  • Dell PowerEdge 2950 III running XenServer with 2 VMs gets sluggish after a week and needs rebooted?

    It has weird hangs and then random CPU spikes that do a ton at once. While remoted into the VMs I get an update all at once then it hangs for another 20 seconds. When it lets it go through I get a CPU spike. Basic server specs for the HW node is: 8 CPUs, 16GB ram 1TB HDD total iPERC6 raid 10 The VMs are barely used but I have them spec'd at VM 1: 4 CPUs, 4GB Ram VM2: 4 CPUs 6GB ram The HW node currently says it's total CPU usage is 11% AND Used Memory is at 63%out of 16GB I'm new to this stuff so I'm not sure. I just recently installed this and set it all up. Please advise if you can!

  • ASP Guidance - Development on laptop with limited internet access (nonhosted)

    I am fairly experienced with the .NET family of languages, as well as web development (from a PHP perspective.) I am home for winter break and have limited internet access but would like to learn ASP using C#. Am I able to do development for ASP (and see the results) for free on my laptop (with no internet access), and if so what tools do I need? Ideally I'd like to do development in Visual Studio and see the results in my browser via localhost. Extra tools I might need would be helpful as well.

  • Which kind of memory do I need for this laptop?

    I'm trying to upgrade the RAM in my laptop. It has two slots, but only 1 is filled with a 4gb stick, so I am looking for another 4gb to stick in the other slot. It is a HP g6-1d38dx. I found this RAM, 9-9-9-24, but it is 1333mhz. Looks like it says my max bandwith on the stock stick is 800MhZ. Would that still be cool to use since it is more than the max? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820576005 Also will mixing and matching brands have much of an effect? Can someone link a proper module for my machine?

  • Why does my general frame rate slow down to 40fps randomly?

    This has been bugging me for a while. Every once in a while, I find my computer to be sort of laggy and I thought it was because it was busy or something. However, I recently noticed that it wasn't any performance issue...I thought my computer was laggy because the frame rate slowed from 75fps right down to ~40 fps and caused very visible tearing. This is not rare. It happens many, many times a day. I have no idea what is happening...I have an AMD 5670 on Windows 7 32-bit by the way, and I've heard bad things about AMD's driver support. Could this be the problem? P.S. The frame rate slowdown is not just for games (I rarely play games, and have not played games in the time since I noticed this problem), it seems it's an issue for the entirety of Windows. I first noticed the tearing when I was moving around tabs in Google Chrome.

  • Share wired internet connection of windows 7 pc to iPad via bluetooth?

    At my work, we have wireless... but our desktops are wired. The wireless in the building is sparse and horrible and my iPad has an unstable wifi connection to it. However, I was wondering since my iPhone is capable of sharing internet to my iPad via bluetooth protocol, if my PC could somehow reproduce that same protocol and allow the iPad to do the same? I'd love it if my iPad had a stable connection via bluetooth when it's just sitting near my desktop. Please advise! Thanks!

  • Uploading my ITunes music that I saved on a flash drive to ITunes on my new computer then downloading it to my Ipod Touch

    I had an old computer with Windows XP. I transferred all my music, at least I hoped I had to a flash drive. Also, my computer kept giving me error messages that it could no longer sync to my Ipod Touch First Generation. I reformatted my Ipod back to original factory specs on the old computer. I have a new computer with Windows 7. I can't transfer my music from my flash drive to the ITunes Library. I also can't transfer it to my Ipod. I keep getting the message "Songs cannot be added to the Ipod because all of its space has been reserved for data." There's nothing in the Ipod memory. It's clear. What can I do? I want my music back.

  • Preferred method for allowing unprivileged UNIX/Linux users to view syslog information

    I have some non-privileged "role accounts" that need the ability to view [some of] the local syslogs (eg. /var/log/messages) for debugging purposes. This is explicitly local log data, not remote syslog, logstash, etc. Obviously, there's several ways to address this issue. What I'd like to know is if there is a fairly "standardized" way to solve this issue. Typically, I solve this problem with sudo but either POSIX groups or acls is attractive as it's few chars for the users to type and it removes entries from the sudo log. However, I don't believe I've ever seen that done before. What is your experience? How do large install base sites address this?

  • vSwitch configuration with 12 uplinks

    I have been doing a lot of research on vSwitch configurations, but I think I am more confused now after all of the reading that I have done. So here is my situation 3 ESX Hosts (12 nics each), 1 iSCSI SAN, 2 Force 10 switches. Should I create individual vSwitches for MGMT, vMotion, VM, and SCSI traffic? or do I need to group anything together in the same vSwitch? I am going to have 4 vLANS total, one for each of those items, do I need to do any trunking on the physical switch or just assign the correct vLAN to each physical switch port?

  • SSD: NTFS vs EXT4

    Always when I read about SSD usage under Linux, the advice is to disable journalling in Ext4 (or use Ext2), since it's too bad for your SSD. But in all articles about SSD tweaks for Windows, I never see any mentions that you should disable NTFS journalling, or that you should stick to FAT32. I know Ext4's journaling is more advanced, but is it so much more damaging to a SSD than that of NTFS? Or are Linux users just a little bit more cautious?

    I was trying to install another OS (ubuntu) on my laptop which already had a windows 7 installation. During the Ubuntu installation, I mistakenly clicked on the first option which was to erase the disk and install. It was only after the installation, that I realized the mistake. My question is how can I recover my original files from the windows installation even though I accidentally reformatted and installed Ubuntu?

There are so many abstract concepts and syntactic nuances we encounter daily, and yet we still manage to remember enough information to be productive. The memory palace may help in remembering someone's name or a random story but are there any memorization techniques that can better aid programmers?

Last week, I spoke with Lead Data Analyst with Amway Global Sales, Dan Arganbright, and IT Manager with Amway BI Competency Center, Mike Olson, about their upcoming presentation at Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco. Scheduled during a prime speaking slot on Monday, October 1 at 12:15pm in Moscone West, 2007, Dan and Mike will discuss their experience building Amway’s Distributor Consulting solution, powered by Oracle BI EE. As background, Amway offers people an opportunity to own their own businesses and consumers exclusive products in health and wellness, beauty and home care.  The Amway internal Sales organization is charged with consulting leadership-level Distributors to help them with data insights and ultimately grow their business. The Distributor Consulting solution provides over 40 metrics for Sales staff to provide data-driven insights on the Distributors and organizations they support.  Using Oracle BI EE, Exadata, and Oracle Data Integrator, Amway provides customized and personalized business intelligence, and the Oracle BI EE dashboards were developed by the Amway Sales organization, which demonstrates business empowerment of the technology. Amway is also leveraging the power of BI to drive business growth in all of its markets.  A new set of Distributor Segmentation metrics are enabling a better understanding of distributor behaviors. A Global Scorecard that Amway developed provides key metrics at a market and global level for executive-level discussions. Product Analysis teams can now highlight repeat purchase rates, product penetration and the success of CRM campaigns. In the words of Dan and Mike, the addition of Exadata 11 months ago has been “a game changer.”  Amway has been able to dramatically reduce complexity, improve performance and increase business productivity and cost savings. For example, the number of indexes on the global data warehouse was reduced from more than 1,000 to less than 20.  Pulling data for the highest level distributors or the largest markets in the company now can be done in minutes instead of hours.  As a result, IT has shifted from performance tuning and keeping the system operational to higher-value business-focused activities. •       “The distributors that have been introduced to the BI reports have found them extremely helpful.     Trying to create a new instance of the "MortgageData" object. Professor said to use: ClassName InstanceName = New ClassName(arg1, arg2, arg3, arg4); I Used MortgageData somethingsomething = New MortgageData(ID,principal,apr,term); Keep getting Error CS1002: ; Expected with the class name after new underlined in red. I'm using visual studio 2008. Not sure what to do.
