  • Z600 Workstation ACPI Fan Noise

    - by dpb
    Hi -- I have an HP z600 workstation that has the FAN running full when idle. In fact, after the boot, the fan never slows down or varies. I looked in dmesg, and noticed this: [ 1.516778] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.516781] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.516786] ACPI: Marking method _OSC as Serialized because of AE_ALREADY_EXISTS error [ 1.519868] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.519872] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624638] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624642] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624726] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624729] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624802] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624805] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624895] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624898] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624977] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.624981] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.625070] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.625074] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.625153] ACPI Error (dsfield-0143): [CAPD] Namespace lookup failure, AE_ALREADY_EXISTS [ 1.625157] ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0._OSC] (Node ffff8801b8c4e3e0), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS Anyone know what could be done to fix this?

  • Fan always on and overheating problems on HP G62

    - by Dave
I have a HP G62 with i5 processor, 4G Ram and ATI HD 5470. Started using Ubuntu 4 months ago, first was 11.10 and after 12.04. Everything worked perfectly until some weeks ago when my cpu fan became "crazy" and I mean by this always on, noise and overheating problems, for sure if I put a glass with water in some minutes will boil (and I mean it). There can be a bug in the last kernel or any other Ubuntu's official update? And by the way CPU fan is cleaned like a new born baby; Used jupiter and all those stuff (lm-sensor, psensor...) - same problem; Don't ask me to install ATI drivers because will work like sh#t (interface laggy as HD 5470 isn't supported by Ubuntu) and I can't even open ATI Catalyst (error when I try to open it), more than this I always used open source drivers and as I said, worked perfectly (3d, effects). Right now I'm back to Windows and everything is working perfectly but my main problem is that I get used with Ubuntu and kinda weird to use windows again. I want back my nice and almost perfect Ubuntu. Thanks, Dave

  • System fans connected to a Gigabyte Z77-D3H motherboard do not increase in speed

    - by Andrew
The motherboard (Gigabyte Z77-D3H) controls my 3-pin CPU fan just fine. My system fans are a 3-pin fan (plugged into SYS_FAN1), and a 4-pin fan plugged into SYS_FAN3. All 3 of the system fan headers are 4-pin, but the user manual states that SYS_FAN1 is really a 3-pin header (that it can control the speed of a 3-pin fan) and the 4th pin is just a reserve. All my fans have a max RPM of 2000. Normally, all the fans run around 1000 RPMs when I'm not doing anything intensive. This proves that the motherboard can set the speed. However, when I run Folding@Home and my temperatures increase (around 70C) only the CPU fan increases to around 2000 RPMs. The system fans stay around 1000 RPMs. Through the BIOS I am able to disable the system fan control and the system fans then run at max RPMs (meaning the motherboard was doing something). I've updated the BIOS to the latest version and tried out Speedfan, but neither helped my situation. What I'd like is for the system fans to ramp up their RPMs as needed. Any thoughts? Tl;dr: My system (case) fans, but not my CPU fan, are always stuck around 1000 RPMs out of 2000 no matter the temperature.

  • Graphics card fan is loud (additional graphics card drivers cause problems)

    - by tk4muffin
Okay this explanation is a bit longer ... but I start at the beginning: I've been using Windows 7 for a very long time, shortly after the release of v12.10 I installed Ubuntu via Windows installer. Everything worked fine but the fan of the graphics card. After a bit of research I found out, that I just had to select a different driver (nvidia-current (proprietary, tested) worked pretty well). This also fixed some graphical bugs when I just logged into my account. Due to my university I got a MSDNAA-Account (allows me to download every Windows OS for free). I downloaded and installed Windows 8. After configuration I installed ubuntu via the Windows installer once again and the first couple launches of ubuntu went well. Suddenly ubuntu didn't launched anymore...caused by some hard-disk errors and had no clue what to do. So I kept working on Windows 8 - unfortunately. After playing around with the new Windows, I put my PC to sleep-mode. I couldn't wake my PC up and it wasn't responding to anything (neither mouse-movement, -clicks or keyboard strokes, nor the power-button and the reset-button worked), so I pulled the plug. Turns out, this was a huge mistake. Somehow the BIOS broke and after restarting a couple of times, the BIOS repaired itself. Neither Windows 8, nor ubuntu where bootable. Now I had to install ubuntu several times, because after rebooting unity was hidden and I didn't know what the problem was and how to fix it. I finally realized that this problem was caused by the graphics card driver, which I've changed to the nvidia-current (This dirver worked fine before my PC "crashed"). So I installed Windows 8 again and after a bit of usage I installed ubuntu once again (via DVD). The booting of ubuntu and windows works fine - so far. But I'm still not able to change the graphics card driver without unity hiding away after restarting the OS. The noisy fan is really disturbing my work... PC Specs: Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo COU E8400 @ 3GHz x2 Memory: 7.8 GB OS type: 64-bit Graphics Card: GeForce 9600 GT Motherboard: Asus P5Q I hope the information given are enough.

  • Super-silent (mid tower) case and fan combo

    - by Dennis G.
I want to build a HTPC for music/video/blu-ray playback (no gaming). I don't need an expensive HTPC case but just want to go with a standard medium tower case. However, I want it to be super silent so it doesn't make any annoying fan/disk noises when I watch movies. Ideally, it shouldn't make any noticeable noise at all. I understand that choosing a board, CPU and graphic card that run cool and don't consume a lot of power is important for designing a quiet machine, and I think I got that covered. However, there are so many choices in regards to cases, fans and power supplies that it's hard to get started. What are your recommendations for a case/fan (cpu+case)/power supply combination that run absolutely silent and can cool a standard Intel system with a low-power (possibly passively cooled) graphic card? I'm usually a fan of Antec cases, would an Antec Mini P180 be a good starting point? If so, which case fans, CPU fan and power supply would you recommend?

  • Generic socket 940 CPU fan interchangeable with HP part number 411454-001

    - by ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells
Hi, I'm trying to find a generic CPU fan that will fit the air duct in an XW9300. Note that there are two CPU fan mounting schemes used on this machine. One with two grommets in the motherboard that the CPU fan screws into and one with a plastic collar and base plate. The form factor I'm looking for is the former (see picture below): Two HP part numbers for fans in this form factor are 411454-001 (shown below) and 416055-001. Note that the dimensions are important as the machine has an air duct that fits over the fan. Can anyone tell me the manufacturer and model of an equivalent generic part? Better yet, do you know somewhere (preferrably in the UK) that I can obtain such an item from?

  • Cant get lm-sensors to load ATI Radeon temp or fan

    - by woody
New to Linux and having minor issues :/ . I followed this guide initially but did not recieve the proper output and did not show my ATI Radeon HD 5000 temp or fan speed. • Dell N7110 i7 overheats and doesn't boot when anything is plugged into the USB3 port

    - by Kostyantyn
When i plug in any devices (mouse, keyboard) into usb 3.0 system dell n7110 overheats and fan goes crazy with terrible noise. So i'm using 1 usb 2.0 slot now with a usb hub. It doesn't solve the problem completely but system stays at a low fan rate for a longer time. I've tried to lower CPU frequency, but in my case (DELL INSPIRON N7110 i7 on Linux 3.0.0-14-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 21 20:28:43 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) CPU was pretty cool (51 C) and still the same horrible fan noise. Looks like there is no such problems with ubuntu 10.04 (but there're some other problems). Ubuntu even doesn't boot if anything is plugged into usb 3.0

  • Vintage Fan Home Movie Captures the Filming of Return of the Jedi

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Back in 1982, Jeff Broz and a group of his friends heard the next Star Wars film was being shot out in the California desert so they did what any fan would do; they trekked out into the desert and crashed the set. In this 7 minute home video we’re treated to views of the set, actors at work, and other behind-the-scenes footage of the production of Return of the Jedi. It’s hard to imagine, given modern security practices and secrecy surrounding movies, that a bunch of kids could just walk onto a set and start filming these days. • Corsair Hydro i series cpu cooler fan control

    - by user214690
Im relatively new at Ubuntu and have found an answer to basically every single issue ive ever had thru this site... Otherthan this. I have been toying with the idea of a Corsair h80i for my dual boot system (win7/U12.10) and mostly use it in ubuntu. I have done some research on the interweb regarding fan control in linux and nearly ran up short untill I came across this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2096166.html And it seems to have worked around it. (altho I have not tested it for myself) Is there any program/library/source that can be used to control the fans without having to MacGuyver it??

  • How can I keep the cpu temp low?

    - by Newton
I have an HP pavilion dv7, I'm using ubuntu 12.04 so the overheating problem with sandybridge cpu is a lot better. However my laptop is still becoming too hot to keep on my legs. The problem is that the fan wait too much before starting, so the medium temp is too hight. When I'm using windows 7 the laptop is room-temperature cold, I've absolutely no problem. On windows the fan is always spinning very low & very silently so the heat is continuously removed, without reaching an unconfortable temp. How can I force the computer to act like that also on ubuntu? Note that many motherboards do not have pwm circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm. We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls. The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you physically verify that the fans have been to full speed after the program has completed. /usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed Is my case too desperate?

  • Throttle and overheating on Dell XPS Studio 1645

    - by Ross
I realise there is an older thread on the very subject but that seems to be pretty dead. I just got a Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop and the fan noise and overheating is pretty ridiculous. This is actually a well known problem with the laptop that is apparently solved with the combination of a BIOS update and the purchase of their 130w charger. I plan on buying this charger as soon as possible, however I've noticed that since installing Ubuntu the fan noise has became more permanent and the overheating is quite a bit worse too. I've had to turn it off twice to let it cool down for an hour or so because it starts seriously affecting the performance. It makes watching things, listening to music or leaving the laptop on while I sleep a real pain. If anyone has some new information on this issue or could help out in anyway at all I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

  • pwmconfig: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed"

    - by Sman789
I'm trying to reduce my fan speed with fancontrol and pwmanager because, despite the temperatures being the same, they are much louder on Linux (Ubuntu Gnome 14.04) than on Windows. I've followed the instructions in the first answer here but when running pwmanager I get pwmconfig: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed" I know that my system has working thermal sensors because PSensor has no trouble telling me my CPU temp and GPU temp. I would appreciate any help you can give in helping me reduce my fan speed to that of Windows (which uses the ASUS AI Suite 3 software which came with the Z87-A motherboard, if that's relevant).

  • Fans running very fast on MacBook Pro 8.1 ubuntu 12.04

    - by Tomasz Kacprzak
I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Macbook Pro 8.1 and one of the first things I noticed was that the fans were starting to spin very fast every few minutes for 10-30 sec and then going back to normal. That was happening even without any processor load, when completely idle. The fans were usually spinning at 4000 RPM and made much noise. The computer was not getting hotter than usual. When running OSX Lion there was no noise at all, fans almost all the time at 2000 RPM. I spent some time on it and found out that Precise uses a deamon to control the temperature, called macfanctld. You can use /etc/macfanctld.conf to set the configuration. I found out that the high fan speed is not due to the fact that the temperature is getting hot, but because there are two sensors which indicate wrong numbers (you can check that using 'sensors' command ): TW0P: +129.0°C TCTD: +256.0°C TCFC: +0.0°C TMBS: +0.0°C or setting the macfanctld log level to 2: Speed: 4992, *AVG: 56.9C, TC0P: 50.2C, TG0P: 51.5C, Sensors: TB0T:34 TB1T:34 TB2T:33 TC0C:58 TC0D:56 TC0E:59 TC0F:60 TC0P:50 TC1C:58 TC2C:58 TC3C:58 TC4C:57 TCFC:0 TCGC:57 TCSA:53 TCTD:256 TG0D:52 TG0P:52 THSP:42 TM0S:64 TMBS:0 TP0P:54 TPCD:60 TW0P:129 Th1H:51 Th2H:48 Tm0P:40 Ts0P:32 Ts0S:43 Moreover, TCTD was randomly jumping from temperatures of 0 to 256, so this may be the reason for unjustified random fan speeds. macfanctld is taking an average of the sensors including the values above, so the actual AVG temp used to control the fans is wrong, usually biased up, hence high RPM and noise. The workaround solution is to use an option in the macfanctld.conf which allows to ignore the malfunctioning sensors: exclude: 13 16 21 24 After reboot the reported temperatures are usually normal and the fans are working at reasonable speeds. I tested the response of the fans to heavy processor load by asking MATLAB to invert 10000x10000 matrix and the AVG temperature jumped to 63deg, and the fan to max 6200 RPM and then got it back to normal temperature. So I think it is safe so far. There is a expired bug about the failing sensor readings: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/955538 which may be good to open again. My question would be: does anyone know what the failing sensors do and if there is any danger in excluding them? Maybe some better solution to this problem?

  • In facebook connect, how can I check if a user is a fan of my facebook page? Is it possible to track

    - by Tony
I am trying to determine if a user is a facebook fan. I load the facebook JS library and initialize: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://static.ak.connect.facebook.com/js/api_lib/v0.4/FeatureLoader.js.php/en_US"></script> FB_RequireFeatures(["XFBML","Connect","Api"], function() { FB.init("my_api_key","xd_receiver.htm") }); FB.ensureInit(function () { FB.ApiClient.pages_isFan(my_profile_id,"some_UID",callback); }); However when I call the API client with FB.ApiClient.pages_isFan, I get a JS error - FB.ApiClient is undefined I am also using the FBML fan tag to display the "become a fan" button: <fb:fan profile_id="my_profile_id" stream="0" connections="10" logobar="1" width="300"></fb:fan> And would like to be notified when either the "become a fan" button is clicked or a user has successfully become a fan. The business logic is pretty simple - If they become a fan, track it in my database. Then if they try to become a fan again, check with the library if they are a fan and say "You are already a fan" if they are a fan, show the widget if not.

  • Fanpage/Application integration: how to post to a fan page from an application

    - by Typeoneerror
I have an existing client who has a fan page for their brand already. I need to create a Facebook Connect enabled website (so I'll be creating an application for it). I want the Facebook Connect application to post to the Fan page's wall as the brand. Is this possible? Is there a way to associate an application with a Fan page if I was an admin of both? Any direction would be much appreciated.

  • Adding my podcast to my Facebook fan page

    - by Donald Burr
I've set up a Facebook fan page for my podcast, Otaku no Podcast. I'd love to add a Flash based player to the fan page that can play the latest episode of my podcast. Or, at the very least, a link to the latest episode on my website (which has its own Flash-based audio player). My podcast's website of course exports a valid RSS feed. I've tried several different podcast player/RSS feed display applications including Podcast Pickle (which has a facebook app), but none of them appear to work and/or are maintained any more. Podcast Pickle used to work for me a long time ago, but is no longer working for me. Any ideas?
