• Video Training Courses for Linux/Ubuntu?

  I'm a software developer with more than 15 years of experience on Windows platform, focused on C#/.NET/SQL Server stack. Recently I decided to explore Linux and learn a new development technology stack which is completely unrelated to Microsoft. After a bit of (re)search/reading I picked Ubuntu as my starting point. As I'm really a Pluralsight addict, preferring video courses as a starting point for learning new stuff, I wanted to ask if there are any decent video courses for Linux generally or Ubuntu focused ones? Basically I'm searching for general explanation of OS structure, a bit of system administration, and maybe some considerations for development on Linux system.

• How do i make/setup a mailing list?

  I know i could program it myself but maybe there is a simple (thats the keyword) package. I like to add a box, snippet, form or page to my site for users to input their email address. Then i'd like it to automatically send email saying you have successfully subscribe. I'd want an unsubscribe link and i would be using smtp on google apps. I would like to send email with html so i can have a simple sentence with a complex link such as this I dont know if i'll get marked as spam if i try to send everyone an email at once? so i'd like the software to manage it. Also i'd like to get the emails in a simple format like csv. Is there a simple app that does this? if not i can write a simple form which does a simple insert (or delete when unsubscribing) and write a 200-300line app to send my emails out for me.

• How can I start Busybox at boot time, from GRUB, or even before GRUB?

  Most Busybox questions are related to the fact that users are dropped to a Busybox shell due to some unknown issues at boot time. This must make Busybox one of the most hated pieces of software. My problem is the opposite. I want to deliberately start Busybox at boot time either from GRUB, or even before GRUB. Is this possible? How can I do it? The purpose is to execute some commands before the boot sequence is reinitiated. So basically I want to execute some commands to make some hardware available to the bootloader.

• Problems detecting android tablet IView 788TPC with mtp-tools

  I installed mtp-tools on 14.04 "Trusty" through Software Center. No problems with install. Issuing `mtp-detect' results in 'Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp version: 1.1.6 Listing raw device(s) No raw devices found.' I did some research and found that mtpfs might be required. so installed that with :~$ sudo apt-get install mtpfs I still get the following result :~$ mtp-detect Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp version: 1.1.6 Listing raw device(s) No raw devices found. My research indicates that the mtp-tools package is still under development. source: http://libmtp.sourceforge.net/ and the documentation is not comprehensive. source man mtp-tools as well as mtp-detect -h I tried adding the PPA from Are there any plans to improve mtp support on future Ubuntu releases? but it seems this is already worked into trusty 14.04 and won't resolve the problem.   I've free dos laptop with i3 processor 4gb ram nd 500gb hdd. I've installed windows 8 manually and created all partitions. My partitions are: C: Windows8 90GB NTFS D: Blank 25GB FAT32 E: Entertainment 117GB NTFS F: Other 117GB NTFS G: Software 117GB NTFS Now, I've made flash drive for Ubuntu 13.04 and want to install on D: I've tried a lot to install on that partition but every time I got error of No mount point selected. But actually I've selected / as mount point. So please help me to solve this problem. and also suggest me what to do for /home. Note: I want to access windows 8 as my main operating system.

The clause in question: Neither the name of BCrypt.Net nor the names of its contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission. To what extent does this mean I can't use the name of Bcrypt.Net? For instance, could I say "the only ASP.Net authentication library capable of using Bcrypt" or can I even include "supports Bcrypt for password hashing" in promotional materials? • Where can I change the webpage showed by apache?

  I have ubuntu 10.10 installed, and when I hit my IP I see: It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. Where should I look to see where this is being served from? The strange thing is, I just installed nginx and setup a static page that is served on port 80 also (should be conflicting with the default apache that is serving the 'it works page'), when I restart nginx I don't get bind error sayign port 80 is already taken. I dont' use apache, and don't want it but the default install seems to have it. I ahve no idea where it is, I don't see it in /opt or etc/apache . thanks!

• What do I need to get a job with a major game company?

  I've been recently working with DirectX and getting familiar with game engines, sub-systems and have done game development for the last 5 years. I have a real question for those whom have worked in larger game making companies before. How is it possible to get to into these big game creators such as Ubisoft, Infinity Ward or EA. I'm not a beginner in my field and I'm going to produce a real nice 2D platform with my team this year, which is the result of 5 years 2D game creation experience. I'm working with prepared engines such as Unity3D or Game Maker software and using .Net with C# to write many tools for our production and proceeding in my way but never had a real engine programming experience 'till now. I'm now reading good books around this topic but I wanted to know: Is it possible to become an employee in big game company by just reading books? I mean beside having an active mind and new ideas and being a solution solver.

• Renderbuffer to GLSL shader?

  I have a software that performs volume rendering through a raycasting approach. The actual raycasting shader writes the raycasted volume depth into a framebuffer object, through gl_FragDepth, that I bind before calling the shader. The problem I have is that I would like to use this depth in another shader that I call later on. I figured out that the only way to do that is to bind the framebuffer once the raycasting has finished, read the depthmap through something like glReadPixels(0, 0, m_winSize.x , m_winSize.y, GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT, GL_FLOAT, pixels); and write it to a 2D texture as usual glTexImage2D(GL_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT24, m_winSize.x, m_winSize.y, 0, GL_DEPTH_COMPONENT, GL_FLOAT, pixels) and then pass this 2D texture that contains a simple depth map to the other shader. However, I am not entirely sure that what I do is the proper way to do this. Is there anyway to pass the framebuffer that I fill up in my raycasting shader to the other shader?

  Let's say I have an online game with a downloadable client / browser plugin. I want to track performance of my software and automatically send summary to the server. Let it be fps, latency, load time, physics step calc. time, whatever... I also want tools to perform data analysis: per session stats, per hardware stats, avgs, totals, diagrams, etc. So that I could see what are the real world hotspots / bottlenecks. Is there any common out-of-the-box / SaS solution?

• Setting up UPS monitoring

  I have acquired a second hand Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) that I have refurbished (new battery) and hope to use with my Ubuntu 12.10 system. It's a SOLA 330 with serial out. I have installed NUT Metapackage and NUT Monitor from Software Centre, but am not sure how to go about setting it all up. A Google search brings up several ways of configuring Network UPS Tools (NUT) or HAL-Drivers, however, HAL-Drivers appears to be obsolete and many commands and config files mentioned to edit do not exist in 12.10 or the current version of NUT (most articles are a few years old). One tutorial seemed to work except the Error: no UPS definitions found in ups.conf even though ups.conf has values in it as laid out in the tutorial. How do I go about setting my system to monitor the UPS for a shut down signal? Also, is there a command to determine the UPS is communicating through the serial connection and on what port (to help with setup and configuring, eg. /dev/ttyS0 is mentioned in one of the tutorials I read).

  I am trying to installing gfortran on my ubuntu system and I am following the steps mentioned in http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GFortranBinaries32Linux , unfortunately one of the step in the installation steps to says Install using the following command: tar -xzvf gfortran-4.5-linux-i686.tar.gz -C / but the download link provides a .deb file which I have installed it. Now when I check for gfortran, it says not installed. Any clue? how should I follow the further? Steps I have completed are: 1) Installed libraries: GMP Library, MPFR Library, and MPC Library. 2)Downloaded the gfortran-4.6 Debian and installed using the cmd. sudo dpkg -i .deb anything else I need to do? do I need to create any path or symbolic link? please help,thanks! Please Note: I have no internet access and cannot use software center.

• Getting a TV Capture Card working

  I'm new to Linux, and am trying to get my Capture Card working on 11.04. The only command that I know to run to find out any information is lspci, which tells me that I have 02:00.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23885 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (rev 04) I've looked at using Me TV, but haven't worked out how to configure it for my card, or what I need to do to get it running. I'm not fussed on what software I use to run the Capture Card, but I've currently got only Me TV installed. Edit: When I run tvtime, I get the following errors: videoinput: Cannot open capture device /dev/video0: No such file or directory mixer: find error: Success mixer: Can't open mixer default, mixer volume and mute unavailable. mixer: Can't open device default/Line, mixer volume and mute unavailable.   While most people have seen a star trail photo or two, seeing a set of star trail photos taken from over 300 miles above the Earth’s surface is a treat. Courtesy of Astronaut and Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit, the photos capture star trails from the vantage point of the International Space Station. He explains his technique: My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure. In our company, which consists of many teams responsible for "classic" software development, business intelligence, virtualization, hardware, etc., we are kind of a small startup because we were the first to use agile methods like Scrum and we are open to new technologies and methods. Also our team is pretty young with me being the oldest with 30 years. We would like to further raise productivity and motivation and thus are currently collecting points which make up a good developer/hacker culture and which may be improved in our team/company. • No Internet On 12.04.1

  I have no internet on Ubuntu 12.04.1 so i'm on a desktop so I got to install a .exe program to run my wireless card for my desktop so I got internet access, But I can't seem to download wine or its source files. If I do I put on my usb and boot into Ubuntu but then when I try to open it I get the programs source files etc. Anyone who could help me Please do :| ( I can't install wine from software center since I have no connection online). Note : I can download my stuff on windows 8 boot so I can transfer files to my usb to run on Ubuntu.

• Any thoughts on Squarespace as a blogging platform?

  I'd like to start a blog and I'm leaning towards a hosted, paid platform. I don't want to maintain a Web server. I also don't want the hosting company to put their own ads or branding on my site. Squarespace looks interesting, though kind of pricey. About the same price as TypePad I guess. (I might consider TypePad, but I personally find their UI difficult to use.) WordPress is cheaper but I think they're more known for their software than their hosting. Has anyone tried Squarespace? Are there other options I should consider? Thanks.

• Video recording in cheese is slow

  cheese records at painful fps. video recording is really slow in cheese almost unusable. How can I increase the fps for cheese. I have HCL laptop with built in 1.3 MP camera 2.47 GHz i3 processor with 2 GB RAM. running maverick 32 bit. I installed camorama from software centre which has fine video (fps), but I cant seem to use it due to some error. So I doubt there is something to be tweaked with cheese itself.

  I am a C# programmer, and most of my development is for websites along with a few Windows application. As far as C goes, I haven't used it in a long time, as there was no need to. It came to me as a surprise when one of my friends said that she needs to learn C for testing jobs, while I was helping her learn C#. I figured that someone would only learn C for testing only if there is development done in C. In my knowledge, all the development related to COM and hardware design are also done in C++. Therefore, learning C doesn't make sense if you need to use C++. I also don't believe in historic significance, so why waste time and money in learning C? Is C is still used in any kind of new software development or anything else?

• Builder Pattern: When to fail?

  When implementing the Builder Pattern, I often find myself confused with when to let building fail and I even manage to take different stands on the matter every few days. First some explanation: With failing early I mean that building an object should fail as soon as an invalid parameter is passed in. So inside the SomeObjectBuilder. With failing late I mean that building an object only can fail on the build() call that implicitely calls a constructor of the object to be built. Then some arguments: In favor of failing late: A builder class should be no more than a class that simply holds values. Moreover, it leads to less code duplication. In favor of failing early: A general approach in software programming is that you want to detect issues as early as possible and therefore the most logical place to check would be in the builder class' constructor, 'setters' and ultimately in the build method. What is the general concensus about this?
