• MySQL on Windows - how do I set the wait_timeout for connections using named pipes?

  I use a MySQL database running on a Windows box, and for performance reasons I'm connecting to it using named pipes. The (Java) application using the database (through Hibernate) can let the connection lie idle for quite a long time, which causes the connection to fail with the following message: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was 33 558 297 milliseconds ago. The last packet sent successfully to the server was 33 558 297 milliseconds ago. is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. autoReconnect unfortunately has no effect (and neither does autoReconnectForPools), but the wait_timeout docs state that wait_timeout only applies "to TCP/IP and Unix socket file connections, not to connections made via named pipes, or shared memory". How can I change the wait_timeout for named pipes?

• Having issues using fdisk and GParted with Lexar 64GB USB, but reading and writing is fine

  I have recently bought a new 64GB Lexar USB with the long model name of LJDV10-64G-000-106, and I am having issues partitioning it. I am able to mount, read and write to the USB without any issues but whenever I try to partition it with GParted it doesn't show up in the dropdown. Also while using the command sudo fdisk -l I receive the error fdisk: unable to seek on /dev/sdc: Invalid argument. This is a brand new USB so I am not sure why I am having these issues, especially since the device is functioning perfectly with read/write. I have tried reformatting it on a windows machine but that does not seem to do anything. For those who want a visual my USB looks almost exactly like But 64GB rather than 8GB Edit: I have just ran GParted from the terminal and I am getting a similar error, but it may give more information on the issue. Could not determine physical sector size for /dev/sdc. Using the logical sector size (512). Invalid argument during seek for read on /dev/sdc Also clearing my USB with /dev/zero fails with the the message $ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc bs=1M dd: writing `/dev/sdc': No space left on device 1+0 records in 0+0 records out 0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.00167254 s, 0.0 kB/s

• Re-deploy only the reports on SCOM Management Packs

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found. • Radeon HD 5770 - DisplayPort Problem

  I am trying to set up 3 monitors with the Radeon HD 5770 I recieved a few days ago. I have read that I can use 2 DVI ports and an active DisplayPort adapter for a third DVI monitor. I have purchased this adapter: http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/dp_dvid.htm I have the two normal DVI monitors working, but when I try to extend the display to the third, I get a message saying the system has detected a problem with the connection through the display port which may limit resolution/refresh rate. I know that all the cables are fine, I have replaced the adapter, the monitors all work, I have tried different monitors through the adapter, and even nothing but the adapter, but I cannot get any monitor to work using it. I am trying to use 2 Dell monitors and an Acer. Have I overlooked something? Is there a compatibiliy issue I missed? Any suggestions as to what I could try? Thanks in advance.

  Last night I upgraded to Office 2010 RTM from MSDN. I'm now trying to uninstall the Office Live Add-in that I used with Office 2007 as this functionality is built in to Office 2010. When I run the uninstall from control panel I get the following message: Microsoft Office Live Add-in cannot be installed because you do not have the right version of Microsoft Office installed on your computer Google has pointed to 2 solutions, both of which are pretty useless: Use the MS Windows Installer Cleanup - this is not good because all it does is remove the Installer entry from the registry, leaving all the installed files behind Uninstall Office 2010, uninstall Add-in, reinstall Office 2010 - that is just ridiculous, but typical MS response So, can I get this off my system without resorting to option 2?

• mutt, smime, decrypt with one of two different keys

  This is an odd one. We want to have an encrypted e-mail list. There are a few ways to do this, but in the interim what we've done is created a public/private keypair via openssl for our e-mail list ([email protected]) and then distributed the public/private keypair amongst the list participants (ugh). When someone posts to the list, they encrypt using the lists public key, and everyone has the private key (ugh) so it 'works'. MUAs like Outlook and Thunderbird work with this setup. Mutt has a problem though - it seems to only decrypt a SMIME message with a private key that is specified by your e-mail. So when someone sends an e-mail to the list e-mail, my MUA won't decrypt it. How can I tell Mutt about this second private key?

• Installing Sharepoint 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2

  we are using in our lab a clean installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 which is running as Hyper-V instance. Today we wanted to install a clean installation of Sharepoint 2007 with SP1 on this machine and we explorer an error that we are not able to install it. The setup is comes up with an error which is described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962935 but this is not our szenario. Nobody is going be happy with this solution and I hope we find a fast way how customers can install Sharepoint direclty on 2008 R2. • Do I need to uninstall lxde before installing kde-standard?

  I have ubuntu 12.04 (upgraded from 10.04) and since I disliked the default desktop, I installed lxde (sudo apt-get install lxde). This was good except that occasionally there would be trouble with Firefox (blinking on panel) so that finally I had to close it and then a error message from Ubuntu was issued. I had asked about it before but there was no useful response so now I want to move to another desktop which will hopefully not create the problem I have now. My doubt is, should I first uninstall lxde and then install kde (sudo apt-get install kde-standard) or is it enough to install kde without uninstalling lxde? In case it is necessary to uninstall, should I use the command sudo apt-get remove lxde or is there a better command for it? You may also help me with choice of desktop. I installed lxde since this is simple and lightweight. I am assuming that kde will not be as simple but hopefully not create problem like above. But I hate if it takes too long to log in or to launch a program like Firefox etc and also there should not be icons fixed on the left part of terminal (I hate to keep icons on desktop since these are distracting). Some of these issues were present with default Ubuntu 12.04. So is my choice of kde-standard appropriate or are there better desktop alternatives?

  I am sharing a class I use for both my Windows Phone 8 and Windows Store app projects. Background and my requirements For my Windows Phone 7 projects two years ago I wrote an improved custom MessageBox class that preserves the well-known MessageBox interface while offering several advantages. I documented those and shared it for Windows Phone 7 here: Guide.BeginShowMessageBox wrapper. Aside: With Windows Phone 8 we can now use the async/await feature out of the box without taking a dependency on additional/separate pre-release software. As I try to share code between my existing Windows Phone 8 projects and my new Windows Store app projects, I wanted to preserve the calling code, so I decided to wrap the WinRT MessageDialog class in a custom class to present the same MessageBox interface to my codebase. BUT. The MessageDialog class has to be called with the await keyword preceding it (which as we know is viral) which means all my calling code will also have to use await. Which in turn means that I have to change my MessageBox wrapper to present the same interface to the shared codebase and be callable with await… for both Windows Phone projects and Windows Store app projects. Solution The solution is what the requirements above outlined: a single code file with a MessageBox class that you can drop in your project, regardless of whether it targets Windows Phone 8, or Windows 8 Store apps or both. • Inconsistent booting problem 12.04LTS on Asus U46E RAL7

  The laptop is dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 11.10. For 11.10 to boot, I had to add 'nolapic' in GRUB boot options. I downloaded 12.04LTS LiveCD yesterday and made a CD and a bootable USB stick. With both USB and LiveCD, occasionally I can boot into 12.04. But many times, the boot process stuck at some point. For USB boot, sometime it works. But other times, it seems to stuck right after seeing the message: NMI watchdog enabled. takes one hw-pmu counted [0.408590] #2 The number in [] changes. Some times it stuck at #2, and sometimes at #3. For LiveCD boot, sometime it works. But when it stuck, it stuck at different places. At times, the boot process go directly to a blank screen with a blink '_' at up left corner. Sometime it went a bit further, after showing options to try/install ubuntu then stuck with a blank screen with blink '_'. Anything I can do to get around of this?

• Displaying Exceptions Thrown or Caught in Managed Beans

  Just came a cross a sample written by Steve Muench, which somewhere deep in its implementation details uses the following code to route exceptions to the ADF binding layer to be handled by the ADF model error handler (which can be customized by overriding the DCErrorHandlerImpl class and configuring the custom class in DataBindings.cpx file) To route an exception to the ADFm error handler, Steve used the following code ((DCBindingContainer)BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry()).reportException(ex); The same code however can be used in managed beans as well to enforce consistent error handling in ADF. As an example, lets assume a managed bean method hits an exception. To simulate this, let's use the following code: public void onToolBarButtonAction(ActionEvent actionEvent) {    throw new JboException("Just to tease you !!!!!");        } The exception shows at runtime as displayed in the following image: Assuming a try-catch block is used to intercept the exception caused by a managed bean action, you can route the error message display to the ADF model error handler. Again, let's simulate the code that would need to go into a try-catch block public void onToolBarButtonAction(ActionEvent actionEvent) {    JboException ex = new JboException("Just to tease you !!!!!");  BindingContext bctx = BindingContext.getCurrent();    ((DCBindingContainer)bctx.getCurrentBindingsEntry()).reportException(ex); } The error now displays as shown in the image below As you can see, the error is now handled by the ADFm Error handler, which - as mentioned before - could be a custom error handler. Using the ADF model error handling for displaying exceptions thrown in managed beans require the current ADF Faces page to have an associated PageDef file (which is the case if the page or view contains ADF bound components). Note that to invoke methods exposed on the business service it is recommended to always work through the binding layer (method binding) so that in case of an error the ADF model error handler is automatically used.

• Problems installing Ubuntu on a vaio with SSD, GRUB installation failure

  I have installed and used Ubuntu in several computers. But now I have a problem that I don't know how to solve. I have a Vaio (Product name: vpcz13c5e), it has a SSD 128gb. I decided to install Ubuntu (12.04, but I have tried older versions as well). Firstly, I tested with live USB, and everything was fine, so I decided go for the complete installation. Then everything went as follows: I chose to use the whole disk (first option, formatting everything). I got a message Executing 'grub-install' /deb/sdb failed. This is a fatal error After clicking ok I got another window with 3 options: the first offers different devices to install the bootloader on (I tried all of them and none works). Second option: Continue without a bootloader. In that case I got You will need to manually install a bootloader in order to start Ubuntu The third option is Cancel the installation. So, I chose Continue without a bootloader. Then I restart the computer (with the Live cd) and in a terminal type sudo fdisk -l but I obtain fdisk: unable to seek on /dev/sda: Invalid argument What can I do? any help will be appreciated.

• Reverse proxy 502 bad gateway

  I have setup a subdomain to proxy my plesk panel, but when saving pages I am getting 502 Bad Gateway error instead of a completion message. I am running CentOS 6. Here is my vhost.conf configuration for http://plesk.domain.tld/: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^80$ RewriteRule $ https://plesk.domain.tld/ [R,L] Here is my vhost_ssl.conf configuration for https://plesk.domain.tld/: SSLProxyEngine On <Location /> ProxyPass https://localhost:8443/ ProxyPassReverse https://localhost:8443/ </Location> I have more than enough (and I have even checked) RAM, CPU and HDD. There are no spikes. As well, the posted information does save, it just errors when trying to show me a "This information has been saved." green/red block. • cannot mount root filesystem on 10.04

  I tried to apply the recommendation of question: Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) After running that command: sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev I get this error message: mount: mount point /mnt/dev does not exist fdisk -l returns /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda5 do I need to mount sda2 and sda5? Edited after @psusi's comment: /dev/sda1 is the boot file system It seems that I need to mount sda2 or sda5. • Dell Inspiron/Windows Vista sleep/hibernate issue

  When I hit the sleep button in Windows the computer looks like it's going into Sleep mode but a few seconds later it's restarted, and stops with this error message: internal hard disk drive not found To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics. The computer is running Windows Vista (SP2) and I have installed all available Windows Updates and the latest manufacturer drivers. I have already tried to reseated the drive, ran the onboard diagnostics and there were no errors. I have changed the power settings for all devices where it's available so that they are not allowed to wake up the computer. Any ideas?

• How do you manage Labeled and All-Mail unread mails in Thunderbird with a GMail IMAP accounnt?

  I use Thunderbird with gmail via imap and do so with multiple accounts. On the gmail side I have filters that will automatically assign labels to incoming mail and archive it moving it out of the inbox. On the Thunderbird side it will see the new mail appear in the corresponding folder and the all mail folder -- that's fine but my problem is that they're both marked as unread. Since I have many accounts I use the unread mail view in Thunderbird's folder panel and what I see is both folders highlighted as unread. When I read the message in one folder the other only get marked as read I click on it and Thunderbird does another imap transaction. Is there a configuration that will recognize the same mail in two different folders automatically?

• Designing Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). • How to find the /dev name of my USB device

  I am running Ubuntu 11 on VmWare on Windows XP. I want to format an SD card in Ubuntu. But, I can't figure out which /dev/xxx device the SD card is. I plug the card into the built-in socket of my laptop. I "safely remove" the device in Windows. Then, I "connect" the PCMCIA reader in VmWare. Now, I was supposing to see a new device like /dev/sdx. But, it doesn't appear :( How can I find what the name of my USB device's name and mount it? /var/log/message is empty. • Kickstart installation: Unable to read package metadata.

  I'm trying to install a CentOS OS with kickstart using HTTP as the installation source. The kickstart server and the installed server are both running on VMs on the same machine. after the anaconda system installer starts it fails with the following message: I tried installing two different versions of Centos(5.5 and 5.2), and they both pass a CDROM media test the manual installation provides.   I installed xampp back around January 2009, and CF8 to test coldfusion on my macbook (note: I do not think that this issue is related to CF, but only xampp). I only ever used the apache part of xampp, and this was working for over a year. In the last couple of months at the most I've started getting the following error message (even for none CF sites, and non .cfm pages, the error occurs for .html files..): Access forbidden!   I have Windows 7 64bit as my OS + SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. I can connect to SQL Databases (2008), but cannot connect to a SQL 2005 database. I can, however, connect to the 2005 SQL Database on a PC that has Windows XP as the OS and also has SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. So it seems that it works fine on XP but not on Windows 7 (32 or 64bit). is this an Operating System issue? • What packages are neccessary to have sound output from java applets?

  I've got a very minimalistic setup of ubuntu precise, created using debootstrap. So please don't assume that any packages are installed just because they usually are. On that system, I'd like to play some sounds from a java applet. As far as I can tell, the alsa kernel modules are loaded, including snd_hda_intel, snd_pcm, snd_seq_midi among others. I've also included the alsa-base and alsa-utils packages in my installation. alsa-mixer looks good, using “HDA Intel PCH” as its default device. What other packages, configuration settings or daemon startups does java require to make its sound output work?

  In my spreadsheet I am collecting time periods when certain values have been changed. The user is restricted to 4 time periods. I would like to show the data based on thos time periods. I've included a mock up' of the data and the type of graph I would like to create.
