she has not entertained our requests for alternatives. She sees it as an obvious (albeit drastic) solution to our budget problem, citing that many other universities have combined Computer and Electrical Engineering departments. I'll bet those universities didn't have to eliminate an established department to get there, though. The budget goes into effect July 1, 2012 (this is non-negotiable), and the dean's proposal is currently set to be finalized some time next week. We don't have much time! My question to everyone here is this: Are we overreacting to this plan, or are we justified? And could you explain why or why not? It's obvious that CISE students will resist any cuts to our department, but I'm curious to see what other people in the field have to say. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I will select the answer that saves our department. Just kidding, I'll pick the one that best explains why this is a good or bad decision for the dean to make. Please note that anything you say can and will be used to further our cause (and we might track you down if you provide a compelling argument against us).

• FBX SDK Not Converting Child Node Coordinate Systems

  I am trying to import a scene into my application from an fbx file. In 3DS Max, the scene and it’s local translations are as follows: Root (0, 0, 0) '-Sphere001 (-15, 30, 0) ' '-Sphere002 (-2, -30, 0) ' '-Sphere003 (-30, -20, 0) '-Cube001 (35, -15, 0) This is the code that I am using to get the translations of each node: FbxDouble3 fbxPosition = pChild->LclTranslation.Get(); FbxDouble3 fbxRotation = pChild->LclRotation.Get(); FbxDouble3 fbxScale = pChild->LclScaling.Get(); When I try to import the scene, the first node from the scene is getting converted to a right handed system, using this conversion: (X, Z, -Y), but none of their child nodes are. after importing the scene, the local translations I get are as follows: Root (0, 0, 0) --Sphere001 (-15, 0, -30) - converted ----Sphere002 (-2, -30, 0) - not converted ------Sphere003 (-30, -20, 0) - not converted --Cube001 (35, 0, 15) - converted Can anybody help me make sense of this? • How can I keep the cpu temp low?

  I have an HP pavilion dv7, I'm using ubuntu 12.04 so the overheating problem with sandybridge cpu is a lot better. However my laptop is still becoming too hot to keep on my legs. The problem is that the fan wait too much before starting, so the medium temp is too hight. When I'm using windows 7 the laptop is room-temperature cold, I've absolutely no problem. On windows the fan is always spinning very low & very silently so the heat is continuously removed, without reaching an unconfortable temp. How can I force the computer to act like that also on ubuntu? • VPN says "successfully connected" and I'm internet-connected, but I can't access network resources

  To explain, I'm a university student who uses the VPN to access sites like Nature, PhysicsToday, etc. I have this VPN working on Windows 7 and I've got access to nearly every journal. However on my Ubuntu 12.04 partition I'm able to connect to the internet (in fact I'm typing this while connected through the VPN presumably) but journals have locked me out. Is there a problem on my end that I can fix?

• the "additional drivers" shows nothing

  I started using Ubuntu 32 bit last week. I love it but I recognized there was a problem with the cooling system. the fan doesn't stop and slightly loud all the time (that wasn't the case while running with windows 7). I told a friend who claimed that it should be a drivers problem. My machine is dell inspiron n5110 and the official site recommends win 7 64 bit only. there's no support for linux. (the page showing the machine drivers and system recommendation I tried to fix the problem using the "additional drivers", it opens but it shows nothing (no drivers to activate, just the help and the close buttons) is there a way to fix this?

  I want to consult you in an SEO matter which i am completely lost with, I've built a social mobile application that allows users to share text content and made all the content that appears on the application available via the web through dedicated links, however, those links cannot be navigated through the website but they are generated when users shares content through the app to social media networks. I've implemented this method on three applications with totally different content, and I've directed all generated URLs to be from the main company website which is http://frootapps.com so when users shares something, the url will change to http://frootapps.com/qareeb/share.aspx?data=127311. My question, which one is more preferable, a dedicated website for each app that uses such method? or it is ok to keep doing it the same way I am doing it?

• Removed Java replaced with newest "Sun Java", disc won't boot, and won't let me re-install grub using boot repair disc

  Had a minor problem with my Stock market platform. Set-up screen would freeze program. Called their tech support, got their "Linux guy", who advised remove all Java and replace, not with synaptic version, but newest Sun Java. After removing, computer auto rebooted, and went to blue mem-test screen. Showed no errors, but couldn't get back in. Tried two versions of boot repair disc from iso (checked md5sum, showed good.), but fix aborted, giving apt-error detected. Opened a terminal and typed (or copy/paste): sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda1" apt-get -f install. My system is Ubuntu 12.04. Had a few very minor issues from install, all fixed. Also added some of my favorite gnome tricks just to make life easier, but none that could have caused this. Added script to add shortcuts to desktop, open terminal in any menu from inside it, access root terminal, etc. System was firewalled and using avast antivirus (o.k., I'm paranoid. Used to do Windows sys-op and security.) But relative newbie to Linux.

• Why is Ubuntu offline (except torrents) while Windows is online?

  I am using a static wired connection. Everything was perfect. But suddenly from few hours back I can't access any website. Dropbox, Ubuntu One also can't connect. Ping request is also unsuccessful, but I can download through torrent. I am not trying torrent download and browsing at the same time. So, I think it's not an issue about torrent using all the bandwidth. One important point is that this connection works perfectly on Windows on this same PC (My PC is dual-boot). I have tried the way what izx has suggested (using "sudo sh -c 'echo nameserver 8.8.8.8 /etc/resolv.conf'"), but I'm facing the same problem again. Now I can't even ping 8.8.8.8 and google.com. Though I can ping 74.125.228.2 (which is Google IP address) I can't understand what's happening and why this is happening. I'm new in this website many rules and regulations is unknown to me. So, please don't be bothered for my mistakes. Looking forward for help from anyone. Thanks to all.

  Pues yo llevo muy poco tiempo con ununtu y nose que hay que hacer no se me inicia .. es decir me sale el menu grub ese y le doy al primero iniciar con linux pero me sale una rayita blanca parpadeando y asi horas y no se enciende y tengo que apagarle forzandolo de golpe y lo vuelvo a encender y le doy modo recuperacion y sale muchas cosas y al final not avaliable algo asi y se queda asi rato necesito ayuda.Intente muchas cosas de internet pero ninguna funciono si os sirve de informacion tengo un Acer Aspire 5630 tiene intel.
