  Hello, Not long ago I started an internship at a company that supplies SharePoint consultancy, hosting and development. While their consultancy seems to be pretty good and solid, I feel their development department lacks direction. The reason for this, most likely, is that they stopped outsourcing not too long ago. One thing that I've frequently bumped my head into is the following: My supervisor strongly insists that everything that can be done natively in SharePoint (somehow this includes editing xslt files in Designer) should be done in SharePoint. Even if this results in longer development time (at least when they make me write XSLT) and reduced usability. Her main arguments for this are: Better maintainability Editing the functionality doesn't require programming knowledge I feel the company is a little biassed and I am unable to get a decent discussion going. This is why I am looking for other places to get some responses on the subject (and not only on the arguments of my supervisor, but more on the subject in general). Kind regards

• Is there any reason to allow Yahoo! Slurp to crawl my site?

  I thought a year or more ago Yahoo! would be using another search engine for results, and no longer using their own Slurp bot. However, a couple of the sites I manage Yahoo! Slurp continues to crawl pages, and seems to ignore the Gone status code when returned (as it keeps coming back). Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to block Yahoo! Slurp via robots.txt or by IP (since it tends to ignore robots.txt in some cases anyways)? I've confirmed that when the bot does hit it is from Yahoo! IPs, so I believe this is a legit instance of the bot. Is Yahoo Search the same as Bing Search now? is a related question, but I don't think it completely answers whether one should add a new block of the bot.

  I need to prevent users from authenticating through Kerberos when the encrypted /home/users has not yet been mounted. (This is to avoid corrupting the ecryptfs mountpoint) Currently I have these lines in /etc/pam.d/common-auth: auth required pam_group.so use_first_pass auth [success=2 default=ignore] pam_krb5.so minimum_uid=1000 try_first_pass auth [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix.so nullok_secure try_first_pass I am planning to use pam_exec.so to execute a script that will exit 1 if the ecyptfs mounts are not ready yet. Doing this: auth required pam_exec.so /etc/security/check_ecryptfs will lock me out for good if ecryptfs for some reason fails. In such case I would like to at least be able to login with a local (non-kerberos) user to fix the issue. Is there some sort of AND-Operator in which I can say that login through kerberos+ldap is only sufficient if both kerberos authentication and the ecryptfs mount has succeeded?

• When creating a new text file, should I add a .txt extension to its name?

  When I create a new document aimed at containing only plain text, I am not obliged by Ubuntu to add a .txt extension to its name. It works indeed very well: gedit opens it without problem, understanding very well that it is only text. The only two pro arguments I have found from now on for adding an extension are 1/ interoperability with Windows systems and 2/ avoiding confusion with folders having the same name. Nevertheless those two arguments do not convince me at all. As a consequence, should I keep the reflex of adding an extension to files or not?

  I'm trying to check FAT16 file system with GParted and the check fails with the following message: The file system's CHS geometry is (484, 16383, 63) is invalid. The partition table's CHS geometry is (31130, 255, 63). If you select Ignore, the file system's CHS geometry will be left unchanged. If you select Fix, the file system's geometry will be set to match the partition table's CHS geometry. The check just fails without any Ignore/Fix prompting. How do I fix this?

• How do I pitch ASP.NET over PHP to a potential client?

  I work at a Microsoft shop doing mainly web development. We had a client who asked us to review (improve) the data model for his web app, but said that he wants to develop his app in PHP (he knows "a guy" who can do it). When I asked him why he wants to go with PHP, he gave me the standard set of arguments from the 90's: Microsoft is evil, and PHP is free Writing an ASP.NET app is more expensive (software-wise) Why would Facebook use PHP if it was a bad idea? [classic] He had a few more comments about the costs associated with going .NET. The truth is that "Microsoft is expensive" does not hold water any longer, with their "Express" suite, you can develop an ASP.NET app without paying anything for software. When it comes to hosting, you can save a few bucks with PHP over .NET, but that's a small fraction of the projected development costs (we quoted 10-15k). Going back to my question, what arguments would I give to a client in favor of ASP.NET over PHP? [please provide sources for quantitative claims]

However, I have hit a few snags and I was wondering if I could get some clarification. The program I am working on is called "sat" and will be available via command line only. I have the main.cpp. However, my real question is more of a "best practices" for programming/organization. When my program "sat" is invoked I want it to take additional arguments. • How to disable low disk space notification? (Gnome 3, Ubuntu 12.04)

  I've got an SSD drive for root and /home, and a larger HDD for storage. The storage disk is almost full, and there's a low disk space warning on startup. The warning doesn't have any "don't show again" option, only "ignore" and "examine". It also doesn't go away but sticks on the screen until the ignore button is clicked, so it's very annoying in addition to being competely unnecessary. I tried unselecting the storage HDD in baobab's settings, but that didn't have any effect. I also tried gconf-editor, and looked for apps - gnome_settings_daemon - plugins - housekeeping, but there is no "plugins" under "gnome_settings_daemon". Only "gtk-modules" and "keybindings". • Check if the vector is behind another or maybe opposite directions?

  I'm doing a network game and on the client side, i interpolate the client position with the server sent extrapolated position. The client has its own physics simulation wich is corrected by the server in steps. The problem is when it laggs and i 'kick' the ball, the server gets a delayed message and sends me the position backwards of the client position wich makes the ball goes back and forth. I want to ignore those and maybe compensate that on the server, not sure though. The problem is the clock difference on those case are 0.07ms or 0.10 ms wich isn't that high to ignore the message i guess. When i get the server position, i extrapolate with the clock interval * serverBallVelocity Can i check if my new ball server position is behind my actual ball vector position? I tried to use the dot product after normalized the two vectors to check if they are opposite but it ain't working properly. Any suggestions on checking that?

• Advantages to Multiple Methods over Switch

  I received a code review from a senior developer today asking "By the way, what is your objection to dispatching functions by way of a switch statement?" I have read in many places about how pumping an argument through switch to call methods is bad OOP, not as extensible, etc. However, I can't really come up with a definitive answer for him. I would like to settle this for myself once and for all. Arguments I can come up with in support of Oop scheme: A bit cleaner in terms of the code you have to write (less, easier to read, less keywords to consider) Not all actions delegated to a single method. Not much difference in execution here, but at least the text is more compartmentalized. In the same vein, another method can be added anywhere in the class instead of a specific spot. Methods are namespaced, which is nice. Does not apply here, but consider a case where Switch::go() operated on a member rather than a parameter. You would have to change the member first, then call the method. For Oop you can call the methods independently at any time. Arguments I can come up with in support of Switch scheme: For the sake of argument, cleaner method of dealing with a default (unknown) request Seems less magical, which might make unfamiliar developers feel more comfortable Anyone have anything to add for either side? I'd like to have a good answer for him.

• My boss decided to add a "person to blame" field to every bug report. How can I convince him that it's a bad idea?

  In one of the latest "WTF" moves, my boss decided that adding a "Person To Blame" field to our bug tracking template will increase accountability (although we already have a way of tying bugs to features/stories). My arguments that this will decrease morale, increase finger-pointing and would not account for missing/misunderstood features reported as bug have gone unheard. What are some other strong arguments against this practice that I can use? Is there any writing on this topic that I can share with the team and the boss? I find this sort of culture unacceptable to work in but want to try and change it before jumping ship. Any input is appreciated.

  I am trying to set up Quagga ospfd on two hosts connected by an OpenVPN link.   Ok, now I have real server fault ;) After some time from booting (about one minute) my server hangs. All I can do is hard reset. I tried disabling ACPI but it didn't help (but I noticed there was longer time before hanging). I can't change clock to hpet, because my system doesn't have such one. • Wildcards in jnlp template file

  Since the last security changes in Java 7u40, it is required to sign a JNLP file. This can either be done by adding the final JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION.JNLP, or by providing a template JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION_TEMPLATE.JNLP in the signed main jar. The first way works well, but we would like to allow to pass a previously unknown number of runtime arguments to our application. Therefore, our APPLICATION_TEMPLATE.JNLP looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <jnlp codebase="*"> <information> <title>...</title> <vendor>...</vendor> <description>...</description> <offline-allowed /> </information> <security> <all-permissions/> </security> <resources> <java version="1.7+" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se" /> <jar href="launcher/launcher.jar" main="true"/> <property name="jnlp...." value="*" /> <property name="jnlp..." value="*" /> </resources> <application-desc main-class="..."> * </application-desc> </jnlp> The problem is the * inside of the application-desc tag. It is possible to wildcard a fixed number of arguments using multiple argument tags (see code below), but then it is not possible to provide more or less arguments to the application (Java Webstart will no start with an empty argument tag). <application-desc main-class="..."> <argument>*</argument> <argument>*</argument> <argument>*</argument> </application-desc> Does someone can confirm this problem and/or has a solution for passing a previously undefined number of runtime arguments to the Java application?
