• Getting started with terminal services (remote desktop services) and thin clients

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 box and I want to make it a RDS server and connect with thin clients. I don't want to do VDI with hyper-v, as this box is already virtualized. RDS is installed and I've installed an RDS CAL. I've browsed the Technet articles, but navigating technet is worthless. Can anyone point me to a concise get-me-started guide to terminal services/remote desktop services? If I can just get aimed in the right direction I can probably figure it out myself. Thanks.

• Apache httpd.conf handle multiple domains to run the same application

  So what we are looking for is the ability to do the following: We have an application that can load certain settings based on the domain that it is being accessed from. So if you come from xyz.com we show a different logo and if you come from abc.com we show a different logo. The code is the same, running from same server just detects the domain on the run Now we want to get a dedicated server (any suggestions?) that will enable us to point all the doamins that we want to this server (we change the DNS for the domains to that of our server) and then when the user goes to a certain domain they run the same application. Now as far as I can understand we will need to create a "VirtualHost" in apache to handle this. Can we create a wildcard virtualhost that catches all the domains? I am not an expert with Apache at all. So please forgive if this comes out to be a silly question. Any detailed help would be great. Thanks

• Learning advanced java skills

  I've been programming in java for a while and I really like the language, I've mostly just done game programming, but I want to get a feel for some of the more commonly used api's and frameworks and just get a generally more well-rounded grasp of the language and the common libraries in the current job market. From what I found things like spring, hibernate, and GWT are pretty in demand right now. I looked at some tutorials online and they weren't hard to follow but I really felt like I had no context for what I was learning - I had no idea how any of it would be use in a real work environment. I know nothing can rival the benefit I'd get from actual work experience but that's not an option for me right now, I need another way to learn these technologies in a way where I'll at least feel comfortable working with them and know what I'm doing beyond just understanding what code does what. I checked out a few books but they were all really old(like pre-2006, am I right to assume those books would be kind of out of date today?) or required experience with libraries that I didn't have and can't get. I hate getting stuck looking for the best resource to learn something instead of spending my time actually learning. All I really want is someone to point me to a resource(website or ebook) that is aimed at already experienced java developers and will not only teach me some interesting useful java technology(anything that is useful, I dont know much outside of graphics libraries and game related things so I was thinking some database or web programming api's) but also give me a good perspective of it and leave me feeling confident that I could actually use what I learned on a practical application. If my post makes you think I'm not yet experienced to be learning these things, which I doubted earlier today but am now starting to question, then what do you think is the next step for me? I just want to get better at java. Thanks everyone

• Driver to split audio to 2 different devices?

  I recently bought one of these USB headsets against my own better judgement, and it's really costing my sanity at this point. Previously when using a standard jack, I just used a splitter so I could split off the things I was doing with my TV or headset, I could just turn the TV off or the headset volume down should I want to use one at a time. Now, along comes this USB headset and I find that I can't choose for the sound of 1 application to pipe to 2 different devices on Windows; How can I solve this? Does any software out there exist for this purpose?

• Fibonacci numbers in F#

  As you may have gathered from some of my previous posts, I've been spending some quality time at Project Euler.  Normally I do my solutions in C#, but since I have also started learning F#, it only made sense to switch over to F# to get my math coding fix. This week's post is just a small snippet - spefically, a simple function to return a fibonacci number given it's place in the sequence.  One popular example uses recursion: let rec fib n = if n < 2 then 1 else fib (n-2) + fib(n-1) While this is certainly elegant, the recursion is absolutely brutal on performance.  So I decided to spend a little time, and find an option that achieved the same functionality, but used a recursive function.  And since this is F#, I wanted to make sure I did it without the use of any mutable variables. Here's the solution I came up with: let rec fib n1 n2 c =    if c = 1 then        n2    else        fib n2 (n1+n2) (c-1);;let GetFib num =    (fib 1 1 num);;printfn "%A" (GetFib 1000);; Essentially, this function works through the sequence moving forward, passing the two most recent numbers and a counter to the recursive calls until it has achieved the desired number of iterations.  At that point, it returns the latest fibonacci number. Enjoy!

• ADSL connetion (BSNL dataone) with puppy Linux

  I have an old PC which I want to use for internet browsing. I tried using Puppy Linux (version 4.3.1) for the same but have not been able to connect. I connect via PPPoE. My network card is RTL 8029b which is automatically detected by Puppy Linux. However, the LED indicator on the MODEM designating LAN connectivity stays off. This post is being typed from the same PC running XP, so there are no connection issues. I am a complete newbie for Linux. can somebody point me to instructions. I will be willing to give any more information if required. P.S. My MODEM is Huewei Smartax MT 882 Thanks

• Ambiguous in the namespace problem

  From the last few days, I was ignoring an error that keep coming at the compile time. I spent some two hours on it before but didn’t get it work. The error is quit confusing and of course difficult to manage. 'ApplicationSettingsBase' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Configuration' 'MailMessage' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Net.Mail' And there are couple of other similar errors that is pointing to some ambiguous references in my project.  The confusing part is that the MailMessage object throws similar error when you are importing the old and new email namespace. For example, Imports System.Web.Mail Imports System.Net.Mail So if you are only encountering ambiguous problem in MailMessage object. It is more possible that you have define both the namespaces in your code behind which is actually confusing the compiler about your referencing object. The quick solve for this problem is that remove Imports System.Web.Mail and it should work smooth. But with me, I never used the old asp.net mail namespace in my project. Then I start looking at my references and luckily I found the problem there. Follow the steps below to investigate the issue 1. Go to your project 2. Then references 3. Right click on “System” and see properties. it should point to the following path x:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\System.dll Where x is name of your operating system directory. This was the problem with my project. I had my operating system install on “D” drive and some how it is pointing to “C” drive which is the root cause of this problem. After that I verify all my references and found 5 –6 assemblies that are pointing to wrong path and get it worked. Also note, the problem can occur in any type of project either it is website , web application etc.

• I think I have multiple postgresql servers installed, how do I identify and delete the 'extra' ones?

  I seem to have a few installations of postgresql on my machine somehow. I'm not sure if this is a mistake or, if Ubuntu for some odd reason duplicates direcotories and keeps them elsewhere. I have a postgresql directory in /etc one in /usr/lib and one in /opt I'm properly confused at this point. How do I go about deleting the extra ones.which ones are he extra one? I also need to make sure that my 'pg' gem in my rails env is pointing towards the correct posgresql db server. Any thoughts on my issue would be huge.

• Asp.net Session State Revisited

  Every now and then I see doubts and queries which I believe is the most discussed topic in the .net environment - Asp.net Sessions. So what really are they, why are they needed and what does browser and .net do with it. These and some of the other questions I hope to answer with this post. Because of the stateless nature of the HTTP protocol there is always a need of state management in a web application. There are many other ways to store data but I feel Session state is amongst the most powerful one. The ASP.NET session state is a technology that lets you store server-side, user-specific data. Our web applications can then use data to process request from the user for which the session state was instantiated. So when does a session is first created? When we start a asp.net application a non-expiring cookie is created and its called as ASP.NET_SessionId. Basically there are two methods for this depending upon how you configure this setting in your config file. The session ID can be a part of cookie as discussed above(called as ASP.NET_SessionId) or it is embedded in the browser’s URL. For the latter part we have to set cookie-less session in our web.config file. These Session ID’s are 120-bit random number that is represented by 20-character string. The cookie will be alive until you close your browser. If you browse from one app to another within the same domain, then both the apps will use the same session ID to track the session state. Why reuse? so that you don’t have to create a new session ID for each request. One can abandon one particular Session by calling Session.Abandon() which will stop the page processing and clear out the session data. A subsequent page request causes a brand new session object to be instantiated. So what happened to my cookie? Well the session cookie is still there even when one Session.Abandon() is called and another session object is created. The Session.Abandon() lets you clear out your session state without waiting for session timeout. By default, this time-out is a 20-minute sliding expiration. This expiration is refreshed every time that the user makes a request to the Web site and presents the session ID cookie. The Abandon method sets a flag in the session state object that indicates that the session state should be abandoned. If your app does not have global.asax then your session cookie will be killed at the end of each page request. So you need to have a global.asax file and Session_Start() handler to make sure that the session cookie will remain intact once its issued after the first page hit. The runtime invokes global.asax’s Session_OnEnd() when you call Session.Abandon() or the session times out. The session manager stores session data in HttpCache with sliding expiration where this timeout can be configured in the <sessionState> of web.config file. When the timeout is up the HttpCache will remove the session state object. Sometimes we want particular pages not to time out as compared to other pages in our applications. We can handle this in two ways. First, we can set a timer or may be a JavaScript function that refreshes the page after fixed intervals of time. The only thing being the page being cached locally and then the request is not made to the server so to prevent that you can add this to your page: <%@ OutputCache Location="None" VaryByParam="None" %> Second approach is to move your page into its own folder and then add a web.config to that folder to control the timeout. Also not all pages in your application will need access to session state. For those pages that do not, you can indicate that session state is not needed and prevent session data from being fetched from the store in requests to these pages. • DFS keeps constantly replicating almost all files

  We have always had problems with DFS, but recently it has gotten worse (with no apparent reason) to the point it's becoming harmful. We have one master server and DFS connections to other four servers. The four severs don't modify any files, so all replications always propagate from the master to the four other servers. The replicated directory has about 900,000 files. In the recent weeks, every time we check DFS, the DSF backlogs have hundredths of thousand of files. For instance now, the master server now replicates about 700,000 to three of the four servers while the fourth one is fine. Sometimes, only one is off, sometimes two and this time three. Also, it is never the same set of servers. It is inconceivable that something periodically touches all 900,000 files. The biggest change which happens is a scheduled update of several thousand files every six hours. Does anybody have the same problem? Is it a known issue?

• Macbook pro asks me to "Service Battery"

  A couple of weeks ago I checked the battery and at that point in time (after 160 load cycles) it still had a capacity of 5000 mAh. Today, my 2006 macbook pro tells me via the battery menu to "Service Battery". According to Coconut Battery the current capacity is only 1590 mAh. The corresponding help text suggests contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to have the computer checked. Before I decide to throw money at the AASP I'd like to understand what the AASP could possibly do to eliminate the problem. Isn't it more likely that the battery simply broke at 160 cycles and needs to be replaced? Are there any means by software or firmware to influence battery behavior? Of course, the computer hardware might be broken but how could this result in the described effect? And yes, I'm currently trying a calibration cycle but I have some doubts that it will save the day.

• VPN Split Tunneling - Pros and Cons and how to achieve?

  Well this is the dilemma, I want remote clients to connect to my network and only route local access through the VPN. This is split tunneling, the client uses its internet connection for all other internet requests and the VPN tunnel to my network for local requests. There's a couple of issues that arise: split tunneling in Windows is achieved by unticking an option which reads "Use default gateway on remote network" in the TCP/IP settings of the client VPN connection. At any point the user can tick it and route all his internet traffic through my network eating away at my bandwidth and being cloaked by my IP address. This is unacceptable. Issue number 2 is that if the client is split tunneling, he becomes a gateway between the internet and my network, this is also unacceptable. My questions are: how does one achieve split tunneling serverside? And is the latter issue a valid con worthy of worry? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

• What could be causing Windows to randomnly reset the system time to a random time?

  My Windows 7 machine infuriates me. It cannot hold a date. At one point it all worked fine, but now it will decide that it needs to change the system time to a random time and date either in the future or past. There seems to be no correlation or set interval of when it happens. To remedy it I have: Correctly set the time in bios. Replaced the motherboard battery with a new CR2032 (even checked it with a multimeter). Tried disabling automatic internet synchronizing via "Date and Time" dialog. Stopped, restarted, left disabled the Windows Time service. Yet with all of these actions, the time will continue to change. Any ideas?

• SBS 2003 no network connection and acting strangely a bunch of Event ID 13568

  I've got an SBS 2003 Standard server and it was running fine until earlier today when it was rebooted, after the reboot it has no network connection, I can't seem to right click on a lot of stuff and get dialog boxes, I can't launch IE, it's acting extremely strange. We are dead in the water at this point. I checked the event logs and noticed we're getting a ton of Event ID's 13568. I thought it was a Journal Wrap error, and while I was going to try to fix it using this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762 I can't even do that because after I set the D4 value, then went to restart NTFRS from command prompt and I got the following: System Error 1059 has occurred. Circular service dependency was specified. That is where I'm at and haven't been able to figure anything else out. • Is it possible to rent an IP address to mask the server real IP address?

  A customer would like to lease an IP address and point it to a dedicated web server with the intention of "masking" the server's IP address so it would be difficult to tell where the site is hosted. Can they rent an IP address from a 3rd party in order to hide the server's IP address?   I come from a windows background and i am proficient with the .net platform. For work, i need to bring up a custom embedded system platform. We have bought the pandaboard ES as the test platform. The application is to stream images over the wifi. If you think about it, we are building something similar to a netgear router - the only difference being when you log into the device it serves images. Because my background is in windows i am not quite sure how to start off with embedded linux development. in reading through various sites i have come to the conclusion that going to linux as development host is the best option. Can some one point to me in the right direction regarding the set up. I have a windows machine that will be used for development purposes. I can either do a virtual box or setup a partition for linux. But the finer details are what throwing me off..what i need to know is 1) once i install linux what other software do I need - Code blocks, 2) what about toolchain 3) How to debug - through serial port ? 4) Is there a way to send the image built directly to the CF card? • Socksify TCP connections reaching a gateway IP -- preferably without iptables

  I have Virtualbox installed on Debian with a few virtual machines. I can't install anything in the guests, and I use host only networking, vboxnet0. The host IP in the host network is 192.168.56.1, and the guests have static IPs in 192.168.56.0/24. I access Internet with a SOCKS proxy (without authentication) and I would like the Virtualbox guests TCP connections to be sent through the SOCKS proxy. This would also be useful for socksifying external TCP reaching a gateway network card or wireless access point. I looked at transocks, tun2socks, with dante-client, etc., but I don't know how can I achieve this without enabling IP forwarding in the host and using iptables. Maybe to attach somehow the Virtualbox vboxnet0 network to the tunnel tun0 used by tun2socks? Or maybe there is a way to do NAT to tun0 in Virtualbox? I only need TCP traffic and I don't need UDP, not even for DNS.

• Port forwarding no longer works

  Prior to testing an OpenVPN installation, I setup a basic VPN server using the software already built into Windows 7. Port forwarding on the Linksys router worked as normal and I was able to connect remotely. After doing an install of OpenVPN Access Server on a spare box running Ubuntu, and adding new ports to be forwarded I was unable to access the VPN from an external source as the required ports all indicated that they were closed. (During testing XRDP and VNCSERVER were also installed to facilitate access to the box) Checking back on the Windows 7 VPN resulted in no access to that vpn setup either. All ports are now reporting a being closed despite being previously open even ports that were being used for other services. Adding and removing port forwarding rules seem to have no effect. At this point, in order to troubleshoot, both the firewall and anti-virus software have been disabled on the Windows 7 machine. Could this be just a router issue? Is there any way out of this without having to reset and reconfigure the router?

• SFTP is not connecting to remote server

OpenSSH_5.2p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8r 8 Feb 2011 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to Remote_IP [Remote_IP] port 22. debug1: connect to address Remote_IP port 22: Operation timed out ssh: connect to host Remote_IP port 22: Operation timed out Connection closed I set up an account for SFTP only access with a chroot. I tested that on the server and it works fine. The problem is, I could not get remote SFTP access to the server to work right. The example above is what I keep on running into. I have been trying to figure out how to solve this problem for 2 days now. I am not sure if it have to do with /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Is it something that I am not aware of? I am hoping that you could help point me to the right place for this issue.

  Hi! I am using Windows 7 64-bit 7600, with 4Gb of RAM. I have a serious problem, since something uses a lot of RAM(3.94Gb) and I see "stairs" in taskmanager, it rises to +3Gb RAM and it drops to about 2Gb and then rises slowly again, and suddenly drops. I tryed installing this version again and other versions, newer ones, but no effect. Ive even tryed disconnecting other harddrives while I installed it, and then installed NOD32 and updated it. How could I know what is using that much RAM? P.S.: I was suspecting superfetch service, I disabled it, restarted pc, and it didnt work, since the memory is the highest point when I login with password, it is really annoying since I need about 1minute to see my desktop, neither alone try anything else. After loging in it slowly drops and after random time it starts rising again. That doesnt happen immediately after a fresh windows install. And how the drivers go, I tryed older drivers for GPU, and newest ones.

• How do I debug this FS error on a flash device?

  I have console access to an embedded linux device. This device has flash memory part of which is partitioned as a FAT filesystem. Its running linux-2.6.31. • Is there any way to make Mac OS X Spotlight only index the file names and not the contents?

  I do understand that the point of Spotlight is to look inside files, but it also returns file name matches, and that's what I need most of the time. Besides, Spotlight is running so absurdly slow on my system (Snow Leopard on the iMac '08), it's just unusable. I downloaded Canary and Spotlight wasn't able to find the app file for 15 minutes. It was already in the download stack, but as far as Spotlight goes, the file doesn't exist. Hence, I would like to know of a way to make Spotlight only index the file names, which would perhaps make it a bit faster. I'm looking at mimicking the behaviour of Windows applications such as AvaFind or Search Everything Edit: Let me highlight the fact that I am looking for an AvaFind or Search Everything replacement for Mac OS X. Go try one of these on a Windows machine and you'll understand my disappointment with Spotlight or any other popular search tools in OS X.

  There is a new update for jtreg 4.1, b04, available. The primary changes have been to support faster and more reliable test runs, especially for tests in the jdk/ repository. [ For users inside Oracle, there is preliminary direct support for gathering code coverage data using jcov while running tests, and for generating a coverage report when all the tests have been run. ] -- jtreg can be downloaded from the OpenJDK jtreg page: http://openjdk.java.net/jtreg/. Scratch directories On platforms like Windows, if a test leaves a file open when the test is over, that can cause a problem for downstream tests, because the scratch directory cannot be emptied beforehand. This is addressed in agentvm mode by discarding any agents using that scratch directory and starting new agents using a new empty scratch directory. Successive directives use suffices _1, _2, etc. If you see such directories appearing in the work directory, that is an indication that files were left open in the preceding directory in the series. Locking support Some tests use shared system resources such as fixed port numbers. This causes a problem when running tests concurrently. So, you can now mark a directory such that all the tests within all such directories will be run sequentially, even if you use -concurrency:N on the command line to run the rest of the tests in parallel. This is seen as a short term solution: it is recommended that tests not use shared system resources whenever possible. If you are running multiple instances of jtreg on the same machine at the same time, you can use a new option -lock:file to specify a file to be used for file locking; otherwise, the locking will just be within the JVM used to run jtreg. "autovm mode" By default, if no options to the contrary are given on the command line, tests will be run in othervm mode. Now, a test suite can be marked so that the default execution mode is "agentvm" mode. In conjunction with this, you can now mark a directory such that all the tests within that directory will be run in "othervm" mode. Conceptually, this is equivalent to putting /othervm on every appropriate action on every test in that directory and any subdirectories. This is seen as a short term solution: it is recommended tests be adapted to use agentvm mode, or use "@run main/othervm" explicitly. Info in test result files The user name and jtreg version info are now stored in the properties near the beginning of the .jtr file. Build The makefiles used to build and test jtreg have been reorganized and simplified. jtreg is now using JT Harness version 4.4. Other jtreg provides access to GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID when set. jtreg ensures that shell tests are given an absolute path for the JDK under test. jtreg now honors the "first sentence rule" for the description given by @summary. jtreg saves the default locale before executing a test in samevm or agentvm mode, and restores it afterwards. Bug fixes jtreg tried to execute a test even if the compilation failed in agentvm mode because of a JVM crash. jtreg did not correctly handle the -compilejdk option.
