• Fix corrupt NTFS partition without Windows

  MY NTFS Partition has gotten corrupt somehow (it's a relic from the days when I had Windows installed). I'm putting the debug output of fdisk and blkid here. At the same time, any OS is unable to mount my root partition, which is located next to my NTFS partition. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, though. My attempt to run fsck results in the following : ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fsck /dev/sda fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010) fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks... fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> Update : I was able to fix the NTFS partition running chkdsk off HBCD, but it seems that the superblock problem still remains. *Update 2: * Fixed superblock issue using e2fsck -c /dev/sda5

• Fix invalid objects and components - BEFORE you upgrade!

  We are currently running a Tech Challange Workshop with 25 Oracle consultants and support folks from all over EMEA. We call it Tech Challange because we seperate these experts having between 5 and 20 years of Oracle experience into 5 groups - and each group has to complete their special challange such as moving a database from 10.2 to Exadata V2 or upgrading from single instance 10.2 to Real Application Clusters 11.2 with the new Grid Infrastructure. Actually we start this training with a bit presentation pieces about upgrades, Real Application Testing and Golden Gate. And one topic I always point out: Keep your database tidy before the upgrade!!! Clean up all invalid objects - especially in SYS and SYSTEM user schema BEFORE you upgrade. Use utlrp.sql to recompile invalid objects. Use Note:753041.1 to diagnose and fix invalid components. Do this always BEFORE you start the upgrade. Even if it may take some time. Otherwise your upgrade could fails or significant parts of the database packages could be invalid after the upgrade as well. I just came across this today as one group had ~240 invalid objects in the database - and due to the fact that the original system was still there could proof that the objects had been invalid before. Good job, BUT ... :-)

(TESTED ON 14.04) Open your terminal and type: sudo apt-get install v86d (TEST WITHOUT) Then: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Find this line: #GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 Add below (of course choose your resolution): GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x32 (TRY WITHOUT OR DIFFERENT BIT DEPTH) GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1920x1080x32 (YOU CAN ALSO USE THE KEEP OPTION) Save file and type in terminal: echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash (ALLOWS TO AVOID THAT THE SPLASH SCREEN IS DISPLAYED FOR A FEW SECONDS) sudo update-initramfs -u sudo update-grub2 For all those who complain about the presence of black borders in "plymouth", try to make these changes before installing the nvidia driver or switch back from nvidia to nouveau and from nouveau to nvidia. Kernel update from the Software Updater? It happened to me; I don't know if it matters. I don't know for which of these reasons, but after a few reboots, the black borders are gone.   I tried to use the FBX SDK (2011.3.1) to load FBX files and save them as Collada files in order to be able to import FBX files in Panda3D. Unfortunately the resulting Collada files are not usable for several reasons, among them: There's a Maya specific extra technique diffuse <diffuse> <texture texture="Map__2-image" texcoord="CHANNEL0"> <extra> <technique profile="MAYA"> <wrapU sid="wrapU0">TRUE</wrapU> <wrapV sid="wrapV0">TRUE</wrapV> <blend_mode>ADD</blend_mode> </technique> </extra> </texture> </diffuse> It assigns a texcoord channel name that isn't referenced anywhere else in the file (in the previous code sample, no geometry uses "CHANNEL0"...) Every polygon is exported twice, a first time with a basic material (only diffuse color, specular color, etc.) and a second time with a textured material -- this doubles the number of polygons of each model without any valuable reason Anyway, the resulting Collada file cannot be opened correctly either with OpenCOLLADA or Panda3D's "dae2egg". Anyone has any experience on how to "fix" it and make it understandable by common and well-reputed Collada importers such as OpenCOLLADA?

• Fix Package is in a very bad inconsistent state

  I can't update my system because it freezes while installing a third-party update (zramswap-enabler)!! Sometimes I get the following message in Update manager: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:The package zramswap-enabler needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. I tried to remove the zramswap-enabler, but it's impossible because I get the following message: dpkg: error processing zramswap-enabler (--remove): Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. Errors were encountered while processing: zramswap-enabler E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Actually i would really reinstall that package, but it is unable to do it! If i remove this third-party PPA then the system is warning me about a very very serious problem. So why can i not install/reinstall/remove/update this package and why freezes the updater if i try to update? -S O L U T I O N-: Okay! Finally i found the solution for this Problem! Step 1. Make sure that your PPA is correctly Step 2. Remove the broken package via the following command: sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq zramswap-enabler Step 3. install the package again (sudo apt-get install zramswap-enabler) Step 4. After restart (not necessary) you are able to install the updates correctly! Actually you can fix any "Package is in a very bad inconsistent state” Issues with this solution!!!

• How can I fix the "TERM environment variable not set" warning in eclipse

  I'm running ubuntu 12.04 LTS and working with eclipse (juno) on a c++ project. I keep getting "TERM environment variable not set" in the console while trying to run the program. I realize this means the variable needs to get set. My question is what should it be set to and how do I set it? I've read that it should be 'xterm' in a few places. So I added export TERM=xterm in my .profile and while eclipse stopped giving me the warning, instead it would output unreadable garbage everynow and then (not a side effect of the program). It did display the program output but intermixed were weird characters. This leads me to believe it's not 'xterm' I should be setting TERM to. Or I'm setting it in an incorrect way. Any help is appreciated. Sample output: **TERM environment variable not set.** Please make a selection ----------------------- 1. Create a budget 2. Edit a budget 3. Display a budget 4. Save a budget 5. Load a budget 6. Exit What is your selection: 1 **TERM environment variable not set.** Enter the name of your budget: etc The program continues to execute as expected but the message is highly annoying As someone has commented, I do use system("clear") which is likely the source of the warning? Either way, is this likely just an eclipse issue or something I can fix in ubuntu/linux

• LWJGL texture bleeding fix won't work

  I tried a lot of things to fix texture bleeding, but nothing works. I don't want to add a transparent border around my textures, because I already got too many and it would take too much time and I can't do it with code because I'm loading textures with slick. My textures are seperate textures and they seem to wrap on the other side (texture bleeding). Here are the textures that are "bleeding": The head, body, arm and leg are seperate textures. • 12.04 - How do I Fix Grub Error 15 on New Dual Boot Install

  I just installed 12.04 to Dual Boot (separate partitions) with an existing Win 7. Upon reboot after install things freeze after Grub 1.5 with a Grub Error 15 message. Is there any easy way to fix this? (I am posting this from my second computer) UPDATE: I managed to boot into both 12.04 and Win7 using BIOS: Selected the disk with the Win7 'C' Partition: resulted in the same error message Rebooted, tried the disk with the Ubuntu Partitions: *Grub Menu loaded: Managed to boot 12.04, rebooted, used BIOS again: Managed to boot Win 7 So, I have access to my computer again (thru BIOS), but this has been a pretty crappy install experience. Garth I used the the Final release 12.04 Ubuntu install disk, reformatted all Linux partitions, and expected a simple clean install. Other than specifying the Ubuntu Partitions, I did a basic install of 12.04. No way I did do anything to get this crap error failure! I have no idea why my install resulted in a Grub-15 error. CLOSED - Answered my own Question: I burned a RescuTux Disk and used it to recover grub2 (simplest and easiest way for me. http://www.supergrubdisk.org/category/download/rescatuxdownloads/ Garth

  Hi guys ive seen loads of posts on this site about poor 720/1080p playback in recent ubuntu versions I had this problem and fixed it so I thought id share it with everyone.... 1 install mplayer 2 install smplayer frontend {in software center} 3 open smplayer 4 go to "OPTIONS" then "PREFRENCES" then "GENRAL" 5 if you have a nvidia card choose "OUTPUT DRIVER" and select "VDPAU" {for ATI or AMD choose xv (0 - ATI Radeon AVIVO video) I dont know if this will work as my card is nvidia but it should) 6 go to performance on the left hand side and set both local and streaming cache to 99999 (this may also fix dvd playback if you set that cache aswell} 7 check the box for "ALLOW HARD FRAME DROP" and set "LOOP FILTER" to skip only on HD 8 Set the "THREDS FOR DECODING OPTION TO THE NUMBER OF CORES YOUR CPU HAS IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CPU ADD UP ALL THE CORES FOR BEST PERFORMANCE" 9 Enjoy you HD movies again on ubuntu...... I have a pretty avrage machine heres my spec.... 2x Pentium 4 ht 3 ghz Stock dell power and motherboard GFORCE 310 HDMI 24 inch full HD tv as a monitor so any one with dule core cpu should have no problems getting this to work. hope this helps someone out.

• Fix: Cant Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 from DVD

  If you installed Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit operating system, you may have trouble when you try ad add or remove functionality by inserting the disk (or remounting the ISO image).  I believe this is because of the path used to install the 32-bit Visual Studio program.  When you run the setup.exe off of the disk, you get this: Clicking on Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 brings up this dialog: But not long after it appears, it disappears to be replaced with: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components.  Canceling setup. FIX: Use Add or Remove Programs Launch the Add or Remove Programs dialog in Windows, and find Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite ENU (or whichever SKU you installed).  Click Uninstall/Change.  From here you should be able to change your installed components of Visual Studio successfully: Thanks to Brendan for the tip! • Colored Vertical Lines upon boot and nomodeset DOES NOT fix it

  I have installed Lubuntu 13.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, rebooted the machine and encountered this problem. I edited the GRUB configuration to remove "quite splash" and enter "nomodeset", updated grub, and everything was fine. I could reboot the machine without any trouble. However, if I unplug the machine, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in, the problem with the colored lines comes back and nomodeset no longer helps to solve the problem. I tried using radeon.modeset=0 instead of nomodeset and that also works on multiple reboots until I unplug the machine and plug it back in. I was finally able to get around the problem by entering "radeon.exapixmaps=0" instead of radeon.modeset=0. I suppose I kind of made up that boot option using some information from an Arch Wiki page. This would work throughout reboots and even if I unplugged the laptop. It was working fine for quite a while. A few weeks later, I had some unrelated issues with the Java iced-tea plugin, and since 13.10 had just come out, I thought I would try upgrading. So upgrading didn't fix the problem with Java, and after unplugging the machine and trying to use it later, I was back to this problem with the black screen and colored vertical lines. I am completely out of ideas on what to try. It took me a week to figure out how to get it working the first time, but the solution I had isn't working anymore.

• BusEnum2 and a Minor Bug Fix

  The default root bus driver, BusEnum, enumerate and active drivers one by one in synchronized manner. It is not only slowing the boot time but in the even if any of driver's init function (XXX_init) get hanged, the whole system won't boot at all. There is a sample of enhanced root bus driver, BusEnum2, on the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd187254.aspx The page provides the sample code and the detail explanation of the design concept. With multi-threaded BusEnum2 on CE7 with SMP enabled system, the scalability is even more significant. Since you have more than one processor and it can load drivers in parallel! Everything looks good so far, except to there is a small bug in the sample code. Fortunately, it is easy to fix. But hard to trace if you ever enc outer it! The BUSENUM2 flag only defined in BUSENUM2\BUSDEF\sources but not in BUSENUM2\BUSENUM\sources. The DeviceFolder is implemented in BUSENUM2\BUSDEF but the instance is created in BUSENUM2\BUSENUM\busenum.cpp, so the result is it allocates less memory than actual need.   Add   CDEFINES=$(CDEFINES) -DBUSENUM2   into BUSENUM2\BUSENUM\sources and the problem fixed!

• A fix for the design time error in MVVM Light V4.1

  For those of you who installed V4.1 of MVVM Light and created a project for Windows Phone 8, you will have noticed an error showing up in the design surface (either in Visual Studio designer, or in Expression Blend). The error says: “Could not load type ‘System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanging’ from assembly ‘mscorlib.extensions’” with additional information about version numbers. The error is caused by an incompatibility between versions of System.Windows.Interactivity. Because this assembly is strongly named, any version incompatibility is causing the kind of error shown here (for an interesting discussion on the strong naming issue, see this thread on Codeplex). I managed to resolve the issue for Windows Phone 8 and will publish a cleaned up installer next week. In the mean time, in order to allow you to continue development, please follow the steps: Download the new DLLs zip package (MVVMLight_V4_1_25_WP8). Right click on the Zip file and select Properties from the context menu. Press the “Unblock” button (if available) and then OK. Right click again on the zip package and select “Extract all…”. Select a known location for the new DLLs. Open the MVVM Light project with the design time error in Visual Studio 2012. Open the References folder in the Solution Explorer. Select the following DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.dll, GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.dll, Microsoft.Practices.ServiceLocation.dll and System.Windows.Interactivity.dll. Press “delete” and confirm to remove the DLLs from your project. Right click on References and select Add Reference from the context menu. Browse to the folder with the new DLLs. Select the four new DLLs and press OK. Rebuild your application, and open it again in Blend or in the Visual Studio designer. The error should be gone now. In the next few days, as time allows, I will publish a new MSI containing a fixed version of the DLLs as well as a few other improvements. • How to fix the boot set up?

  I got two OSes in my PC, Ubuntu and Windows 7. Until yesterday Windows 7 was on top of my dual-boot menu list, but I wanted to change it, so I went inside Windows configurations and put Ubuntu first, but I also set the time to 0 because I thought I could access Windows through Grub. But what happens is that after I upgraded Ubuntu to 11.10, that screen with boot options don't show Windows 7 anymore. I went online searching for a solution to my problem, most of them told me to configure some Grub options and others to use programs to do it. I've done them all and still can't access Windows 7. Just in case my problem is not clear yet, this is how was my boot order before I messed it all up: Windows 7 Ubuntu with a time of 10 secs to choose between both. This is how I wanted it to be: Ubuntu Windows 7 with 0 time to choose, but, inside Ubuntu I could access Windows through that Grub screen. But this is what happens: Ubuntu Windows 7 0 time, so it don't let me choose anything and jumps inside Ubuntu then inside Ubuntu grub doesn't show up anymore (black screen) and it starts Ubuntu normally. I tried to fix this many times from different ways inside Ubuntu but nothing worked, also when I try do something and then upgrade my grub with sudo upgrade-grub it shows this message: Generating grub.cfg ... Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Skipping Windows 7 (loader) on Wubi system Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-12-generic done Thats why in the title I said it could probably be my WUBI messing all up. Anyone heave a solution for this? Do you need more information? I have a netbook so I cannot use the Windows Repair CD.

  Sky doesn't seem to understand what their own errors mean, so I cobbled together an understanding from some other posts and managed to get it working.When you see the error [t6013-c1501] instead of your TV programme in Sky Go, it seems to mean:'You registered a device, but then changed the hardware, so now I'm confused!'In other words, the Digital rights management (DRM) used between Sky Go and Silverlight stored an old fingerprint of your PC, but rather than recognising this and allowing you to remove the device, it just disappears from the 'Manage Devices' page.DISCLAIMER: Perform the following steps at your own risk. It worked for me, but I didn't care if it broke stuff. If you care....don't do it!So, to fix this I did the following:1. Login to Sky Go and click 'Watch live TV' from the home page. It will attempt to show Sky News and fail with the error [t6013-c1501].2. Right click on the error and you should see the Menu option 'Silverlight'. Select this and a dialog should appear. Click the 'Application Storage' tab and delete any entry that relates to sky go. Clcik OK to close the dialog.3. Open explorer and navigate to the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady4. Rename the file mspr.hds to mspr.hds.OLD5. Go back to the browser and click F5. You may need to logout/login (not sure).Note: Don't rename/delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady or you will get the error [t6000-c1501].   so I recently had my question deleted and merged into a standard how to for blank screens. I am relatively new to This type of computer work and i don't understand the steps nessary to diagnose my problem well enough to solve it so this help full how to has me feeling helpless I can use Ctrl + Alt +F1 and log in So how do I use sudo commands to fix the blank screen on my old dell? sudo lsoci -nn tells me my video card is a ATI rage 128 pro ultra tf /var/log/Xorg.0.log tells me Permission denied that is all i get Sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity tried thay also have also tried Apt-get update and upgrade Please dont close this question without providing an actual answer or if you think it is an exact duplicate provide a solution that worked for that question. You will need to configure these your self how do i do that? I got this /var/log/failsafeX-backup-120909200641.tar as the location of my log files but i have no idea how to axcess sounds work in blank screen also screen responds or flashes after log in is typed and password entered really any help is good I don't even know where to start I believe 12.04 is installed and functioning but i don't think I can see it at the end of the error log it says error setting mtrr (base= oxf0000000, size= 0x01000000, type=1) inappropriate ioctl for device(25) i have tried to provide as much info as I understand how to provide

• Quick Fix for GlassFish/MySQL NoPasswordCredential Found

  Just the other day, I stood up a GlassFish 3.1.2 server in preparation for a new web app we've developed. Since we're using MySQL as the back-end database, I configured it for MySQL (driver) and created the requisite JDBC resource and supporting connection pool. Pinging the finished pool returned a success, and all was well. Until we fired up the app, that is -- in this case, after a weekend. Funny how things seem to break when you leave them alone for a couple of days. :-) Strangely, the error indicated "No PasswordCredential found". Time to re-check that pool. All the usual properties and values were there (URL, driverClass, serverName, databaseName, portNumber, user, password) and were populated correctly. Yes, the password field, too. And it had pinged successfully. So why the problem? A bit of searching online produced enough relevant material to offer promise. I didn't take notes as I was investigating the cause (note to self), but here were the general steps I took to resolve the issue: First, per some guidance I had found, I tried resetting the password value to nothing (using () for a value). Of course, this didn't fix anything; the database account requires a password. And when I tried to put the value back, GlassFish politely refused. Hmm. I'd seen that some folks created a new pool to replace the "broken" one, and while that did work for them, it seemed to simply side-step the issue. So I deleted the password property - which GlassFish allowed me to do - and restarted the domain. Once I was back in, I re-added the password property and its value, saved it, and pinged...success! But now to the app for the litmus test. The web app worked, and everything and everyone was now happy. Not bad for a Monday.  :-D Hope this helps, Mark

• SQL SERVER – Fix : Error 3623 – An invalid floating point operation occurred

  Going back in time, I always had a problem with mathematics. It was a great subject and I loved it a lot but I only mastered it after practices a lot. I learned that mathematics problems should be addressed systematically and being verbose is not a trick, I learned to solve any problem. Recently one of reader sent me an email with the title “Mathematics problem – please help!” and I was a bit scared. I was good at mathematics but not the best. When I opened the email I was relieved as it was Mathematics problem with SQL Server. My friend received following error while working with SQL Server. Msg 3623, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 An invalid floating point operation occurred. The reasons for the error is simply that invalid usage of the mathematical function is attempted. Let me give you a few examples of the same. SELECT SQRT(-5); SELECT ACOS(-3); SELECT LOG(-9); If you run any of the above functions they will give you an error related to invalid floating point. Honestly there is no workaround except passing the function appropriate values. SQRT of a negative number will give you result in real numbers which is not supported at this point of time as well LOG of a negative number is not possible (because logarithm is the inverse function of an exponential function and the exponential function is NEVER negative). When I send above reply to my friend he did understand that he was passing incorrect value to the function. As mentioned earlier the only way to fix this issue is finding incorrect value and avoid passing it to the function. Every mathematics function is different and there is not a single solution to identify erroneous value passed. If you are facing this error and not able to figure out the solution.   I received the following email from one of my readers. Dear Pinal, I am new to SQL Server and our regular DBA is on vacation. Our production database had some problem and I have just restored full database backup to production server. When I try to apply log back I am getting following error. I am sure, this is valid log backup file. Screenshot is attached. [Few other details regarding server/ip address removed] Msg 3117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to roll forward. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally. Screenshot attached. [Removed as it contained live IP address] Please help immediately. Well I have answered this question in my earlier post, 2 years ago, over here SQL SERVER – Fix : Error : Msg 3117, Level 16, State 4 The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward. However, I will try to explain it a little more this time. For SQL Server database to be used it should in online state. There are multiple states of SQL Server Database. ONLINE (Available – online for data) OFFLINE RESTORING RECOVERING RECOVERY PENDING SUSPECT EMERGENCY (Limited Availability) If the database is online, it means it is active and in operational mode. It will not make sense to apply further log from backup if the operations have continued on this database. The common practice during the backup restore process is to specify the keyword RECOVERY when the database is restored. When RECOVERY keyword is specified, the SQL Server brings back the database online and will not accept any further log backups. However, if you want to restore more than one backup files, i.e. after restoring the full back up if you want to apply further differential or log backup you cannot do that when database is online and already active. You need to have your database in the state where it can further accept the backup data and not the online data request. If the SQL Server is online and also accepts database backup file, then there can be data inconsistency. This is the reason that when there are more than one database backup files to be restored, one has to restore the database with NO RECOVERY keyword in the RESTORE operation. I suggest you all to read one more post written by me earlier. Sample Code for reference: RESTORE DATABASE AdventureWorks FROM DISK = 'C:\AdventureWorksFull.bak' WITH NORECOVERY; RESTORE DATABASE AdventureWorks FROM DISK = 'C:\AdventureWorksDiff.bak' WITH RECOVERY; In this post, I am not trying to cover complete backup and recovery. I am just attempting to address one type of error and its resolution. Please test these scenarios on the development server.
