• The Changing Face of PASS

  I’m starting my sixth year on the PASS Board.  I served two years as the Program Director, two years as the Vice-President of Marketing and I’m starting my second year as the Executive Vice-President of Finance.  There’s a pretty good chance that if PASS has done something you don’t like or is doing something you don’t like, that I’m involved in one way or another. Andy Leonard asked in a comment on his blog if the Board had ever reversed itself based on community input.  He asserted that it hadn’t.  I disagree.  I’m not going to try and list all the changes we make inside portfolios based on feedback from and meetings with the community.  I’m going to focus on major governance issues since I was elected to the Board. Management Company The first big change was our management company.  Our old management company had a standard approach to running a non-profit.  It worked well when PASS was launched.  Having a ready-made structure and process to run the organization enabled the organization to grow quickly.  As time went on we were limited in some of the things we wanted to do.  The more involved you were with PASS, the more you saw these limitations.  Key volunteers were regularly providing feedback that they wanted certain changes that were difficult for us to accomplish.  The Board at that time wanted changes that were difficult or impossible to accomplish under that structure. This was not a simple change.  Imagine a $2.5 million dollar company letting all its employees go on a Friday and starting with a new staff on Monday.  We also had a very narrow window to accomplish that so that we wouldn’t affect the Summit – our only source of revenue.  We spent the year after the change rebuilding processes and putting on the Summit in Denver.  That’s a concrete example of a huge change that PASS made to better serve its members.  And it was a change that many in the community were telling us we needed to make. Financials We heard regularly from our members that they wanted our financials posted.  Today on our web site you can find audited financials going back to 2004.  We publish our budget at the start of each year.  If you ask a question about the financials on the PASS site I do my best to answer it.  I’m also trying to do a better job answering financial questions posted in other locations.  (And yes, I know I owe a few of you some blog posts.) That’s another concrete example of a change that our members asked for that the Board agreed was a good decision. Minutes When I started on the Board the meeting minutes were very limited.  The minutes from a two day Board meeting might fit on one page.  I think we did the bare minimum we were legally required to do.  Today Board meeting minutes run from 5 to 12 pages and go into incredible detail on what we talk about.  There are certain topics that are NDA but where possible we try to list the topic we discussed but that the actual discussion was under NDA.  We also publish the agenda of Board meetings ahead of time. This is another specific example where input from the community influenced the decision.  It was certainly easier to have limited minutes but I think the extra effort helps our members understand what’s going on. Board Q&A At the 2009 Summit the Board held its first public Q&A with our members.  We’d always been available individually to answer questions.  There’s a benefit to getting us all in one room and asking the really hard questions to watch us squirm.  We learn what questions we don’t have good answers for.  We get to see how many people in the crowd look interested in the various questions and answers. I don’t recall the genesis of how this came about.  I’m fairly certain there was some community pressure though. Board Votes Until last November, the Board only reported the vote totals and not how individual Board members voted.  That was one of the topics at a great lunch I had with Tim Mitchell and Kendal van Dyke at the Summit.  That was also the topic of the first question asked at the Board Q&A by Kendal.  Kendal expressed his opposition to to anonymous votes clearly and passionately and without trying to paint anyone into a corner.  Less than 24 hours later the PASS Board voted to make individual votes public unless the topic was under NDA.  That’s another area where the Board decided to change based on feedback from our members. Summit Location While this isn’t actually a governance issue it is one of the more public decisions we make that has taken some public criticism.  There is a significant portion of our members that want the Summit near them.  There is a significant portion of our members that like the Summit in Seattle.  There is a significant portion of our members that think it should move around the country.  I was one that felt strongly that there were significant, tangible benefits to our attendees to being in Seattle every year.  I’m also one that has been swayed by some very compelling arguments that we need to have at least one outside Seattle and then revisit the decision.  I can’t tell you how the Board will vote but I know the opinion of our members weighs heavily on the decision. Elections And that brings us to the grand-daddy of all governance issues.  My thesis for this blog post is that the PASS Board has implemented policy changes in response to member feedback.  It isn’t to defend or criticize our election process.  It’s just to say that is has been under going continuous change since I’ve been on the Board.  I ran for the Board in the fall of 2005.  I don’t know much about what happened before then.  I was actively volunteering for PASS for four years prior to that as a chapter leader and on the program committee.  I don’t recall any complaints about elections but that doesn’t mean they didn’t occur.  The questions from the Nominating Committee (NomCom) were trivial and the selection process rudimentary (For example, “Tell us about your accomplishments”).  I don’t even remember who I ran against or how many other people ran.  I ran for the VP of Marketing in the fall of 2007.  I don’t recall any significant changes the Board made in the election process for that election.  I think a lot of the changes in 2007 came from us asking the management company to work on the election process.  I was expecting a similar set of puff ball questions from my previous election.  Boy, was I in for a shock.  The NomCom had found a much better set of questions and really made the interview portion difficult.  The questions were much more behavioral in nature.  I’d already written about my vision for PASS and my goals.  They wanted to know how I handled adversity, how I handled criticism, how I handled conflict, how I handled troublesome volunteers, how I motivated people and how I responded to motivation. And many, many other things. They grilled me for over an hour.  I’ve done a fair bit of technical sales in my time.  I feel I speak well under pressure addressing pointed questions.  This interview intentionally put me under pressure.  In addition to wanting to know about my interpersonal skills, my work experience, my volunteer experience and my supervisory experience they wanted to see how I’d do under pressure.  They wanted to see who would respond under pressure and who wouldn’t.  It was a bit of a shock. That was the first big change I remember in the election process.  I know there were other improvements around the process but none of them stick in my mind quite like the unexpected hour-long grilling. The next big change I remember was after the 2009 elections.  Andy Warren was unhappy with the election process and wanted to make some changes.  He worked with Hannes at HQ and they came up with a better set of processes.  I think Andy moved PASS in the right direction.  Nonetheless, after the 2010 election even more people were very publicly clamoring for changes to our election process.  In August of 2010 we had a choice to make.  There were numerous bloggers criticizing the Board and our upcoming election.  The easy change would be to announce that we were changing the process in a way that would satisfy our critics.  I believe that a knee-jerk response to criticism is seldom correct. Instead the Board spent August and September and October and November listening to the community.  I visited two SQLSaturdays and asked questions of everyone I could.  I attended chapter meetings and asked questions of as many people as they’d let me.  At Summit I made it a point to introduce myself to strangers and ask them about the election.  At every breakfast I’d sit down at a table full of strangers and ask about the election.  I’m happy to say that I left most tables arguing about the election.  Most days I managed to get 2 or 3 breakfasts in. I spent less time talking to people that had already written about the election.  They were already expressing their opinion.  I wanted to talk to people that hadn’t spoken up.  I wanted to know what the silent majority thought.  The Board all attended the Q&A session where our members expressed their concerns about a variety of issues including the election. The PASS Board also chose to create the Election Review Committee.  We wanted people from the community that had been involved with PASS to look at our election process with fresh eyes while listening to what the community had to say and give us some advice on how we could improve the process.  I’m a part of this as is Andy Warren.  None of the other members are on the Board.  I’ve sat in numerous calls and interviews with this group and attended an open meeting at the Summit.  We asked anyone that wanted to discuss the election to come speak with us.  The ERC held an open meeting at the Summit and invited anyone to attend.  There are forums on the ERC web site where we’ve invited people to participate.  The ERC has reached to key people involved in recent elections.  The years that I haven’t mentioned also saw minor improvements in the election process.  Off the top of my head I don’t recall what exact changes were made each year.  Specifically since the 2010 election we’ve gone out of our way to seek input from the community about the process.  I’m not sure what more we could have done to invite feedback from the community. I think to say that we haven’t “fixed” the election process isn’t a fair criticism at this time.  We haven’t rushed any changes through the process.  If you don’t see any changes in our election process in July or August then I think it’s fair to criticize us for ignoring the community or ask for an explanation for what we’ve done. In Summary Andy’s main point was that the PASS Board hasn’t changed in response to our members wishes.  I think I’ve shown that time and time again the PASS Board has changed in response to what our members want.  There are only two outstanding issues: Summit location and elections.  The 2013 Summit location hasn’t been decided yet.  Our work on the elections is also in progress.  And at every step in the election review we’ve gone out of our way to listen to the community and incorporate their feedback on the process. I also hope I’m not encouraging everyone that wants some change in the organization to organize a “blog rush” against the Board.  We take public suggestions very seriously but we also take the time to evaluate those suggestions and learn what the rest of our members think and make a measured decision.

  I want to put some compressed data into a remote repository. To put data on this repository I can only use a method that take the name of the resource and its content as a String. (like data.txt + "hello world"). The repository is moking a filesystem but is not, so I can not use File directly. I want to be able to do the following: client send to server a file 'data.txt' server compress 'data.txt' into a compressed file 'data.zip' server send a string representation of data.zip to the repository repository store data.zip client download from repository data.zip and his able to open it with its favorite zip tool The problem arise at step 3 when I try to get a string representation of my compressed file. Here is a sample class, using the zip*stream and that emulate the repository showcasing my problem. The created zip file is working, but after its 'serialization' it's get corrupted.   I have created a widget for my Wordpress platform that displays the most popular posts of the week. However, there is an issue with it. It counts the most popular posts from Monday, not the past 7 days. For instance, this means that on Tuesday, it will only include posts from Tuesday and Monday.   Question: How can I process a form using jQuery and the $.ajax request so that the data is passed to a script which writes it to a database? Problem: I have a simple email signup form that when processed, adds the email along with the current date to a table in a MySQL database. • Cascading S3 Sink Tap not being deleted with SinkMode.REPLACE

  We are running Cascading with a Sink Tap being configured to store in Amazon S3 and were facing some FileAlreadyExistsException (see [1]). This was only from time to time (1 time on around 100) and was not reproducable. Digging into the Cascading codem, we discovered the Hfs.deleteResource() is called (among others) by the BaseFlow.deleteSinksIfNotUpdate(). Btw, we were quite intrigued with the silent NPE (with comment "hack to get around npe thrown when fs reaches root directory"). From there, we extended the Hfs tap with our own Tap to add more action in the deleteResource() method (see [2]) with a retry mechanism calling directly the getFileSystem(conf).delete. The retry mechanism seemed to bring improvement, but we are still sometimes facing failures (see example in [3]): it sounds like HDFS returns isDeleted=true, but asking directly after if the folder exists, we receive exists=true, which should not happen. Logs also shows randomly isDeleted true or false when the flow succeeds, which sounds like the returned value is irrelevant or not to be trusted. Can anybody bring his own S3 experience with such a behavior: "folder should be deleted, but it is not"? We suspect a S3 issue, but could it also be in Cascading or HDFS? We run on Hadoop Cloudera-cdh3u5 and Cascading 2.0.1-wip-dev. • Confusion testing fftw3 - poisson equation 2d test

  I am having trouble explaining/understanding the following phenomenon: To test fftw3 i am using the 2d poisson test case: laplacian(f(x,y)) = - g(x,y) with periodic boundary conditions. After applying the fourier transform to the equation we obtain : F(kx,ky) = G(kx,ky) /(kx² + ky²) (1) if i take g(x,y) = sin (x) + sin(y) , (x,y) \in [0,2 \pi] i have immediately f(x,y) = g(x,y) which is what i am trying to obtain with the fft : i compute G from g with a forward Fourier transform From this i can compute the Fourier transform of f with (1). Finally, i compute f with the backward Fourier transform (without forgetting to normalize by 1/(nx*ny)). In practice, the results are pretty bad? (For instance, the amplitude for N = 256 is twice the amplitude obtained with N = 512) Even worse, if i try g(x,y) = sin(x)*sin(y) , the curve has not even the same form of the solution. • Js/Jquery bind Datatable or Datalist

  Scenario I have a input box for post codes. When you put in a postcode it makes a call to a web service and gets all the suburb names back and binds them to a list, like an input dropdown list. This works when I return a List<string> from the web service for just the names. No problem. The problem arises when I go to save the values to the db. When it gets saved I cannot save the name of the suburb in the suburb column in the db. I have to save the id of that suburb for the foreign key constraint. So then I changed the List<> thing slighty and cheated and returned the following. <ArrayOfString> <string>8213</string> <string>BROOKFIELD</string> <string>8214</string> <string>CHAPEL HILL</string> <string>8215</string> <string>FIG TREE POCKET</string> etc.... The reason for this is so I can have the value of the item in the drop down as the id and hence can save that in the code behind on save. • My PHP login no longer works

  This page worked like a charm for years... enter the correspondng user id and password and you would be redirected to your directory. Now suddenly, all attempts to log in - valid or otherwise - result in the page remaining static... no message, no redirect, nothing. Nothing in the code has changed, it just plain doesn't work anymore. Could this be the result of some kind of change on the server side? Yeah, I know it's not super secure, but it was good enough for our purposes. I'm certainly open to better suggestions. I just need it to work... and keep working. Please be gentle! • Why ????? is displayed instead of non-english characters?

  I first created a simple HTML page that uses UTF-8 as its character encoding. Then I moved the HTML content as a view in codeigniter and it was still ok (I had used non-english characters that were ok as always) I added a simple dynamic functionality (there is a contact us form in it that emails users feedback to site admin). Please note that the characters were ok at localhost (which is a LAMP server running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) Strange is that when I uploaded the app to server, all persian characters are shown as ???? (For example ??? (which means Name) is shown ??? and so so...) I have not even connected to mysql or any other DBMS. It's the only page in the website (it's more an under construction page) and nothing else has been used in it. Maybe I should state that I have also used session library to thank the user after his feedback was sent to admins, nothing else. I have really no idea about the problem. UPDATE Now I can see that the problem is only with cPanel. On Directadmin I can see that everything is normal. Both Chromium and Firefox DO use UTF-8 as page's character encoding. URL is http://WEBSITE.COM/dmf/dynamic/ (dmf is the abbreviation of the project name!). There is nothing non-english in the URL. • OpenGL + cgFX Alpha Blending failure

  I have a shader that needs to additively blend to its output render target. While it had been fully implemented and working, I recently refactored and have done something that is causing the alpha blending to not work anymore. I'm pretty sure that the problem is somewhere in my calls to either OpenGL or cgfx - but I'm currently at a loss for where exactly the problem is, as everything looks like it is set up properly for alpha blending to occur. No OpenGL or cg framework errors are showing up, either. For some context, what I'm doing here is taking a buffer which contains screen position and luminance values for each pixel, copying it to a PBO, and using it as the vertex buffer for drawing GL_POINTS. Everything except for the alpha blending appears to be working as expected. I've confirmed both that the input vertex buffer has the correct values, and that my vertex and fragment shaders are outputting the points to the correct locations and with the correct luminance values. The way that I've arrived at the conclusion that the Alpha blending was broken is by making my vertex shader output every point to the same screen location and then setting the pixel shader to always output a value of float4(0.5) for that pixel. Invariably, the end color (dumped afterwards) ends up being float4(0.5). The confusing part is that as far as I can tell, everything is properly set for alpha blending to occur. The cgfx pass has the two following state assignments (among others - I'll put a full listing at the end): BlendEnable = true; BlendFunc = int2(One, One); This ought to be enough, since I am calling cgSetPassState() - and indeed, when I use glGets to check the values of GL_BLEND_SRC, GL_BLEND_DEST, GL_BLEND, and GL_BLEND_EQUATION they all look appropriate (GL_ONE, GL_ONE, GL_TRUE, and GL_FUNC_ADD). This check was done immediately after the draw call. I've been looking around to see if there's anything other than blending being enabled and the blending function being correctly set that would cause alpha blending not to occur, but without any luck. I considered that I could be doing something wrong with GL, but GL is telling me that blending is enabled. I doubt it's cgFX related (as otherwise the GL state wouldn't even be thinking it was enabled) but it still fails if I explicitly use GL calls to set the blend mode and enable it. • Understanding the passing of data/life of a script in web development/CodeIgniter

  I hope I worded the title accurately enough but I typically use Java and don't have much experience in Web Development/PHP/CodeIgniter. I have a difficult time understanding the life cycle of a script as I found out trying to implement a certain feature to a website I am developing (as a means of learning how to). I'll first describe the feature I tried implementing and then the problem I ran into that made me question my fundamental understanding of how scripts work since I'm used to typical OOP. Ok so here goes... I have a webpage that has 2 basic tasks a user can do, create and delete an entry. What I attempted to implement was a way to time a user how long it takes them to complete a certain task. The way I did this was have a homepage where there would be a list of tasks a user to choose from (in this case 2, create and delete). A user would click a task which would link to the 'true' homepage where the user then would be expected to complete the task. Now there's no error in the code but it doesn't do what I expect of it and the reason I assume why is because that each time a function of the script is called via a new page it is NOT the same instance of the script called previously so any previously created objects are no longer there. This confuses me and leaves me quite unsure of how to implement this gracefully. Some ways I would guess of how to do this is by passing the necessary data through the URL or have data saved in a database and retrieve it later to compare the times. What would be a recommended way to do, not just this, but anything that needs previously created data? Also, am I correct to think that a script is only 'alive' for one webpage at a time? Thanks!

• Why is JSON outputting out of order?

  I'm am trying to get a list of weather information for 8 locations. I'm using a weather API that accepts longitude and latitude and spits back json output with the weather info for that location. I feed the coords in order 0-7 but when json processes the data it comes back in a seemingly random order. I assume it's because some process faster than others and json is outputing what it gets back as it gets it. • Different behavior for REF CURSOR between Oracle 10g and 11g when unique index present?

  Description I have an Oracle stored procedure that has been running for 7 or so years both locally on development instances and on multiple client test and production instances running Oracle 8, then 9, then 10, and recently 11. It has worked consistently until the upgrade to Oracle 11g. Basically, the procedure opens a reference cursor, updates a table then completes. In 10g the cursor will contain the expected results but in 11g the cursor will be empty. No DML or DDL changed after the upgrade to 11g. This behavior is consistent on every 10g or 11g instance I've tried (10.2.0.3, 10.2.0.4, 11.1.0.7, 11.2.0.1 - all running on Windows). The specific code is much more complicated but to explain the issue in somewhat realistic overview: I have some data in a header table and a bunch of child tables that will be output to PDF. The header table has a boolean (NUMBER(1) where 0 is false and 1 is true) column indicating whether that data has been processed yet. The view is limited to only show rows in that have not been processed (the view also joins on some other tables, makes some inline queries and function calls, etc). So at the time when the cursor is opened, the view shows one or more rows, then after the cursor is opened an update statement runs to flip the flag in the header table, a commit is issued, then the procedure completes. On 10g, the cursor opens, it contains the row, then the update statement flips the flag and running the procedure a second time would yield no data. On 11g, the cursor never contains the row, it's as if the cursor does not open until after the update statement runs. I'm concerned that something may have changed in 11g (hopefully a setting that can be configured) that might affect other procedures and other applications. What I'd like to know is whether anyone knows why the behavior is different between the two database versions and whether the issue can be resolved without code changes. Update 1: I managed to track the issue down to a unique constraint. It seems that when the unique constraint is present in 11g the issue is reproducible 100% of the time regardless of whether I'm running the real world code against the actual objects or the following simple example. Update 2: I was able to completely eliminate the view from the equation. I have updated the simple example to show the problem exists even when querying directly against the table. When the data provider on the front end calls the procedure it will issue an implicit COMMIT when disconnecting from the database anyways. So if I remove the COMMIT in the procedure then yes, the anonymous block demo would work but the real world scenario would not because the COMMIT would still happen. Question Why is 11g behaving differently? Is there anything I can do other than re-write the code?
