• Will there be an option in the GUI to change the week-starting day in 11.04?

  This has been problematic for me in Ubuntu since I live in the UK but want the week to start on a Sunday (because that is the system my work use). I've faffed about in the last couple of versions of Ubuntu to no avail (it changes in Evolution but not on the desktop calendar etc.) and don't want to be editing locale files. I understand it's probably an issue with GNOME so are there any plans to implement it with Unity? I find it baffling that an operating system doesn't have such a simple option that even my phones always seem to have had.

• Stuck in logon loop

  Here's the deal. I set up a computer with Ubuntu 10.04 for my grandmother. Everything worked fine. I connected it to the internet at her house today. After rebooting the computer I found that the computer would kick you back to the logon screen if you attempted to logon to her account. It worked fine logging on to my admin account, and also in Gnome's safe mode. I thought it had resolved itself, but turns out it hadn't, and now I don't have physical access to the computer, plus the remote connection I'd hoped to use only works intermittently. I need some suggestions for troubleshooting for when I'm at her house at some point next week. Ask for any more details, but I'm afraid I won't be able to provide many more until I've checked it out in person, since she is basically unable to use a computer beyond web browsing. • Android daemon process

  Is it possible (without violating any licenses) to write a native C/C++ application on top of the Android OS and make it run as a daemon process? There are already several daemon process' running which one can see with the 'ps' command, the legal part concerns me the most. And also the lack of documentation on how to exactly do this. For the writing part, I guess one could use basic Linux programming concepts, since Android supports at least to some level the standard Posix API. To make it run as the phone boots, some modifications is of course required in init as well. I have no plans to have this app in the Android Market, so installing it manually to the phone is not a problem. As long as it does not require re-compiling the whole OS or kernel. I really appreciate all info on this topic, since there's isn't much available. Thanks.

  I am using Daemon tool to mount an ISO image on Windows XP machine.I do mount using Daemon command (daemon.exe -mount 0,). Above command will mount ISO image to device number. In my case I have 4 partition (C,D,E,F) and G for DVD/CD-RW. Now what happen, ISO gets mounted to drive letter 'H:' with name (as defined while creating ISO) say 'testmount' My queries:- 1) How can I get mount name of mounted ISO image (i.e. 'testmount'). Just another case; if there are already some mount points existing on machine and I created a new one using Daemon tool. Then If I can get latest one using script that will be great. 2) How to get drive letter where it did get mounted. If anyone know python script or command (or even Win command ) to get these info. do let me know. Thanks...

The script is being daemonized using start-stop-daemon in a startup script, which may complicate the answer What I really (think) don't want is to type ps -few and see this process running with a "root" on it's line. How do I do it? ( from my less-than-fully-educated-about-system-calls perspective, I can see 3 avenues, Run the script as root (no --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon), and have it de-escalate it's user after it claims the port Setuid root on the script (chmod u+s), and run the script as the running user, (via --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon, the startup script still has to be called as root), in the script, acquire root privileges, claim the port, and then revert back to normal user something else i'm unaware of )

• Problems with PHP System_Daemon and IMAP connection.

  I'm trying to create a PHP daemon that connects to an IMAP server and processes emails as they come in. I have it close to working, but the daemon keeps grabbing the original emails that it finds the first time the daemon is loaded. I believe the reason is because I'm opening the IMAP connection in the parent process.   I want to start my daemon with my application. In the command line, I can write something like lib/daemons/mydaemon_ctl start to start up my daemon, but I have to do this manually. I want the daemon to start when I start my server (i.e. when the initializer files are loaded). Is there a ruby command for executing a command line? Something like exec "lib/daemons/mydaemon_ctl start"? Thanks!

  Hey Everyone, I've set up a daemon (daemon.php) using PEAR's System_Daemon which waits for something to appear in the database. Once something is there, the daemon gets enough information and sends it out to another script (execute.php) using the shell_exec command this way I'm not worried about waiting for a response and holding up the daemon. Both of the scripts work fine alone and I'm even able to call shell_exec before calling System_Daemon::start(); . However, if I trying calling it AFTER System_Daemon::start();, then I get an Access Denied only when outputting to a file. I'm still new to Daemons in general, so any ideas or thoughts would be great! Thanks Guys!

I also don't want to catch KeyboardInterruptedException, because the persistent data could be in an inconsistent state. My current solution is to define a signal handler that catches SIGINT and sets a flag; each iteration of the main loop checks this flag before processing the next url. However, I've found that if the system happens to be executing socket.recv() when I send the interrupt, I get this: ^C Interrupted; stopping... // indicates my interrupt handler ran Traceback (most recent call last): File "crawler_test.py", line 154, in <module> main() ... File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/socket.py", line 397, in readline data = recv(1) socket.error: [Errno 4] Interrupted system call and the process exits completely. • Can certain system-hungry modules be disabled in Ubuntu?

  Hi, Let me add some context: I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit (Desktop) on a relatively powerful stationary PC (Intel Core i7 920, 12GB ram). My purpose is highspeed imaging with a pointgrey Grashopper machine-vision camera (for research, PhD project). This camera is capable of 200 fps at full VGA (640x480) resolution. The camera is connected using Firewire (1394b) and the drivers and software from Pointgrey works great. I have developed a console C++ application that can grap a certain number of frames to preallocated memory and after this also save the grapped frames to harddrive. Currently it works fine but sometimes I am observing a few framedrops (1-3). When this happens I reset the experiment and repeat the recording and usually i am lucky the second time with no framedrops (the camera-driver has a internal framecounter that I am using). Question: I usually go to tty1 and use "sudo service gdm stop" to disable the graphical frontend. It seems to release some memory though that is not my main concern. My concern is CPU resources. Are there other system hungry modules that can be disabled temporarily such that the CPU gets less busy on Ubuntu 9.10? At some point in the future I will update to 10.10. Should I perhaps option for the server edition instead? Thanks.

  I've seen this question and this article on how to debug a native Java crash. The article is with respect to Windows. What are the equivalent debugging aids on Linux? Note: All I have is this crash log from a user in the field. I do not have access to the machine on which the crash occurred. Update: I am pretty sure the crash is due to JNI code we have. I never meant to imply that it was the JVM itself that was faulty. • Roadblocks in creating a custom operating system

  It seems to me that the most common overly ambitious project that programmers (esp. Comp. Sci. grads) try to tackle is building your own operating system. (Trying to create your own programming language + compiler is probably even more common but not nearly as ambitious.) For those (like myself) foolish enough to try: aside from the sheer size, what are the biggest *gotcha*s or unexpected roadblocks you've encountered in trying to create your own OS from the ground up? Please remove references to assemblies not in the targeted framework or consider retargeting your project. I tried adding a reference to System.Design, but it doesn't exist in my list. Do I need to download it somewhere? I have MS Visual Studio 10.

• Doubts in System call mechanism in linux

  We transit from ring3 to ring0 using 'int' or the new 'syscall/sysenter' instruction. Does that mean that the page tables and other stuffs that needs to be modified for the kernel is automatically done by the 'int' instruction or the interrupt handler for the 'int 0x80' will do the required stuff and jump to the respective system call. Also when returning from a system call, we again need to go to user space. For this we need to know the instruction address in the user space to continue the user application. Where is that address stored. Does the 'ret' instruction automatically changes the ring from ring3 to ring0 or where/how this ring changing mechanism takes place? Then, i read that changing from ring3 to ring0 is not as costly as changing from ring0 to ring3. Why is this so?? Thanks, Bala
