  • Best way to set up servers for .NET performance [migrated]

    Assume we have 3 physical servers and let's say we are only interested in performance, and not reliability. Is it better to give each server a specific function or make them all duplicates and split the traffic between them? In other words dedicate 1 as DB server, 1 as web server, and 1 as reporting server/data warehouse, or better to put all three services on each server and use them as web farm?

    I saw some articles about how DNS propagation happens.I know that ISP or DNS server(such as google public dns) cache the ip address of website which it uses to convert domain name to ip address. But my doubt is from where these ISP or dns serevr know which nameserver to go for particular domain name. for example a domain.com has two name servers ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com. But how the ISP server or dns server know that it uses these name server and i have to send request to this name server.So where does this record mainatined?

    I've been using a little utility on my linux-based machines for years called conky.  It can be used to monitor system resources, but I wanted to modify it to monitor my WebLogic managed servers too. Once installing conky, you'll need to update the .conkyrc file.  Here is a simple example. Basically, the important lines are these: - Admin (7001) ${if_empty ${exec /usr/sbin/lsof -i :7001 | grep LISTEN}}${color red}DOWN${color} ${else}${color green} UP ${color}(${tcp_portmon 7001 7001 count}) ${endif} - OSB (8011) ${if_empty ${exec /usr/sbin/lsof -i :8011 | grep LISTEN}}${color red}DOWN${color} ${else}${color green} UP ${color}(${tcp_portmon 8011 8011 count}) ${endif} - BAM (9001) ${if_empty ${exec /usr/sbin/lsof -i :9001 | grep LISTEN}}${color red}DOWN${color} ${else}${color green} UP ${color}(${tcp_portmon 9001 9001 count}) ${endif} - DB (1521) ${if_empty ${exec /usr/sbin/lsof -i :1521 | grep LISTEN}}${color red}DOWN${color} ${else}${color green} UP ${color}(${tcp_portmon 1521 1521 count}) ${endif} It uses lsof to find out if ports are in use.     Let's say that I have site.com website that I bought at one place, but want to host on another place. I don't know what to do. Here is scenario. I bought site.com on company that is using their own nameservers - ns.a.com. And linked website to their own servers. I bought hosting on another company that is using nameservers - ns.b.com. Should I just change ns.a.com on my DOMAIN to ns.b.com? Or should I link all DNS entries on my domain control panel to host ip addresses?

  • Switch Hosts With Gmail Account Attached

    Hi, I am transferring a client from their old host to my new one. Their domain-based gmail/apps account was connected to their old host, so when I changed the domain's name servers to the new host, naturally the gmail account stopped working. So I added the 7 MX records tho the new host's DNS and verified I own the domain on the new host's FTP but the email still isn't working. Is there something I'm missing? I added the MX records to the new host about two hours ago, is it possible it just takes longer than that? Also, outgoing mail seems to work. Members of the domain can't receive email though, just sends back an error. Thanks, Wade

I wonder how I will continue to pay for the servers when I reach high traffic. I don't want to use any ads or sponsor things, because this is not the goal of the website (just like wikipedia once again). Does "please donate" works ?     My application generates text files that need to be synced with remote servers, which may be windows or linux. Sync has to happen without user's intervention. I tried with rsync but windows doesn't come with rsync by default. Also it is not possible to supply password in the command line for rsync. Currently I'm going with ftp. But that seems like an inefficient way. Is there a way to rsync without user intervention? What are the ways to sync with a remote server programmatically? App is on nodejs.

    I stumbled upon this news article on BBC, RSA splits passwords in two to foil hackers' attacks tl;dr - a (randomized) password is split in half and is stored across two separate servers, to foil hackers that gained access to either server upon a security breach. Now the main question is, how would this kind of system would be made... codespeaking, for PHP which I commonly develop on my web applications, the database password is normally stored in a configuration file, i.e. config.php with the username and password, in that case it is understandable that the passwords can be stolen if the security was compromised. However when splitting and sending the other half to the other server, how would this go on when making a communication to the other server (keeping in mind with PHP) since the other server password would be stored in a configuration file, wouldn't it? In terms of security is to keep the other server password away from the main one, just exactly how would the main server communicate, without exposing any other password, apart from the first server. This certainly makes me think...
