    I recently noticed the CallByName keyword in VB6. Since this takes a object, procedure name, "call type" and arguments array, can this be used to "fake" some types of polymorphic behavior? I can make 2 classes, class A and B, each with the same method Foo, and do: Dim list As New Collection Dim instanceA As New ClassA Dim instanceB As New ClassB Dim current As Object Call list.Add(instanceA) Call list.Add(instanceB) For Each current in list Call CallByName(current, "methodName", vbMethod) Next Anyone done this before? Problems? Horrible idea or genius idea? Implications? Unintended consequences?

  • Can I programatically determine if a PNG is animated?

    I have PNG (as well as JPEG) images uploaded to my site. They should be static (i.e. one frame). There is such thing as APNG. (it will be animated in Firefox). According to the Wikipedia article... APNG hides the subsequent frames in PNG ancillary chunks in such a way that APNG-unaware applications would ignore them, but there are otherwise no changes to the format to allow software to distinguish between animated and non-animated images. Does this mean it is impossible to determine if a PNG is animated with code? If it is possible, can you please point me in the right direction PHP wise (GD, ImageMagick)?

(I do not use hibernate) Use the HashMap to send the domain object field values in the form of Map with the help of BeanUtilsBean class. For multiple objects, use the List. Similary, use the Map to submit form values from client to server Is there any performance advantage for option 1 over 2?. Is there a way to hide the classname/package name that is sent to the browser if we use option 1?. thanks!.

    Few of our clients are regularly getting invalid cast exception, with variations i.e. InvalidCastException / ProviderException, but both generating from method call: System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider.GetRolesForUser(String username) The other variation is: Exception type: InvalidCastException Exception message: Unable to cast object of type System.Int32 to type System.String.     This is what I think of REST architecture. For every resource, there is an unique URI. We can manipulate that object using its URI and HTTP actions [POST, GET, PUT and DELETE]. The HTTP request transfers the representation of the state of that object. In all the texts I have read, REST is explained in a weird and confusing manner. One more thing, RESTFUL implementation in rails produces different urls for different purposes. Like /teams - for 'index' method... /teams/new - for 'new' method and so on. Ain't this moving away from rest, which defines that each resource has one unique URI???

    I am used to writing C# Windows application. However I have some free hosted PHP web space that I would like to make use of. I have a basic understanding of PHP but have never used it's object oriented capabilities. Is there an easy way to convert C# classes to PHP classes or is it just not possible to write a fully object oriented application in PHP? Update: There are no reliance on the .NET framework beyond the basics. The main aim would be to restructure the class properties, variable enums, etc. The PHP will be hosted on a Linux server.

If so, how? EDIT #1: I added the following: Console.WriteLine( "user: " + user ); Below this line: UserPrincipal user = UserPrincipal.FindByIdentity(context, "someLimitedAccount"); And I get this: user: It doesn't look like user is null when I print it, but then again I'm not really a .Net guy - I seem to remember this being expected behavior.

Also, I am open to suggestions for optimizing the query - adding more index on the tables etc... My background is in imperative/object-oriented programming languages, and therefore, I am used to use case analysis and the use of UML to document the design of program. But the thing is that UML is inherently related to the object-oriented way of doing software. And I am intrigued about what would be the best way to develop documentation and define software designs for a system that is going to be developed using functional programming. Would you still use use case analysis or perhaps structured analysis and design instead? How do software architects define the high-level design of the system so that developers follow it? What do you show to you clients or to new developers when you are supposed to present a design of the solution? How do you document a picture of the whole thing without having first to write it all? Is there anything comparable to UML in the functional world?

  • Solution Items in Visual Studio 2005/2008

    Is it possible to add a class as a solution item and use it as a linked item in all the projects in the solution? Basically I was thinking of creating a class (which will inherit ConfigurationSection) and keeping it as the Solution Item. I wanted to add it as a linked item in all the projects in the solution, so that everyone can use it to access the configuration properties. (Refer to this tutorial for more details) Now the issue I am facing is that when I create a class in the solution item, it doesn't have any namespace. And it shows up in intellisense, inside the projects but once I create an object of the solution item class, the object doesn't show up in intellisense. Any ideas why?

Using one of the provided examples: import formish, schemaish structure = schemaish.Structure() structure.add( 'a', schemaish.String() ) structure.add( 'b', schemaish.Integer() ) schema = schemaish.Structure() schema.add( 'myStruct', structure ) form = formish.Form(schema, 'form') If we pass this a valid request object: form.validate(request) The output is a structure like this: {'myStruct': {'a': 'value', 'b': 0 }} However, pre-populating the form using defaults requires this: form.defaults = {'myStruct.a': 'value', 'myStruct.b': 0} The dottedish package has a DottedDict object that can convert a nested dict to a dotted dict, but this asymmetry doesn't seem right. Is there a better way to do this?

  • Puzzled with nib files...

    I know nib files are serialized objects and they have owner, outlets to make connections. Using XCode Navigation window template I created application, which in its order created 2 nib files - MainWindow and SecondView. I can't understand how MainWindow is referring to SecondView, there is no connection between those two as far as I can see. SecondView's owner is UIViewController and in MainWindow there is a navigation tab which is also UIViewController. But how they are connected in IB I can't understand... Also I don't understand who is instanciating MainWindow's owner object and where that object is being kept, where is the variable which is UIApplication myApp = [[UIApplication alloc] init]. If I create 10 nib files with UIViewController owner, who will trigger their deserialization? If some class is nib file's owner, what is the essential responsibilities of that class? Is it deserializing nib file into memory? Sorry for unorganized questions, I've been reading numerous articles and docs about nib files, but it is still confusing.

  • Spring.NET & Immediacy CMS (or how to inject to server side controls without using PageHandlerFactor

    Is there any way to inject dependencies into an Immediacy CMS control using Spring.NET, ideally without having to use to ContextRegistry when initialising the control? Update, with my own answer The issue here is that Immediacy already has a handler defined in web.config that deals with all aspx pages, & so it's not possible add an entry for Spring.NET's PageHandlerFactory in web.config as per a normal webforms app. That rules out making the control implement ISupportsWebDependencyInjection. Furthermore, most of Immediacy's generated pages are aspx pages that don't physically exist on the drive. I have changed the title of the question to reflect this. What I have done to get Dependency Injection working is: Add the usual entries to web.config for Spring.NET as outlined in the documentation, except for the adding the entry to the <httpHandlers> section. In this case I've got my object definitions in Spring.config. Create the following abstract base class that will deal with all of the Dependency Injection work: DIControl.cs public abstract class DIControl : ImmediacyControl { protected virtual string DIName { get { return this.GetType().Name; } } protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { if (ContextRegistry.GetContext().GetObject(DIName, this.GetType()) != null) ContextRegistry.GetContext().ConfigureObject(this, DIName); base.OnInit(e); } } For non-immediacy controls, you can make this server side control inherit from Control or whatever subclass of that you like. For any control with which you wish to use with Spring.NET's Inversion of Control container, define it to inherit from DIControl & add the relelvant entry to Spring.config, for example: SampleControl.cs public class SampleControl : DIControl, INamingContainer { public string Text { get; set; } protected string InjectedText { get; set; } public SampleControl() : base() { Text = "Hello world"; } protected override void RenderContents(HtmlTextWriter output) { output.Write(string.Format("{0} {1}", Text, InjectedText)); } } Spring.config <objects xmlns="http://www.springframework.net"> <object id="SampleControl" type="MyProject.SampleControl, MyAssembly"> <property name="InjectedText" value="from Spring.NET" /> </object> </objects> You can optionally override DIName if you wish to name your entry in Spring.config differently from the name of your class. Provided everything's done correctly, you will have the control writing out "Hello world from Spring.NET!" when used in a page. This solution uses Spring.NET's ContextRegistry from within the control, but I would be surprised if there's no way around that for Immediacy at least since the page objects themselves aren't accessible. However, can this be improved at all from a Spring.NET perspective? Is there maybe an Immediacy plugin that already does this that I'm completely unaware of? Or is there an approach that does this in a more elegant way? I'm open to suggestions.

    I'm trying to embed a custom control in a Datagridview. I've looked at the Calendar (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7tas5c80.aspx) example but i just cant get it working for a custom control. I need the control to show for each object in the grid. Not just when the user edits the content. I need to do this so that i can bind my dataviewgrid to a datasource and have it create the required forms in the grid for each my object list. So that the user can do inline editing in the grid without having to double click the row and have a new dialog pop up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    This is me going right back to basics with TDD for learning purposes. I originally implemented Person.Surname as field of type object (the simplest possible way of passing the test. I then added a test setting Person.Surname stating that the return value should be a string and set Person.Surname=20. I 'fixed' the test by changing the implementation to use string rather than object. The test now long compiles due to static type checking, so I commented it out. So I'm left with no way of leaving my intention in the test. Is there a way of having a failing test in this circumstance?

    I'm trying to bind a table of structures to a DataGridView. Loading and viewing the table is working fine but I can't edit a value and get it stored back into the table. Here's what I'm doing. I have a "primitive" data type, Real defined by public struct MyReal:IMyPrimative { public Double m_Real; //... public MyReal(String val) { m_Real = default(Double); Init(val); } //... } It gets used in a structure: public struct MyReal_Record : IMyRecord { public MyReal Freq { get; set;} MyReal_Record(String[] vals) { Init(vals); } } And the structure is used to define a table using a generic Binding List public class MyTable<S> : BindingList<S> where S: struct, IMyRecord { public Type typeofS; public MyTable() { typeofS = typeof(S); // ... } This table is used as a binding source for a grid, dynamically. private void miLoadFile_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { MyModel.Table<Real_Record> RTable = new MyModel.Table<Real_Record>(); //... Table initialized here //set up grid with virtual mode dataGridView1.DataSource = RTable; } All of this works fine and I can create RTable, initialize it and display it in a grid. The grid allows editing and has events set for CellParsing and CellFormatting which look like: private void dataGridView1_CellFormatting(object sender, DataGridViewCellFormattingEventArgs e) { if (e.DesiredType != typeof(String)) return; e.Value = e.Value.ToString(); } private void dataGridView1_CellParsing(object sender, DataGridViewCellParsingEventArgs e) { if (e.DesiredType != typeof(MyReal)) return; e.Value = new MyReal(e.Value.ToString()); e.ParsingApplied = true; this.dataGridView1.UpdateCellValue(e.ColumnIndex, e.RowIndex); } When I edit a value in a cell, I can change the text. On leaving the cell, CellParsing fires and the event handler is called. Everything seems to be correct going into the CellParsing handler. e.DesiredType is MyReal. e.Value is a string with the new value. After the new MyReal is created from the string, e.Value is set correctly. RowIndex and ColumnIndex are correct. ReadOnly is set false. However, when I leave the cell, the system restores the original value to the cell. I thought the UpdateCellValue would replace the value in the dataSource but I seem to be missing something.     I new to silverlight and trying to make a business application using the mvvm pattern and ria services. I have a view model class that contains a PagedCollectoinView and it is set to the item source of a datagrid. When I update the PagedCollectionView the datagrid is only updated the first time then after that subsequent changes to the data to not reflect in the view until after another edit. Things seem to be delayed one edit. Below is a summarized example of my xaml and code behind. Ho can I keep the reference to the main object inside XMLHttpRequest events?
