  • How can I check that I didn't break anything when refactoring?

    - by Nathan Fellman
I'm about to embark on a bout of refactoring of some functions in my code. I have a nice amount of unit tests that will ensure I didn't break anything, but I'm not sure about the coverage they give me. Are there any tools that can analyze the code and see that the functionality remains the same? I plan to refactor some rather isolated code, so I don't need to check the entire program, just the areas that I'm working on. For context, the code I'm working on is in C/C++, and I work in Linux with GCC and VIM.

  • How to catch exception on RollBack

    - by Jagd
What is the best way to implement error handling for a SqlTransaction RollBack that already exists within a catch clause? My code is roughly like this: using (SqlConnection objSqlConn = new SqlConnection(connStr)) { objSqlConn.Open(); using (SqlTransaction objSqlTrans = objSqlConn.BeginTransaction()) { try { // code // more code // and more code } catch (Exception ex) { // What happens if RollBack() has an exception? objSqlTrans.Rollback(); throw ex; } } } I believe that my application had an exception in the try block, which in turn was caught in the catch block and then the RollBack was attempted. However, the error that I'm seeing says something about a SqlTransaction.ZombieCheck(), which is making me wonder if the RollBack() itself threw an exception as well. So, do I need to implement some type of error handling at the RollBack()? How do I do that and manage to hold on to the exception that put the execution into the catch block in the first place?

  • Any open source hosting site for abandoned projects?

    - by ssg
I have some projects which I have ceased their development a long time ago but still get code access requests for. I'm currently providing zipped packages from my personal web site. I think zipped packages are far from being useful (e.g. can't read code right away, can't provide url's to individual source files, can't fork easily, lifetime is dependent on my own web page's). I want that archaic code to be present on the net regardless I keep my web page up or not. I saw the question "What's the best open source hosting site?". However, most sites request the project "to be active", Codeplex for instance. I didn't go through EULA's of all providers to see if they allow abandoned projects. Are there elephant's graveyards for old code without activity restrictions? Which one would you pick, why?

  • Is automated source translation seen as beneficial and/or necessary?

    - by busybutwantmore
I have recently spent several years translating legacy FORTRAN into Java. Prior to that, I found myself translating FORTRAN into C (for which I wrote a simple translation tool). After all this work, I find myself wondering how many others are doing similar language-to-language translations and whether an automated way of doing so would be beneficial. I know about F2C, For_C, F2J and others, as well as some of the translation sites, but none seem to be all that successful. Having seen output from For_C, I can see why it just hasn't taken off. While it is technically correct, it is very difficult to maintain. So, I guess what I am wondering is if there were are tool that produced more maintainable, more grok-able code than the code I have seen, would developers use it? Or are developers as jaded as many posts seem to indicate and unwilling to use generated code as it could never be as good as their manually translated code?

  • Winforms controls and "generic" events handlers. How can I do this?

    - by Yanko Hernández Alvarez
In the demo of the ObjectListView control there is this code (in the "Complex Example" tab page) to allow for a custom editor (a ComboBox) (Adapted to my case and edited for clarity): EventHandler CurrentEH; private void ObjectListView_CellEditStarting(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) { ISomeInterface M = (e.RowObject as ObjectListView1Row).SomeObject; //(1) ComboBox cb = new ComboBox(); cb.Bounds = e.CellBounds; cb.DropDownStyle = ComboBoxStyle.DropDownList; cb.DataSource = ISomeOtherObjectCollection; cb.DisplayMember = "propertyName"; cb.DataBindings.Add("SelectedItem", M, "ISomeOtherObject", false, DataSourceUpdateMode.Never); e.Control = cb; cb.SelectedIndexChanged += CurrentEH = (object sender2, EventArgs e2) => M.ISomeOtherObject = (ISomeOtherObject)((ComboBox)sender2).SelectedValue; //(2) } } private void ObjectListView_CellEditFinishing(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) { // Stop listening for change events ((ComboBox)e.Control).SelectedIndexChanged -= CurrentEH; // Any updating will have been down in the SelectedIndexChanged // event handler. // Here we simply make the list redraw the involved ListViewItem ((ObjectListView)sender).RefreshItem(e.ListViewItem); // We have updated the model object, so we cancel the auto update e.Cancel = true; } } I have too many other columns with combo editors inside objectlistviews to use a copy& paste strategy (besides, copy&paste is a serious source of bugs), so I tried to parameterize the code to keep the code duplication to a minimum. ObjectListView_CellEditFinishing is a piece of cake: HashSet<OLVColumn> cbColumns = new HashSet<OLVColumn> (new OLVColumn[] { SomeCol, SomeCol2, ...}; private void ObjectListView_CellEditFinishing(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (cbColumns.Contains(e.Column)) ... but ObjectListView_CellEditStarting is the problematic. I guess in CellEditStarting I will have to discriminate each case separately: private void ObjectListView_CellEditStarting(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) // code to create the combo, put the correct list as the datasource, etc. else if (e.Column == SomeOtherCol) // code to create the combo, put the correct list as the datasource, etc. And so on. But how can I parameterize the "code to create the combo, put the correct list as the datasource, etc."? Problem lines are (1) Get SomeObject. the property NAME varies. (2) Set ISomeOtherObject, the property name varies too. The types vary too, but I can cover those cases with a generic method combined with a not so "typesafe" API (for instance, the cb.DataBindings.Add and cb.DataSource both use an object) Reflection? more lambdas? Any ideas? Any other way to do the same? PS: I want to be able to do something like this: private void ObjectListView_CellEditStarting(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) SetUpCombo<ISomeInterface>(ISomeOtherObjectCollection, "propertyName", SomeObject, ISomeOtherObject); else if (e.Column == SomeOtherCol) SetUpCombo<ISomeInterface2>(ISomeOtherObject2Collection, "propertyName2", SomeObject2 ISomeOtherObject2); and so on. Or something like that. I know, parameters SomeObject and ISomeOtherObject are not real parameters per see, but you get the idea of what I want. I want not to repeat the same code skeleton again and again and again. One solution would be "preprocessor generics" like C's DEFINE, but I don't thing c# has something like that. So, does anyone have some alternate ideas to solve this?

I am helping someone with some software they are selling. I am contributing code for free. The code that I wrote uses open source licenses and i have included them with the source code. Which software license can i put my code under? I would like to totally give the software to them for free. Please ask questions if there are issues O_o. Update: The library which is included is under Apache License, Version 2.0. Sorry for not including before.

  • .NET framework deprecated interfaces and attributes. What was your biggest refactoring due to lack o

    - by Andrew Florko
Some .net-framework interfaces and attributes become obsolete and deprecated since new framework version appears. I am warned that such code may be removed or become unpredictable in next versions but have you ever faced the situation when you were forced to refactor code because code came uncompilable or start to behave weird? What was you biggest refactoring? Or maybe Microsoft always continued to support api's once they were published? Thank you in advance!

  • Supporting Piping (A Useful Hello World)

    - by blastthisinferno
I am trying to write a collection of simple C++ programs that follow the basic Unix philosophy by: Make each program do one thing well. Expect the output of every program to become the input to another, as yet unknown, program. I'm having an issue trying to get the output of one to be the input of the other, and getting the output of one be the input of a separate instance of itself. Very briefly, I have a program add which takes arguments and spits out the summation. I want to be able to pipe the output to another add instance. ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 That should yield 6 but currently yields 10. I've encountered two problems: The cin waits for user input from the console. I don't want this, and haven't been able to find a simple example showing a the use of standard input stream without querying the user in the console. If someone knows of an example please let me know. I can't figure out how to use standard input while supporting piping. Currently, it appears it does not work. If I issue the command ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 it results in 7. The relevant code is below: add.cpp snippet // ... COMMAND LINE PROCESSING ... std::vector<double> numbers = multi.getValue(); // using TCLAP for command line parsing if (numbers.size() > 0) { double sum = numbers[0]; double arg; for (int i=1; i < numbers.size(); i++) { arg = numbers[i]; sum += arg; } std::cout << sum << std::endl; } else { double input; // right now this is test code while I try and get standard input streaming working as expected while (std::cin) { std::cin >> input; std::cout << input << std::endl; } } // ... MORE IRRELEVANT CODE ... So, I guess my question(s) is does anyone see what is incorrect with this code in order to support piping standard input? Are there some well known (or hidden) resources that explain clearly how to implement an example application supporting the basic Unix philosophy? @Chris Lutz I've changed the code to what's below. The problem where cin still waits for user input on the console, and doesn't just take from the standard input passed from the pipe. Am I missing something trivial for handling this? I haven't tried Greg Hewgill's answer yet, but don't see how that would help since the issue is still with cin. // ... COMMAND LINE PROCESSING ... std::vector<double> numbers = multi.getValue(); // using TCLAP for command line parsing double sum = numbers[0]; double arg; for (int i=1; i < numbers.size(); i++) { arg = numbers[i]; sum += arg; } // right now this is test code while I try and get standard input streaming working as expected while (std::cin) { std::cin >> arg; std::cout << arg << std::endl; } std::cout << sum << std::endl; // ... MORE IRRELEVANT CODE ...

  • Converting an empty string into nil in Ruby

    - by adi92
I have a string called word and a function called infinitive such that word.infinitive would return another string on some occasions and an empty string otherwise I am trying to find an elegant ruby one line expression for the code-snippet below if word.infinitive == "" return word else return word.infinitive Had infinitive returned nil instead of "", I could have done something like (word.infinitive or word) But since it does not, I can't take advantage of the short-circuit OR Ideally I would want 1) a single expression that I could easily embed in other code 2) the function infinitive being called only once 3) to not add any custom gems or plugins into my code

  • Proper status codes for JSON responses to Ajax calls?

    - by anonymous coward
My project is returning JSON to Ajax calls from the browser. I'm wondering what the proper status code is for sending back with responses to invalid (but successfully handled) data submissions. For example, jQuery has the following two particular callbacks when making Ajax requests: success: Fired when a 200/2xx status code is delivered along with the response. error: Fired when 4xx, 5xx, etc, status codes come back with the response. If a user attempts to create a new "Person" object, I send back a JSON representation of the newly created object upon success, thus giving javascript access to the necessary unique ID's for the new object, etc. This, of course, is sent with a 200 status code. If a user submits malformed or invalid data (say, an invalid/incomplete "name" field), I would like to send back the validation error messages via JSON. (I don't see why this would be a bad thing). My question is: in doing so, should I send a 200 status code, because I successfully handled their invalid data? Therefore, I'd be using the jQuery success callback, but simply check for errors... Or, should I use a 4xx status code, perhaps 'Bad Request', because the data they sent me is invalid? (and thus, use the error callback to do the necessary client-side notifications).

    Hi, There is a table Item like, code,name 01,parent1 02,parent2 0101,child11 0102,child12 0201,child21 0202,child22 Create a java object and hbm xml to map the table.The Item.parent is a Item whose code is equal to the first two character of its code : class Item{ string code; string name; Item parent; List<Item> children; .... setter/getter.... } <hibernate-mapping> <class name="Item" table="Item"> <id name="code" length="4" type="string"> <generator class="assigned" /> </id> <property name="name" column="name" length="50" not-null="true" /> <!--====================================== --> <many-to-one name="parent" class="Item" not-found="ignore"></many-to-one> <bag name="children"></bag> <!--====================================== --> </class> </hibernate-mapping> How to definition the mapping relationship? Thanks!

  • I cannot fetch appointments immediately via EWS on exchange server

    - by DappleHou
I developed a transport agent for exchange server. In this agent, I code to invoke EWS to get appointments. I cannot get appointments immediately by the code. wait for a while, then go to get appointments again. This time, its OK. Why not immediately? Here is my code. To solve it, I have to get appointments repeatedly till find appointments. do{ webServiceData.FindItemsResults<webServiceData.Appointment> results = folder.FindAppointments(view); Thread.sleep(100); }while(results.Items.Count==0); Note that the code is inside transport agent. Is there any other solutions?

  • Getting the first of a GROUP BY clause in SQL

    - by Michael Bleigh
I'm trying to implement single-column regionalization for a Rails application and I'm running into some major headaches with a complex SQL need. For this system, a region can be represented by a country code (e.g. us) a continent code that is uppercase (e.g. NA) or it can be NULL indicating the "default" information. I need to group these items by some relevant information such as a foreign key (we'll call it external_id). Given a country and its continent, I need to be able to select only the most specific region available. So if records exist with the country code, I select them. If, not I want a records with the continent code. If not that, I want records with a NULL code so I can receive the default values. So far I've figured that I may be able to use a generated CASE statement to get an arbitrary sort order. Something like this: SELECT *, CASE region WHEN 'us' THEN 1 WHEN 'NA' THEN 2 ELSE 3 END AS region_sort FROM my_table WHERE region IN ('us','NA') OR region IS NULL GROUP BY external_id ORDER BY region_sort The problem is that without an aggregate function the actual data returned by the GROUP BY for a given row seems to be untameable. How can I massage this query to make it return only the first record of the region_sort ordered groups?

  • The difference between triangulation and mesh

    - by xiao
I have done some computer graphical programming recently, and I have no experience before. I used the library call CGAL(computer geometry algorithm library). Also, I noticed that there is class for triangulation and also class for mesh. Is mesh just a kind of triangle net? Do they have any differences? Thanks!

  • Why is my number being rounded incorrectly?

    - by izb
This feels like the kind of code that only fails in-situ, but I will attempt to adapt it into a code snippet that represents what I'm seeing. float f = myFloat * myConstInt; /* Where myFloat==13.45, and myConstInt==20 */ int i = (int)f; int i2 = (int)(myFloat * myConstInt); After stepping through the code, i==269, and i2==268. What's going on here to account for the difference?

  • Const parameter at constructor causes stackoverflow

    - by Luca
I've found this strange behavior with VS2005 C++ compiler. Here is the situation: I cannot publish the code, but situation is very simple. Here is initial code: it work perfectly class Foo { public: Foo(Bar &bar) { ... } } The constructor implementation stores a reference, setup some members... indeed nothing special. If I change the code in the following way: class Foo { public: Foo(const Bar &bar) { ... } } I've added a const qualifier to the only constructor routine parameter. It compiles correctly, but the compiler outputs a warning saying that the routine Foo::Foo will cause a stackoverflow (even if the execution path doesn't construct any object Foo); effectively this happens. So, why the code without the const parameter works perfectly, while the one with the const qualifier causes a stackoverflow? What can cause this strange behavior?

  • event listener says NetStream.Play.Start but I see no video

    - by Curtis
I'm trying to test out the Adobe Media Server, and I'm following some tutorials in order to stream a video. I have a NetConnection which successfully connects to the application on the server, then I have the code below. It looks like it's supposed to play a video, but it doesn't. It creates the video object as a black square in the top left corner, and the event.info.code says NetStream.Play.Start, but I don't see the video playing. case "NetConnection.Connect.Success": var v:Video = new Video(); v.width=200; v.height=200; v.x=0; v.y=0; v.visible=true; v.opaqueBackground=false; stage.addChild(v); var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc); ns.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS,netStatusHandler); v.attachNetStream(ns); ns.play("mp4:polymorphics.f4v"); I can also try ns.play("rtmp://localhost/vod/mp4:tests/polymorphics.f4v"); but that gives me a Stream Not Found error The lines that begin with "ns" means that they're generated by my NetStream listener, as opposed to my NetConnection listener. Connecting... connected is: true event.info.level: status event.info.code: NetConnection.Connect.Success onReply recieved value: Hello, World! ns connected is: true ns event.info.level: status ns event.info.code: NetStream.Play.Reset ns connected is: true ns event.info.level: status ns event.info.code: NetStream.Play.Start

  • How to take input for a character pointer without using fget?

    - by ashish yadav
consider the code #include<stdio.h> int main() { char* a; scanf("%s",a);//&a and &a[0] give same results-crashes printf("%s",); return 0; } why does this code results in crashing?whereas this code using character array works fine? #include<stdio.h> int main() { char a[100]; scanf("%s",&a[0]);//works fine printf("%s",a); return 0; } the difference being character array and pointer?but i knew that pointer just points to the first element that is &a[0] should work fine but upper code crashes for all three that is a,&a and &a[0]? the main thing i would to gather is how can i take input of a character pointer if i insist on using scanf only? i apologize if i am not clear. thanks in advance:)
