• Compressing a web service response for jQuery

  I'm attempting to gzip a JSON response from an ASMX web service to be consumed on the client-side by jQuery. • My AJAX is only firing once,

• Apache RewriteRule: it is possible to 'detect' the first and second parameter?

  Im really really a newbie in regexp and i cant figure out how to do that. • Trying to build a Drupal-like CMS in ASP.NET MVC - Newbie Questions

  I am new to ASP.NET MVC, and the ASP.NET technology in general, so, please, excuse the stupidity of my questions. I have a lot of experience with php development and CMS customization (Drupal and Wordpress mainly), and I wanted to know whether some techniques could be applied in asp.net mvc. I want to know what exactly could be modified without recompiling an already built application Can I edit the views without recompiling the app. Can I create custom themes ? Can I add plugins compiled as dlls and use them at runtime. Can I "mark" the assembly in such a way that the web application will check on the next request and will reference it, without me manually adding it to the project and recompiling. I've heard that this is possible. I will make sure to add more when something comes up. The reason I am asking is because I'd like to try and develop a Drupal-like CMS (custom types, views, etc) in asp.net mvc. The dynamism of php will be quite a challenge to replicate in a compiled technology, yet I am ready to try.

• How to express inter project dependencies in Eclipse PDE

  I am looking for the best practice of handling inter project dependencies between mixed project types where some of the projects are eclipse plug-in/OSGI bundle projects (an RCP application) and others are just plain old java projects (web services modules). Few of the eclipse plug-ins have dependencies on Java projects. My problem is that at least as far as I've looked, there is no way of cleanly expressing such a dependency in Eclipse PDE environment. I can have plug-in projects depend on other plug-in projects (via Import-Package or Require-Bundle manifest headers), but not of the plain java projects. I seem to be able to have project declare a dependency on a jar from another project in a workspace, but these jar files do not get picked up by neither export nor launch configuration (although, java code editing sees the libraries just fine). The "Java projects" are used for building services to be deployed on an J2EE container (JBoss 4.2.2 for the moment) and produce in some cases multiple jar's - one for deploying to the JBoss ear and another for use by client code (an RCP application). The way we've "solved" this problem for now is that we have 2 more external tools launcher configurations - one for building all the jar's and another for copying these jar's to the plug-in projects. This works (sort of), but the "whole build" and "copy jars" targets incur quite a large build step, bypassing the whole eclipse incremental build feature and by copying the jars instead of just referencing the projects I am decoupling the dependency information and requesting quite a massive workspace refresh that eats up the development time like it was candy. What I would like to have is a much more "natural" workspace setup that would manage dependencies between projects and request incremental rebuilds only as they are needed, be able to use client code from service libraries in an RCP application plug-ins and be able to launch the RCP application with all the necessary classes where they are needed. So can I have my cake and eat it too ;) NOTE To be clear, this is not so much about dependency management and module management at the moment as it is about Eclipse PDE configuration. I am well aware of products like [Maven], [Ivy] and [Buckminster] and they solve a quite different problem (once I've solved the workspace configuration issue, these products can actually come in handy for materializing the workspace and building the product)

  Hi there, Which of the following would you say is the best way to go when combining files for CSS: Say I have a master.css file that is used across all pages on my website (page1.aspx, page2.aspx) Page1.aspx - A specific page that has some unique css that is only ever used on that page, so I create a page1.css and it also uses another css grids.css Page2.aspx - Another specific page that is different from all other pages on the site and is different to page1.aspx, I'll name this page2.aspx and make a page2.css this doesn't use grids.css So would you combine the scripts as: Option1: Combine scripts csshandler.axd?d=master.css,page1.css,grids.css when visiting page1 Combine scripts csshandler.axd?d=master.css,page2.css when visiting page2 Benefits: Page specific, rendering quicker since only selectors for that page need to be matched up no unused selectors Drawback: Multiple combinations of master.css + page specific hence master.css has to be downloaded for each page Option2: Combine all scripts whether a page needs them or not csshandler.axd?d=master.css,page1.css,page2.css,grids.css (master, page1 and page2) that way it gets cached as one. The problem is that rendering maybe slower since it will have to try and match EVERY selector in the css with selectors on the page even the missing ones, so in the case of page2.aspx that doesn't use grids.css the selectors in grids.css will need to be parsed to see if they are in page2 which means rendering will be slow Benefits: One file will ever be downloaded and cached doesn't matter what page you visit Drawback: Unused selectors will need to be parsed by the browser slower rendering Option3: Leave the master file on it's own and only combine other scripts (the benefit of this is because master is used across all pages there is a chance that this is cached so doesn't need to keep on downloading csshandler.axd?d=Master.css csshandler.axd?d=page1.css,grids.css Benefits: master.css file can be cached doesn't matter what page you visit. • IIS8 Asp.net State service remote connection failure

  Recently we upgrade our web server to windows server 2012 with IIS8. We have this issue when users try to connect the asp.net state service to this web server remotely. It always popup Unable to make the session state request to the session state server. Please ensure that the ASP.NET State service is started and that the client and server ports are the same. If the server is on a remote machine, please ensure that it accepts remote requests by checking the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\aspnet_state\Parameters\AllowRemoteConnection. If the server is on the local machine, and if the before mentioned registry value does not exist or is set to 0, then the state server connection string must use either 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' as the server name. In IIS7 / 7.5 we use the same way and it works fine. As long as the state service is running and firewall is set properly, we don't have any problem. However, in IIS8 it doesn't work. (We even turn off firewall to test it) Thanks for helping.

• API Wrapper Architecture Best Practice

  Hi, So I'm writing a Perl wrapper module around a REST webservice and I'm hoping to have some advice on how best to architect the module. I've been looking at a couple of different Perl modules for inspiration. Flickr::Simple2 - so this is basically one big file with methods wrapping around the different methods in the Flickr API, e.g. getPhotos() etc. Flickr::API - this is a sub-class of another module (LWP) for making HTTP requests. So basically it just allows you to make calls through the module, using LWP, that go to the correct API method/URL without defining any wrapper methods itself. (That's explained pretty poorly - but basically it has a method that takes an argument (a API method name) and constructs the correct API call). e.g request() / response(). An alternative design would be like the first described, but less monolithic, with separate classes for separate "areas" of the API. I'd like to follow modern/best practice Perl methods so I'm using Dist::Zilla to build the module and Moose for the OO stuff but I'd appreciate some input on how to actually design/architect my wrapper. Guides/tutorials or pointers to other well designed modules would be appreciated. Cheers

• .Net MVC UserControl - Form values not mapped to model

  Hi I have a View that contains a usercontrol. The usercontrol is rendered using: <% Html.RenderPartial("GeneralStuff", Model.General, ViewData); %> My problem is that the usercontrol renders nicely with values from the model but when I post values edited in the usercontrol they are not mapped back to Model.General. I know I can find the values in Request.Form but I really thought that MVC would manage to map these values back to the model. • Why do properties require explicit typing during compilation?

  Compilation using property syntax requires the type of the receiver to be known at compile time. I may not understand something, but this seems like a broken or incomplete compiler implementation considering that Objective-C is a dynamic language. The property "comment" is defined with: @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *comment; and synthesized with: @synthesize comment; "document" is an instance of one of several classes which conform to: @protocol DocumentComment <NSObject> @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *comment; @end and is simply declared as: id document; When using the following property syntax: stringObject = document.comment; the following error is generated by gcc: error: request for member 'comment' in something not a structure or union However, the following equivalent receiver-method syntax, compiles without warning or error and works fine, as expected, at run-time: stringObject = [document comment]; I don't understand why properties require the type of the receiver to be known at compile time. Is there something I am missing? I simply use the latter syntax to avoid the error in situations where the receiving object has a dynamic type. Properties seem half-baked.

• Create ABPerson Records in a Shared CardDAV (10.6/Server Hosted) AddressBook

  Hello, My app presently reads and writes to the local Mac OS X 10.6 client addressbook using the AddressBook.framework. It works fine. 10.6 Server introduced AddressBook Server, which 10.6 clients can connect to by setting up a CardDAV Account. User and Group records can be stored in that account, which is synchronized to the 10.6 server and made available to other clients who access the same CardDAV account. Mail.app is able to autocomplete the email addresses from accounts that are in the local datastore as well as the remote CardDAV datastore. ABPeoplePicker can see both. But, programatically, I'm not getting any CardDAV-based data returned from my queries against the shared AddressBook. I'm not sure if I need to ask it for a different AddressBook, or if I need to modify my fetch-request to indicate that I want it to be able to use the shared data too. My goal is to adapt the current code so that it can read/write to the CardDAV account too, instead of just the local addressbook. Thoughts?

  I've been struggling with this for a few days now, haven't pinpointed the problem. I am trying to get OpenID to work in Rails 2.3 and Rails 3, using ruby-openid rack-openid open_id_authentication I am logging in using my viatropos.myopenid.com account, but it consistently returns this error: Server http://www.myopenid.com/server responds that the 'check_authentication' call is not valid What could that be from, it's not a very descriptive error... Does it have to do with something ruby-specific, or is this entirely on the OpenID protocol side of things? More specifically, I am using Authlogic and ActiveRecord, so could this be a problem with my User or UserSession models somehow? Or is it more to do with the header or request? • Setting up a "cookieless domain" to improve site performance

  I was reading in Google's documentation about improving site speed. One of their recommendations is serving static content (images, css, js, etc.) from a "cookieless domain": Static content, such as images, JS and CSS files, don't need to be accompanied by cookies, as there is no user interaction with these resources. You can decrease request latency by serving static resources from a domain that doesn't serve cookies. Google then says that the best way to do this is to buy a new domain and set it to point to your current one: To reserve a cookieless domain for serving static content, register a new domain name and configure your DNS database with a CNAME record that points the new domain to your existing domain A record. Configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain. In your web pages, reference the domain name in the URLs for the static resources. This is pretty straight forward stuff, except for the bit where it says to "configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain". From what I've read, there's no setting in IIS that allows you to say "serve static resources", so how do I prevent ASP.NET from setting cookies on this new domain? At present, even if I'm just requesting a .jpg from the new domain, it sets a cookie on my browser, even though our application's cookies are set to our old domain. For example, ASP.NET sets an ".ASPXANONYMOUS" cookie that (as far as I'm aware) we're not telling it to do. Apologies if this is a real newb question, I'm new at this! Thanks.

• Running job in the background from Perl WITHOUT waiting for return

  The Disclaimer First of all, I know this question (or close variations) have been asked a thousand times. I really spent a few hours looking in the obvious and the not-so-obvious places, but there may be something small I'm missing. The Context Let me define the problem more clearly: I'm writing a newsletter app in which I want the actual sending process to be async. As in, user clicks "send", request returns immediately and then they can check the progress in a specific page (via AJAX, for example). It's written in your traditional LAMP stack. In the particular host I'm using, PHP's exec() and system() are disabled for security reasons, but Perl's system functions (exec, system and backticks) aren't. So my workaround solution was to create a "trigger" script in Perl that calls the actual sender via the PHP CLI, and redirects to the progress page. Where I'm Stuck The very line the calls the sender is, as of now: system("php -q sender.php &"); Problem being, it's not returning immediately, but waiting for the script to finish. I want it to run in the background but the system call itself returns right away. I also tried running a similar script in my Linux terminal, and in fact the prompt doesn't show until after the script has finished, even though my test output doesn't run, indicating it's really running in the background. What I already tried Perl's exec() function - same result of system(). Changing the command to: "php -q sender.php | at now"), hoping that the "at" daemon would return and that the PHP process itself wouldn't be attached to Perl. What should I try now?

• restart of web dev server every time load ASP.NET MVC application

  Hi, I continously get this problem (stack trace below) when I start my ASP.NET MVC application and have to restart the web dev server and then it goes away. It appears to be happening on when I make modification in my jquery and then try to restart the application. protected void Application_Start() { InitialiseIocContainer(); RegisterViewEngine(ViewEngines.Engines); RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); SetupLogging(); } It appears to get caugth on the Application_start in global.asax. I've done lots of search in google but no luck. • clientaccesspolicy.xml not being requested via HTTPS

  I have a silverlight app that has been using http to communicate w/self-hosted WCF services during development. I am now securing the services via https. I am getting an error I had back at the beginning of the project: "An error occurred while trying to make a request to URI 'https://localhost:8303/service'. This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way without a proper cross-domain policy in place, or a policy that is unsuitable for SOAP services. You may need to contact the owner of the service to publish a cross-domain policy file and to ensure it allows SOAP-related HTTP headers to be sent. This error may also be caused by using internal types in the web service proxy without using the InternalsVisibleToAttribute attribute. Please see the inner exception for more details." My clientaccesspolicy.xml file is setup to allow access from http://* and https://*. The only difference is using http vs https. The issue is I can usually see (via Fiddler) the clientaccesspolicy.xml file being requested, but now I cannot. I'm assuming it is failing because of this. Any ideas?

• JSP or .ascx equivalent for Scala?

  I'm working on a small MVC "framework" (it's really very small) in Scala. I'd like to be able to write my view files as Scala code so I can get lots of help from the compiler. Pre-compiling is great, but what I really want is a way to have the servlet container automatically compile certain files (my view files) on request so I don't have to shut down Jetty and compile all my source files at once, then start it up again just to see small changes to my HTML. I do this a lot with .ascx files in .NET (the file will contain just one scriptlet tag with a bunch of C# code inside which writes out markup using an XmlWriter) and I love this workflow. You just make changes and then refresh your browser, but it's still getting compiled! I don't have a lot of experience with Java, but it seems possible to do this with JSP as well. I'm wondering if this sort of thing is possible in Scala. I have looked into building this myself (see more info here: http://www.nabble.com/Compiler-API-td12050645.html) but I would rather use something else if it's out there.

• Java OutOfMemoryError due to Linux RAM disk cache not freed

  The process will run fine all day, then, bam, without warning, it will throw this error. Sometimes seemingly in the middle of doing nothing. It will happen at seemingly random times during the day. I checked to see if anything else was running on the machine, like scheduled backups or something, but found nothing. The machine has enough physical memory (2GB, with about 1GB free for a 3-500MB load), and has sufficient -Xmx specified. According to our sysadmin, the problem is that the RAM that the kernel uses as a disk cache (apparently all but 8MB) is not freed when the JVM needs to allocate memory, so the JVM process throws an OutOfMemoryError. This could be because Java asks the kernel if enough memory is available before allocating and finds that it is insufficient, resulting in a crash. I would like to think, however, that Java simply tries to allocate the memory via the kernel, and when the kernel gets such a request, it makes room for the application by throwing our some of the disk cache. Has anyone else run in to the issue, and if so, what was the error, and how did you solve it? We are currently using jdk1.6.0_20 on SLES 10 SP2 Linux 2.6.16.60-0.42.9-smp in VMWare ESX.

Does anyone know how I can get the values I should be sending there, and how I can make rails read it from HTTP POST rather than trying to find it as a cookie?
