• How do I use LibreOffice's 3d transitions in Impress?

  How can I get the 3D transitions working on Impress? I got a presentation coming soon, and as a requirement of the course the professor want us to use transitions on our "Power Point" chapter, obviously I have been using LibreOffice in every exercise but the native transitions are kind of lame, so when I install the newer version of Ubuntu, always install the extra package to the transitions - I had installed the 3D package: libreoffice-ogltrans 1:3.4.3-3ubuntu2 In previous versions of Ubuntu and worked perfectly, but for some reason is not working in this release. I got LibreOffice 3.4.3, Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) and my hardware is not relevant because I had it working before on previous releases. I know is not critical, but for my class is a pretty important deal, and can be a perfect opportunity to show the class that the cool stuff are not only in Windows. • LWJGL not working

  I'm working on a homework assignment to modify code given by my professor using LightWeight Java Game Library. The problem is that I can't fully load the test code to begin testing modifications. I've linked against the jar file as it says to in the modifications, but I still have one lingering error. The import statement import org.lwjgl.util.glu.*; Cannot be resolved, so I have errors on the following lines, spread throughout the code: textures[0] = GLApp.makeTexture("green.bmp"); GLU.gluPerspective(45.0f, (float)Display.getDisplayMode().getWidth() / (float)Display.getDisplayMode().getHeight(), 0.1f, 100.0f); GLU.gluLookAt(cameraX, cameraY, cameraZ, lookX, lookY, lookZ, 0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f);` Any ideas on what is going wrong?

• The relationship between OPC and DCOM

  Hi all, I am trying to grasp the link between OPC and DCOM. I have watched all four of the tutorials here and I think I have a good feeling for what OPC is, but in one of the tutorials (the third one 35 seconds in) the narrator states that OPC is based on DCOM, but I do not understand how the two are really linked. My confusion comes from a question my professor posed in which he asked "How and where would you deploy OPC instead of DCOM and vice-versa." His question makes it seem like the two are not as linked as my research suggests. I'm not looking for anyone to answer the question, I just want to know the relation between OPC and DCOM, then I can figure the rest out. Specifically I would like to know if: 1.) One is always based on the other 2.) One can always be deployed without the other.

The professor wants an array setup with a txt file with the following format. 2 of hearts 2 of diamonds 2 of spades 2 of clubs 3 of hearts 3 of diamonds 3 of spades This goes on till face cards when it replaces the number with jack, queen, king, ace. • Linux bash: when to use egrep instead of grep?

  Hi all : I am preparing for a Linux terminal assessment now, I tried to Google and found most resources are referring to the basic "grep" rather than the more powerful "egrep" -- well, that is at least what the professor said in lecture. I am always working with small samples so performance tuning is a thing too far away. So basically I'd like to know are there any areas where I must switch to egrep to do it in a better way? Is it safe to work with basic "grep" as for now? will there be potential risks? Sorry about my limited knowledge on Linux shell commands, the man page looks like a maze to me and honestly I haven't put much time in understanding all the features both command provide.

  i have designed an er model and then normalized it till the BCNF and converted it into tables using vs08. my problem is i do not know from where to get the normalized database checked to see if it has no mistakes in normalization- can not be further normalized. please do not give answers such as- ask a friend- ask your professor- do not have these resources available- it is very very hard and really time consuming waiting for the relevant person to be available. so are there any sites from where i can ask help from other designers- people like you to check the normalized database? please note:- it should be free, sorry for accept rate, was not aware of accepting the answers, all the help is appreciated thank you

• Substring and its reverse in a string

  My professor was talking about this in a Dynamic programming class and asked us to think over it. She gave us some examples as well. Given a string, we were to find the longest continuous subsequence whose reverse is also a subsequence present in the given string. Example: INPUT: pqrstuvtsrv OUTPUT: i=3, k=2 rst -> tsr (rst found first at i=3 and for 2 more positions) INPUT: mpqrsrqp OUTPUT: i=2, k=6 pqrsrqp in reverse INPUT: mmpqssss OUTPUT: i=5, k=3 I thought of putting the string and its reverse into 2 different arrays and comparing character by character. But I'm sure this is not the best way to do it. Any suggestions as to what could be the most efficient ?

• CSS : overflow : auto will not work under FireFox 3.6.2

  Hello everyone: This is a CSS related question, I got one good answer from my previous question, which suggested to use some CSS code like overflow:auto together with a fixed height container. And here is my actual implementation : on uni server Please follow the instructions on screen and buy more than 4 kinds of tickets. If you are using IE8, Opera, Safari, Chrome, you would notice that the lower right corner of the page now has a vertical scroll bar, which scrolls the content inside it and prevent it from overflowing. That's what I want to have in this section. Now the problem is, this would not do in FireFox 3.6.2. Am I doing something not compliant to the CSS standard or FireFox has its own way of overflow control? You can inspect the elements on screen, and all controlling functions are done in one javascript using jQuery. All CSS code are kept in a separated file as well. According to the professor, FireFox would be the target browser, although the version was set to 2.0...

• How to do a sample rate conversion in Windows (and OSX)

  I am about to write an audio file converter for my side job at the university. As part of this I would need sample rate conversion. However, my professor said that it would be pretty hard to write a sample rate converter that was both of good quality and fast. On my research on the subject, I found some functions in the OSX CoreAudio-framework, that could do a sample rate conversion (AudioConverter.h). After all, an OS has to have some facilities to do that for its own audio stack. Do you know a similar method for C/C++ and Windows, that are either part of the OS or open source? I am pretty sure that this function exists within DirectX Audio (XAudio2?), but I seem to be unable to find a reference to it in the MSDN library.

• OpenMP + SSE gives no speedup

  Hi, My Professor found out this interesting experiment of 3D Linearly separable Kernel Convolution using SSE and OpenMP, and gave the task to me to benchmark the statistics on our system. The author claims a crazy 18 fold speedup from the serial approach! Might not be always, but we were expecting at least a 2-4 times speedup running this on a Dual Core Intel. http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/16bit-3d-convolution-sse4openmp-implementation-on-penryn-cpu/#comment-41994 Alas, we could find exactly no speedup. The serial code performs always better, with or without OpenMP. I am using Linux, and observed a certain trend...when no other processes are running on the system, after a while the loadavg starts increasing, and the the %CPU utilization falls down. Another probable false positive which I ran into accidentally...I started the program, then immediately paused it. Then I ran it on background with bg, and saw a speedup of more than 2. • Architectural decision : QT or Eclipse Platform ?

  We are in the process of designing a tool to be used with HDEM(High Definition Electron Microscope).We get stacks of 2D images from HDEM and first step is 'detecting borders' on the sections.After detecting edges of 2D slices ,next step is construct the 3D model using these 2D slices. This 'border detecting' algorithm(s) is/are implemented by one of professor and he has used and suggests to use C.(to gain high performance and probably will parallelise in future) We have to develop comprehensive UI ,3D viewer ,2D editor...etc and use this algorithm. Application should support usual features like project save/open.Undo,Redo...etc Our technology decisions are: A) Build entire platform from the scratch using QT. B) Use Eclipse Platform Our concerns are, if we choose A) we can easily integrate the 'border detecting' algorithm(s) because the development environment is C/C++ But we have to implement the basic features from the scratch. If we choose B) we get basic features from the Eclipse platform , but integrating C libraries going to be a tedious task. Any suggestions on this?

• How do you go from an abstract project description to actual code?

  Maybe its because I've been coding around two semesters now, but the major stumbling block that I'm having at this point is converting the professor's project description and requirements to actual code. Since I'm currently in Algorithms 101, I basically do a bottom-up process, starting with a blank whiteboard and draw out the object and method interactions, then translate that into classes and code. But now the prof has tossed interfaces and abstract classes into the mix. Intellectually, I can recognize how they work, but am stubbing my toes figuring out how to use these new tools with the current project (simulating a web server). In my professors own words, mapping the abstract description to Java code is the real trick. So what steps are best used to go from English (or whatever your language is) to computer code? How do you decide where and when to create an interface, or use an abstract class?

• Simplest way of creating java next/previous buttons

  I know that when creating buttons, like next and previous, that the code can be somewhat long to get those buttons to function. I see that the fillTextFields(false) uses a boolean value and that you need to initialize that boolean value in the beginning of the code I believe. I had put private fillTextFields boolean = false; but this does not seem to be right... I'm just hoping someone could explain it better. Thanks :)

Although, the professor is ok with that, I do want to get it working faster and to avoid unnecessary compiling. Here's what I have. Friend of Node. SetIter.cpp - gets a set and uses a pointer to iterator through I'm confused with some of the depencies arising from the friends thing and the point of lib.o being included in the Makefile as some sites have.   Here's a homework problem: Is L_4 Regular? Let L_4 = L*, where L={0^i1^i | i>=1}. I know L is non-regular and I know that Kleene Star is a closed operation, so my assumption is that L_4 is non-regular. However my professor provided an example of the above in which L = {0^p | p is prime}, which he said was regular by proving that L* was equal to L(000* + e) by saying each was a subset of one another (e in this case means the empty word). So his method involved forming a regex of 0^p, but how I can do that when I essentially have one already?

• Backdoor Strategy- opinion needed.

  I'm creating an application to track publications and grants for a university. Professors will need to put they CV into the system when it is up and running. Yeah, right. The person in charge is planning on hiring someone to input all of the information, but my questions is how? The strategy I'm thinking of is to install a backdoor. The lucky undergrad can log in as any professor using the backdoor. Once all the data is removed, the backdoor can be removed. Doing so would probably be as simple as editing out a comment in the config file. The IT guys would still have access, but since they control the machines, they would have access anyway. Are there any flaws to this strategy?

  For our first assignment in a System Security class, we have to hack into the professors "cheaply organized" sql database. I know the only user is "admin" and the select statement generated in the php is: select user_id from user where user_username = 'admin' AND user_password = md5('noob') I am having a number of problems attempting to bypass the password part of this statement as the professor has some javascript embedded in the page to sanitize the username and password of any non-alphanumeric values. This can be bypassed by turning off javascript :P but any values sent still get cleaned by the operating system (some build of Debian 32-bit). I've seen the code for the login request and it does not escape any characters. How do I bypass the operating systems escape sequences?

I'm planning to develop it in .NET with an Oracle database, though my dilemma is that my professor says that if I do so, there would be a lot of support issues later on. He says .NET is more compatible with MS SQL and MS Access, and so is the trend, everyone does it.Is it true? • How to run a .class file in Windows 7 OS?

  Hi, This is probably a stupid question, but how do I run a class file on windows 7? I usually create my own .java files and then use a basic IDE (with JDK6) to compile it to a class and run it automatically. My professor gave a .class file that we are supposed to play with extensively but I have no idea how to to run it here. Note that I cannot run it by typing: java classname.class because it contains gui stuff especially buttons and such. • Keeping track of threads when creating them recursively

  I'm currently working on some code for my Programming Languages course. I can't post the code but I'm permitted to talk about some high level concepts that I'm struggling with and receive input on them. Basically the code is a recursive DFS on a undirected graph that I'm supposed to convert to a concurrent program. My professor already specified that I should create my threads in the recursive DFS method and then join them in another method. Basically, I'm having trouble thinking of how I should keep track of the threads I'm creating so I can join all of them in the other method. I'm thinking an array of Threads but I'm unsure how to add each new thread to the array or even if that's the right direction.
