  Hi, I got a new VPS setup and I'm wondering why I can't send emails to yahoo and gmail. • How can I receive more traffic? My VPS fails!!!

  I have a web site - photo gallery. About 400 photos. Site on Gallery 3. mySQL. Hosted on VPS from myhosting.com (CPU 1792 MHz, 2048 MB RAM). Everything seems to be ok, but there is one big problem. Once traffic reaches ~ 20 people (online) - website start loading really really slow. Actually website can't be loaded about 30-60 sec. What should I do? Buy more RAM / CPU on the same VPS? Move to a dedicated server or maybe myhosting.com just sucks? What do you recommend?

For the current traffic, it's good enought but, my question is, wouldn't i be better off, if i would buy for example, a server and plug it to the ISP myself? For example a Mac mini or a MacPro ?   I'm trying to do Remote Administration of IIS in C#.NET using System.Web.Administration tools. Everything works fine on a test server (windows 2008), however when I try using our live server (windows 2003) it fails giving the message: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException : Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008) The server itself has plenty of memory free, so I believe this is some kind of memory limit with the RPC itself. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890425 Is there any way around this?

  I need to create as many VPS's on my dedicated server (KVM or OpenVZ) in order to sell them but I really don't know the answer. RAM calculation is simple, it's more about CPU resources, how many VPS's can hold. I'am talking about Intel i7-2600 (4 cores, 8 Threads). I need to deploy as many VPS's. It's all about the nr threads? i.e. 8 threads = maximum 8 x 1vCPU or maximum 4 x 2vCPU? I'am planning to use 1Gb and 2Gb memory on each VPS, the server has 16Gb (but I can raise RAM if need it. So, can I create 8 KVM VPS's with 4 vCPU and 2Gb ram each ? How about 20 VPS's with 1Gb ram and 4vCPU each? How is this decision affected by the hypervisor (KVM, OpenVZ, VMware)?

  I am attempting to install Glassfishv3 on my Ubuntu (8.04) VPS using Java 1.6. I initially tried starting the server using: asadmin start-domain and received the following error message: JVM failed to start: com.sun.enterprise.admin.launcher.GFLauncherException: The server exited prematurely with exit code 1. Before it died, it produced the following output: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Command start-domain failed. I attempted to run it again and received a different message: Waiting for DAS to start Error starting domain: domain1. The server exited prematurely with exit code 1. Before it died, it produced the following output: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. Command start-domain failed. If I run cat /proc/meminfo I get the following (all other values are 0kB): MemTotal: 1310720 kB MemFree: 1150668 kB LowTotal: 1310720 kB LowFree: 1150668 kB I have checked the contents of glassfish/glassfish/domains/domain1/config/domain.xml and the JVM setting is: -Xmx512m Any help on resolving this problem would be appreciated.

  Hi, I bought a VPS a few days back and had a domain name registered. It gave me 2 nameservers. I only have shell access (no Cpanel/WHM) and it's running CentOS 5. I can visit my site with http://IP/ but not with http://domain.com. What changes do I need to make so that I can visit my site with http://domain.com. • Webserver optimization

  Hi guys! I have a website hosted on a VPS (512Mb - minimum guranteed memory, 510Mhz proccessor, Debian 5.0 Lenny, Apache 2.2.9 with nginx 0.7.65 as a frontend to serve static content, MySQL 5.1.44, PHP 5.3.2 with APC caching). I'm a web developer, so I'm not very good at optimizing servers, but I've managed to install and setup all those neccessary components (LAMP, nginx, etc.). After that I decided to stress test my website (which uses Drupal 6.16 with caching and all possible optimization enabled) using a utility called "Webserver Stress Tool 7". And it seems to me that the results aren't any good - here is a graph (sorry, as a new user I'm not allowed to post images) As you can see the response time depending on amount of simultaneous users increases very quickly. With 10 simultaneous users the time is about 1000ms, with 100 simultaneous users it's about 15000ms (15s!). The question is do you think this is normal behavior for such a server or something is wrong with the settings and optimization? If you think something is wrong what particulary could be wrong? Any other suggestion how to speed this a little bit up?

However, it should be possible to plan a reboot before possible shut down. What is the best practical method to check the used memory, and reboot the system upon reaching e.g. 90% of the allowed RAM? Is there a common program or script to do so? I am using Debian/Ubuntu.

I added a user and put it sudoers file. when I write as a user apti <TAB> it comletes with tab to aptitude <TAB> but when I continue to aptitude upd <TAB> it didnt complete but on my desktop it works great. Even worse if I try same command with sudo sudo apti <TAB> does not work I checked .basrc and /etc/bash.basrc completion is commented out so what is wrong. By the way when I root it works

  At the beginning of this year I took a VPS for my website because I was running against the resource limits from a shared hosting. Here are the things I know: 2GB memory, with 1GB swap Debian X64 server ED installed Software running on the webserver: mysql apache postfix pop3 imap amavisd clamd cron fail2ban munin-node pure-ftpd spamd nginx Now for the setup: Nginx listens on port 80 and handles the static files, the php side is done by apache2 running mod_php in combi with apc(no var caching!). Iam using a pretty 'busy' drupal and phpbb stack on the server, for drupal iam using boost and authcache to handle of the server load with a pressflow stack. phpbb is just phpbb3 with some mods installed, but has at max 30 users online at a time.. The problem is that its staring to use the swap after a few days after a reboot and thus the site becomes slower. I'v added pictures of monit and munin, so maybe somebody can help me out... • Disable IPv6 on Debian VPS

  I have a Debian Lenny VPS, that's running virtualized by Parallels/Virtuozzo. Currently, the network interface doesn't have an IPv6 address - and that's good, because I don't have an ip6tables configuration. But I assume, that I could wake up one day, and ifconfig will show me an ipv6 address for the interface - because I have no control over the kernel or its modules - they're under the control of the hosting company. That would leave the server completely vulnerable to attacks from IPv6 addresses. What would be the best way to disable IPv6 (for the interface or maybe for the entire host)? Usually I would simply disable the kernel module, but that's not possible in this case.

• php-cgi got SIGKILL on burst.net VPS?

  I got an VPS at burst.net, very cheap one, but this doesn't matter. The strange behavior of it is, the php-cgi process, which started using lighthttpd's spawn-cgi, dies every a few minutes. however, other processes are fine and great, even include a java process, and I'm sure there is no "out of memory" issue, so it's not killed by OOM killer. I used strace to trace the process, and found out it was killed by SIGKILL, hence no single log was left on the disk, just dies suddenly. Is there anyway I can find out what process/thing sent the SIGKILL to the poor php process? Filed a ticket with the vendor, but they said they won't care. strace -p 7176 Process 7176 attached - interrupt to quit wait4(-1, <unfinished ...> +++ killed by SIGKILL +++

• VPS stops responding every now and again

  I have a Linode vps that I use to host some of my websites on. It's Ubuntu based and it's up to date in terms of all packages. I don't have any cron jobs scheduled or any automatic processes. I host a few (up to date) wordpress blogs there that have very little traffic altogether. Every day (at a different time) my server stops responding, I can't SSH to it, web access is getting timed out and it just dies until I reboot it through the Linode manager. On the linode dashboard I can see that the CPU is not very high (2-3%) Incoming/Outgoing traffic is on 0 and the IO count has a spike just before the server stops responding (SWAP IO is at 2k and IO Rate is at 5k). When I reboot the server everything is just fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to analyze what's going on at these random times where the server freezes up. How can I determine the problem?

Looking for something that offers standard Windows IIS hosting for a Dotnetnuke portal site with SQL Server Express or Web. Basic managed services for OS updates as well as regular backups required. Good level of support and solid uptime is critical. Budget in the $150-$200 month range but flexible depeding on quality and services offerred. Anyone have any suggestions and good feedback they can share?   Assuming I have no experience in running them, what would be called a good maintenance routine for a VPS server running mail server and LAMP with a couple of sites. I've got one for quite a while now, but was doing what I feel is right without any guidance. It's ubuntu server and the only thing I do is ssh in there once a month and apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. Last year it suggested to update the distro, which I did. Waded through a bunch of diffs, broke mail server in the process and fixed it later on. So it turned out fine. Was this a right thing to do or should I stick with the old version just updating the packages? Is there a difference in the routine if it will be Fedora?

• Setting up VPS hosting

  I'm trying to set up my own vps hosting. It wont be a paid service, just an experiment for me and some nerdy friends. What I'd like to be able to do is this: Run multiple virtual servers on 1 external IP. These servers can run anything from Minecraft servers to simple http servers. They will also need to be accessible thru SSH. What I don't get is how I can address these servers using domain names. I've done some research and found out that I could use Vhosts with Apache. However this only applies to http servers. It was also suggested I'd use a reverse proxy(squid) but this also only applies to http requests. I could just use different ports for different servers, but thats not ideal and not what I want. Can someone suggest a setup? Maybe some tutorials or anything.
