• NAT ports - how do they work?

  I have the following network schema: Computer A: three nics: NIC 1 (eth0): dhcp, public internet NIC 2 (eth1): static 192.168.1.1, gateway for Computer B NIC 3 (eth2): static 192.168.2.1, gateway for Computer C Computer B: static 192.168.1.2, using gateway 192.168.1.1 (NIC 2). Computer C: static 192.168.2.2, using gateway 192.168.2.1 (NIC 3). So I applied this to get NAT working: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE Every computer can connect to the internet now. I have been applying rules to the main computer (Computer A), like dropping connections to some ports, e.g ssh: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j DROP But for instance, now I would like only allow connections for ports 20,21,22,53 and 80 in Computer C, and ignore the outside traffic if it's not related to those ports. The allowed connections should be FROM Computer C to outside, but not from outside to Computer C (I mean - Computer C is not hosting any HTTP or SSH, but it is going to use them as a client). I guess this sould be done like this: iptables -A OUTPUT -i eth2 -o eth0 -p tcp --dport 21 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -o eth0 -p tcp --sport 21 -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT The last rule (dropping any other traffic different from those) is at the end of the configuration, so -A should be working correctly. The thing is... it is not working. If I put the last rule like this: iptables -A FORWARD -i eth2 -o eth0 -j DROP It just drops everything and, for instance, port 21 (previously opened as you can see above) is not either working. Can you tell me what could I have done wrong? I have been struggling with this problem for some time and I am unable to solve it. Thanks!

• New router messed up server 2003 setup...

  Hey, We were sent a new 2wire router today configured it as best we can to match the old bt voyager. We've also got X static IP's. We've manage to get our webserver on one of the new IP's public facing. then we use a hardware firewall which is in a DMZ again with a different static IP. This firewall then is our gateway for our internal LAN. with a few servers etc. The problem we're having is only our PDC (primary Domain controller which has exchange 2003 on) can't ping externally even an external IP. We've connected laptops to the 2wire router and obtain a private ip 192.168.1.X and it works fine can ping etc. our other servers with an internal ip behind the firewall can ping out fine. We've connected to the firewalls logging console and the pings from the server are allowed through so its fine there. The server in question is a Windows server 2003 R2 Enterprise SP2 + Exchange 2003 Server doesn't have firewall turned on. it has static private IP .. gateway is pointing to the right one External Static IP is routing fine inwards We've ran out of ideas .. help??

• Installing/enabling PHP Pecl Intl extension on CentOs 5

  Original question: I'm having trouble installing the PHP Pecl Intl extension on my CentOs 5 machine. After installing both icu and libicu with the following commands: $ yum install icu $ yum install libicu I tried to install the Intl extension like so: $ /usr/bin/pecl install intl I selected to search for the default location for the ICU libraries and header files. It ends up crashing like this: checking whether to enable internationalization support... yes, shared checking for icu-config... no checking for location of ICU headers and libraries... not found configure: error: Unable to detect ICU prefix or no failed. Please verify ICU install prefix and make sure icu-config works. ERROR: `/tmp/pear/temp/intl/configure --with-icu-dir=DEFAULT' failed update After successfully installing the development version of icu as suggested by RusAlex (thanks RusAlex) like so: $ yum install libicu-devel I ran into a new problem which I also encountered locally the following command: $ /usr/bin/pecl install intl now produces this error: /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:92: error: duplicate 'static' /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:96: error: duplicate 'static' /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:101: error: duplicate 'static' /private/tmp/pear/temp/intl/collator/collator_class.c:107: error: duplicate 'static' make: *** [collator/collator_class.lo] Error 1 ERROR: `make' failed It appears to have something to do with PHP 5.3 being bundled with Intl already. But how can I enable this extension, if I look in my PHP Info than I cannot find any reference to it...

  I am interested in purchasing a netbook to do field research in another country. My hardware specifications for the nebtook: -Be rugged enough to survive a bit of wear and tear -Fairly fast processing (the ability to upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB) -A battery life of longer than 6 hours -At least a 10 inch screen -A decent camera for Skyping My software needs: -Be able run a Spreadsheet program to do basic data input (like Excel or Open Office) -Use the Open Source Statistical Program R to do basic data analysis (Regression, data analysis etc.) -Word Processing (Word or Open Office) Do you have any suggestions on which models or brands my fit my needs? Some of the models I was considering: Samsung NB-30 Toshiba NB 305 Asus Eee PC 1005HA Lenovo S10-2 Also any recommendations on the best software to load on the aforementioned Netbooks.   On a Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS server install certain services fail to start properly after a reboot. I have a couple of virtual interfaces defined on eth0: /etc/network/interfaces # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 172.16.5.240 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 172.16.5.1 auto eth0:1 iface eth0:1 inet static address 172.16.5.241 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 172.16.5.1 auto eth0:2 iface eth0:2 inet static address 172.16.5.242 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 172.16.5.1 auto eth0:3 iface eth0:3 inet static address 172.16.5.243 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 172.16.5.1 and so on... The services that try to bind to for example 172.16.5.243 fail during boot, complaining that there is no such IP address. My questions: 1) Are the services started parallel by default? Can I disable that so they run sequentially? 2) Is there a way to define dependencies between rc scripts? I'm only familiar with the defining the order of seqentially started scripts using the numbers in /etc/rc[0-6].d/) Any other fix or workaround appreciated.

• Apache22 on FreeBSD - Starts, does not respond to requests

  Hey folks! I'm running Apache 2.2.17 with the peruser MPM on FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 on Amazon's EC2 (so it's XEN). It was installed from ports. My problem is that, although Apache is running, listening for, and accepting connections, it doesn't actually respond to any or show them in the log at all. If I telnet to the port it's listening on and type out an HTTP request: GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: asdfasdf And hit enter a couple of times, it just sits there... Nothing. No response requesting with a browser either. There doesn't appear to be anything helpful in the error log: [Sun Jan 09 16:56:24 2011] [warn] Init: Session Cache is not configured [hint: SSLSessionCache] [Sun Jan 09 16:56:25 2011] [notice] Digest: generating secret for digest authentication ... I also tried uninstalling apache22-peruser-mpm and just installing straight apache22... Still no luck. I tried removing all of the LoadModule lines from httpd.conf and just re-enabled the ones that were necessary to parse the config. Ended up with only the following loaded: root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# /usr/local/sbin/apachectl -M Loaded Modules: core_module (static) mpm_peruser_module (static) http_module (static) so_module (static) authz_host_module (shared) log_config_module (shared) alias_module (shared) Syntax OK root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# Same results. • Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Network Setup

  Hi all, Some background: I'm very much new to networking in general, and virtualization in particular. I'm trying to set up a series of VMs as we are transitioning to a thin client setup. I have been supplied a limited number of static ip addresses. The server is located in an offsite building which houses the network we use to connect to the internet, share folders etc. The setup I've been trying to go for is this: The host OS (Windows Server 2008 R2) is bound to one nic using one of the static ips (say, Nic1 and ip 10.255.6.61). I've set up another external virtual network attached to another physical nic , and a virtual private network attached to no nic. There is one VM running the same os (as the host). This VM is connected to both the external virtual network (and uses another static ip say Nic2 and ip 10.255.6.62) and also to the virtual private network (I gave it a static random ip 192.168.88.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0). This virtual private network is connected to all the other VMs. I'd like to share the internet connection with all the other VMs on the private virtual network, and so I installed the RRAS role on the server connected to Nic2, and selected the option to share the internet over the vpn. I've run through the RRAS wizard a few times, trying different configurations, but none of them seem to be letting the other vms connect to the 'net. The vms seem to connect to the virtual private network fine, they are assigned an ip address and everything, but no internet, and no rest of the network either. The other problem is in general I connect to the vms with RDP. Will that be possible with a setup like this? i.e. will the vms show up as computers on the network? If not, what are my other options? • Routing / binding 128 IPs to one server

  I have a Ubuntu server with 128 ip's (static external ips 86.xx.xx.16), and I want to crawl pages thru different ip's. The gateway is xx.xxx.xxx.1, the main ip is xx.xxx.xxx.16, and the other 128 ip's are xx.xxx.xxx.129/255. I tried this configuration in /etc/network/interfaces but I doesn't work. It work if I remove the gateway for the aliases eth0:0 and eth0:1. I think this is routing problem. auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 auto eth0:0 auto eth0:1 iface eth0 inet static address xx.xxx.xxx.16 netmask 255.255.255.128 gateway xx.xxx.xxx.1 iface eth0:0 inet static address xx.xxx.xxx.129 netmask 255.255.255.128 gateway xx.xxx.xxx.1 iface eth0:1 inet static address xx.xxx.xxx.130 netmask 255.255.255.128 gateway xx.xxx.xxx.1 Also, please tell me how to "reset" every changes that I made in networking and routing. Update: I removed the gateway and now it works. I can reach the website thru all 128 ip's. But when I try to bind a socket connection in php to a specific ip I get no answer. socket_bind($sock, "xx.xxx.xx.xxx"); socket_connect($sock, 'google.com', 80); I tryed to use a sniffer to see the packets, and I see the packet sent from binded ip to google.com but the "connection" can't be established. I don't know anything about "route" command, but I have a feeling that this is the solution.

• Virtual IPv6 Network between VirtualBox VMs

  I'm trying to create a virtual IPv6 network as a test environment. I have 5 VirtualBox VMs (Ubuntu Server) with network adapters using host-only networking. You can imagine them being connected in series and every machine connects 2 subnets. I want to ping the last machine from the first one: On: 2001:db8:aaaa::100 I want to ping 2001:db8:dddd::101 (Note: there is no cccc network in between) Only static configuration and routes are used: /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet6 static address 2001:db8:aaaa::100 netmask 64 /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet6 static address 2001:db8:aaaa::101 netmask 64 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet6 static address 2001:db8:bbbb::100 netmask 64 up ip -6 route add 2001:db8:dddd::/64 via 2001:db8:bbbb::101 dev eth1 down ip -6 route del 2001:db8:dddd::/64 via 2001:db8:bbbb::101 dev eth1 I thought there might be some automatic route discovery going on. Anyway, ping6 2001:db8:dddd::100 will not work from aaaa::100 When I add the route: ip -6 route add 2001:db8:dddd::/64 via 2001:db8:aaaa::101 it will work. But the next interface in the same network dddd::101 is not reachable. How could that be? There is a machine with an interface bbbb::101 and another dddd::100 and I can ping the latter one, but the machine connected to it, dddd::101 not?? I also have also turned on forwarding. Any ideas?

• pfSense routing between two routers with shared network

  I have a network set-up using two pfSense routers arranged like this:- DMZ1 WAN1 WAN2 DMZ2 | | | | | | | | \___ PF1 PF2___/ | | | | \___TRUSTED___/ Each pfSense router has its own separate WAN connection, and a separate DMZ network attached to it. They share a common TRUSTED LAN between them. The machines on the trusted network have PF1 as their default gateway. PF1 has a static route defined to DMZ2 via PF2, and PF2 has a static route to DMZ1 via PF1. There is NAT to the WAN but internal networks (DMZ1/2 and TRUSTED) use different RFC1918 subnets. I inherited this arrangement, and all used to work fine. I made a config change to PF1 (relating to multicast), and machines on DMZ2 suddenly could not talk to TRUSTED. I rolled the change back, but the problem persisted. What I guess you'd hope would happen is that TCP packets would go DMZ2 - PF2 - TRUSTED and on return TRUSTED - PF1 - PF2 - DMZ2. That's the only way I can see it would have worked. However, PF1 drops the returning packets. I've verified this using tcpdump. I've worked around this by adding static routes to DMZ2 via PF2 to the servers on TRUSTED, but some devices on there do not support static routes so this is not ideal. Is there way to make this arrangement work decently, or is the design inherently flawed? Thanks!

  I've been using GNU SED on and off for a couple of years now. It spins me out a bit sometimes, but it does a good job... for single-byte char sets! I now and then notice references to GNU SED being Unicode-aware, but the closest I've seen of this is its "binary" mode.. and binary is not Unicode. Can GSED process a Unicode text file at CodePoint resolution, including and especially \r\n (Windows)... and if it can, does it expect UTF-8, UTF-16, or what? and how does SED detect the encoding?

• Lightweight alternative to R for RHEL?

  I want to use R for some statistical analysis of logfile information, but found that even the "limited" R-core RPM has a lot of dependencies not already installed. I don't want to install so many packages for a peripheral need. Are there lightweight alternatives for simple statistical analysis on RHEL 6? I have an R script that accepts on stdin a large set of values -- one value per line -- and prints out the min, max, mean, median, 95th percentile, and standard deviation. For more context, I'm using grep and awk to find GET requests for a particular path in our webserver log files, get the response times, and calculate the metrics listed above in order to measure the impact on performance of changes to a web application. I don't need any graphing capabilities, just simple computation. Is there something I've overlooked?

  I am trying to get the Highlighter class from Lucene to work properly with tokens coming from Solr's WordDelimiterFilter. It works 90% of the time, but if the matching text contains a ',' such as "1,500" the output is incorrect: Expected: 'test 1,500 this' Observed: 'test 11,500 this' I am not currently sure whether it is Highlighter messing up the recombination or WordDelimiterFilter messing up the tokenization but something is unhappy. • WPF: Once I set a property in code, it ignores XAML binding forever more... how do I prevent that?

  I have a button that has a datatrigger that is used to disable the button if a certain property is not set to true: <Button Name="ExtendButton" Click="ExtendButton_Click" Margin="0,0,0,8"> <Button.Style> <Style> <Style.Triggers> <DataTrigger Binding="{Binding IsConnected}" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Button.IsEnabled" Value="False" /> </DataTrigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> </Button.Style> That's some very simple binding, and it works perfectly. I can set "IsConnected" true and false and true and false and true and false, and I love to see my button just auto-magically become disabled, then enabled, etc. etc. However, in my Button_Click event... I want to: Disable the button (by using ExtendButton.IsEnabled = false;) Run some asynchronous code (that hits a server... takes about 1 second). Re-enable the button (by using ExtendButton.IsEnabled = true;) The problem is, the very instant that I manually set IsEnabled to either true or false... my XAML binding will never fire again. This makes me very sad :( I wish that IsEnabled was tri-state... and that true meant true, false meant false and null meant inherit. But that is not the case, so what do I do?

• Oracle's Primavera P6 Analytics Now Available!

  Oracle's Primavera product team has announced this week that general availability of our first Oracle BI (OBI) based analytical product with pre-built business intelligence dashboards, reports and KPIs built in. P6 Analytics uses OBI's drill-down capabilities, summarizations, hierarchies and other BI features to provide knowledge to your business users to make the best decisions on portfolios, projects, schedules & resources with deep insights. Without needing to launch into the P6 tool, your executives, PMO, project sponsors, etc. can view up to date project performance information as well as historic trends of project performance. Using web-based portal technology, P6 Analytics makes it easy to manage by exception and then drill down to quickly identify root cause analysis of problem projects. At the same time, a brand new version of the P6 Reporting Database R2 was just announded and is also now available. This updated reporting database provides you with 4 star schemas with spread data and includes P6 activity, project and resource codes. You can use the data warehouse and ETL functions of the P6 Reporting Database R2 with your own reporting tools or build dashboards that utilize the hierarchies & drill down to the day-level on scheduled activities using Busines Objects, Cognos, Microsoft, etc. Both of these products can be downloaded from E-Delivery under the Primavera applications section in the P6 EPPM v7.0 media pack. I put some examples below of the resource utilization, earned value, landing page and portfolio analysis dashboards that come out of the box with P6 Analytics to give you these deep insights into your projects & portfolios on day 1 of using the tool.
