• Family server setup [closed]

  Hi all, I really hope some of you can give me some direction. I have setup a linux server at home and through samba I can access files from different computers in my home. I would like to use this server as a file-server for my family (brothers, sisters and parents who all live in their own homes). I really like the way it is set up right now with user and permission controls, but I've read that it is bad idea to open up the samba port to the world. The requirements are simple: 1) it should be easy to access, by using standard web browsers or mounting the drive (shouldn't have to use any VPN setup or use putty etc) 2) should be somewhat secure. We just want to share family pictures instead of putting them on facebook or picasa or other web server, nothing top secret. Here is what I've looked into: 1)Webdav. It seems decent but seems like it windows7 doesn't like it very much, even with digest mode authentication. User controls and permissions are not as flexible as samba (or at least to my knowledge). I really like the user and group permissions in samba, but if I could live with webdav if it worked seamlessly with windows, it should just work shouldn't it? 2) I read somewhere to stay away from ftp as it is outdated and that there are newer and better internet file-server setups? Was that a reference to webdav? I am so confused, please help... Manny

• Powershell scripts to backup SQL, SVN

  I'm trying to use PowerShell to create some backups, and then to copy these to a web folder (or, in other words, upload them to a WebDAV share). At first I thought I'd do the WebDAV stuff from within PowerShell, but it seems this still requires a fair amount of "manual labour", ie: constructing HTTP requests. I then settled for creating a web folder from the script and letting Windows handle the WebDAV stuff. It seems that all it takes to create a web folder is to create a standard shortcut, as described here. What I can't figure out is how to actually copy files to the shortcut's target..? Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. It would be ideal if I could somehow encrypt the credentials for the WebDAV in the script, then have it create the web folder, shunt over the files, and delete the web folder again. Or even better, not use a web folder at all. Third option would be to just create the web folder manually and leave it there, though I'd rather not. Any ideas/pointers/tips? :)

• svn post-commit not performing

  ive been sitting on this for about 7 hours, and ive aged close to 7 years... ahhh, server admin does that to me. i have svn wired through apache2 with webdav in the usual manner (basically like http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-subversion-with-webdav-post-commit-hook-and-multiple-sites-on-jaunty-jackalope-ubuntu-9.04). ive had endless problems with this (i didnt on my previous ubuntu server install, although this is ubuntu 10.10): this happened, and was fixed like in the post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2547400/how-do-you-fix-an-svn-409-conflict-error this looks like my issue, although its not my solution: http://serverfault.com/questions/135494/apache-svn-on-ubuntu-post-commit-hook-fails-silently-pre-commit-hook-permis my commit to svn works (finally). although the post-commit hook which is supposed to svn update the working copy of the repo on the server, doesn't work. the post-commit hook itself executes, and has sudo permissions (as in the setup url above. testing with whoami somelogfile.log or sudo whoami somelogfile.log shows www-data and root, respectively), although it wont perform the svn update (sudo svn update /var/www/gameServer /var/svn/gameServer.log). similar to the serverfault url above, when i perform the exact command it does update the working copy to the latest revision, just not through the post-commit hook. an age old question that is 90% of the time a permissions issue. but in pure frustration i chmod 777 lots of stuff not to mention the fact that www-data is in /etc/sudoer so it shouldnt even need that. im collapsing in front of the screen partly out of frustration and partly out of sleepiness. any direction would be appreciated.

What are my options besides SMB (SAMBA)? Does OpenAFS support user level authentication & access? Using mounted WebDAV/ftp/sshfs seems silly for LAN.

  Hi, I need to send a file to MobileMe via Cocoa. I stumbled across a .Mac framework from Apple but it hasn't been updated in years, so I don't want to use it due to possible compatibility problems it may cause. I think that the MobileMe.framework is private, so I don't think I can use it. What kind of alternatives are there available for me so that I can upload the file to MobileMe?   Hi all, I've set up a Ubuntu Server for Subversion with Apache/WebDAV interface to share repositories with other developers. My question is, how can I make Subversion use the linux system accounts for authentication? This would lead to very easy Subversion account management. Subversion with Apache/WebDAV is currently working with this configuration: Contents of /etc/apache2/mods-available/dav_svn.conf: <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath /home/svn SVNListParentPath On AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Repository" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd Require valid-user </Location> I have tried changing AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd with AuthUserFile /etc/shadow with no success.   Hi, I'm trying to set-up a subversion server with apache2/webdav access. I've created the repository and configure Apache according to the official book, and I can see the repository in a webbrowser. The browser shows: conf/ db/ hooks/ locks/ Although clicking any of those links gives an empty xml document like: <D:error> <C:error/> <m:human-readable errcode="2"> Could not open the requested SVN filesystem </m:human-readable> </D:error> I've never used subversion before so I assume this is correct? Anyway, when I try to connect via a command line client, it asks for my password, I give it, then I get the (useless) error message: svn: OPTIONS of 'https://svn.mysite.com': Could not read status line: Secure connection truncated (https://svn.mysite.com) The command I'm using is: svn checkout https://svn.mysite.com/ svn.mysite.com Subversion was installed using Ubuntu's package manager. It's version 1.6.6 on Ubuntu 10.04. • Show a DB as a directory (Like Sharepoint Does)

  Hi, My team and I are programming a sort of Document Manager and the idea is to store them completely on DB. Is there a protocol or Extensions that allows us to show a "Virtual Directory" or files that are really non existent (only in DB). How does Sharepoint do this? I understand that Sharepoint uses WebDav but it implies that the files do exist physically somewhere. We intend to develop this application on .NET 4.0 and deploy it on IIS. Any suggestions? • Web Client Service constantly in 'Stopping' state

  I have a user who's Web Client service constantly reports that it's in the 'Stopping' state and it's hindering her ability to save JMP files to a SharePoint site using the UNC path. She's running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I've tried modifying the Web Client parameters in the registry for UseBasicAuth and FileAttributesLimitInBytes with no luck. When I set the service to Manual and then try to start it after Windows boots up, it starts and then immediately goes into the Stopping state again. Other things I've tried: Removing/Reinstalling her network card Removing/Reinstalling the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing Checked that the BITS and RPC services are running fine (not sure if they're related) Does anyone have any other ideas? Is there a way to repair/rebuild the Web Client service?

• Multiple SVN repos on Debian HTTPd vhost setup

  I would like to have my svn/http server setup so I can access multiple repositories via a "svn" subdomain: https://svn.example.com/repo1 https://svn.example.com/repo2 I am using Debian 6, and already have multiple vhosts set up via the standard sites-available method. Resources and their problems: How To: subversion SVN with Apache2 and DAV This one doesn't deal with a server with multiple vhosts. Installing and Configuring Subversion This one only considers one subversion repository. This one does show putting the SVN DAV <Location> in the svn vhost file. However, it doesn't say whether to put it inside or outside the <VirtualHost> tag. Does this really limit the subversion access to just that vhost? I just tried, and can access /foorepo from any subdomain. Setting Up Subversion And Trac As Virtual Hosts On An Ubuntu Server This one appears to be very close, but I can still access repos from any vhost. In other words, it doesn't matter what subdomain I specify, as long as the path matches the repo name. Doesn't make any sense. And yes, my <Location> tag is inside the <VirtualHost>. A lot of these articles seem to have been written in 2006 or earlier, and don't necessarily conform to the configuration methods that newer distros are using. Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

• nginx inserting extra characters in Multi-status reply body

  Here's the setup. I've got one server running apache/php hosting ownCloud. Among other things, I'm using to do CardDAV contact syncing. In order to make things work with my domain I have an nginx server running on the frontend as a reverse-proxy to the ownCloud server. My nginx config is as follows: server { listen 80; server_name cloud.mydomain.com; location / { proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host cloud.mydomain.com; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto http; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $remote_addr; client_max_body_size 0; proxy_redirect off; proxy_pass http://server; } } The problem is that when my phone does a PROPFIND on the server, nginx adds extra characters to the content body that throw the phone off. Specifically, it prepends d611\r\n at the front of the body and appends 0\r\n\r\n to the end of the content. (I got this from wireshark.) It also re-chunks the result. How do I get nginx to send the original content as-is?

• Save Usercredentials permanently without prompt when opening Document from Webdavserver

  i am opening a word document from a url like https://myurl.com/mydoc.doc. The Webdavserver uses Basic Authentication. At the beginning the Office 2003 is asking for the Username and Password. After i have typed them in I click the checkbox "Save Usercredentials" and the word is opened. When i open the document the next time the login prompt is appearing again (username and passwort are already set in the textfields and I only have to click "Ok"). Is it possible to avoid this one click and make office not show this prompt at all after the first login? Greetings Klaus
