  • Grouping data in LINQ with the help of group keyword

    While working with any kind of advanced query grouping is a very important factor. Grouping helps in executing special function like sum, max average etc to be performed on certain groups of data inside the date result set. Grouping is done with the help of the Group method. Below is an example of the basic group functionality.     int[] numbers = { 5, 4, 1, 3, 9, 8, 6, 7, 2, 0 };         var numberGroups =         from num in numbers         group num by num % 5 into numGroup         select new { Remainder = numGroup.Key, Numbers = numGroup };  In the above example we have grouped the values based on the reminder left over when divided by 5. First we are grouping the values based on the reminder when divided by 5 into the numgroup variable.  numGroup.Key gives the value of the key on which the grouping has been applied. And the numGroup itself contains all the records that are contained in that group. Below is another example to explain the same. string[] words = { "blueberry", "abacus", "banana", "apple", "cheese" };         var wordGroups =         from num in words         group num by num[0] into grp         select new { FirstLetter = grp.Key, Words = grp }; In the above example we are grouping the value with the first character of the string (num[0]). Just like the order operator the group by clause also allows us to write our own logic for the Equal comparison (That means we can group Item by ignoring case also by writing out own implementation). For this we need to pass an object that implements the IEqualityComparer<string> interface.     I have a XAML based ContextMenu bound to the rows in a datagrid. It works just fine - until the grid is scrolled! The ICommand is CreateReminderCommand and the CommandParameter is bound to the data item for the row itself. This works just fine - I can right click on a row and it will show me the correct text in the menu item 'Create Reminder for order 12345'. Then I scroll the datagrid down a page. If I keep right clicking on items then suddenly I'll see the wrong order number for a row. I think what must be happening is this : The DataGrid is reusing instances of MenuItem that it has previously created. How can I force a refresh of the ContextMenu when it is displayed for an item that changes? There's no 'Update method on the ContextMenu or ContextMenuService.

  • Difficulty Inserting from HTML form into MySQL (created in Workbench)

    I created a MySQL database in Workbench 5.2.35 for purposes of storing and using information submitted in html forms but I'm having difficulty inserting records from the html form. The relevant SQL script was saved as Demo2.sql, the schema is C2F, and the table is customer_info. I wasn't sure if that was the problem, so I tried replacing the database name (Demo2) with the schema name, but that didn't work either.     So I have PHP script running on cron daily. It is suppose to check the date and send an email if it is 7 days before any payments as a reminder. I haven't used PHP in a long time so sorry if the way I did it was ridiculous or something. Thanks a lot.   • Create Rails model with argument of associated model?

    I have two models, User and PushupReminder, and a method create_a_reminder in my PushupReminder controller (is that the best place to put it?) that I want to have create a new instance of a PushupReminder for a given user when I pass it a user ID. I have the association via the user_id column working correctly in my PushupReminder table and I've tested that I can both create reminders & send the reminder email correctly via the Rails console. Here is a snippet of the model code: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :pushup_reminders end class PushupReminder < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end And the create_a_reminder method: def create_a_reminder(user) @user = User.find(user) @reminder = PushupReminder.create(:user_id => @user.id, :completed => false, :num_pushups => @user.pushups_per_reminder, :when_sent => Time.now) PushupReminderMailer.reminder_email(@user).deliver end I'm at a loss for how to run that create_a_reminder method in my code for a given user (eventually will be in a cron job for all my users).   • Stop Outlook from acting on IMAP Alerts

    I have an IMAP server which sets an "account approaching quota" alert when an account is above 85%. For the majority of our users who are using Thunderbird, this works great as they receive the notice once to twice a day as a gentle reminder. Our few die-hard outlook users on the other hand get an annoying popup as often as their account gets polled. Does anyone know of a way to tell outlook to reuse IMAP connections to avoid this problem (or alternatively to disable Outlook reporting of alerts altogether)?

  • Parameter _rollback_segment_count can cause trouble

    Just some weeks ago we've learned that setting the hidden underscore parameter: _rollback_segment_count may cause trouble during upgrade. This parameter is used in very rare cases to have under all circumstances and situations this specified number of UNDO's online. Now during upgrade this may result in massive latch contention due to bug14226559 - and there's a patch available as well. Recommendation is to unset it during upgrade. I don't think that many people will hit this as I personally haven't seen databases with this underscore in their init.ora or spfiles. So take this post more or less as a reminder for myself

  • JSF 2.2 recent progress - Early Draft

    JSF specification lead Ed Burns has an update on the progress of JSF 2.2, another component which should be required as part of the upcoming Java EE 7 standard. This includes a reminder of the scope of this specification, the availability of the early draft and height specific features that are being worked on and split into "Mostly Specified Features" and "Not Yet Fully Specified Features" (I think you can read the latter as "at risk"). My favorite is "763-EverythingIsInjectable". Remember that JSF 2.2 is due out in the middle of 2012 which is in time to be integrated in the Java EE 7 platform JSR (currently scheduled for second half of 2012). In the mean time, JSF 2.2 nightly builds are available.

    This one is mainly a personal reminder but I hope it helps somebody else too. Let's say you have a table that covers something like currency exchange rates with columns for the start and end dates of the period each rate was applicable. Now you need to list the rates that applied during the year 2009. For some reason this always fazes me and I have to work it out with a diagram. So here's the recipe so I never have to do that again: select  * from    ExchangeRate where   StartDate < '31-DEC-2009'         and EndDate > '01-JAN-2009'   That is all!

  • How to convincing Programmers that 'being in the zone' [coding] isn't always beneficial for the project?

One of the hardest statements the book makes here is to stay out of "the zone" when coding. Bob asserts that you lose parts of the big picture when you go down to that level. While I may struggle with that assertion, I do agree with his next statement that debugging time is expensive, so you should avoid having to do debugger-driven development whenever possible. He finishes the chapter with examples of pacing yourself (walking away, taking a shower) and how to deal with being late on your projects (remembering that hope is not a plan, and being clear about the impact of overtime) along with a reminder that it is good to both give and receive help, whether it be small questions or mentoring others. they talk about how 'being in the zone' - can actually be detrimental to the project. How do you convince your team members that this is the case?

    Reminder to myself - SQL Server has nice index columns directly tied to their tables. Oracle has sequences that are islands to themselves. select seq_name.currval from dual; select seq_name.nextval from dual; currval - return current number at top of sequence nextval - increment sequence by 1, return new number   therefore - to create functionality in oracle similar to an index column - OPTION A) - Create insert trigger: CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER dept_bir BEFORE INSERT ON departments FOR EACH ROW WHEN (new.id IS NULL) BEGIN SELECT dept_seq.NEXTVAL INTO :new.id FROM dual; END; This will handle creating a unique identity, but will not necessarily inform process flow of identity without additional logic. OPTION B) - Select indentity into temp variable, insert whole item into tab **** When attemptint to query currval, the below error was being thrown - SELECT seq_name.currval from dual; ERROR : TABLE OR VIEW DOES NOT EXIST *** Although Oracle sys tables may have access to the sequences, that isn't to say the Oracle user may have access to those sequences - verify permissions when the system can't see object that are being reported in the object explorer.
