Is the javaScript not part of the DOM?

Why is it that scripts can still function even after the code used to create them is removed from the DOM? I ran into a situation where I wanted to prevent a broken script from running (@see my post). In my attempt to come up with a solution I wrote an extension with the following line (just to see what would happen). //doc is passed here because this script is running as a firefox extension outside //of the document context. $('script', doc).remove(); I assumed that this would remove all the scripts from the DOM, which it did, and that therefore no scripts would run on the page, which is not the case. I would love to know more about what's behind this behavior.

fullCalendar not rendering new events dynamically

I have the following code in a page on which I am using fullCalendar. I am able to add events in my page, however the calendar does not display this dynamically. I have to move to another month (and then back to the current month), before the dates I added are displayed. Is there a way to dynamically refresh/render the calendar as dates are programatically added to it? Web-based JSON editor that works like property explorer with AJAXy input form

Background: This is a request for something that may not exist yet, but I've been meaning to build one for a long time. First I will ask if anyone has seen anything like it yet. Suppose you have an arbitrary JSON structure like the following: { 'str_title':'My Employee List' ,'str_lastmod': '2009-June-15' ,'arr_list':[ {'firstname':'john','lastname':'doe','age':'33',} ,{'firstname':'jane','lastname':'doe','age':'34',} ,{'firstname':'samuel','lastname':'doe','age':'35',} ] } Question: Is there a web-based JSON editor that could take a structure like this, and automatically allow the user to modify this in a user-friendly GUI? Example: Imagine an auto-generated HTML form that displays 2 input-type-text controls for both title and lastmod, and a table of input-type-text controls with three columns and three rows for arr_list ... with the ability to delete or add additional rows by clicking on a [+][X] next to each row in the table. Big Idea: The "big idea" behind this is that the user would be able to specify any arbitrary (non-recursive) JSON structure and then also be able to edit the structure with a GUI-based interaction (this would be similar to the "XML Editor Grid View" in XML Spy).

I have this fantastic little plugin working but I need to require that at least one name be selected. I normally use jquery.validate. However, the validation plugin does not appear to work on a field using the tokeninput. Does anyone have an answer? Javascript Rich Display WYSIWYG Component/Methodology

quick back story-- I am working on ASP.Net based template editor that lets authors create text templates using Javascript inserted placeholder tags that will be filled in with dynamic text when the templates are used to display the final results. For example the author might create a template like The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. The application would eventually replace the tag with a dynamic word down the road (though it's not specifically relevant to this post) The word foo was generated dynmamically. Depending on the circumstances, the template may be created in a text input, textarea or a modified version of the Ajax Control Toolkit HTML Editor. There might be 40 or more of these editable elements on the page, so using lots of stripped down or modified HTML editors would probably bog the page down too much. The problem is that the tags such as [%12#add] are displayed inline with the user text and the result is confusing and aesthetically gross. The goal is parse the contens of the source element and when a tags such as [%12#add] are encountered, display something prettier and less cryptic to the user such as a stylable element or image wherever tags such as [%12#add] occur. The application still needs the template text with the tags on postback. So the user might see The word tag placeholder was generated dynamically. but the original template would still be the value of the text input box The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. It seems HTML editors like the ACT version and FckEditor accomplish this by rendering their output in an IFrame, but rather than kill myself trying to roll a lighter specialized version myself, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of an existing free component or approach that has already tackled this. With good reason, I don't think S.O. allows HTML formatting, but the bold "tag placeholder" above would ideally be something like tag placeholder.

Combining javascripts into a single file

Having read up recently on yahoo's web optimisation tips and using YSlow I've implemented a few of their ideas on one of my sites http://www.gwynfryncottages.com you can see the file here http://www.gwynfryncottages.com/js/gw-custom.js. While this technique seems to work perfectly on most occasions, and really does speed up the site, I do notice a significantly higher number of errors where the javascripts don't load or don't load completely while I'm working on the site so three questions:- is combining scripts this way a good idea at all in terms of reliablity? is there any way to measure the number of errors? is there any way to 'pre-load' the javascript or ensure that the number of loading errors is reduced?

Want to set 'src' of script to my IP-Won't load in Safari or Chrome. Relative link asp.netmvc

I have a script that links to the server I am hosting (IP can change) usually I would just use for links: var url ='http://' + window.location.hostname + 'end of url'; But in this case it isnt appearing to be so easy. I have tried: (1) $('#scriptid').attr('src', url); as well as: (2) var script = document.createElement( 'script' ); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = url; $("#insert").append( script ); Now case (2) works loads the script runs the script. But when at the end of my script it hits the 'write data' it decides to replace the entire page with just the data. Any idea on how I can do this? Note: I am using plain html not ASP. With ASP backend that is just the way it has to be. Ok it now is <script src="myscript.js"></script> C# router.AddAsyncRoute("myscript.js"...... It workes in IE & FF. But I get blank pages in Chrome & Safari. I am using document.write to write a script onto my page. Any ideas why Chrome & Safari don't like this? I am so far assuming that in Crhome & Safari it takes longer to run the script therefore launching the document.write after the DOM has loaded therefore replacing the page with a blank one. edit the script im trying to run is a modification of: d = new dTree('d'); d.add(0,-1,'My example tree'); d.add(1,0,'Node 1','default.html'); d.add(2,0,'Node 2','default.html'); d.add(3,1,'Node 1.1','default.html'); d.add(4,0,'Node 3','default.html'); d.add(5,3,'Node 1.1.1','default.html') document.write(d); Any ideas how I can get around this? Web Application Loading Screen

I have a web app that has several tree views. When the page loads i see the unordered lists and after a small latency the styling of the tree is rendered into the DOM. Is there a way to mask the webapp, and have a spinner in the middle of the screen, and when everything on the page is fully rendered the spinner goes away and the mask fades out? Kind of like a semi transparent mask that you would see on a lightbox pop-up dialog.

How do I target a div without a class or id but with all these specific style-attributes

I'm restyling a certain page where I don't have access to all the source-HTML. So I'm left over with some hard to target elements within a page I need removed. For example the page is swamped with <div style="float: left; width: 10.25px; height: 284px;"></div>. To get rid of them I tried this in CSS: div[style="float: left; width: 10.25px; height: 284px;"] { display:none !important; } I'd like to fix this using CSS, because the the HTML that needs to be removed is updated using ajax. How do I target a div without a class or id but with all these specific style-attributes? how to prevent checkbox check when clicking on link inside label

Hello, I have a link inside a label. The problem is, when user clicks 'back' after having read the terms, the checkbox is unchecked, because when they clicked on the link they also unchecked the box at the same time, since the link is inside a label. <input type="checkbox" id="terms" name="terms" checked="checked" /> <label for="terms">I agree to be bound by the <a href="/terms">Terms</a></label> How can I prevent the checkbox from being checked when link is clicked? Tried doing event.preventDefault() on label click, but that doesn't prevent checkbox from being checked/unchecked. I could just take out the link from inside a label (which means more CSS styling). But now I'm curious whether the above is possible.

Use of 'this keyword' javascript in IE ?

Is there a workaround for Internet Explorer to implement the functionality offered by 'this' javascript keyword to get the dom element that triggered the event? My problem scenario is : I have a variable number of text fields in the html form, like input type="text" id="11" input type="text" id="12" .. I need to handle the "onchange" event for each text field, and the handling is dependent on the 'id' of the field that triggered the event. So far I understand that my options are: 1) attach a dedicated event handler for each text field. so if I have n fields, i have n different functions, something like: input type="text" id="11" onchange="function11();" input type="text" id="12" onchange="function12();" but the text fields are added and removed dynamically, so a better way would be to have one generic function instead. 2) use the 'this' keyword like: input type="text" id="11" onchange="functionGeneric(this);" input type="text" id="12" onchange="functionGeneric(this);" But this option does not work with Internet Explorer. Can anyone suggest a work around for getting it work in IE or some other solution that can be applied here? Thanks.
