  • Please help us non-C++ developers understand what RAII is

    Another question I thought for sure would have been asked before, but I don't see it in the "Related Questions" list. Could you C++ developers please give us a good description of what RAII is, why it is important, and whether or not it might have any relevance to other languages? I do know a little bit. I believe it stands for "Resource Acquisition is Initialization". However, that name doesn't jive with my (possibly incorrect) understanding of what RAII is: I get the impression that RAII is a way of initializing objects on the stack such that, when those variables go out of scope, the destructors will automatically be called causing the resources to be cleaned up. So why isn't that called "using the stack to trigger cleanup" (UTSTTC:)? How do you get from there to "RAII"? And how can you make something on the stack that will cause the cleanup of something that lives on the heap? Also, are there cases where you can't use RAII? Do you ever find yourself wishing for garbage collection? At least a garbage collector you could use for some objects while letting others be managed? Thanks.

    How to convert an large image and embed it into postscript? I used to convert the bitmap into HEX codes and render with colorimage. It works for small icons but I hit a /limitcheck error in ghostscript when I try to embed little larger images. It seem there is a memory limit for bitmap in ghostscript. I am looking a solution which can run without 3rd party/pre-processing other then ghostscript itself.

    The node-binary binary parser builds its object with the following pattern: exports.parse = function parse (buffer) { var self = {...} self.tap = function (cb) {...}; self.into = function (key, cb) {...}; ... return self; }; How do I inherit my own, enlightened parser from this? Is this pattern designed intentionally to make inheritance awkward? My only successful attempt thus far at inheriting all the methods of binary.parse(<something>) is to use _.extend as: var clever_parser = function(buffer) { if (this instanceof clever_parser) { this.parser = binary.parse(buffer); // I guess this is super.constructor(...) _.extend(this.parser, this); // Really? return this.parser; } else { return new clever_parser(buffer); } } This has failed my smell test, and that of others.     Hi, I have MainActivity which is an Activity and other class(which is a simple java class), we`ll call it "SimpleClass". now i want to run from that class the command startActivityForResult. now i though that i could pass that class(SimpleClass), only MainActivity's context, problem is that, u cant run context.startActivityForResult(...); so the only way making SimpleClass to use 'startActivityForResult; is to pass the reference of MainActivity as an Activity variable to the SimpleClass something like that: inside the MainActivity class i create the instance of SimpleClass this way: SimpleClass simpleClass=new SimpleClass(MainActivity.this); now this is how SimpleClass looks like: public Class SimpleClass { Activity myMainActivity; public SimpleClass(Activity mainActivity) { super(); this.myMainActivity=mainActivity; } .... } public void someMethod(...) { myMainActivity.startActivityForResult(...); } now its working, but isnt a proper way of doing this? Wouldn't it be better to use all the accuracy available from DateTime.Now?

  • Non distinct Unique ID in MySQL database table.

    First of, a simplified version: I am wondering if I can create a trigger to activate during INSERT (it's actually LOAD DATA INFILE) and NOT enter records for an RMA already in my table? I have a table that has no records that are unique. Some may be duplicates but there is one field that I can use to know if the data has been entered or not. For instance RMA Op Days --------------------- 213 Repair 0.10 213 Test 0.20 213 Repair 0.10 So I could do an index on the three columns together but as you see it's possible for an RMA to be in a step for the same amount of time twice so it's possible to have duplicate records. This data comes from a report that I cannot edit and this is all it provides. The key is that an RMA's data is only in the report once so if my database already has that RMA in it's records I want to skip the loading of that RMA's records from the report. By all means please let me know if that didn't make sense, I'll Explain as needed. I'm sure it's not uncommon but I couldn't find anything on the net.

  • Sharepoint 2007 calculated Date field shows incorrectly in non-US region

    If a SharePoint user (with Regional Settings set to UK) views a calculated date field in a View details form, the field shows incorrectly. I am using: ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@RenewalDate), 1033, 'dd MMMM yyyy') Which shows 04 January 2010 for 01/04/2010 and, doesnt show unresolvable dates such as 31-Dec-2010. This applies even with a simnple =[Modified] formula The Server is set up in the US for that locale.

    Hi there, I'm trying to build a GHashTable of instances of a struct containing ints, a time_t and a few char*'s. My question is, how do you insert an instance of a struct into a GHashTable? there are plenty of examples of how to insert a string or an int (using g_str_hash and g_int_hash respectively), but I'm guessing thatI want to use the g_direct_hash, and I can't seem to find any examples of that. Ideally, my code would look like this: GHashtable table; table = g_hash_table_new(g_direct_hash, g_direct_equal); struct mystruct; mystruct.a = 1; mystruct.b = "hello"; mystruct.c = 5; mystruct.d = "test"; g_hash_table_insert(table,mystruct.a,mystruct); Clearly, this is incorrect as it does not compile.     I am starting one POS (Point of sale) project. Targeting system is going to be written in C# .NET 2 WinForms and as main database server We are going to use MS-SQL Server. As we have a lot of POS devices in chain for one store I will love to have backend local data base system on each POS device. Scenario are following: When main server goes down!! POS application should continue working "off-line" with local database, until connection to main server come up again. Now I am in dilemma which local database is going to be most adoptable for me. Here is some notes for helping me point me in right direction: To be Light "My POS devices art usually old and suffering with performances" To be Free "I have a lot of devices and I do not wont additional cost beside main SQL serer" One day Ill love to try all that port on Mono and Linux OS. Here is what I've researched so far: Simple XML "Light but I am afraid of performance, My main table of items is average of 10K records" SQL-Expres "I am afraid that my POS devices is poor with hardware for SQLExpres, and also hard to install on each device and configure" Less known Advantage Database Server have free distribution of offline ADT system. DBF with extended Library,"Respect for good old DBFs but that era is behind Me with clipper and DBFs" MS Access Sqlite "Mostly like for now, but I am afraid how it is going to pair with MS SQL do they have same Data taypes". I know that in this SO is a lot of subjective data, but at least can someone recommended some others lite database system, or things that I shod most take attention before I choice database.

  • how do i claim a low-numbered port as non-root the "right way"

    I have a script that I want to run as a daemon listening on a low-numbered port (< 1024) Script is in python, though answers in perl are also acceptable. The script is being daemonized using start-stop-daemon in a startup script, which may complicate the answer What I really (think) don't want is to type ps -few and see this process running with a "root" on it's line. How do I do it? ( from my less-than-fully-educated-about-system-calls perspective, I can see 3 avenues, Run the script as root (no --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon), and have it de-escalate it's user after it claims the port Setuid root on the script (chmod u+s), and run the script as the running user, (via --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon, the startup script still has to be called as root), in the script, acquire root privileges, claim the port, and then revert back to normal user something else i'm unaware of )

  • Asp.Net Login Control very slow initial connection to Non-Trusted AD Domain

    ASP.NET Login control is very slow making the initial connection to AD when authenticating to a different domain than the domain the web server is a member of. Problem occurs for the IIS server and when using with the Visual Studio's built in web server. It takes about 30 seconds the first time when attempting to use the control to connect against another domain. There is no trust relationship bewteen the web server's domain and the other domains (attempted connecting to several different domains). Subsequent connections execute quickly until the connection times out. Using Systernals Process Monitor to troubleshoot, there are two OpenQuery operations right before the delay to "C:\WINDOWS\asembly\GAC_MSIL\System.DirectoryServices\2.0.0.0_b03f5f7f11d50a3a\Netapi32.dll with a result NAME NOT FOUND" and right after the 30 second delay the TCP Send and TCP Recieves indicate communication begins with the AD server. Things we have tried: Impersonating an administrator on the web server in the web.config; Granting permissions to the CryptoKeys to the NetworkService and ASPNET; Specifying by IP instead of DNS name; Multiple variations of specifying the name and ldap server with domains and OU's; Local host entries; Looked for ports being blocked (SYN_SENT) with netstat -an. Nslookup resolves all the domains and systems involved correectly. TraceRt shows the Correct routes Any Idea or hints are greately appreicated.

  • GKPeerStateAvailable for non existing peers?

    Hi, used this website for the long time to find answers, now need to ask on myself! :) I have implemented multi player for my game using GKSession and client/server approach, not using peer picker (up to 4 player allowed). I have one big problem which I can't find solution for. If you disconnect/reconnect server peer quickly enough, client peer will "remember" that host and will show it in the list of all available peers permanently, only turning wifi/bluetooth off resets this. So if I do this 5 times in a row, my client will show 5 available hosts with the same name! Anyone had experience with this? Any idea of workarounds? I should note that requirements for my game is iPhone SDK 3.0 for Bluetooth and 3.1 for Wifi as GKSession supports both now.

  • Change Windows Authentication user for Sql Server Management Studio

    We're using Sql Server 2005 with Windows Authentication setup. So normally, when you log in using e.g. Sql Server Management Studio, it forces you to log in at MACHINE_NAME\Username. Anyways, on this one particular computer, the person said they had to make a new account called User01 to do something and showed me where she'd created it under security in the "master" system database. And so now when she logs in, it's listed as MACHINE_NAME\User01 (not the actual Windows user name). It's still set to Windows Authentication, though, and I'm unable to change the login name. Now here's where the real problem comes in... I didn't realize that she was being logged in under this user name at the time, and I disabled it to see what would happen. Now I can't log into the server under her account. I created a new account in Windows called test, and as expected SSMS had the username as MACHINE_NAME\test, and I was able to log in fine. However, the area where the User01 account was listed is not visible to me as far as I can tell and so I can't reenable it. I also tried running the following query: alter login User01 ENABLE And got this error: Msg 15151, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot alter the login 'User01', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. So in a nutshell, ideally I'd like to reenable User01 somehow, just to get things back to where they used to be. Failing that, how can I force SSMS to log in using the Windows account name as it should be, rather than trying to use User01?

But if I've made a mistake, jEdit just waits around forever for the exec() call to "succeed," which it never will.
