• Laptop won't boot with both memory slots used

  I'm currently trying to upgrade my old Sony Vaio VGN-SZ1HP/B to 2GB of RAM. It already had 1GB of Crucial RAM in one of its slots, and one empty. I checked on Crucial.com and it confirms that each bank can hold 1GB of PC2-5300. The 1GB stick already installed was this, but Crucial's page recommended this... The two are identical from what I can make out, so I just ordered another one of the former. Unfortunately the machine refuses to even POST with both sticks installed. If I remove the old RAM from Slot 1 and replace it with the new RAM it runs fine. If I leave Slot 1 empty and put RAM (either stick) in Slot 2, it won't POST. Basically it seems that Slot 2 just isn't working properly. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem? Or maybe have any experience with this sort of thing with Sony Vaios? • how can i move my events in my ipod calendar to google? it won't let me move items from ipod to goog

  I've followed googles recommendations and steps for syncing my ipod touch, newest OS, with my google calendar. Sync works great when google calendar events are added or deleted on the marked for syncing calendar. They show up on my ipod. But when I make changes on the native Ipod touch calendar they are not reflected in the google calendar marked for syncing. What gives? I also have been unable to do an initial sync that would move my Ipod calendar events to my google calendar. Any suggestions?

  I'm trying to grep the output of ngrep. Unfortunately when I add another grep to the pipeline, I get no output at all. It can be some other command too - cat / grep / tee - everything breaks the chain. • How do I access site.project.rails (running on host) from VMWare fusion?

  I have a rails app setup and running on my snow leopard MacBook - the app is being served by Passenger. As part of the setup they had me add entries for 127.0.0.1 site.project.rails in my hosts file so I could reach the site from site.project.rails I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the app show up in VMWare. I have XP setup and browse to http://site.project.rails and I can't get it to show up. I setup a basic rails app, being served at localhost:3000 by webrick, I can get that to load by visiting my hosts ip (http://192.168.1.1:3000/). I added the same hosts I added on my Mac to Windows. I also Bridged the network under settings for the VM. What am I missing?

• Is there way to scan a registry hive on an attached USB drive?

  I have a hard drive with a virus that I removed from a PC. I can scan the file system of it as an attached USB drive. But how do I scan the registry of that USB drive since it is not booted up like a regular hard drive? Thank you EDIT: To clarify, the USB drive was a regular hard drive in a PC that got infected. I cannot boot into the OS to run a scan. I removed it to attach it to a working PC so I can scan its file system. But, I cannot scan the registry of that hard drive because that drive is not booted up. The hard drive was a regular XP hard drive install that I removed to scan as an attached drive (with an adapter to make it a USB drive.)

• I run a command twice - I'm wondering if it'll be a problem

I opened the conf.d folder in Nautilus, but there isn't a splash file nor directory. I expected a file to be there with FRAMEBUFFER=y inside but there isn't. Is this going to be a problem?

  I've added my gmail account to Mail.app It worked find in previous days, and downloaded thousands of previous mails. But now, it can't connect to gmail server for days. What's the matter here?   I've looked on Asus's website, but they don't make it easy to understand what the differences are, and there's so many models to choose from! It's all spiel, and endless specs. How is anybody supposed to rifle through so much detail in order to make note of minor differences?   I have umpteen backups trying to restore my scripts I had in the netlogon share but when I go to them the folder is empty. Does backup not back those scripts in netlogon up? • Software/FakeRAID: Windows 8 Disk Mirroring vs Intel Onboard

  So Windows 8 is out and I have a new motherboard. I wish to create a RAID 1 coupling between two HDDs -- for storage purposes only (my OS is on an SSD) -- but I don't know which is the best route to take. My motherboard (Z77 chipset) comes with the age old Intel Fake RAID, but since I only wish to use my RAID for storage, I wondered if I might be better to use Windows 8 Disk Mirroring. Can anyone advise which is better? Or perhaps the pros and cons of each, if that's too contentious? I just can't see the benefit of FakeRAID.   I am using the server admin tool for the web and see where I can create sites with the +. I thought that was creating virtual directory but it doesn't seem to be. I need a site that uses port 80 but is like http://myserver/myvirtual instead of http://myserver which is what this one with the + does. how do I make a virtual directory with the tool like in IIS?   Hi, How can I have it where I have one IP address that sits on the Internet but many web names? For example, when a hosting company has a shared IP but I get unlimited domain names (along with everyone else on that box). I have a box on the Internet but I want to point to another machine that holds a different website when someone types in the different www...(it's sitting right next to it in just a different box). After clicking that EasyBCD told me to add Win 8 entry via Add Entry Menu so i did. After restart, win 8 would not start. Neither would recovery F11. Attempts i made to Restore : Ran boot-repair from ubuntu live cd several time. Used Win8 system recovery disc created via virtualbox with win 8 preview iso. Automated repair from Win8 system recovery disc Ran following commands from cmd started from Win8 system recovery disc bootrec /fixmbr Result : Success message bootrec /rebuildbcd Result : after hitting (Y) "The requested system device cannot be found" System refresh started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that device is locked. System reset started from Win8 system recovery disc gives error that required partition or device is missing or not accessible. Used automated repair from EasyRE disc. It gave success message. Used Fix boot problem from Macrium reflect winPE repair disc. Copied Recovery partition to usb. Booting from usb gave this error Your PC needs to be repaired. Error Code : 0XC000000f Press Enter to try again Press F8 for Startup Settings F8 & Enter does nothing I cannot install WIn7 or Win 8, error it gives : "windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."

• postfix, webmin installed. whats next?

  Im trying to get imap running and dont know the problem. i a developer, not a network guy.( our network guy left) we had postfix installed already for outgoing mail on 8 domains. we only had incoming on 1 domain. but that mail server is located on a different ip. now we want incoming on another domain, but we dont want it on another ip, we want it on the same ip as the website itself. I installed dovecot today because my hosting company said i needed it. it seems to run fine. do i need dovecot AND postfix? or are they the same thing? dovecot does not show up anywhere in webmin what i cant seem to figure out how to do is add a user email so i can try to telnet in on port 143. i think i have evrything installed, just need the next step.... sorry for the newb question

• Are less domains better than more domains in active directory?

  A colleague of mine wants to add a domain to our forest. He said it would be good for security. I believe him but I have no idea why it is any better than with just one domain. I read this on Wikipedia but it has no source: "Microsoft recommends as few domains as possible in Active Directory and a reliance on OUs to produce structure and improve the implementation of policies and administration." • Windows-to-linux: Putty with SSH and private/public key pair

  I spent about 3 hours trying to figure out how to connect to a linux box from my windows machine using putty without having to send the password. This is connecting to an Ubuntu server that is using OpenSSH. The private key is SSH-2 RSA, 1024 bits. I am connecting using SSH2. I have run into the more common problems already: Putty generated the public key in the "wrong format". I have corrected this (as seen on this blog post). However, since I am not yet connected, I cannot absolutely confirm that this file is in the correct format. The key is all on a single line now, and I have tried adding/removing line breaks at the end of the file. I've also tried the public file doctoring process a few times to ensure that I haven't flubbed up the manual conversion. Even so, I have no way to verify accuracy here. The permissions were at once point wrong as well, specifically meaning that the file had too many permissions. I had to solve this too and I know it got past this because I no longer see a related error in /var/log/auth.log. I've tried both authorized_keys and authorized_keys2 in case the server has an old version of OpenSSH, but this changed nothing. I do have access as a user. After this keyfile stuff fails, I can enter my password instead The only remaining nibble of information I have is that it claims I have the alleged password wrong: sshd[22288]: Failed password for zzzzzzz from zz.zz.zz.zz port 53620 ssh2 Even so, as far as I can tell, this is just a lazy try/catch somewhere, since I don't think there's a password involved at all. I see nothing else in any of the /var/log files of use. What else could be wrong?

  Hello. I have a friend who's put himself in that age-old position: His OS partition has turned out to be too small for his needs. He'd really like to be able to repartition his harddrive without formatting it. In the past Partition Magic would have leapt to mind, but apparently Symantec bought that in 2003 and never updated it (and then officially discontinued it). Is there a "modern day" Partition Magic that every uses for desperate situations like this, that also works under Windows 7? Thanks

  I am trying to check that if I buy a new internal HDD it will work in the NAS I am buying. Currently I'm confused about naming schemes and once that is resolved whether there is compatibility. I will gladly author this question to be more general if there is not already an article helping with the confusion of SATA naming and standards. I see similar, but not identical questions and will accept this as a duplicate if thought as such. The specifications on the eCommerce site for the NAS says, "Controller Interface Type Serial ATA-150", the product home page for the manufacturer says, "Compatible with SATA and SATA II HDD". The specifications on the eCommerce site for the hard drives say, "Interface Type Serial ATA-300", the product home page for the manufacturer says, "Interface SATA 3.0 Gbps" Wikipedia says many things about different naming conventions, the closest being, "SATA II 3.0 Gbit/s, which was colloquially referred to as "SATA 3G" [bps] or "SATA 300" [MB/s] since 1.5 Gbit/s SATA I and 1.5 Gbit/s SATA II were referred to as both "SATA 1.5G" [b/s] or "SATA 150" [MB/s]). Therefore, they will operate with negligible differences between them." Are SATA II and SATA 3.0 Gbps the same? I feel I'm tantalisingly close to getting a definitive answer here before I purchase, but really want to clear up these naming schemes.
